HOLA!

Some replies for the latest update. I've been meaning to ask you...do you prefer short or longer updates? Because I could post longer parts but it would take more time...I dunno, just let me know.
I've had so much fun writing what's to come...though I like angst, I love when W & T are on good terms. Not that I am giving you any spoilers...they still have a long way to go. And we have a lot of flashbacks to come if we want to know what really happened.
Well, let's get to those replies. I will be forever grateful with you guys for taking the time to share your thoughts. Without you I wouldn't even bother writing this (and I mean it). I guess I know now what every other writer has said here about the importance of feedback. Thanks again!.

Dianneswillowtree: Congratulations on your DIBS!! Hehe. So you don't like cliffhangers...I'm sorry, but I can't help it. They just come to me and there's nothing I can do about it. But I promise to update regularly so I don't leave you hanging for long, how's that? Thanks

Thianne: Cómo estás? Thanks for your thoughts. And yes, Tara made a mistake, and Dawn made a mistake by not talking to Willow and Willow made a lot of mistakes too...but we'll find out more about that later. I'm glad you're still on this ride. Thank you.

WillowRulez: Well, Dawn was hurting and struggling with her own guilt over this situation. I think it's only a natural reaction to try to put some of the blame on someone else...About what made Willow get better, well we still have to find out what happened to her, don't we? Thanks for hanging in there.

Willow Watcher: LOL. Like I said to Dianneswillowtree...cliffhangers just happen, so there will probably be more of'em in the future. Be warned. I just wanted to tell you that I've read almost all of your stories on Extraflamey and that I was thrilled to find Fire & Ice updated. Maybe we could have some of that quid pro quo stuff?? You update and I update?? How does that sound? :kdevil

sam: Thank you so much for the good thoughts on the wedding, it was a wonderful day, indeed. So far everything's been wonderful, hehe. I'd like to welcome you to this semi-coherent story/trip I'm putting you all guys through and thank you for taking the time to share your ideas with me. Hope to hear from you soon.

Guppy: Yippee back at you!!! Hehe...I love your enthusiasm. No kidding about being nervous when treating people that are close to you. I try to avoid it 'cause I always think I'm gonna mess it up, either worrying to much or not worrying enough. Most of the time everything works out fine, but girl, don't I sweat!! Hehe. I agree with you, Tara needed to hear it from someone else, someone who knew how Willow took it and how she is, but also someone who loves her enough to not go overboard with it. Umm...right now Willow's in the hospital and will be for a while. If we follow the timeline, she still has to finish college and then go away to med school...so she'll be in sunnydale for a little while. Willow will go to check up on her and they'll get to talk...but just a little 'cause with Tara's recent surgery she can't really talk much. But they will, count on that. Thanks again for your kind words.

Cecile: Of course you can call me Karinna, it's my name after all. Now that I think of it I've been calling you Cecile all along and I didn't ask for permission! *blushes* Forgive me? I hope I didn't offend you or anything. I didn't mean to be rude. About Giles, well he has always been some sort of dad to all of them so he will play that role...maybe not in the right way, but what he has to say to Tara will definitely have a big impact on the future development of things re: Tara staying away for so long. I hope we can get past the angst soon and to the sweeter part of the story. Thank you so much for the wedding/honeymoon wishes, and thank you for your continuous support to this story, it really means a lot to me.

I have most of next update ready, I only need to adjust some details but I might be sending it to my beta tonight or tomorrow. So I'll try to post really soon.

Take care, kittens!!

for the updates....well, i think i could be patient if that would mean longer updates. the only thing that i care about is that you continue this story because i like it very much, so it really wouldn't be a problem even if i were to wait weeks. well, i may be over exaggerating here.....

Buenas tardes, gatitos bellos!!

OK, so I promised Ces some sort of update for today. And here it is. Or half of it anyway. The other half was sent to my beta a few days ago and it'll be posted as soon as I hear back from her, okie?

A few replies before getting on with business:

Thianne: Um. So you want longer updates and Ces doesn't mind shorter ones as long as it doesn't take me too much time to post them...guess the only way to make both of you happy would be long and very frequent updates... :thud I'll see what I can do.

Fleiss:
Thank you very much. Hope you like what's coming.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title: Old fire

Author: Kaia (Karinna)

Email: klattes@gmail.com

Feedback: Bring it on! Please?? I'll get down on my knees if I have to...

