Siskel and Emmy give this update two thumbs up! :D

Good grief, how bold was Tara to just invite herself on the Joyce quest? I was wholly surprised that faith didn't say something about that and totally ruin the moment, :paranoid but she, was able to suppress the urge and all was good. :D yay!! I was also surprised that Jo so readily agreed to leave the concert without even so much as an explanation especially after finding out about her obsession with Sheryl Crow. Either her butt was really hurting from all that sitting she was doing or she must really trust Tara's judgment and didn't feel the need for lengthy explanations, I tend to lead toward the latter on that one. :D

Im thoroughly enjoying this please continue soon... and pass the pie please! :love (the Luuuuvve pie, that is)hehehe (what flavor would love pie be anyway?) I think rhubarb or lemon meringue.....or maybe a meat pie of some kind.... :hmm

Great update, though it's definitely set to take an angsty turn with Joyce in the hospital. I loved Willow's thoughts, and that neither one corrected jerky nurse Tom when he repeatedly referred to them as girlfriends. I really like how you've written Tara, very take-charge and clearheaded in a crisis. It suits her. Looking forward to more!

so, right when i'm reading this update, kristine sutherland comes on my t.v. telling me to take advil for a headache, and i'm thinking"joyce, that's no headache, get to your doctor now!" Enjoying your story very much. You worried me when tara said she had to leave, i was picturing another separation, and another year or two between run-ins, glad she popped right back in. And yay for small, non-serious injuries that necessitate lots of physical contact. now if you could just make joyce's condition something that could actually be fixed by taking advil, all will be good. mary

Disclaimers are the same…some mild angst too.

Previously:

Willow took her bag and slung it over her head and across her body, securing it firmly in place. She reached out for the hand being offered by the blonde, who was now standing above her once more. As she rose to her feet she felt a sharp pain in her right ankle. She would have fallen again had the blonde not reacted so quickly.

Tara saw the redhead wince in pain. She tightened her grip on the hand in her own and wrapped her free arm around the other girl’s waist.

“I guess I’m not as okay as I thought.” The redhead shrugged sheepishly.

Tara looked around and saw a first aid tent nearby. She tightened her grip on the redhead and draped the other girls’ arm over her shoulder.

“L-let’s get that looked at.” She said, motioning with her head in the direction of the first aid tent.

“I-I think you’re, um, you’re v-vibrating?” She told the redhead.

It took Willow a moment to realize that the blonde was referring to the cell phone in her left pocket.

“Here, l-let me.” Tara offered, seeing the redhead struggling to get her phone.

Willow felt the blonde’s hand go into her pocket. She tried not to blush when she realized that the other girl would have to dig around a bit before she could get a hold on the cell phone. *Hands! Hands in new places!*

The nurse, Tom, gently pulled the redhead’s foot onto his lap and removed her shoe. The motion caused a sharp pain to fly up the girl’s leg and she reached out to grip the bench, but instead found a soft hand take her own and hold on firmly.

Willow was about to try to stand, with the blonde’s support, when she saw Faith rush into the tent. She was about to insist that she was fine and there was no need for Faith to come find her, but the look on the brunette’s face told her something was definitely wrong.

“Joyce…she’s, she’s in the hospital. Giles called, B thought it was you!”

“Oh God Red, B says it’s pretty bad. She’s…B’s…Buffy’s freakin’ out Will. I…We have to go now.”

“Okay, Faith, okay. We’re going now.” Willow said, moving to stand.

“Wait.” Tara interrupted, “I’m going with you.”

“Wait, we can’t let you leave your friend here.”

Tara smiled at the redhead’s concern. “She’s coming with us.”

Looking at Faith, she nodded towards the tent door. “Lead the way.”

Now on with it…and yes, there is definitely pie!!!

Part 10

When the trio arrived at the parking lot, they found a worried Jo standing by a Honda minivan, her arms fully loaded with two backpacks and a large, hastily folded, blanket.

Tara was momentarily distracted by the van’s license plates, BIGRED, and she gave Willow a curious glance.

“My dad’s idea of a clever joke.” The redhead shrugged.

The group determined that Willow was the only one who actually knew how to get back to Sunnydale from the fairgrounds, and so it was decided that Willow would sit in the front passenger seat and give Tara directions as she drove.

Faith and Jo got into the van and dumped their bags into the back seat as Tara settled Willow into the front seat. She took the blanket from Jo and folded it up to serve as a cushion for Willow’s foot. The redhead was surprised when, rather than close the car door, Tara crouched down.

“Y-you need to put this on your ankle.” Tara said as she pulled the cold pack out of her pocket. “M-may I?” She asked, pointing to Willow’s foot. The redhead could only nod and stare as the blonde gently unwrapped her ankle. Tara handed the bandage to Willow before breaking the cold pack and shaking it to mix the chemicals in the plastic. Willow winced when she felt the cold on her ankle but gave a small smile when the blonde looked up at her.

Assured that Willow was set, Tara finally closed the car door and ran around to the driver's side, hopped in and started the van.

The ride back to Sunnydale was fairly quiet. The only conversations made were Willow’s instructions as to which roads to take, Faith asking Willow to call the hospital, and Willow talking to Xander on her phone.

After a two hour drive the group pulled into the hospital parking lot, where this time both Tara and Faith supported Willow into the emergency room, with Jo behind them. There was some minor confusion when the triage nurse, seeing the redhead being carried in, insisted they wait in line with the rest of the patients.

