Nope, the 52 Batwoman - Kate Kane - is new, and didn't appear in anything prior to 52. Although I just found out she's appeared in a post-52 title, the DCU Infinite Holiday Special released on the 14th. I hope the comic store still has one left...

I'm wondering about the future of Witchblade too. As much as I enjoy the title, I have to admit the 'world' of the comic, the blade and its attendant mythos, has never really gripped me - it's always been about Sara for me. However, in the back of my mind I'm wondering how long it'll be before Sara takes the blade back - I'm not sure I believe Top Cow are really going to shift the title onto another character, and phase out Sara as the main heroine.

On a more up-beat note, I strongly suspect I'll be picking up at least the first arc of The Mighty Avengers when it starts. Not only will it be drawn by Frank Cho, but it's got Ms Marvel (my favourite fallible heroine), Wasp, and Black Widow... and I'm still holding out hope that 'Iron Man', post-Civil War, will actually be Maria Hill ;-) Unlikely, all things considered, but hey, I can dream...

hmm. Do you know if either of Renee's eps are available on DVD?

edit: Well, they're all on Batman: the animated series vol 3 and 4.
Good news: they're reasonably priced and available in America and Europe.
Bad news: they're not available in Australia, only vol 1 is available. I'll see if I can get any info on it tomorrow.

edit edit: Well I suck. Much prep had to happen for big meeting (which took forever) and then by the time i got out Warner was closed... It's now in my planner for tomorrow.

I stopped buying comics years ago but after having a little look at some trade paperback collections I got hooked again. I'm now up to date on the big blue boyscout and working my way through Wonder Woman at the moment, then it's going to be Justice Society of America for Power Girl.

Hey you comic folk, I present you with an opportunity to mock me:

So I just unearthed a multitude of ST:TNG comics that have been sitting in a box in storage for about 15 years now.

As best as I can tell, they are still worth next to nothing. (Kinda fun to look at, but not something I feel the need to store for another decade+) This sound about right to you all?

Depends on the condition they're in. If they've been bagged and boarded all of this time and are in NM+ to M condition, they're worth, at most, $4.00 to $6.00 a piece. That's not much considering they cost $1.50 when they were printed. The Good to Fair condition ones are worth even less...barely $1.00 and sometimes as low as $.50 per comic. By contrast, the first run Witchblade are going for up to $120 each depending on the cover style as they're getting hard to find.

I doubt another 10 yrs is going to help that particular run of comics, though you could pick up a Comic Collectors guide for valuation purposes.

Well folks, 52 is over - and let's have a big round of applause for Batwoman, who made it through alive :party And was bitchin' hard-ass in her and Renee Montoya's showdown with the head of Intergang - I can't think of the last time Bruce Wayne did anything as kick-ass. The finale seems to leave the stage set for a Question (Renee) & Batwoman book, so here's hoping.

Also, this Saturday, May 5th, is Free Comic Book Day. Get on down to your local participating comic store, and they'll give you one of a selection of comics absolutely free :peace For my money (not that any is needed) the pick of the pack this year is Spider-Man: Swing Shift, written by Dan Slott (She-Hulk, Avengers: The Initiative) - it's a solid primer for Spider-Man for all those people who just saw the third movie, and it's rumoured to be introducing new characters and/or plot threads that'll be important for Spidey down the track.

Has anyone been reading Strangers in Paradise? There's only one issue left till the end of the series, and the way it's ending sort of made me frustrated. Has anyone else read it?... It seems to be a happy ending - Francine and Katchoo are finally reconciled and are due to buy a house together and live happily ever after, but... There was never an open kiss between these two chracters (lots of things went on off screen though), mainly because Terry Moore got enough backlash as it is and didn't want to alienate his series (one suggestive cover at the beggining landed the comics right in the "adult" section), but now that SiP is ending... In issue 88 Francing and Katchoo finally kissed, but half of the moment was spent focusing on a reaction of a male passerby, who got scandalized at seeing two women kiss. Not to say that this didn't happen to me in real life at least twice, but as a scene in a comic book, especially one that was supposed to carry a lot of emonional impact, it felt like a cut in all these tv shows when two women kiss and you see some guy looking at them shocked, and most of the focus moves to the "funny" moment the guy is having. And well, in issue 89 they had a really funny and (eventually) sweet moment together, but again - anything intimate was left to the readers' imagination. I don't know if it's just me, but Terry drew enough (straight) characters having sex in this series, and Katchoo was showed several times in bed with David - but when it comes to what the entire book sort of cultimated to - and we get again the "off screen" treatment?... Was I the only one who felt sort of cheated?..

