Re: The Truth of Deception

Willow and Tara live happy together in a place untouched by Mutant Enemy. This is a forum for Willow and Tara Fan Fiction (i.e. fan fiction, top 10s, etc...) Please read the content advisories on individual stories, read at your own discretion.

Part 15

Postby blameburner » Thu Oct 17, 2002 3:07 pm

Okay. Please note that this update takes place about two weeks after the last one (when they had the picnic). And, of course, the picnic took place about a week after Willow and Tara admitted they loved each other. So we're about three weeks post-declaration of love. Part of me really wanted to explore this time period a lot more, but... in an effort to finish this story sometime, oh, say before Christmas - of next year - I'm skipping forward a bit.

Oh, and BIG HONKIN' ANGST WARNING. We're heading into Angstville in a big way, and it's going to take a while to get it all resolved. I hope, though, to try and offset some of the emotional angst with a little bit of humor, tenderness, and plot-oriented angst. Trust me, it'll all be worth it in the end. I don't think the emotional angst will come as a big surprise to anyone, as a lot of roads have been converging on this point. These next few parts... well, they're gonna hurt.

Okay, that's my disclaimer. Though you probably know where some things are headed, I hope to have a number of surprises left for you. And of course, romance. And smut... eventually. :)

Title: The Truth of Deception - Part 15: Gathering Clouds

Author: blameburner

Feedback: Sure… Always a plus

Summary: AU, baby! So you all know by now... Tara is part of the Initiative. Plenty of questions remain, however, and the answers will be revealed... eventually.

Spoiler Warning: S4. Everything up to "Hush" is canon. After that, this story veers off. There will be some similarities to S4, but definite differences. Basically, if it happened after "Hush" on the show, assume it didn't happen unless I mention it specifically.

Disclaimer: Not my characters, but oh how I wish they were! Joss, blah, blah, ME, blah, blah.

Rating: Generally R, but some NC-17 (maybe). Just be prepared.

Pairings: W/T, of course.

Angst: Cliffhanger warning! You'll be seeing this warning a lot from now on. Sorry, can't be helped. Angst level of 7.

"I want to make love with you," Willow said softly.

Tara searched Willow's eyes, and knew that it was true. It was the moment she had longed for - and also the moment she had dreaded. Part of her wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of her life making love to Willow, and yet... and yet Tara couldn't, in good conscience. She couldn't make love to Willow while there were still so many lies between them. She couldn't - wouldn't - do that.

Tara so desperately wanted to tell Willow the truth, it was breaking her heart. She knew Willow would be hurt, knew that Willow might never even want to see her again. Yet Tara was willing to take that risk. She had decided what seemed like a lifetime ago that she would wait for Willow forever, but she would never give up on their love.

The problem wasn't how Willow would react. No, that wasn't what kept Tara from telling Willow the truth. The problem was Maggie Walsh. Since the last time she had spoken to Walsh, Tara hadn't been able to find out anything about Walsh's plans or why she was so interested in Willow. Tara knew the reasons Walsh had given, but her instincts told her that Walsh was up to something else, something she wasn't letting Tara in on. And that scared Tara more than the thought of what Willow's reaction to the truth would be.

*************************

"And what about the Falasian Crystal?" Walsh asked, finally looking at Engleman for the first time.

"Safe," Engleman said. "It's safely hidden away. And the witch?"

"I have the situation under control," Walsh said absently.

"What does that mean?" Engleman asked. Lately he had begun to have a very bad feeling about this whole project - especially where Walsh was concerned.

"It means," Walsh said coldly, "that I have the situation under control."

Engleman swallowed. Hard.

Walsh curved her thin lips up into a smile. "Don't worry, Doctor. Just get those programs finished and I'll take care of the rest."

Engleman nodded and scurried out of the room, anxious to get away from Walsh. Walsh turned back to the part man, part demon, part computer lying on the table. She reached out and stroked Adam's cheek.

"It's almost time," Walsh said reverently.

Part 15

Willow scurried around the dorm room, lighting the last few candles and double-checking everything. Again. Tara would be back from her night class soon, and everything needed to be perfect.