Once they had cleared that up, the nurse explained that Mrs. Summers had gone up to surgery and that would be where the rest of their group could be found. She was also nice enough to find a pair of crutches for Willow to use so that her friends would not have to carry her for the long walk to the hospital elevators.

When the group arrived in the surgery room waiting lounge they found two girls huddled together on a couch, the dark-haired boy from the concert and a tall, older man with glasses standing by the coffeemaker, and the other girl from the airport sitting in a corner chair flipping through a copy of The Economist.

Xander rushed to his best friend when he saw the crutches, and both Buffy and Dawn moved to stand.

“It’s okay. It’s just sprained.” She said, waving to the sisters. She hobbled over and gave both girls a long hug. As Buffy pulled away she gave Faith a small wave then gave Willow a curious look, but before Willow could make the proper introductions a loud voice came from the corner of the lounge.

“Hey, you were at the airport too!” All eyes turned to Xander’s girlfriend, who was now on her feet and moving very quickly to Tara’s side. “I’m Anya, I’m with Xander now.”

Tara took the hand that was offered to her and feared for her arm as the once-blonde redhead shook her hand furiously.

“What? What airport?” Xander asked.

“In Chicago, where I met Willow. She was there too.” Anya pointed to Tara. “She didn’t think Willow’s napkin thing was crazy.”

“Oh.” Xander responded. After a brief second his head cocked to one side as he looked from Tara to Willow and back.

“Oh, what oh?” Buffy jumped in, looking to Faith, who just shrugged. Both girls eyes went wide as the thought registered in their heads simultaneously, and their voices were joined by Xander’s in a resounding, “OH!”

“I still think it was insane.” Again, everyone turned to face Anya, who was still shaking the blonde’s hand.

“Right, okay.” Willow interrupted, placing her hand on top of Tara’s and pulling her safely away from Anya. “Everyone, this is…”

“T-Tara.” The blonde spoke, giving a small wave with her free hand.

“Tara.” Willow repeated. Beautiful. She thought as she turned to face the blonde.

Seeing that the redhead was not going to continue anytime soon, Jo stepped forward.

“Hi, I’m Jo, Tara’s roommate.”

This was enough to bring the redhead out of her mild starefest.

“Right yes, Tara and her roommate Jo. That’s Xander, Anya, Giles, Buffy, and Dawn, and you know Faith.”

After the introductions were made Willow took a seat next to Buffy. “What happened?”

As Buffy and Dawn took turns recounting what they knew, Jo and Tara looked to each other, both girls feeling a little uncomfortable not knowing what to do. They decided to sit and wait until the redhead had finished talking with her friends. Tara could not help but notice that, despite the near-panic she was in at the concert, Faith had retreated to a seat in the furthest corner of the lounge.

Willow felt the worry coming off in waves from her best friend and the girl she thought of as her own younger sister as they told her about the frantic phone call from Giles. He and Mrs. Summers had planned to surprise Buffy, Dawn, and their friends with a late evening barbeque when they returned from the concert. Mrs. Summers went to the supermarket to pick up some last minute items and on her way home from the store she was blindsided by an oncoming car. The hospital staff was about to call Buffy when Joyce’s cell phone rang. It was Giles calling to ask whether or not she wanted him to come over early. The nurse who answered briefed him, as he was listed as one of Joyce’s emergency contacts, and he agreed to call Buffy before rushing over to the hospital himself. When he arrived they were treating Joyce in the emergency room before sending her up for surgery. The last time a doctor had spoken to them, the only information he could give was that she had a broken leg, several broken ribs, and had suffered some internal bleeding that the surgeons were trying to stop.

After Buffy and Dawn finished their story the group sat quietly in the lounge, waiting for any news. It was another several hours of waiting before a woman in doctor’s scrubs came out to speak to Joyce’s family.

“Buffy, Dawn, I’m going to tell you as much as I can, but I need for you to try to be as calm as you can be, okay? Let me tell you everything first, then you can ask me anything you want, all of you, and I’ll be as honest as I can, okay?” It was clear by then that the doctor was addressing the entire group that had taken residence in the waiting room.

Buffy and Dawn both nodded, and Buffy wrapped her arm around her sister to support her, whispering in her ear, “It’s okay Dawnie, it’s okay.”

“Your mom was hit pretty hard. She had a lot of injuries. Her left leg was broken as was her right arm. As the ER doctor probably told you, she also has a few broken ribs. She was brought up here for surgery because she was bleeding inside her body, but we were able to stop that in time. We had to take out her spleen, and right now they’re making sure that nothing else was damaged. After the surgeons finish there are doctor’s that will set both her arm and leg. Your mom’s going to the recovery room in a little while, then you can come in and see her. She’s out of the worst now, but she needs to stay here for a while, so we can be sure she’s okay from the surgery.” After a few minutes of silence, she added, “Buffy, Dawn, I promise you, we’re doing everything we can to make sure that she’s okay.”

“What will we need to do?” Buffy asked quietly, as she ran her hand through her sister’s hair. “When we take her home, what do we do?”

“That won’t be for a while yet…”

“Please, doctor, tell me…” Buffy asked again.

And so for the next half hour the doctor described to Buffy and her friends exactly what kind of care Mrs. Summers would need.

------------------

It was now late evening. Xander left to bring his date home, promising to return as quickly as possible. Dawn was sleeping on a couch, her head resting on Giles shoulder as he too dozed off in the middle of reading a magazine. Faith had disappeared shortly after the doctor left.