Definitely not. I'm surprised that he is being so coy because I certainly have been reading SiP just for the Katchoo and Francine relationship (and I can't be alone) so who is he going to shock?

We get to see Francine's breasts but not them kissing (well, not without a "comedy" man watching)? That kiss in the hallway should have been the moment in SiP history and he cocked it up (verb chosen deliberately).

Definitely - Jo Chen outdid herself :-) There's also a cover of Faith coming up - really amazing. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the art of the comics itself, or the writing, really... But well, best say nothing when there's nothing nice to say

I'll grant you that this particular cover is the single coolest thing in the whole series so far, but I'm rather enjoying the story as well. I'm not sure how to dance around this without going OT ... the fact that this story is "canon" perhaps lends it more credence with me. I'm not a huge comics fan, but I am a huge Buffy fan and - for lack of a better way to describe it - I want to know "what happens next." And, most of all, I'm desperate to see something happen which I'm probably not supposed to talk about here.

Very much looking forward to that Faith cover!! Jo Chen is great!

i'm with you gorn. i've never been a comic person but am really enjoying the season 8 series so far. the willow cover of issue #3 was AMAZING. soo glad to see her back.

because it's impossible for me to not become obsessed with something new, i ordered the "tales of the slayers" collection which was really cool. you should all check those out if you haven't already. the one penned by amber was, as simon cowell would say,"not great, but okay." i really loved jane espenson's.

i checked out the two issue "wilderness" by amber and that other guy (i can't remember his name) and was thoroughly unimpressed. the dialogue was cringe-worthy and the story wasn't much better.

I'm about to have my first experience in comics. I've just begun ordering The Gunslinger Born. I'm a Dark Tower junkie, and I figure these will be a pretty neat thing to have. I should be getting the first books any day now.

Heya everyone. I just wanted to share a couple of comics I've picked up recently and very much enjoyed.

Comic the first: Empowered, published by Dark Horse. This is a collection of shorts (usually 4-8 or so pages) compiled into a trade paperback; a second volume is in the works, the first has been on sale for a couple of months, but I just picked it up today. The star is Empowered ('Emp' for short), an awkward but big-hearted superheroine who gains her superpowers from an ultra-tight bodysuit, which is prone to getting torn and shutting down at the worst possible moments. She is thus probably the most vulnerable superhero in the world, and enemies and allies alike make fun of her habit of winding up tied up and held hostage by nearly every villain she confronts, but in spite of it all she keeps on trying. Emp lives with her boyfriend Thugboy (a former minion of various supervillains, whose lack of attention to detail he exploited by stealing everything in their lairs and selling it on eBay), Ninjette (a hard-drinking extrovert ninja), and self-proclaimed Demonwolf, a satanic monstrosity Emp captured in an alien containment gizmo (one of her few true victories), which now sits on her coffee table dispensing unuseful advice and demanding DVDs to stave off boredom. Empowered is part superhero satire, part romance comedy, and there's an interesting evolution from its beginning as a tongue-in-cheek damsel-in-distress joke, through Emp and her friends developing true personalities and quirks all their own, the whole story developing a bona fide world as it goes along. It's funny, touching, sexy (if you don't mind the manga-esque art style - it's neither here nor there to me), even dark and tumultuous at times. There's an interview with writer/artist Adam Warren here on ComicBookResources, including preview pages, if you're interested in seeing more.

Comic the second is Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose, a supernatural adventure series from BroadSword Comics that has been coming out regular as clockwork, bi-monthly for seven years, but which I just found out about a few weeks ago. Tarot (born Rowan) is a witch whose dreams contain prophecies couched in the imagery of the tarot, from which she took her adult name. She is chosen by the Goddess to be the Swordmaiden, gifted with unique powers and tasked with maintaining the balance between the mundane human world and the supernatural world of witches, fairies, dragons and all manner of other beings that exist on the edge of the world we know. Tarot (the book) features mystical adventures built around messages of tolerance - her adversaries, who come from both the mortal and supernatural realms, are driven by intolerance and prejudice, but where it would be easy for such stories to come across as preachy, Tarot has a sense of unashamed sincerity that saves it from such a fate. The art is notably explicit, with characters frequently appearing naked (and even by comic book standards they're almost preposterously idealised), and the stories often touch on sexuality (though neither art nor story go so far as to be pornographic), but again, there's a sincerity, and what I can only (oddly) describe as innocence to it - the sense is that the story admires and treasures beauty and sensuality, rather than exploiting it. It seems like it would be tacky, but it isn't. If you've ever wondered "Why is it violence is okay, but nudity is forbidden?", this is a book where the tables are thoroughly turned - nudity and sexuality is presented and regarded as natural and healthy, whereas violence (especially against humans or other human-like beings, rather than 'monsters') is invariably a last resort. It's kind of charming, really. There's a strong Wiccan influence on Tarot, but in keeping with the overall philosophy of the book, it's presented in an inclusive manner, not as the only 'right' way to behave. There's a Newsarama interview here with Jim Balent (writer/artist) and Holly Golightly (collaborator/colourist/letterer) about BroadSword and Tarot, if you're curious to learn more. Issue #44 is out this week, beginning a new arc called 'The Witch Key'; there are four trade paperbacks available so far containing early issues, with a fifth coming soon.