Willow was nervous and amazingly calm, all at the same time. She had waited so long for this - they had waited so long - and she wanted to make sure it would be special. Of course, Willow knew that their first time would be special no matter what the room looked like. They could be knee-deep in mud and surrounded by frogs, and making love with Tara would still be special, simply because it would be them, together, at last.

Not that that meant Willow wanted to do the whole mud-and-frog thing, cuz... ew. She shivered at the thought.

She had gotten the RA to let her in an hour ago with a lame excuse about not being able to find her Psych paper which she had spent nearly three weeks writing, not including research time, and that was due in 15 hours and 36 minutes, and that was worth 50% of her final grade, and that Willow had last seen in Tara's room and she had to find because her hard drive had crashed with her backup disk stuck in the floppy drive, and...

The RA had left sometime just after "not including research time," though Willow hadn't noticed - she was too absorbed in telling what was, in her opinion, a wildly unbelievable story. I mean really, who doesn't keep at least two backup disks, just so that if one gets eaten you'll still have another? She had actually been a little disappointed to discover the RA had left, since she had been practicing her crying-on-cue all week, and had a fresh batch of crocodile tears all ready to let loose on the unsuspecting RA.

Willow surveyed the scene before her, and couldn't help but smile. The room was lit by the soft glow of two dozen candles of varying shapes and sizes, scattered strategically all across the room. Willow had calculated the precise placement for maximum romantic glow, and had even done several test runs during the week when Tara had been showering and thought the redhead was still sleeping.

Willow had debated about the fairy lights, but was now glad she had decided to leave them on. They seemed to be twinkling extra-special tonight, as if they were aware of the importance this night held. Willow couldn't help but feel that the Goddess was smiling down on them.

She smoothed the bedspread one last time, grinning at the surprise hidden underneath. Brand new red satin sheets, which Willow had bought on a secret shopping trip last weekend, graced the bed. Willow had washed them by hand before putting them on the bed, just so they wouldn't be quite so slippery. Slippery is all of the good, unless we end up sliding of the bed while in the throes of passion... ooo, we're gonna be in the throes of passion. Yay us.

A single long-stem rose sat in a crystal vase on the edge of Tara's desk... a jazz CD was softly playing in the CD player... vanilla incense was wafting its soft scent throughout the room... the lights were low... the bed was made... it was... perfect.

Willow walked over to the full-length mirror and checked her appearance. She thanked the Goddess for the good hair day she had been blessed with. She had on just a touch of makeup, topped off by a hint of lip gloss. She wore no jewelry except for the ring Tara had given her two weeks earlier after their picnic.

They had actually had a wonderful time that day, even after Buffy had shown up. The three girls had sat there nibbling on food and chatting most of the afternoon away. Willow was glad Buffy was getting to know Tara better, and that her best friend had apparently taken a liking to her girlfriend, and vice-versa.

Of course, that made Willow feel even more guilty than she already did. She knew she should just come out and tell Buffy about Tara, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. She was too scared of how Buffy would react - even though Willow suspected that Buffy suspected... even though Willow knew Buffy loved her and deep down knew that Buffy would not abandon her for being gay. Willow knew it with her heart, but she just couldn't seem to convince her head.

But that was, in part, what this night was about, too. Over the last two weeks, Willow had become more and more certain of her love for Tara. Not that she had ever really doubted the depth of her feelings, but still... Tara had been right about waiting to make love. Willow knew that now.

It was a big step, the last big step, really. For once they made love... once they did that, then Willow knew she'd be able to face anything. Even her friends. Loving Tara gave Willow the courage to face herself. Being loved by Tara gave Willow the courage to face her fears. Making love with Tara would make her courage complete, and would enable Willow to face the world.

Willow ran her hands across the silk negligee she wore - yet another purchase from the secret shopping trip. She felt bad about having lied to Tara about where she was going when she went shopping, but she thought that Tara would think the results were well worth the deception. The emerald green number looked perfect on her, she had to admit, highlighting her eyes and contrasting against her fiery red hair. Willow could just imagine - and had been imagining for days - what Tara's reaction would be. Willow hoped that reaction would involve swooping and thudding and the inability to form sentences, followed by kissing. Lots and lots of kissing. And touching. Lots of that, too.