“I don’t know Wills, I mean, school starts in a couple of weeks. I’m going to have to take the semester off.” Buffy glanced at her sister before lowering her voice. “Someone has to be home to take care of mom, and make sure Dawn gets to school and stuff.”

Buffy and Willow had been quietly talking about the things the doctor told them.

“It doesn’t matter though, I’m just glad she’s okay. I-I don’t know what I’d do if…God, and Dawn…” Willow drew Buffy in for a hug as her best friend finally burst into tears. It was at this moment that she looked up and noticed that Tara and her roommate had disappeared. Willow was not worried however, as she spotted the girls’ belongings stowed under a couch.

The sound of a door slamming open startled the two friends, who both turned to face the source of the noise. A tall figure appeared in the doorway, and as the man entered the room Willow could feel her best friend tense up.

“Riley.”

-----------------

Faith saw him walk into the hospital, and it was all she could do not to run after him and try to drag him out. Instead, she followed him into the building, her blood boiling when she saw that he was in fact headed to the surgery department waiting room. As she neared the doorway she heard the voices coming from inside and stopped just outside the door to listen.

“Riley.”

“Buffy, I heard about your mom, is she okay?” She heard him ask.

“She’s, she’ll be okay. What are you doing here?” It was a strain, but Faith could hear Buffy speaking softly.

“I heard…Graham was volunteering in the ER, he came and found me as soon as his shift was over. I was worried about you.”

As she leaned into the doorway Faith saw that Riley was now hovering over Willow and Buffy, who were still seated in the waiting room chairs.

“Thank you but I’m okay. You didn’t have to come.” Faith wondered how Buffy could be so calm. How could she not be slapping him for daring to show his face in front of Buffy and her friends, her little sister, after the things he had done?

“I know, I just, I was worried. If there’s anything, anything at all, that I can do…”

Faith could not keep silent anymore.

“Don’t sweat it frat-boy. We’re all good.” She said as she walked into the room and stood at Buffy’s side, opposite from Willow. A quick glance at the two girls showed Faith why Buffy was still sitting , Willow had her left arm around Buffy’s shoulder and her right hand on Buffy’s right forearm. The knuckles on both of the redhead’s hands were white from trying to hold Buffy down. She returned her attention to Riley, who was now glaring at back at her.

“I wasn’t talking to you.” He said through gritted teeth.

“Like I care? You heard B, you don’t have to be here, she’s got her friends, so am-scray.”

Faith could not help but smile as she saw him clench his fists in response.

--------

Jo and Tara walked into the waiting room lounge as quietly as possible. They had heard tense voices coming from inside, and as they entered the room they found a tall, clean-cut man standing above a very pained looking Buffy, a worried Willow, and an angry yet amused Faith.

“What? Go ahead Frat-boy, you wanna go?” Faith had moved around to stand between the man and Buffy and was now taking off her leather jacket.

“Let's go, Frat-boy. Let the rest of them see that you’re not the goody-goody you make out to be. You wanna tell B where you were just now, who you were with? Or should I?” Faith continued, jabbing her finger into his ribs for emphasis.

Tara knew that logically, she should be concerned. The man was over a foot taller than the brunette, but there was something about the way the girl spoke, carried herself…

“Right, and you would know because you were there too, instead of here with your friend. I don’t need some high and mighty slut telling me what to do.”

Faster than Tara could have believed possible, Faith had balled her fist and was ready to strike out at Riley, but before Faith bring her fist forward she felt a hand on her wrist. Faith turned to find Buffy standing beside her, holding her back.

“It’s okay Faith.” She released Faith’s hand, and the brunette hesitated, then nodded before taking a step back so that she was again standing next to Buffy.

“Look, Buffy, I’m not expecting anything here, okay? Like I said, if you need anything…” Once more the farm boy was cutoff before he could finish.

“No, Riley, Faith’s right. I appreciate your concern, but you don’t belong here, so just go.”

Riley’s jaw clenched as he looked at the three girls who were now standing before him. He gave Buffy a quick nod as he began to back away, then turned and walked briskly out of the room.

Tara saw that the confrontation taking place had awoken the sleeping teenager, who was watching with frightened interest. She moved closer to the girl, who looked as though she had been ready to jump in. Gently she placed a hand on the teenager’s shoulder and led her over to where she and Jo had been sitting.

“A-are you hungry?” She asked to distract Dawn from the tension in the room.

Dawn nodded and smiled when she saw the blonde raise a plate from the side table. Her mouth began to water as she stared at the slice of lemon meringue pie.

“Th-this is the o-only thing that l-looked edible.” Tara laughed when she saw the girl’s jaw drop open slightly. “I-if I give this to you, w-will you p-promise to eat something green tomorrow?”

The teenager looked up and down between Tara and the pie. It was as though she was weighing her hunger and the tastiness of the pie against thought of having to eat [/i]something green…[/i] Finally, Dawn smiled and nodded enthusiastically.

“I promise.” She said, holding her hands out eagerly for the plate.

Tara saw through the teenager’s eagerness and gave the girl a lopsided smile, pullng the plate back and shaking her head.

“S-Something vegetable green, g-green-flavored gummy bears d-don’t count.”

The grimace on Dawn’s face showed her disappointment at having been caught thinking about an out to promising to eat something green, but her stomach got the better of her.

“Vegetable green, promise.” She said, again holding her hands out.

Tara gave Dawn the plate and signaled for the teenager to sit beside her, knowing that the three older girls would probably be talking about what had just happened.