Rating: PG.

Disclaimer: The dialogs from the intro, the characters of BtVS and the whole BtVS universe belong to Joss Wheddon. The story and rest of the characters are the product of the half brain I have left and, of course, I'm not making any profit of it.

Summary: This story starts at the end of “All the way” making slight changes from the original chapters until Tabula Rasa, and drifts off to AU from there.

Spoilers: Come on...the show's been over for years!

Author’s Notes:
1. Thanks to Stacey, my extremely efficient beta.
2. This one's dedicated to Tarebear. I'm sure I wouldn't have posted hadn't it been for her encouragement.

Part 13a

“525…527…529. Anderson, Tara.”

Willow faced the light gray door, her palms suddenly sweaty. She reached for the knob but decided she should knock first. Tara might have company, ‘Wouldn’t want to interrupt Tara and whoever the responsible for the Anderson following her first name now, would we?’ Willow thought. When she didn’t get an answer, she slowly opened the door and peeked inside. What she saw made her heart flutter.

‘I never thought I’d see such beauty again’ Willow thought as she looked at Tara. She was asleep on her back, facing the door. The faint light of the bedside lamp made her long hair shine like gold. Her right arm rested on top of the covers. Willow walked over to Tara’s IV and immediately checked the contents of the IV drip as she read Tara’s chart.

Satisfied that everything was in order she thought about quietly slipping out, but changed her mind when she saw the small chair in the dark corner of the room.

‘Just a few minutes’ she thought. Her shift had been over for almost an hour and she was still in her scrubs and white coat. ‘It’s not like I have anything to do or anyone to go home to’ she internally chuckled. She could indulge herself for a few more minutes watching the peace of Tara’s sleeping form.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tara woke up curled on her side by the nagging pain in her upper abdomen. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes, adjusting her vision to the dim light of the room. She tried to sit up, but the pain prevented her from moving. She thought of calling the nurse and then she saw it, the flash of red she remembered so well. Red hair attached to a cute little head, attached to a small body, currently curled up in a really awkward position on a chair in the corner of her room.

Willow looked tired. The dark bags under her eyes gave away her exhaustion, and Tara found herself reaching out to touch the little eye wrinkles only to pull her hand back, shaking her head while she smiled.

The cute wrinkle bearer chose that precise moment to wake up and through heavy lids green met blue. Time seemed to freeze, and everything started blurring around her. The amazed look on Tara’s face snapped her back to reality and she suddenly felt self-conscious so she stood up straightening her clothes and trying to fix her tousled hair.

Tara giggled and Willow couldn’t help but smile at her own silliness.

“Good evening, Doctor,” Tara said, the pain suddenly forgotten.

Willow stuck her hands in her coat pockets and bounced on the balls of her feet for a few seconds before responding.

“How are you feeling?” ‘Keep it simple and professional, no details, just catching up with an old friend?’

“J-just a little s-sore, nothing too serious,” Tara replied as she was trying to sit up, immediately regretting her actions.

Willow saw her wince and immediately rang for the nurse. She picked Tara’s chart and started scribbling something down. A woman in her late thirties entered the room and stood by the doctor, waiting for instructions.

“I’m prescribing 30 mg of ketorolac IV now and every 6 hours from now on if needed, and she can start on clear liquids so maybe you can make the arrangements? I’m sure she wants some water” Willow instructed, passing the chart to the nurse, seeing Tara mouth a silent ‘thank you’.

The dark skinned woman nodded her acknowledgment and left the room.

“I should probably go. You need your rest.”

Tara tries to hide her disappointment behind a polite “You should rest too, you l-look tired.”

“Yeah, I’m beat. Things have been a little hectic around here lately.”

“You should try to relax, Willow. It looks a little busy up there too,” Tara replies, pointing to the redhead’s head.

“Why do you say that?”

“I know you, Will. You get that little frown when you’re thinking too hard and…”

“You don’t.” Willow states without even thinking.

“Excuse me?” Tara asks, confused by the redhead’s outburst.

“You don’t.” Willow shook her head. “We don’t. Know each other. Not anymore,” The redhead couldn’t hide the bitter sadness behind her words. Tara looked down, knowing it was true.

“Sorry, you’re r-right. But that can change, can’t it?” Tara asked, hopeful.