The last two weeks had been thud-worthy in their own right. Just because they weren't making love certainly hadn't meant they weren't indulging in naughtiness. Much, much naughtiness of the very good variety. It had been harder and harder for Willow to pull back when they reached the line, as they inevitably did... the line Tara would always seem to point out.

Willow didn't know how Tara did it. It was obvious to Willow that Tara was as worked up sexually as she was, and yet... Tara always put a stop to it. Said they still weren't ready, that Willow still wasn't ready. Willow often thought she detected... something... when Tara would stop them. A hint of sadness, maybe? Willow wasn't sure, and kept chalking it up to Tara being disappointed that they were stopping short. Still... Willow thought there was more to it than that, though she didn't know what.

But after tonight, it won't matter, Willow thought happily. I'm ready, Tara. I'm really, really ready, and we'll be together. Finally.

Willow was startled out of her thoughts by the sound of metal scraping against metal. Metal. Key. Tara's key. Tara's key in Tara's door!

Willow felt a sudden surge of panic, and started twisting and turning even as she waged a babble-war inside her head. How should I be standing? Should I even be standing? Maybe I should be sitting? Yes, sitting... but where? In the chair? Which chair? Or on the bed? Oh, but then I'll wrinkle the bedspread and my negligee will ride up my thighs and I don't want Tara thinking I'm a total slut-bomb!

But then the door opened, and then... there was Tara, staring. Staring at the candles, at the rose, and... finally... at Willow.

Tara's bookbag dropped to the floor with a thud, and Tara reached blindly behind her, grasping for the door so she could shut it. She couldn't take her eyes off Willow - who, caught in mid-mental-babble, was standing on one foot next to the bed while the other foot was up in the air, that leg being bent up at the knee behind her. Willow wrung her hands together in front of her and bit her bottom lip as she tried to gage Tara's reaction.

"Wha... ha... wha.. hu...?" was all Tara could get out. She cleared her throat and tried again. "Wil?"

"Surprise," Willow said shyly. She lowered her eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, and then looked back up at Tara.

"Wil..." Tara breathed. At this moment Tara loved Willow more than she could have ever imagined possible. Willow had gone through so much trouble, so much preparation... and she was so completely beautiful. She stole Tara's heart all over again.

Willow took three steps, stopping directly in front of her love, and took Tara's hands in her own. She leaned forward and gently placed her lips over Tara's in a breathtakingly sweet kiss.

"I know you wanted to wait, baby," Willow said after pulling back from the kiss. "And we have waited. You've waited. I've waited. And I think... no, I know... I'm tired of waiting. I want to make love with you, Tara MaClay. Tonight. Now."

Tara practically melted at the words. She could actually feel her legs turning into great big puddles beneath her. She swept forward and took Willow into her arms, and into a passionate kiss. Her mouth moved hungrily over Willow's, searching deeper and deeper. Their lips met again and again, firm yet gentle... intense yet tender.

After several long moments, Willow pulled back, reaching her hand up and cupping Tara's cheek. Tara nuzzled into the embrace, and met Willow's eyes.

"So..." Willow said, laughing lightly. "I guess that means you're ready, too?"

Ready... oh, Goddess, Tara thought suddenly. Oh no... no no no no no no no...

As suddenly as the realization hit Tara, she pulled back the same way, taking several stumbling steps backwards.

"Tara?" Willow asked, completely confused. "What's wrong, baby?"

Tara couldn't bring herself to look at Willow. She hung her head shamefully, not knowing what to do. She was about to break her baby's heart.

"Tara, I'm ready," Willow said, smiling softly, taking Tara's sudden change in demeanor as that the blonde was worried Willow still wasn't ready. Willow took a step closer. "Really ready. Totally ready. Very ready with the ready over here, yep, that's me. I... I love you, Tara. And... I want to show you just how much."