Out of the corner of her eye, Willow saw Tara draw Dawn to the corner and hand her a slice of pie…

Ooh, pie…no, focus Willow! Ignoring the protests of her own stomach she returned her attention to the two girls beside her. Buffy returned to her seat, and Faith retreated to the corner she had occupied when they had first arrived. Giles managed to wake up just after Riley left, and was now talking softly with Jo, who offered the older man a slice of pie. After assuring herself that Buffy was alright Willow stood and signaled to Faith to meet her outside.

Faith sighed and stood. She strolled over to where Buffy and Willow sat.

“You good B?” Faith asked, kneeling down in front of the older Summers sister. Buffy nodded in response and gave Faith a weak smile. Faith stood, looking at Willow then at the door. The redhead reached for a crutch and stood. She clutched Faith’s arm with her free hand and pulled her out into the hallway.

----

The waiting room walls were surprisingly thin, and Tara could not help but overhear part of the conversation in the hallway.

“Where’d you go Faith?”

She didn’t hear Faith’s response, but Willow’s reaction was loud and clear.

“What? Are you crazy? Why?”

This time Faith’s voice was clearer.

“Chill Red, I had some business to take care of.”

“Faith, I love you to death but in your own words, what the heck is your malfunction?”

Tara’s heart broke at the redhead’s voice, her pain was evident even through the muffled effect of the wall behind her.

“Faith, after everything we talked about, what you said before we came here…”

“Look, it’s no big alright! I just, there was someone I needed to talk to.”

“Dammit Faith, why would you do this NOW? Who was she? Or was it a he this time?”

Oh no…and this isn’t the first time…

Knowing she heard more than she could take, she returned her attention to the teenager eating quietly beside her.

“D-Dawn? Why don’t we see if your sister wants some pie too?” Tara asked, pointing to the other slices of pie on the table beside her. The teenager nodded and the trio picked up the tray of pie slices and moved to the middle of the room. When she sat in the chair across from Buffy, Tara immediately regretted her decision. From where she was sitting she had a clear view of the hallway.

Faith had her arms wrapped around a furiously shaking Willow, and she was whispering into the redhead’s ear as the girl in her arms sobbed.

----

“Look, it’s no big alright! I just, there was someone I needed to talk to.”

“Dammit Faith, why would you do this NOW? Who was she? Or was it a he this time?”

Willow could not believe that Faith had left the hospital to go to the Bronze. Not when Joyce was in such serious condition, and Buffy and Dawn were seriously hurting.

“Faith, what if, what if something had happened? How could you leave? I mean, Buffy, and Dawn…What if something went wrong while they were closing…Oh God, Little Dawnie…” Willow finally broke down into tears. She had been holding it all in, trying to be strong for the girls she thought of as her own sisters as they fretted over the condition of the woman they all thought of as their mom. At that moment the fact that Joyce could have been killed in the accident hit Willow, and she felt as if she herself had been hit by a truck.

Faith wrapped her arms around the redhead and apologized softly into Willow’s ear. “I’m sorry Red, I’m sorry. I promise you, it’s not what you think, what Riley made it sound like. Everything I told you before is true. Please believe me, I just needed to do something, talk to someone, okay?”

Feeling the redhead’s sobbing die down, she pulled back a little and lifted the redhead’s chin.

“I meant what I said about Buffy. And I want to help her, and Joyce, and Little Dawnie, okay Will? To do that I needed to talk someone.”

“A-at the Bronze?” Willow asked softly, her voice like that of a small child.

“Yes, at the Bronze.” She wiped the tears streaking the redhead’s face. “I’ll tell you when I know for sure, okay Will? I promise.”

Willow nodded. The friends pulled away and after composing themselves they returned to the waiting room. Faith walked over to sit next to Buffy, who was now eating a slice of pie. She thanked Jo as she handed her a plate, but when she turned to hand it to Willow she was surprised to see the redhead still standing in the doorway, her eyes bulging as she stared at Tara.

---

Faith had said Buffy and Will and Dawnie, not B or Red or even squirt. The fact that Faith had not used her nicknames for her friends was enough to assure the redhead that Faith had not gone and done something completely stupid and hurtful. But all her efforts to compose herself before facing Buffy and Dawn after her mild breakdown went to waste. As she entered the lounge her eyes fell on the blue-eyed blonde sitting across from Buffy.

Tara, like the Goddess, was eating a slice of pie. Willow stared as the blonde lifted a fork to her mouth. Her eyes bulged as the fork and pie disappeared into Tara’s mouth. When Tara’s lips closed around the fork, Willow’s jaw dropped and she licked her own lips as the blonde slowly pulled the fork out and returned it to her plate. Willow watched Tara lift another piece of pie to her mouth, but this time her eyes focused on the blonde’s entire face. As the pie disappeared into the blonde’s mouth Willow felt all the oxygen rush out of her head. Tara’s eyes fluttered shut as she closed her mouth over the pie and again slowly pulled the fork out her mouth. A pink tongue darted out to catch a spot of cream on the blonde’s top lip. Willow shivered as she felt the familiar reaction from the park coming back to her. When Tara finally opened her eyes she looked straight at Willow, whose own mouth was hanging slightly open.

Willow cleared her throat and gave the group a small wave before moving to the chairs.

She stood, uncomfortable, not knowing where to sit. There were empty seats beside both Tara and Faith.

“Pie?” The blonde asked as she took another bite. Willow was once again lost in watching the fork disappear into Tara’s mouth that she did not hear Faith snickering behind her.

“Geez Red! Sit, eat!” Faith gave the redhead a small push on her hip, motioning for her to take the empty seat next to Tara. She took the plate of pie offered to her and gave the still snickering Faith a sharp look.