Willow looked outside the window, pondering Tara’s words. She closed her eyes for a brief moment and then turned to the woman that once held her heart. She remembered feeling scared, exposed and vulnerable, but she also felt her heart aching for the truth, for an explanation, for closure.

“I don’t know Tara. We need to talk and honestly…I don’t know where that’ll take us,”

Tara smiled, “That’s a start. I can work with that.”

Willow nods, “I’ll see you tomorrow, Tara”

“Goodnight, Willow.”

TBC...

Karinna
I'm all agog (don't you love that word? I love online - you can use words you'd never use in conversation, 'cos people'd look at you funny.... :blush ) wanting to know what happens next. And who to blame for Tara disappearing so thoroughly out of Willow's life... was it Giles, or was it Dawn? Sure, her actions were impetuous, thoughtless, and deeply hurtful to Willow, but her motives were, I think, to cherish (in the real sense) Willow when she so obviously needed it. The Morning After brought Second Thoughts (offspring of Magical Evening and Love Struck or, possibly, Infatuated and the very old fashioned Giving IT All Away), neither of which really had a place here, but Tara needed time to work that out. She had, after all, suffered deep hurt at Willow's hands. Willow's pitiful state had let her forget that, temporarily.

Medical details ringing very true: I wonder why? heh.

Can't wait to find out how Willow (and Tara) survived, and what Tara's been doing in the intervening 9(!!!) years, since we know that Willow's been busy gaining her medical qualifications.

Thanks
Anne

:pinky I love updates of any length on this story. Ok, one word updates would just piss me off but you get it right? Just continuing the story makes me happy. On to this update...

I'm so glad that Willow decided to stay. They really needed just this little bit of conversation to come to terms with what they have done to each other.
“You don’t.” Willow shook her head. “We don’t. Know each other. Not anymore,” The redhead couldn’t hide the bitter sadness behind her words. Tara looked down, knowing it was true.

Love those lines. So true and the way you write them reacting to them is very vivid.
I'm also a huge fan of picturing Willow in a lab coat. :drool There is just something very attractive about them, I'm not sure what. I can't wait for the next part of your story! I hope you don't keep us waiting too long!

I finally had the chance to read this from the beginning. What a great story you've got going here. I love, love, LOVE the angst. (I'm an angst girl, I admit it.) It's well written and has just the right amount of "holes" in the information to keep us returning again and again. Really well done there. I'm really looking forward to reading more and finding out just exactly what happened 9 years earlier. How did Willow recover? Just exactly where did Tara go? And what was the impetus? And I can't wait to see where their relationship goes from here, now that they are 'together' again...how will they bridge the gap that is between them?

Excellent work. Hope to read more soon.

Hey, there!

The weekend's coming. It's time for replies. Again, thank you all for reading. You make this kitten happy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Dianneswillowtree: You got Dibs again! congrats. Sorry about the cliffhanger.

Spells42: Welcome aboard, Anne.

Spells42 wrote: And who to blame for Tara disappearing so thoroughly out of Willow's life... was it Giles, or was it Dawn?

Well, I'll let you draw your own conclusions after next update.

Sure, her actions were impetuous, thoughtless, and deeply hurtful to Willow, but her motives were, I think, to cherish (in the real sense) Willow when she so obviously needed it

Absolutely right, they would never harm each other intentionally. Tara saw Willow's heart aching and she instinctively reached out to make it better...with debatable consequences.

The Morning After brought Second Thoughts

I think it brought second thoughts to Sabina, too...I could have gone that way, but it would have ruined the rest.

Medical details ringing very true: I wonder why? heh.

Well, umm...yeah, that's...um. My professional deformation. Guilty as charged. But I'm not an anesthesiologist or a surgeon (emergency medicine resident here), so I had to check everything up to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes...

Thanks for your feedback. We'll find more about Tara soon. Promise.

WillowRulez: I'm sorry, you'll have to wait a little more for the talk. But it's coming...stay with me?

Fleiss: Thank you, sweetie.

Guppy: Thank you for the enthusiasm again. You will be held responsible for the next update. Hehe...

the lovely Guppy wrote:I'm also a huge fan of picturing Willow in a lab coat. There is just something very attractive about them,

I've heard that before. Unfortunately my wife is a doctor too, so she really doesn't go for it...hehe. Thanks again.

shane: I'm glad you finally read it, hehe. You're not demanding. I try to update regularly. In fact the next two updates are already being betaed...so I'll have them posted as soon as I get them back. :-)

Ces: Don't fret, sweetie. I know you have a lot going on right now. I'm just glad you keep on reading.