Tara swallowed hard. She was being torn apart inside. She wanted Willow so much, and yet... she just couldn't make love to her love under false pretenses. Tara couldn't give the love of her life the one thing she wanted, and Tara had no idea how to say no without hurting Willow. If Tara told Willow no without explaining, Willow would be hurt and confused. If Tara told Willow the truth... Willow would be hurt and betrayed.

Either way, Willow was going to be hurt. There were no more excuses, no more explanations or reasons... Tara was going to have to tell Willow the truth.

Willow's smile slowly faded as she watched Tara's eyes dart around the room. It was almost as if... as if...

"Don't you want me?" Willow asked, on the verge of tears.

Tara's eyes snapped back to her love, and she saw the pain on Willow's face. She started to answer her girlfriend's question.

Then the phone rang.

This is another wonderful installment, but, I swear, you've subjected us to the most extended foreplay I have seen since "Moonlighting," was on the air.

Minor error in preparing the room; forgot the phone :D .

I like Willow's preparations, though I was already fearing what would come at the end :cry .

Tara...Tara.. what have you gotten yourself into. By delaying the moment of telling Willow the truth till forever you've ended up *having* to tell her at the worst possible moment to do so. Not a very bright idea, denial never works :) .

I do honestly wonder if Tara was planning to keep avoiding the subject forever, like that's a workable plan :) ... and sure enough Willow forced the issue without realizing it herself. I feel for Willow, went through all that effort for her surprise and it surely didn't get the intended result. Don't let her get hurt to much please, she tried so hard...:pray :pray :pray .

This one had me laughing out loud a lot:

She had actually been a little disappointed to discover the RA had left, since she had been practicing her crying-on-cue all week, and had a fresh batch of crocodile tears all ready to let loose on the unsuspecting RA.

Amazing update.

So typical of Tara to not do what she wants most in the whole world, until she is completely honest.

I have a question, and i don't know if anyone else has asked this so if they have sorry for the repeat.

BUt didn't walsh have Lowell house under surveillance, adn each off the guys rooms also? I don't think it would be that hard for maggie walsh to set up a camera in Tara's room before she moved there...

just wondering.

Loved the update by the way!! I like thast Tara was about to tell Willow the truth.

Poor Wills. Tara just has to tell her. And all it takes is one quick yank on that little cord that runs to the wall and no more stupid ringing phones. Tara: Wasn't the phone just ringing a second ago? Will: What phone? Willow so tactfully tosses the blasted thing out the window. Thanks for the warnings, BB.

Hey all. I'll get to more specific replies later, as right now I'm stuck in Philly and borrowing a friend's computer (let's just say Blamey was playing it safe an not driving home tonight).

I did want to mention a couple of things, though. First, I am really not trying to be a tease. All this sexual frustration has a purpose, one which I can't reveal at the moment. But trust me, it sets up something good.

Second, as to the question of whether Maggie has cameras... see the spoiler warnings part of my posts. Basically, after "Hush," if I don't mention it specifically, it hasn't happened. That's not, of course, to say that it won't happen, or that it will happen. You'll just have to stay tuned.

And as for the rest... I will try and update ASAP, so you'll at least know who's on the phone. :)

Willow had calculated the precise placement for maximum romantic glow That was so typical of her!

As usual you've given great insight into what they each are thinking. Willow's reasoning that Being loved by Tara gave Willow the courage to face her fears. Tara's dilemma - how to react without hurting Willow.

Oh, I just loved that image of Willow standing on one foot, caught mid-mental babble, wringing her hands and biting her lip and hoping for thudding and swooping and inability to talk....perfect Willow there.

I also loved how Willow said this:

Ah, it just rings true, especially since I recently lost all kinds of fanficcy goodness from my laptop, along with a ton of other stuff. Deep sigh.

Could easily be Buffy who called, she does has a history about "timing" or lack there of :D .

I'm more concerned with that they really shouldn't skip that needed talk for whatever reason. Any more waiting will just increase the problems/tension. Splitting now would pretty much destroy Willow, since Tara hasn't told her any reason.... so Willow is likely to make one up of her own. Usually the reasons she thinks up are faaaar worse then reality. Not good, not good.