Alrighty folks, first replies, then perhaps an update:

VixenyTarasHot - Glad you like. For the record I was so not happy with Joyce dying on the show, so I have a sneaking suspicion that, as bad as it might seem, she'll pull through.

The Rose24 - Thanks, I think in this and in every other world, Tara's one of a kind.

Spikeizmine87 - hey, hope you're having fun in Tahoe, :bigwave Glad you like, and to add on to what I said before in this and in every other world, Tara will always take care of Willow and vice versa.

WickedReds - F/B together? What gave u that idea? :hmm

wimpy0729 - I think it's safe to say we all love it when Tara takes charge. And for the record, I wouldn't mind Tara/Amber holding on to me any day. :luv

Arwen276 – Glad you liked. The repetition was purely intentional, because well, he was kinda skuzzy. No insulting of mail nurses was intended, just insulting of the nurse, Tom. LOL, unfortunately not all angst is gone, because I read that Chapter 29 and I felt like :sob and was all :gnome for days.

mollyig – We’ll see…:confused

behindhereyes - No, our girls are not getting separated just yet…thanks!

willohand – LOL, you’re too funny, a house huh? Like I said, Joyce will pull through, because you know, aside from the whole burning at the stake thing, she was kinda cool. I thought you’d enjoy Tara to the rescue. Thanks for the :thud . I’ll be updating soon and once that’s done I will sit and patiently wait for Growth.

MissKittys Ball O Yarn – Siskel and Emmy huh? Thanks Emms! Yes, it was bold, but Willow’s ankle wouldn’t be able to apply the pressure necessary to drive and Faith was freaking out and well, Tara’s just cool like that! Faith was freaked, plus you know, hot blonde giving you orders, :drool who can say no to that? As for Jo leaving in the middle of Sheryl Crow, I hope I’ve shown that she has a solid enough head on her shoulders to know that Tara wouldn’t ask her to leave without good reason.

And yes, there will be pie…

tarawhipped – Thanks! More soon!

kisswillow4me – Thanks kiddo…

meretricious:rofl You know every time I see that Advil commercial I have to bite my tongue and keep myself from yelling out “Buffy’s mom!” at the TV…(My dad has a thing about me talking to the tiny people in the magic box.) Glad you liked, but unfortunately Joyce cannot be helped by just taking some Advil, maybe at some point in the future that’ll be all it takes. And yes yay for physical contact!

Alright folks, just so everyone’s clear: Joyce will pull through because I like her too darn much to kill her off!

I’m off to fix up part 10, so it should be up tonight or early tomorrow morning. Though I’m betting on sooner rather than later.

Update

Postby wimpy0729 » Wed Nov 17, 2004 11:56 pm

Well, first off, I'm glad to see Joyce will eventually heal. (I like your version much better.)

I totally loved Faith threatening to kick Riley's ass. I could just picture her getting in his face and saying those things. Loved it!

Of course, now you have me wondering what was the deal with Faith at the Bronze? I can't wait to see what you have in store for us.

Lastly, I must say that your description of Tara eating pie had me practically drooling. It was like I was seeing it in slow motion and having the same response as Willow. Oh my, I didn't know pie could be so sexy! ;)

Great job again. Can't wait for more.

Pie

Postby MissKittys Ball O Yarn » Thu Nov 18, 2004 7:50 am

Mmm..... well I guess you've settled it.. Love pie is fruit flavored. :eyebrow I loved this whole chapter... cause it was all about pie....and ass kicking... faith is such a bad-ass hehehe :laugh . And was it my imagination or does Tara think that Willow and Faith have something goin' on? I sure hope that gets cleared up quickly... :sigh

There was a weird dynamic between faith and Willow though...almost like Willow feels responsible for Faith's actions, and has the need to make sure that Faith is doing what she considers as "the right thing"...or not getting into trouble... or maybe she'd just concerned about Buffy and doesn't want her to get hurt. :confused

anyway.... the part between Tara and Dawn was too cute :p and then of course there was the pie...... :bow

I have to go to work now....but let me assure you that the vision you've painted of Tara eating pie will stick with me for the rest of the day...and I'll probably be thinking about it in a variety of inappropriate situations.

more soon

Postby eklipsej » Sat Nov 20, 2004 12:34 am

Okay, I started part 11 with the intention of it being as long as part 10, but I reached what I feel is a good stopping point...plus which YMKA cornered me in the chat room and demanded I update...

Same disclaimers, except I forget to mention that I updated the rating to PG-13 for language.

So just for you Marina:

Part 11

Soon after they had finished their improvised dinner the doctor returned to let the group know that Mrs. Summers was in recovery and would soon be transferred to her own room. The doctor also arranged for a cot to be set up in the room for Buffy and Dawn. Xander had been called and updated, and he promised to return to the hospital in the morning with coffee and donuts for everyone.

Another hour later, the group said their goodbyes to the Summers sisters and made their way out to the hospital parking lot. Giles waved off and went to his own car at the other end of the lot. The remaining girls piled back into Willow’s car, this time with Faith at the wheel, and Willow and Tara in the back, so that Tara could check the redhead’s ankle.

After a short drive Faith pulled into the driveway of a small apartment complex near the local university to drop the roommates off, with the promise that Jo and Tara would stop by the hospital the following day.

-------------------

As Jo locked the door of her cousin’s apartment behind her, she watched her roommate drop down heavily onto the plush couch and close her eyes.