Thianne:
Vale wrote:awww.....that was so sad...it made me sad.....

Vale, I'm sorry. But it was the truth, wasn't it. I'm gonna try to make you happy again soon, I promise. Me perdonas?

db: Well, I said I was going for angst here. But you know the rule. Things will get better. Promise. Stay tuned!!

GayNow: Carleen (may I call you that?). You have no idea what it means to me that you left fb for this story. I love, love, love the way you write and it was really great to see you like Old Fire. Thanks, I'm honored. On to your questions...excellent questions. I'm afraid I won't be able to answer them yet but they will be answered, I promise. And it's interesting that you brought them up, 'cause I'm working on some of them right now.

Willow Watcher: My dear, impatient friend. I hope your wife didn't really think you were crazy. Like I said to shane...the updates are already written and waiting to be beta'ed. Don't worry, I'll update ASAP.

Later, gatitos!

:kgeek Sweet update! I read this story before but I forgot the name of it and I just found it. So I can wait for the next update. (I wonder how Willow's going to react. Vice versa to Tara.)
:peace
Okay I think I screwed up I didn't know there was an update to the last update. So that mean's that this post is protaning to the update were Willow and Tara came in contact with eachother at the doctor's office. So I'm going to go back and read the newest update so I can post for that one. :D)

Of course you may! It's my name, after all. And it's so much nicer than "dipshit" (which is also accurate, but still).

Actually, you can call me by my full name or by the shortened version, Car. Cam (tarawhipped) started that because typing those extra 4 letters just really tired her out. Actually, if you want to call me dipshit, that's okay too. But only you.

Awww...thanks, dipshit!

Hehe, jk. I think I'll stick to Car. Just because I think it's cuter. It has nothing to do with Cameron's lazy reasons, no ma'am. (right?)

Later!

Yes, this is an update. But first things first.

sam: Thank you so much, yeah they're getting back on track. I can't be sure it's the right track, but at least they're on some track. Keep reading!

Part 13b

The ride home had been uneventful. Willow dropped her keys in the accent table by the door and set her bag on the hardwood floor. She kicked off her shoes and went straight to the kitchen, switching lights on as she went. She looked at the digital panel on the microwave oven noticing it was almost 10 pm and decided to go for a cup of tea instead of coffee since she was beat and wanted to go to sleep soon.

She filled the electric kettle with water before moving to the bathroom for a quick shower. Fifteen minutes later she was curled up on the sofa in her fluffy white robe taking small sips from the steamy mug in her hands.

She picked the phone and dialed. After a few seconds the voice of her oldest friend greeted her.

“Hello?”

“Xander, I need to talk to you”

“And hello to you too. I’m fine, thanks for asking.”

“Um, sorry. Hi. Everything ok?” Willow asked, backpedaling.

“We’re ok, Will. What’s going on?”

“I need to talk to you and Buffy. Hold on, I’m gonna start the conference call.”

A few seconds later they heard the voice of their mutual friend. “Hello?”

“Buffy, it’s Willow. How are you?”

“Will!! It’s so good to hear from you, it’s been a while”. The petite blonde replied.

“Hey, hey, hey!! How come she gets greetings and I don’t? Nothing personal, Buffy”.

“Xander? Oh, hi! I didn’t know you were here too. So, Scoobie tele-meeting. Something going on?”

“Well, yeah. And I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to say this more than once, hence the multi-call.” Willow responded, her voice a little shaky.

Xander frowned. “Is everything ok, Will? You sound a little…off?”

A few seconds passed and Buffy started to get nervous. “Willow?”

Willow sighed and hung her head. “I. I saw Tara today”.

Silence.

Willow held the cordless close to her ear and waited for a reaction. For a long time all she could hear was Xander’s breathing on the other end of the line. She finished the last of her tea and set the mug on the table.

“How are you, Will?” The concerned voice of the Slayer filled the silence.

“I’m ok, I guess. I just haven’t had time to process it. But after the initial shock I think I handled it well.”

“Where did you see her?” Xander asked.

“Ironically? At work”

“She works there??” A surprised Buffy shouted.

Xander pulled the handset from her ear violently. “Buffy!! Eardrums!! Ouch!!”

“Sorry, Xander. Willow??”