I say they have to have that talk pretty much now, come hell or high water or evil vampires. The rest of the world be damned.

P.S. Camera's in Tara's room, wouldn't you think Walsh would have done something much earlier ? Why wait for Tara to come to like Willow ? Wouldn't make operational sense.

:jaw Great Update BB,

However are you trying to kill me here, that was a cliffhanger from Hell. I am going to have to..........borrow your muse again and spank her (of course thats more for fun and games than punishment.) Loved the planning of the evening by Willow, so like her. Question though for you......Does the evil bitch queen Walsh have a camera in Tara's room like she did in Riley? Cuz that could bring up some interesting intrigue between Walsh and Tara.

Quote:

Then Willow had decided that it all sounded too Star Trek-y and that it didn't really matter, anyway, although the words "Star Trek" had spurred a whole Tara-as-Seven-of-Nine-wearing-tight-spandex fantasy that Willow was bound and determined to bring to Tara's attention when Halloween rolled around.

You know you are going to have to add this now right? Cuz I got these images in my head and well now that can't get rid of them. Hmmmmmmm maybe Willow could perform a Vulcan "Tongue" Meld or something like that. :grin

:bounce :bounce :bounce :bounce Anywho, keep up the great job and can't wait til the next update. Oh and tell your muse she can come over again....I refilled the honey supply and got some jello also.

Ouch! we knew this was coming and yet it's painful anyway. Loved the beginning of this part where we get into Willow's head as she thinks back about what has led her there it was so Willow and therefore totally adorable. And Tara was perfect as usual until the fatal moment when she remembered. I can't take it when Wil and Tara are hurting. :(

But I have faith. ;) Thanks for this great story.

Part 16

Postby blameburner » Mon Oct 21, 2002 9:57 pm

Hey all. Yes, I eventually made it home from Philly. Yes, I had one hell of a hangover. Yes, much fun was had, though not in the way I had been hoping for. And yes, I am finally updating. Sorry, I've had some... issues... these last several days. Some very unhappy, upsetting, and totally consuming nastiness. The good news is that when this situation finally resolves, I should have lots more writing time. Anyway...

The BIG HONKIN' ANGST WARNING is still in effect. Please stock up an provisions such as tissues accordingly. Anyone suggesting stocking up on chocolate, too, would not be accused of crazy talk.

NOTE: The first half of this update takes place at approximately the same time as Part 15. The second half of this update begins where Part 15 left off, with the phone ringing. You'll understand how these two halves come together after you've read the whole update.

To revisit the Maggie/camera issue... this is, of course, one of the difficulties of doing an AU set during Seasons past, especially an AU that is relatively close to the original storyline. Nowhere in this story has there been any mention of hidden cameras, yet we of course all remember that portion of the original story as shown on tv. Obviously, Maggie's use of cameras in the show, to spy on her agents, was indicative of her character's depravity and need for control. I'm trying to keep my Maggie very close to the tv character, although I am trying to make her a bit more complex and a whole lot scarier. That being said, of course the same character traits that motivated the cameras on the show are alive and well in my Maggie. So... the question is, then, are there cameras or aren't there?

What I will say is... re-read some earlier updates. I think it's pretty clear that up through at least Part 13, there are no cameras. If there were cameras, then Maggie would know a lot more than she does up to the present. I can tell you that have been pretty up front with Maggie's feelings and thoughts. I haven't let you all in on everything Maggie's up to, but I haven't misled you, either. Anything you have read Maggie saying or thinking or doing is the truth. There are omissions, sure, but if you go back over Maggie's parts, you will have a pretty good idea of what she thinks in regard to Tara, and what she's capable of.

Oh, and a little hint for the future, and for updates past. There's usually a good reason behind my selections for the "Previously..." part. It could be just a reminder of what happened most recently, or it could be that I want you to keep something in mind while you're reading the update. You just never know...

And now for some replies...

***famer - Unresolved Sexual Tension? Sorry, it's gonna stay unresolved for a little while longer. I'm not trying to be mean, honest.