Tara could feel Jo watching her as she moved around the living room, divesting herself of her shoes and socks. Finally, Jo could take the silence no more.

“Talk to me Tare.”

“There’s nothing to talk about Jo.” The blonde responded still not opening her eyes.

“Nothing? Tara, you never ask for anything, and today you asked me to leave in the middle of Sheryl Crow, SHERYL CROW, without telling me why. Did I argue, no?”

When the blonde said nothing, Jo continued.

“Tara, you left a concert, a very expensive concert, to help a total stranger. The same total stranger you gave your pencil box to.”

Silence.

“You’ve had that thing for years, Tare.”

Still nothing.

“SHERYL CROW TARA!”

Finally, the blonde burst into laughter. She knew she would be making amends to her friend for a very long time for demanding that she leave the concert without explanation.

“Okay, Jo, what? What do you want to know?”

“It’s very simple Tara.” The blonde waited expectantly as Jo paused for dramatic effect. “What are you going to do now?”

“What?” Tara was confused. She had expected an interrogation. She had expected Jo to grill her about what happened before the impromptu trip to the hospital. She had expected Jo to ask if she had gotten Willow’s phone number or e-mail address or something. She had not expected such an open-ended question. “What?”

“She’s here, you’re here, you’re going to see her tomorrow.”

“It’s not that simple.” Tara sighed. “It’s…she’s…Faith.”

“What Tara? What about Faith?” Jo prodded.

“Th-They’re together, and I think F-Faith was cheating on her.”

---------------

“So Red, that’s your mystery girl huh?”

Willow’s blush was all the answer Faith needed and for the rest of the ride back to Willow’s parents house the girls remained quiet. Though they were both deeply concerned about Joyce’s condition, the doctor’s talk with them had reassured both girls. They were both processing the other events of the day.

Faith was still angry that Riley had dared to show at the hospital. She had spotted him in a corner of the Bronze, talking very closely with a pale woman with dark hair. When the woman turned to smile at something Riley said, Faith’s suspicions were confirmed. That fucking frat-boy…

Faith and Willow had come back to Sunnydale a few weeks earlier, to visit their friends and family for the summer. It was the second night of their visit. The plan was for the two girls, plus Buffy, to meet Xander at the Bronze after having dinner at the Summers home. The three girls were driving by the university on their way to the club, and Buffy wanted to stop by and say hi to Riley. He had passed on the group outing to stay at the fraternity house and study for an exam.

He was studying something all right, that prick…

The door to his room had been slightly ajar and through the space the girls saw open books scattered on the floor.

“That’s my guy, hard at work.” Buffy had whispered, putting her finger to her lips to signal her friends to keep quiet. But the playful expression on her face soon turned confused then hurt.

Neither Faith nor Willow could hide the fact that they too had heard the moaning coming from inside the room. Faith’s anger and Willow’s confusion kept both girls from being fast enough to stop Buffy from pushing the door open.

“Oh God…”

He’s still fucking that tramp…

A tap on her shoulder drew Faith’s attention from the couple, and she smiled when she saw the club owner’s son. The friends had been regulars at the Bronze since their high school days, and the owner’s son had gone to school with them and was good friends with Xander.

“J!” Faith gave the boy a brief hug, surprising both herself and the young man with the affectionate gesture.

“Hey Faith, good to see you too.” He led them over to a table in the corner, very close to the table occupied by the offending ex-boyfriend and his little playmate. “So what’s up?”

“I’ll give it to you straight Jesse, I need a favor…”

About twenty minutes later, just as Faith was finishing up, a small commotion nearby drew her attention. One of Riley’s fraternity brothers, dressed in hospital scrubs, had rushed into the club and he and Riley were now standing and talking heatedly. The other guy pointed to Riley then the girl still seated. Faith heard Buffy’s name mentioned several times before Riley grabbed his coat and left the club without so much as a goodbye to his “date.”

Faith said a hurried goodbye to Jesse as he promised to talk to his father. She ran out after Riley, having a pretty good idea of where he was going and hoping she would get there in time to give the guy a piece of her mind, and maybe a little something else too…

Willow did not notice Faith’s grip on the steering wheel tighten. She was similarly absorbed in her own thoughts.

Tara…

She could still feel the weight of Tara’s body on top of her own. Her wrist and hip still tingled from when the blonde had half-carried her. When she closed her eyes, her mind was filled with images.

Tara smiling down at her. What a smile…

Tara’s body moving towards her as she reached for Willow’s bag. What a body…

Tara holding her hand to help her up. God, her skin…

Tara kneeling beside her, unwrapping her ankle, her concern evident in her blue eyes. So gentle…and those eyes…

Tara talking quietly with Dawn. Perceptive, kind…And she got Dawn to promise to eat something green of the vegetable variety. I bet she’d make a great mom.

Tara giving her a small hug and whispering into her ear. “I’ll see you tomorrow Willow.”

Tara…

Part 11:

Hey folks, sorry this is not an update, just long overdue replies to your feedback. i was hoping to update over the weekend but we had some family and friends from out of town visiting, but it was virtually impossible. I still can't believe I braved the thundering hordes shopping the Friday after Thanksgiving. Plus which i've been kinda blocked, i think it's the exhaustion from my thankless job.

The Rose24 - I hope so too and yes they do need to get things started...