Ok, so my older sister, who is going to be 24 on July 26, has been collecting Archie comics ever since I can remember. A good 10yrs for sure. She has been trying to find the Archie comic where 'Adam' shows up. He is the guy that Betty likes. I wanted to try and find that comic so I can give it to her for her birthday. Any help from anybody would be great. I have no idea where to even start searching for something like this.

I'm not much of a comic book person, but there's a new shop in our 'hood, and since we support local businesses (and Ang is a comic book person) we stopped by yesterday after work.

I got issue # 1 (of 3) of Mr. Stuffins, which is about a boy and his teddy bear.
Spoiler:
Think Teddy Ruxpin crossed with James Bond and a touch of Rambo.
Suffice to say, Mr. Stuffins is not your average bear.

For a casual reader like me, this is a gem. Though I'm not a good judge of artwork, I likes what I likes and I liked it. Fun premise, slightly twisted, and several laugh out loud lines. Good times!

Well, I just read the last issue, and this is just absurd. A ten year long run, a series that has at its center a relationship between two women - and not a single real kiss! And the one time they were shown in bed (in this issue), both of them are fully clothed. Way to go. And I'm not even going to get into the plot (which rang equaly not right to me). I wanted Katchoo and Francine together and happy ever after (duh), but this specific ending was just so emotionally not right, at least imho. It just sort of feels totally disappointing, especially since this was kind of a leading series in the comics industry when it came to fully developed friendship (and more) between women. Oh well.

I took advantage of a sale at a bookshop today to pick up some books that I didn't know much about, and thus might not have bought at full price, unless they'd been recommended or something. As I'm about to do, because one of them was something special.

Artesia: The First Book of Dooms is a medieval fantasy tale taking the epic hero grandeur of Conan, the martial warrior tones of 300, the imaginative fantasy of Xena, and a heavy dose of feudal politics (that I can't quite think of an easy comparison for), and drawing it all together under a dignified, complex heroine who also kicks enormous amounts of arse (and also manages to wear armour that isn't stupidly revealing, as most fantasy warrior women are lumped with). The story is all about loyalty and betrayal, passion and warfare, politics and brutality, faith and magic, triumph and tragedy, and completes a satisfying arc in itself, while starting a larger story that I find myself very eager to continue reading. Two more Books of Dooms, entitled Artesia Afield and Artesia Afire, are available (and I'll be getting them as soon as finances permit), with a fourth, Artesia Beseiged, on the way. The author/artist has promised at least seven books "come hell or high water", and has said that it'd take 22 to tell Artesia's story in its entirety - based on this first one, I'm hoping sales allow him to go all the way.

May be of interest to comic-reading Kittens: Comic Book Resources has begun posting a "comprehensive look at homosexuality in comics". "Parts I and II will introduce the nine participants. Part I features Marc Andreyko, Lillian Diaz-Przbyl, Devin Grayson, Terrance Griep and Mark Millar, and part II introduces Allan Heinberg, Scott Lobdell, Alan Moore and Greg Rucka. In addition to biographical materials, each introductory segment will also include the participant's musings on their own comics work that features GLBT characters and themes."

Should be an interesting read, so far as I could see from skimming quickly over it. However, I'm not sure Mark Millar's on the right track with Ron Stoppable - just because he's quirky and effeminate doesn't make him gay. I've never seen an episode where he hasn't been crushing on Kim (and she's not that butch).

CBR's Homosexuality in Comics (part 2) article is up, including a segment with Greg Rucka, dealing with Renee Montoya, and (glee!) Batwoman, which reads in part:

"In ‘52,' she's revealed little by little, because she's not a primary character in ‘52,' she's a secondary character. So we're not focusing a lot on her. She will be in the spotlight soon enough, and then people hopefully will decide if they like the character."

Emphasis mine; looks like that Batwoman title I've been hoping for since 52 might be in the works after all :party

Thanks for the links to the article. Pretty interesting stuff there.