“She doesn’t work there, Buffy” Willow said, annoyance clear in her voice. “She was a patient. I go into the OR and there she is lying on the table with her blue eyes and golden hair all covered up by the cap and, and the lips. Did I mention the lips? ‘Cause they were as full and pink as ever and looked so soft and I thought it was just one of my dreams…but it wasn’t and I started panicking while all the staff started to look at me like I was crazy and…”

“Willow, sweetie. Calm down” Xander said in the calmest voice he could muster. “Breathe”.

“Ok, I’m breathing. See? In and out. In and out.”

“Did you guys talk or something?” Buffy asked.

“Not right then. I just played Dr. Willow on her and put her to sleep. In a very literal kind of way. But I went to her room afterwards and we did some sort of talking. I’m supposed to see her again tomorrow.”

“Woa! Hold it, Will. Are you sure you wanna do this?” A very worried Xander asked.

“I need to know what happened, Xan. Do you guys understand?” Willow asked, suddenly feeling very small.

“We do, Willow. And we’re here for you. Anything, anytime, ok?”. Buffy replied.

“Thanks, Buffy. Xander.”

“No big, Will. We love you.” He smiled into the handset.

“Guys, I was wondering. I have a few days off and I’d like to see you, you know? I think I’m gonna go see you tomorrow night, if that’s ok?” Willow asked, her voice hesitant.

“You’re coming to Sunnydale?” Xander couldn’t hide his surprise.

“Um, yeah. I think I am. Is that ok?”

“Your room will be ready when you get here, Will.” Buffy smiled.

“Thanks, Buff. I’m gonna go now, I’m pooped. This has been a strange day.” Willow stifled a yawn while standing up.

“Take care, Willster. I’ll see you tomorrow at Buffy’s. Later, Buff!” Xander said and hung up.

“Take care, Will. Love you.” Buffy stated before ending the call.

Willow put the handset back in its cradle and walked towards her room. Once inside she sat on huge bed and started tracing the pattern of the comforter with her middle finger. She fixed her eyes on the walk-in closet door and stood to walk to it.

She stepped on the lower shelf to reach into the top one. Blindly, she started looking for the wooden box, taking it out when she found it. She looked at it, blowing the dust off the top lid before wiping the remains with the sleeve of her robe and proceeded to sit indian-style in the middle of the king-size bed. Hesitating for a few minutes, she finally lifted the lid of the box she hadn’t opened in years.

Trembling hands started taking out the small, fragile objects one by one. Willow felt tears threatening to spill, but she closed her eyes for a moment, forcing them back. She would not cry over this. Not again. Not anymore. It was over, had been over for an eternity. Tara being at the hospital was a mere coincidence and there was nothing to expect from it. Sure, they would talk and it would give Willow the chance to apologize for the way she had treated her and Tara would explain why she left without a word. And she would listen carefully and close the chapter of the book that still kept her from rebuilding the part of her life she so insisted on keeping away from everyone that had dared approach her.

She opened her eyes to see the objects before her: a series of pictures that showed them in different stages of their relationship, ‘I loved that zigzag part’ she smiled to herself. The first picture they took of Miss Kitty Fantastico. “The doll’s eye crystal” she whispered, putting it on her nightstand so she could return it to its right owner tomorrow. An Expresso Pump old napkin, with little blurred love messages written in different colors. A silk scarf Tara had once worn. The track list of the CD they were listening to when they first made love…

Suddenly it all became too much and Willow felt too small and weak to take it. Tears started flowing freely without her even noticing. She wiped her face on her sleeve and pushed the lid down on the box. She didn’t want to ruin any of her most precious possessions so she set it on the unused side of her bed.

Still crying, she changed into her pajamas, turned off the lights and got under the covers. She saw the end of the scarf sticking out of the box and softly took it out, bringing it to her nose. She realized it no longer smelled like her love, and the weight of all that she had lost claimed her as she cried herself to sleep.

Oh no! Poor sad Willow.

If she's gunna be sad and with no Tara to give her a hug, can I?

Ohhh. Even though the angst tortures me, I like it.

Sweet torture.

Don't cry sweet Willow, Tara loves you. I just know it.
I am, you know.

You have me so hooked on this story that it's nearly painful to wait for updates. I can't wait to find out what happened to Willow after Tara left and Tara's reasons for her disappearing act. Name changes take time and money to process and Tara must have had a compelling reason to take that step to hide from Willow.
