Amber in September SFX!

Well you know best, you have seen her a year apart, and I bet you took a *good* look.
I only have the Nocturnal and pics to compare her to, so I totally believe you.

In any case it does not matter, that was my point. It does not matter what she looks like or weighs, let that be clear. She is a wonderful woman and that is all that counts. (Of course, I really do not mind she is a vision of beauty. )

I was at Kath's site checking out the article and pics again when I noticed an excerpt from another article (in the same mag) called 'Paul Cornell: Dancing With Joss Whedon'.

NIGHT OF THE JIVING DEAD

SFX soldiers on down to Radisson Edwardian hotel in Heathrow for the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer convention...

* * * * * * * *

"Hi, I'm Joss. Er... I'm a writer."

And so Joss Whedon introduced himself to over 1,000 goggle-eyed /Buffy/ fans at Nocturnal 3K, the biggest, boldest and brightest of all vampire conventions in the UK. Taking place in the desolate environs of Heathrow airport, at a hotel that didn't know what had hit it, Nocturnal boasted a guest line-up that had the attendees all but palpitating in orgasmic joy: Whedon, James Marsters, Amber Benson, J august Richards, Andy Hallett (the Host from /Angel/) and George Hertzberg (Adam from last year's /Buffy/), as well as surprise guest Nicholas Brendon, who paid a blink-and-you'll-'im visit.

Friday night

The festivities began with an opening ceremony that reeled in collective shock at the news that a) Charisma Carpenter couldn't make it, and b) Nicholas Brendon was arriving the next day. Much grief, much happiness. The subsequent disco was memorable due to the high proliferation of guests who couldn't keep off the dance floor: for example James Marsters, who the previous night had played onstage at the Garage with Four Star Mary, pogo-ed like Iggy Pop in Nike Air Max's, with little regard for the health and safety of others when their song Pain jumped over the speakers, whilst Joss Whedon proved himself to be a party animal of the highest order. He danced with all and sundry, and was beautifully sozzled enough to grab some cheerleader pom-poms and perform a little routine with them. As one attendee muttered, "I can see the headlines now: 'Joss Whedon in pissed as a fart shocker.'" Believe it, kids.

The Saturday Talks

Photo sessions with the guests ran so far behind schedule that in an alternate reality somewhere people are STILL queuing. However, amongst the confusion, Amber Benson gave her first talk. She had been followed to the convention by a vast congregation of adoring "Kittens" from her internet fanbase and she gamely flirted with them, giving a lively talk in which she nattered on about (amongst other things) the attention her arse had been receiving and the fact that her grandparents don't know that she plays a "lesbian witch" on /Buffy/. As unlike the diffident and twitchy Tara as any actress could possibly be, Benson admitted that her favourite swear word "ends in 'T' and rhymes with shunt" and giggled like a schoolgirl on helium at all times. In response to the question, "Is Alyson Hannigan a good kisser?", Benson gleefully replied, "It took all day. Very intense. We had an audience. Lots of guys in shorts. And she's a fricking amazing kisser!" She also told the tale of an encounter in a shop a few days beforehand when a stray tampon flew from her bag on to the counter in front of the assistant. Scrabbling to throw it back into her bag, thankful that she hadn't been recognised, Benson was stunned when the oblivious assistant merely asked, "Fb, vf Ohssl ernyyl qrnq?"

Next was a panel consisting of Joss Whedon, J August Richards and Andy Hallett. Richards and Hallett made a sizzling on-stage double act whilst Whedon fielded all sort of queries from the crowd. One fan came to the mike and gushed, "Can I just say that we are not worthy?" Amidst the whoops and cheers of the worshipping crowd, Joss looked thoughtful before replying, "No, you're not." Brilliantly, he might even have been serious.