***mscheckmate - LOL! You're crackin' me up. Foreplay... now that's one way of putting it. But come on, wouldn't I be cheapening their love if I just let Tara say, "So what if I'm lying to my soulmate? I want some nookie!"???

***BFR from Paris - Well said. *G*

***Grimlock72 - I don't think Tara was planning on avoiding the truth forever. In fact, I think several times she was totally ready to tell Willow everything. But things just seem to keep getting away from out poor Agent MaClay... as for the cameras... What you always have to remember about Maggie is that as she has an intense and desperate need for control. When she feels that control being threatened, she starts acting more and more desperately, and the careful facade she has constructed masking her own depravity begins to crumble. The more desperate she becomes, the more she lashes out, and the more outrageously she behaves. We've already seen her behavior start to deteriorate in subtle ways... this update takes that to a whole new level.

***barnabasvamp - Yep, it's gonna get worse. But it sets up something really, really... nummy. Come over here and I'll whisper it in your ear.

Previously...

Two weeks ago...

"Are the programs complete?" she asked without taking her eyes off the form lying on the table.

"Nearly," a nervous looking man in a white lab coat said. "I just have to recheck the final subroutines and install them, along with the integration matrix."

"Good, good," Walsh said absently. "When can I expect completion, Dr. Engleman?"

"I need another 48 hours," Engleman said. "Then... it... should be ready for animation."

**************************

Present...

"Don't you want me?" Willow asked, on the verge of tears.

Tara's eyes snapped back to her love, and she saw the pain on Willow's face. She started to answer her girlfriend's question.

Then the phone rang.

Part 16

"How's it... um, he... doing?" Dr. Engleman asked.

"Just fine," Walsh said, brushing the hair out of Adam's face. "The animation sequence seems to have worked perfectly."

"Good, good," Engleman said, sounding relieved when he felt anything but. "Um... so... when do you expect him to wake up?" Engleman asked nervously.

Walsh smiled thinly. She knew that Engleman's main concern was that the programs he had designed for Adam's operating system did in fact work - and that Adam's current lack of consciousness wasn't caused by Engleman. The last thing Engleman wanted was for his design to be flawed, for if it was... well, Engleman knew the consequences for failure.

"Soon," Walsh said. "He'll be awake very, very soon. Then the test can begin."

"Test?" Engleman asked. "But I thought... I mean..."

"Do you have a problem, Doctor?" Walsh asked impatiently.

Engleman swallowed hard, and gathered up his nerve. "Yes, ma'am, I think maybe I do."

Walsh waited, staring the man down and crossing her arms over her chest.

"What I mean to say, ma'am," Engleman said somewhat uncertainly, "is that he isn't ready. We don't have the witch's power yet, and-"

"It doesn't matter," Walsh said, waving her hand at Engleman dismissively. "I'll get it eventually, whether it's the Rosenberg girl's or someone else's."

Engleman's shock overwhelmed his fear, and his voice grew slightly louder. "I thought you had that taken care of," Engleman said.

"I did. I do," Walsh said, growing more impatient. How dare Engleman question her authority! "I'm not so sure that Rosenberg has the kind of power we need. Recent reports from Agent MaClay indicate that the Rosenberg girl might not be the witch we had hoped for."

"Fine," Engleman said rather curtly. He was angry at Walsh. Regardless of the fact that she was his superior, and that she was quite scary, this was still at least half his project - regardless of the moral problems he had with it - and he should have been kept in the loop. "If Rosenberg doesn't have the power we need, we both know who does."

Maggie was livid. "How dare you talk about one of my children in such a way! You cannot ask me to kill one of my children!"

"Your children? Your children!?!" Engleman yelled. "You've lost your mind! Tara is not your child, and as for Adam... that... that... monstrosity... wait. What do you mean 'kill'? The Falasian Crystal is only supposed to drain the witch's power."

Walsh stayed silent, glaring at Engleman.

"You mean you lied to me?" Engleman asked, his voice loud and angry.

Walsh waited for a moment before answering. Then...