I thought that they missed a couple of characters and series that I thought were kind of interesting -the kind of recent coupling of Thunder/Grace in Outsiders is one (talk about fandom influencing canon), or the pile 'o lesbian subtext that is Gail Simone's Bird's of Prey.
I could keep going....but I like to keep the comic geek in me subdued.

I finally got around to reading 52 now that it's in TPB, and I find Batwoman a dull character. They write Kate Kane like a female Bruce Wayne, and I've been tired of his angsty shenanigans for a while. I think the only reason that she got so much attention is the whole "ZOMG!! teh lesbian!!!1" hype that was going around before her first appearence. I'm not against the lesbian thing, I even hooray it. I just wish that there was more behind it.
Arg, I sound way too ranty this morning. I'm not that bitter, I swear.

[Comic Book Guy]: And her costume is just stolen from Batman Beyond. Worst new design ever!

I'm no fan of Bruce Wayne, much, either - like Superman, I can enjoy Batman for the length of a movie, but in an ongoing comic or TV show he starts to tire me. It's true that Batwoman didn't get a lot of development in 52, but I thought there were some scenes that showed promise: the Christmas issue, where she's supporting Renee through Vic's illness, or the Infinite Holiday special published while 52 was running, dealing with her sense of faith.

The third and fourth articles provided mixed messages on Batwoman - Devin Grayson indicated that there had been plans at DC for Kate to get her own title right away, but that the media interest had actually spooked them, and for fear of seeming to be exploitative, they shelved the project, which if so seems to me like they shot themselves in the foot but good. On the plus side, Rucka's comment (that I quoted) is hopeful for Kate Kane getting more substantial development before too long. She's scheduled to appear along with other 'Bat family' characters in the upcoming Gotham Underground miniseries.

She turned up in Countdown #39 this week, tagging along with The Question in chasing down Trickster and Pied Piper. It's not a book I've been getting regularly - it feels thrown-together, and not a patch on 52 - but the art (which has been wildly variable on Countdown - Renee showed up in one panel of #40 last week - the issue numbers count down, rather than up - and her 'faceless' mask looked like a hockey mask) was good for once, and, well, it's Batwoman and Renee, so I bought it. Interviews have indicated that neither will have a huge role in Countdown, but that what with it being an 'all of the DC universe' book, they wanted them to show up, just to keep them visible until their appearances in other books, Crime Bible for Renee and Gotham Underground for Bats, kick off.

If I may steal a moment for shameless self-promotion, I've launched a mini-website called Heroine Addict:

Image

It's all about superheroines, obviously. Each week I'll be putting up brief reviews of all the comics I read that week - which won't be all the superheroine titles (because that'd bankrupt me in no time), but I like to think that I get a decentish selection of the good ones. Also each month there'll be a Heroine of the Month, spotlighting a character I feel deserves a look. I'm hoping some people interested in comics - whether they read any titles already or not - will take a couple of minutes each week to have a look, and maybe be prompted to try out a book they'd overlook otherwise, if something sounds tempting. (There's also reviews of any action figures I buy along the way, just because I love action figures.)

We now return you to your regular programming ;-)

For those who missed it, Renee and Batwoman appeared in Countdown issue #38 as well, in a few pages in which they interrogated the Rogues they caught the previous issue - nothing revolutionary, but a fun little scene, and nice to see them getting some use. They weren't in Countdown #37 last week, though (the issues count down, remember). Renee's miniseries 'Crime Bible' starts in October, featuring Renee (as the faceless detective The Question) taking on Intergang's new religion of crime.

And the 'Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar' miniseries is still going strong, with neat Star Wars-esque space opera working from the basis of a well-written relationship between Phyla-Vell (Quasar) and Heather (Moondragon). The cover to the first issue of Annihilation: Conquest (the big blockbuster that all the individual miniseries are leading to) has been released, and Phyla is the main character on it, so it continues to look like she's going to be the primary player in this story.

This could be possible spoilers for the Buffy Season 8, but I'm not sure.

Spoiler:
Um... It's probably just me, or... me thinking too much into this but... does this look a lot like Tara to anyone else but me?

I recently read Blue is the Warmest Colour, which is a very moving tale of two women loving each other and I really enjoyed reading it. BTW, the art is beautiful as well :)

I have been reading the Batwoman series, it was great until DC was being dumb and ruined the last book >.>

...and I still read Buffy and Angel&Faith comics, I can enjoy them now, but I don't agree with all the choices they are making.

I am considering reading Wonder Woman and the Batgirl series, heard some good stuff about it :D.