The rapturous crowd was told that the separation of /Buffy/ and /Angel/ by the networks wouldn't affect either series, while /Angel/ remaining "emotionally true" to its predecessor. Whedon also assured the audience that Amy the witch will be "de-ratted" ("She's going to become an antelope!") and that he effectively hired James Marsters "to be Cordelia" when Charisma Carpenter left the show for /Angel/. He also said that his talks with the BBC about the proposed /Ripper/ series (with Tony Head) were moving "very slowly". He claimed to have been rather shocked when Jane Root, Controller of BBC2, told him that they were thinking of doing 6-10 episodes of the show and that it was going to involve a phenomenal amount of work for them. "Oh my God, when do you /sleep/?" he found himself thinking bitterly, having just worked on 44 episodes in one year...

Nicholas Brendon took the stage next, performing the Snoopy dance for the screaming crowd and confiding that Snoopy used to scare him as a child. He was friendly but seemed rather uncomfortable with the knowledge that some of the crowd were making the mistake of confusing him with his character. "Hi, I'm Xander!" he declared with a goofy grin at one point, before stepping back and saying, "And now I'm Nick." Medical assistance was available for those in the crowd still perplexed by this.

Saturday Night Fever

After a terrifyingly imaginative fancy dress party [gagnée par deux petites filles déguisées en Darla et Dru] - the arguable highlight being when one of the gentlemen from "Hush" roller-skated into the main hall with a scalpel - another evening of festivities commenced, and Joss once again proved his mettle by leaping like an electrified frog to chumbawumba's /tubthumping/, despite an obvious confusion over the correct dance moves. J August Richards did a spot of DJ-ing inbetween dancing with as many female attendees as possible, and later in the night Andy Hallett bounced onstage to regale the crowd with /Lady Marmalade/ (joined moments later by Richards for the Stevie Wonder soul classic /Satisfaction/). Through it all Joss Whedon was surrounded by a blanket of starry-eyed girlies who looked as though all their Christmases had come at once, but Whedon was really rather British, apologising over and over and over again for being "rather sweaty" in their presence. At one point, Steve from /SFX/ accosted the jigging Tim Robbins-alike and asked if he could get an address to send /SFX/ to every month. "We get it in every month!" Whedon declared, adding "and if it doesn't come in, I buy it!" [il a dû bien rigoler en lisant la "spoiler zone" du numéro 78 ! ^^;] So it was good to know that our little organ had a physical presence on the /Buffy/ and /Angel/ sets. Before leaving Steve yelled at Whedon: "And set /Ripper/ in Bath!" to which Joss replied: "I /am/"

Before he finally retired fans flitted about him like moths to congratulate him on his work. Whedon looked embarrassed, grateful and touched by every single word. Bless.

On Sunday a make-up demonstration by three of /Buffy/ and /Angel/'s make-up artists produced some pretty convincing demons, and their patter was surprisingly entertaining even for those suffering hangover victims. Outside the main hall hour upon hour of chaotic queuing for photos and autographs continued. Queuing was definitely the main occupation over the weekend for most of the fans and caused quite a bit of friction. Remarkably, every guest gamely posed for hundreds of photos and signed countless autographs with good cheer that went way above the call of duty. Nicholas Brendon even cancelled his guest talk to appease as many photo and signature-seeking fans as possible, although there were ground level rumblings that he hadn't appeared on stage nearly enough.

More talks followed before all the guests (bar Brendon and Whedon, who had to leave early) filed onstage for the grand finalé, an auction to raise money for charity. The gangly George Hertzberg sent Amber Benson into fits of girly giggles by sticking a microphone up his nasal cavity before a member of the audience donated £20 to "squeeze his butt". Hertzberg accepted the challenge with good grace (obviously) and, though was dismayed at finding out it was a fella that would be doing the arse-gropping.

The obligatory party followed (Jeez, do these people ever /rest/?), during which J August Richards danced with all the women he failed to dance with on the previous two nights, and James Marsters, ever the '70s Bromley contingent apostle, did even more leaping up and down like a blonde topped pogo-stick. The girls watched on with swooning hearts and damp panties.

It was a weekend so odd in its sense of fevered hero-worship that a tablecloth doodled on by Nicholas Brendon raised £340 in the auction. There were too many highlights to list here, though possibly the biggest surprise was the unexpected imp-like gorgeousness of Amber Benson, who rounded off the weekend by jigging spiritedly to /It's Raining Men/. Well, it wouldn't happen on /Buffy/... SFX