"Of course I lied, you idiot," Walsh said smugly. "I knew damn well that you wouldn't have the stomach to do what needed to be done. There is only one Falasian Crystal in this dimension, and it can only be used once, so we need to squeeze every ounce of power out of the donator that we can. And that includes the witch's soul."

"No! You... you... you can't!" Engleman sputtered. He may have done a lot of nasty things for the military, but he refused to be a party to murder. "I... I won't let you!"

Walsh's lips curved into the cruelest smile Engleman had ever seen. "Ah, Doctor Engleman," Walsh said, shaking her head. "I thought you'd say that. Such a shame."

Engleman's eyes widened in confusion. Then they widened even further as a searing pain ripped through his chest.

Then Engleman fell to the floor, dead.

Adam stood before Walsh, blood dripping from the sharp spear-like bone protruding from his right forearm. He retracted the bone back into his skin, and looked at Walsh.

"Mother," Adam said, awaiting his instructions.

Walsh smiled, reaching her hand to cup Adam's cheek.

"Such a good boy, protecting your Mother like that," Walsh said in a sickeningly sweet voice. "We can't have anyone ruining our plans, can we, Adam?"

"No, Mother," Adam said, his voice devoid of emotion.

"Now, go out through the back door. Don't let anyone see you," Walsh said, ushering Adam to the secret exit in the back of the lab. "Once you've exited the facility, access the program hidden in your subroutines labeled 'WDDD1.' It will tell you how to proceed."

"Yes, Mother," Adam said before walking out the door.

Walsh closed the door behind her creation and turned back to towards the lab. A pool of blood was seeping out from underneath Engleman's body. It really was sort of a shame. Engleman was quite a brilliant programmer. But Walsh knew that he would have had to have been dealt with eventually, once it became clear that Adam's programming had been altered. It was just that eventually had come sooner rather than later.

Now necessity dictated several things. The ultimate result of Engleman's death was that Adam's field test had to be moved up. Walsh didn't worry about her creation - she knew there was no way that even her top agents - like Riley and Tara - would be able to capture or kill Adam. But Walsh needed to know just how good Adam was. She needed to know how ineffective the best-trained soldiers in the world would be. World domination required as much.

She knew it was a little over the top, thinking of it in terms of world domination. She laughed to herself, because it reminded her of her niece's favorite cartoon, "Pinky and The Brain." She always laughed at that thought. Except that where The Brain always failed, Walsh would succeed. Life, after all, was no cartoon.

Walsh really had wanted Adam to have absorbed the witch's power from the Falasian Crystal before he was released for his field test. Yet the advanced timeline did present Walsh with an opportunity to establish a control group of sorts. Walsh would be able to see how strong Adam was before imbued with the power of witchcraft, and then how strong he was after.

As for the immediate problem of Engleman's body... actually, that presented an interesting opportunity as well. The Initiative hated to lose one of its own, and rage over a member's death could be a powerful motivator, Walsh knew. Plus Engleman's death also offered Walsh a scapegoat.

Yes, Walsh would blame Engleman's death on the doctor's secret project, Adam. She would say that she had discovered Engleman's secret and had confronted him about it, and that Adam had awoken and attacked them both, killing Engleman and wounding her before escaping. Of course, that required her to actually be wounded.

Walsh walked over to the table and picked up a large scalpel. Without hardly pausing for a breath, she slashed at her abdomen, leaving a wide gash visible through her shirt. Then, practically in the same motion, she drew the blade across her left arm. As blood began puddling on the floor from both wounds, Walsh threw the scalpel into the medical waste bag. Then she made her way out the door and hit the panic button on the wall.

Within seconds, soldiers had come pouring into the secret lab. Walsh was shouting hysterically about the thing that had killed Adam and wounded her, how Engleman was dead, and how the thing had escaped.

Within five minutes, Walsh's wounds were dressed and every agent had been alerted and the agents were massing in the briefing room at the center of the complex. Every agent but one.

Walsh sat in her office after the medics had made certain she would not lose consciousness. She said she needed a few moments alone to compose her thoughts, and no one challenged her.