YMKA - I know, you didn't corner me really, I just exaggerate, but see now you feel special which is always nice. Glad you liked!

onlyhalfevil – Welcome and thanks!

willlovestara – Thanks, more soon I hope.

wimpy0729 – LOL, yes another fic with relationship confusion. We will sit at the edge of our seats biting our nails. They will continue to drive us nuts. It will all be resolved…eventually. In other words, thanks, I’m glad you liked, and hopefully you won’t have to wait too long.

willohand – I seriously hope you’re not really angry. Things will be cleared up eventually but in the meantime…patience is virtue. Sorry, you might have to suffer just a bit more, but it’ll be fixed eventually, k?

behindhereyes – Yes Riley Bad. I’ll see what I can do about the rest. Glad u liked.

WickedReds – LOL, plot twists are fun!

Tempest Duer – yup, confusion abound, and look you left fb, you’re forgiven!

Spikeizmine – Thanks Rose, glad you liked and had a good trip!

Okay folks, part 12 is started but I’m trying to write more as we speak. Can’t promise when the next update will be, but Marina’s helping me now (thank you thank you thank you), so hopefully sometime soon.

Feedback – I would greatly appreciate feedback. I’ve lurked and lurked and this is my first fic, not counting several false starts and dead ends. If something's working or not working, please let me know!!!!

Summary – AU, no hellmouth. Our girls have a few run-ins with each other…

Notes – Just wanted to say a quick thanks to Marina for helping me get out of my rut and letting me bounce some ideas off her.

Part 12

---------

Willow could still feel the weight of Tara’s body on top of her own.

Tara…

------------

Tara tossed and turned most of the night, or what was left of it after Jo had pleaded, cajoled, argued, devil’s-advocated, and lectured her about Willow and Faith. Now here she stood staring down the long hallway of a hospital, unwilling to take another step forward and unable to take a step back. She had been leaning against the pillar watching the oblivious redhead and brunette goofing off at the other end of the hall. The minute Tara stepped out of the elevator she saw them, and she would have stood frozen in place in front of the elevator doors had she not been jostled out by the gaggle of medical students trying to get out behind her.

Tara couldn’t help but think about the roller coaster of the day before, seeing Willow at the concert, chasing after Willow, laying on top of Willow, holding Willow in her arms, watching Willow eat that pie…But with those images came the image of the redhead in Faith’s arms, sobbing. That’s one image I could do without… Tara had promised herself she would not interfere. No matter what was broken in the relationship between Faith and Willow, no matter how I feel about her, how much I’m attracted to her, I can’t be that person.

She sighed watching the two girls laughing and playing a game Tara hadn’t played since she was fourteen, and that one time was only because she was really, really bored. The brunette pulled her hands away, too fast for the redhead to be able to slap them. She couldn’t help but smile at the redhead’s pout as the shorter girl placed her palms facedown on top of Willow’s once more. Again Willow tried to slap the younger girl’s hands and missed.

“They’re so good together.” A voice behind her caused Tara to jump. Tara turned to the tired but smiling Buffy.

“H-hey Buffy. H-how’s your m-mom?”

“She’s doing okay, she woke up for a bit a little while ago. The doctor said she could come home by next weekend.”

“Th-that’s great.”

Buffy smiled as she turned to face Tara.

“Listen, Tara. I just wanted to thank you, for yesterday.”

“O-oh, it was no b-big deal.” Though Tara felt remarkably comfortable around the redhead, she still felt unsure about Willow’s friends. Judging from their reactions when they were introduced the night before, the redhead had in fact remembered Tara and told her friends about her. Though what exactly Willow had said Tara was still not sure of.

“No big? Are you kidding me? You don’t even know us, you barely know Willow, and you helped her, helped all of us. You got Willow and Faith here, and they’re, they’re my family.”

Tara could only smile and she ducked, letting her long hair fall around her face.

“And I saw what you did for Dawn…when Riley was here.” Buffy added, more quietly this time. She went back to watching Willow and Dawn, who were still playing the hand-slapping game, only this time with their roles reversed. “She, she really liked him. I still haven’t told her the whole reason we broke up…that I, I caught him…” Buffy stopped when she felt a soft touch on her shoulder. She turned and found herself looking into kind blue eyes.

“I-it’s okay Buffy.”

Buffy bit her bottom lip, and after a few moments of silence, she smiled weakly at Tara.

“And you brought pie! I can see why Willow likes you so much.”

“W-what?” But before Tara could say anything else Buffy’s attention had already been diverted.

----------------

Willow was anxious. She needed some kind of distraction or she knew she would go crazy. Buffy’s mom had woken up, briefly, and the doctor reassured them that she would be fine. Now here she was waiting, for Tara.

She and Faith had spent the remainder of the evening winding down after the long day, and both girls were in bed not long after they had arrived at Willow’s parents house. They were in Italy and had gladly agreed to Willow and Faith staying while they were gone, so they wouldn’t have to ask the neighbor to check the mail and water the plants.

Her parents were the last things on Willow’s mind when she went to bed. In fact the only thing, the only person she could think of was Tara. Willow’s fatigue had gotten the better of her, and she had fallen asleep fairly quickly, only to dream of clear blue eyes, long blonde hair, soft skin, and gentle hands.

When Faith finally got out of bed she found Willow sitting in the living room cradling a cup of coffee. The girls were quiet over breakfast, both still lost in their own thoughts. They dressed quickly, eager to return to the hospital.

As they drove to the Summers home to pick up a fresh change of clothing for Buffy and Dawn, Faith finally broke the silence.

“So Red, what are you gonna do about the girl?”

“What?”

“Blondie, what are you gonna do about her?”

Willow sighed and shook her head.

“I don’t know Faith.”

