*trumpets sound in fanfare. Owl steps out of her Beta hut and draws herself up importantly*
Dear loyal readers:
Here it is, at long last - part 3b! Enjoy!
Please take note of the following:
1) I will post in the author's update thread in Jomarch's name. Well, actually using my name, but in Jomarch's place.... er... to
indicate that an update is available in this thread. [ must stop confusing myself in this manner]
2) I will post the other new updates as needed. Here is my system..... *unrolls map of the U.K. for all to see* This here map is no ordinary map... No - see, I have enchanted this map to show a tiny Jomarch-shaped blip which changes colors based on Jomarch's moods. It's a mood blip. I want to see this blip glowing bright blue! (that's a happy mood). So - your job is to show as much love as you can here on the thread, which will inevitably find its way to Jomarch, and then we will know that she is happy! The more wacky fun, the better! When the blip turns bright blue and starry, you get your update! Sounds fair to me...
And now, without further ado, I present you with:
Chapter 3b
Spoiler Warning - It has some spoilers up to Normal Again and you may want to read my previous story as it is set in the same universe. If you don't want to, it's ok too. Just realize that Willow is in a wheelchair and this would be set around two and a half years from start of current US season.
Feedback - Good God! Yes, please.
Disclaimer - All characters, names etc belong to ME. I am just borrowing them for this short while in order to make them do what I want for a change instead of waiting to see what happens every Tuesday.
Rating - PG
Title : Left Of Center
Chapter 3b
As soon as Dawn left to answer the front door, Buffy turned to the two lover-wiccans. She had wanted to talk to her two best friends for some time. Something had been preying on her mind, and she needed to discuss it with them first.
"Hey, guys? I really appreciate you teaching Dawn magic and all, but…"
"But..?" Willow echoed.
"Well, I guess I'm big sister worried. I mean she's this ex-Key of energy, and with all the stuff going on for the past few years…I think that... Well , I think Mom would have wanted her to have a normal upbringing, you know? It's hard enough being an ex-key with a Slayer for a sister. I mean, I just want her to fit in the real world," Buffy trailed off.
Tara felt for the Slayer. She knew what it was like to want to grow up normal. To not want to be thought of as different, or as a demon. "Oh, Buffy! We understand, and we just want to help.."
"Help with what?" Anya asked as she entered the kitchen with her husband in tow. She was slightly worried when she saw that Buffy and the witches looked quite serious. "Don't tell me there's another Big Bad. Xander and I are still on our honeymoon. NO Big Bad! I won't have it," she stated vehemently.
"It's ok, Anya. Buffy was just worried about Dawn learning magic, that's all," Tara tried to soothe her. She knew that Anya had been extremely anxious about her wedding and life with Xander. So much so that on the night before the actual ceremony, Anya had frantically called up all the scoobies and made them meet her and Xander at the minister's house. She then proceeded to demand that the minister marry them then and there. Tara was Maid of Honor, Dawn was the Ring Bearer, Giles would give her away, Willow was Best Man and Buffy was there to beat up any demons who might wander in. She had also warned the minister that she was not going to accept any reason for not going through with the ceremony - not even baby delivery. It was a night to remember for all.
Buffy, worried that Dawn may view her concern in a bad light, looked over at her sister and continued, "Dawn, I love you, and I'm glad you want to help out. But you're going to college soon... And don't even get me started on the fact that I'm not happy that you choose UC Sunnydale. Your SAT's are so much better than mine... and mine were pretty good. You should go somewhere better. Normal." She knew she was echoing her mother's words and it felt right. She had to try.
"But Buffy, don't you understand? I can't..." Dawn tried to get her sister to see - to realize. "How can you expect me to go off and leave my family behind??? How can I be normal, knowing what I know? You, Giles, Willow and Tara, and Xander and Anya... You all stayed here! Why can’t I??? It's my choice! I need to do this. I want to fight the good fight. I'm not just staying for me, but for mom as well. I know she asked you to look after me, but don't you think that she would have told me to look out for you as well? You're my sister…."
Giles looked over at Dawn, amazed at her courage. Her fortitude. She was truly Buffy's sister, in flesh and in spirit. "Buffy, I understand your qualms, but Dawn has proven that she is mature beyond her years, and perhaps deserves the right to make her own choice."
Willow was also thinking of the past. Of the conversation she had had with Buffy five years ago. Of wanting to fight the good fight. She had given thanks to the Goddess for making that decision. A decision that had eventually brought her to Tara. Perhaps this was the right decision for Dawn.
"We all want what's best for you Dawnie, but if staying here is what you want, then Tara and I will be there for you. And so will you sister," she finished, knowing that Tara would agree and hoping that Buffy would.
Xander, not wanting to be left out, chimed in, "Well Dawnster, looks like I'll still be the only one without super powers here. I mean, I know I'm the heart of the gang and all, but could you just learn the pencil floaty stuff and not the big spells so I don't feel that inadequate?"
"But honey! You are more than adequate! Just this morning I definitely felt….Oh... Perhaps now is not the time," Anya added as she looked around the room.
Buffy, realizing she was outnumbered, looked around at the expectant faces of her family and decided that perhaps they were right. Perhaps being normal was over-rated. She put her arm around her sister and said "Fine. You win. But I'm still not happy that you've got early admission into UC Sunnydale and I will still not have graduated!"
With that, the scoobies settled down to breakfast. Willow and Tara held hands under the table. Anya and Xander were discussing the merits of lucky charms as opposed to froot loops. Giles was again wiping his glasses - This was a good day.
"Oh, I almost forgot!" Xander exclaimed. "Tara, we found this on the doorstep. It's addressed to you." Tara was indeed curious. She never received packages. (Well, except for the Victoria's Secret gift that Willow had ordered over the internet for her. She hoped she wasn't blushing!). She was sure that this was not like that. It was a small brown package, tied with string. The address and her name were printed neatly on the front.
Willow looked over at her love. She could sense Tara's curiosity and underlying apprehension as well as... Oh God! Tara was thinking about her gift again...
"Baby? You ok?" Willow gently squeezed Tara's hand.
"Yeah," Tara smiled back and began to unwrap the package. She was truly taken aback by what she saw inside. Her face was a mixture of wonder and incomprehension.
"Tara, you wanna share with the class here?" Buffy prodded, not quite worried - but she felt her Slayer senses tingling.
Tara tilted the box over, and the gang saw that nestled within, on tissue paper, was a talisman of some sort. A pendant on a thin gold chain.
Tara looked up in wonder. "I thought this was lost. I tried so hard to find it af--after... So hard.. I…It belonged to my mother. I could never find it after she died. He said it was lost…. I thought it was lost," she repeated.
Willow, knowing how much something like that would mean to Tara, leaned in, kissed her on the cheek, and placed her hand on hers, providing strength and love. "I wonder who sent it?" she queried.
"I... I think there's a note" Tara replied. And indeed there was. Beneath the pendant was a note that simply stated, "Tara, this was your mother's. Perhaps you should have it." It was from her father. But Tara didn't care. A link to her mother had been delivered. Something that she wanted to cherish - to hold to her heart so that her mother could feel the love there. The love for the scoobies, for her mother, and for Willow.
Willow once again moved forward, but this time, she snagged the talisman out of the box and placed it gently around Tara's neck. As she did the clasp, she whispered in her ear, "Your mom knew, sweetie. She knew you loved her so very much, and she knows how much I love you." With that, she once again kissed the blonde, but this time, on the lips.