“You like her don’t you?” Faith glanced at her friend.

“I do…”

“But?” Faith prodded.

“But…But I don’t know, I mean, what do I do? Ask her out? ‘Hey Tara, you wanna go out sometime, for coffee, food, kisses, and gay love? Oh and by the way I’m going back to New York in a few weeks?’ Uh-unh Faith, no way.”

“So?”

“Faith...I can’t, I’m not like that.”

“Like what Red? Like me?” Faith’s eyes narrowed as she focused on the road.

“No! God no! I just, I can’t, I don’t want to push. I like her, but do you really think we’d get close enough for her to want to do the long distance thing in just a couple of weeks?”

Faith let out a long breath.

“She digs you Red. There’s no way in hell she’d have done that yesterday if she didn’t.”

“I guess…I just, I don’t know.” Willow trailed off.

“What’s to know?” Faith asked. Willow sighed and shook her head again.

“California’s a long way from New York.”

The girls spent the rest of ride in quiet companionship, and when they arrived at the little house on Revello they made quick work of gathering the items needed by the Summers girls.

Willow stared out the window as they passed the shops on Sunnydale’s main street. A display in a store window caught her eye and she let out a yelp, causing Faith to veer briefly into the left lane.

“Geezus Red, what the hell was that? Are you trying to get us killed?”

“Sorry.” The redhead said sheepishly. “We have to go back.”

“What?”

“Turn around Faith, there’s something I want to get.”

------------

The pain on her fingers brought Willow out of the flashback. Her thoughts had made her reflexes slow, and Dawn had managed to slap her hands before she could pull them away. Geez that hurt, why did I agree to play this silly game anyway? Oh yeah, a distraction. Willow glanced briefly at the wrapped package poking out of her bag and when she looked up she saw Buffy and Tara standing at the end of the hallway talking.

“Willow! Come on you’re not even trying.” Dawn’s eager voice forced Willow to return her attention to the decidedly sadomasochistic game, which I am definitely going to stop calling it that because hello, playing with a teenager here.

After a couple more attempts at escaping Dawn’s remarkably fast hands, Willow noticed Faith standing at the doorway behind the teenager. She caught Willow’s eye and winked, holding a finger to her lips. At Willow’s slight nod, Faith crept up behind Dawn, wiggling her fingers out. Faith nodded three and instead of pulling her hands away Willow gripped Dawns wrists just as Faith pounced on the younger brunette. Dawn squealed, trying to wiggle away from Faith’s tickle torture attack, but Willow held fast.

“Alright what’s going on here? You girls causing trouble?” The three laughing friends froze at the sound of a stern voice next to them. As one three heads turned to face find Buffy, who was standing next to them with her hands on her hips in what Dawn had dubbed Buffy’s school teacher pose. The smile on her face and the glint in her eye however was enough to show the girls that Buffy was kidding. And before Dawn could get away she found herself victim now to three pairs of hands tickling her.

“Mercy! Mercy! MERCY!” The youngest girl finally pleaded through her giggles. The older girls stepped back, fully relaxing for the first time since learning Joyce was hospitalized.

“I hate to break this party up, but as Fun as it is to give you a hard time squirt, your mom’s awake again. She’s asking for you, and you B.”

Buffy took Dawn’s hand and the sisters entered the hospital room, shutting the door slightly behind them. Faith saw Tara standing nearby and gave Willow a wink and a slight nod in the blonde’s direction.

“I’m goin’ for a smoke Red. Think you can find something to amuse yourself while I’m gone?”

Willow glared at Faith, who simply smirked. She rolled her eyes and shook her head. “You’re impossible you know that?”

Faith shrugged and winked again before making her way to the elevator.

-------

Tara still wasn’t sure what to do, so she followed Buffy partway down the hall, stopping a short distance away to watch Willow, Buffy, and Faith torture Dawn. Tara couldn’t help but smile and relax a little at the sight. Had this been her first time to see the four girls interacting, it wasn’t hard to see how close they all were to each other.

But when Buffy and Dawn disappeared into the hospital room, Tara’s nervousness began to return. She was alone, in the hall, with Willow, and Faith. And the redhead looked slightly cross at the girl standing next to her.

Tara couldn’t blame the redhead, not after what she had heard the night before. And as a grinning Faith walked by her, Tara had to fight to keep from glaring at the brunette. She turned to Willow, who gave her a wave as she moved to sit back on the bench behind her.

Tara smiled in return and moved closer to Willow.

“Hi.” She said as she took a seat on the bench.

“Hey.” Brilliant Willow. You have the IQ of a genius, the SATs were no match for your vocabulary, you’re a notorious babbler, and all you can come up with is ‘hey’?

Both girls stared at their hands for a few minutes before Tara spoke up again. “B-Buffy says her mom is doing b-better?”

“Yeah, she’s woken up a couple of times. Buffy and Dawn just went in to talk to her.”

“Th-That’s good.”

“Yeah.”

Willow and Tara fell silent again, each girl nervous and oblivious to her companion’s nervousness. Willow picked at the hem of her shirt, occasionally eyeing the package in her bag. Tara bit her lower lip and played with the cuffs of her hoodie.

“Listen Will…”

“Tara I…”

Both girls spoke at once. When Tara gave Willow that crooked little grin, Willow couldn’t resist relaxing just a bit. She returned the smile and glanced down at her shirt.

“Sorry. What were you going to say?” she asked.

“No, no, it’s okay, g-go ahead.” Tara offered.

“Okay.” Willow smiled at the blonde and took a deep breath.