She knew that as soon as Tara found out about the attack on Walsh, the blonde witch would insist on being part of the hunting party. Loyalty would demand it. Walsh hid a smile. She knew Tara so well. Besides, Tara really was the best agent The Initiative had, and if Walsh wanted an accurate test of Adam's abilities, she needed Adam to go up against her best.

Walsh wasn't worried about Tara dying. Tara could handle herself, Walsh knew.

Walsh picked up the phone and dialed Tara's dorm room.

**************************

Tara looked back and forth between the ringing phone and her girlfriend. Her heart demanded that she ignore the shrill ring of the phone, but her mind... her mind knew that the phone call could be important. No one called Tara, except for Willow, the Scoobies when they were looking for Willow because the world was ending, and... Walsh. And, well, Willow was here, so either the world was ending - again - or Walsh was calling.

"Tara, answer me," Willow pleaded. Her heart was breaking at the thought that Tara didn't want her.

"I... I..." Tara sputtered. She gave Willow an apologetic look, and reached down to pick up the phone.

"Hello?" Tara answered.

"Agent MaClay," Walsh said brusquely. "We have a situation."

"Oh, hi Margaret, how are you?" Tara asked.

"You're not alone?" Walsh deduced.

"No, not really," Tara said in a concerned tone. "Is something wrong?"

"I need you to report to headquarters, immediately," Walsh said. "Don't come through the secret entrance. Come directly to the briefing room in the staging area. We're on full alert, and that's where everyone is gathering."

Tara's shock was genuine. If she showed up in the staging area, everyone would know she was an agent. Riley would know, and her cover would be blown. Whatever it was had to be extremely serious. "Are... are you sure?"

"Yes," Walsh said tersely. "I'll explain when you arrive."

"Okay, I'll come right away, Margaret, just hang on," Tara said urgently.

Walsh hung up without another word.

"Yes, I'll be right there," Tara said to the dial tone. "Okay? It'll be okay. Bye."

Willow's hurt and fear had turned to concern for Tara and whoever was on the other end of the phone.

"What's wrong, baby?" Willow asked as Tara turned to her, visibly upset.

"Uh... that was... a friend," Tara said, moving passed Willow to grab her duffel bag out of the closet. "She's in trouble. I have to go."

"Oh... um, okay," Willow said weakly. She desperately wanted to finish the conversation they had been having and find out what was going on between them, but she would not deny Tara's need to help out her friend. "Anything I can help with?"

"No," Tara said quickly, wincing at the seeming harshness of her voice. She turned to Willow and her breath caught. Willow was looking at Tara with a tremendous amount of pain in her eyes, but also a tremendous amount of concern and compassion and... love.

Tara stepped up to Willow, who looked down at her feet. Tara lifted Willow's chin and placed a tender kiss on Willow's lips, pouring in every ounce of love she had for the redhead. Tara only hoped it would be enough.

"I'm sorry, Willow," Tara said. "I really have to go."

Willow just nodded, unwilling to trust her voice not to crack.

"I don't know how long I'll be," Tara said, backing up towards the door. "I might be gone all night, so you might as well go home. I'll call you when I get back."

"Promise?" Willow asked quietly.

"I promise," Tara said sincerely. "I love you, Willow."

And with that, Tara was gone, leaving Willow standing in the middle of the room. Alone.

*************************

Tara walked into The Initiative staging area, still in her street clothes. No one really noticed her. No one, that is, except Riley.

"Tara?" Riley asked, walking quickly over to the blonde. "What are you... how did you..."

"Agent MaClay," Walsh said, coming out of her office and walking towards Tara. "Glad you could join us."

" Agent MaClay?" Riley said in total disbelief. Tara winced.

"There will be time for that later," Walsh said, "but right now we've got a demon to catch."

Riley nodded, but continued to stare at Tara in disbelief.

"I promise I'll explain," Tara said sincerely. "Trust me. Please?"

Riley just stared at her for a moment. Finally he seemed to make a decision. He nodded, and the two agents joined the rest of their brethren.

Walsh explained what had happened with Adam and Dr. Engleman - or at least her version of it, anyway. Some of the agents gasped in disbelief that one of their own would create such a thing. Others narrowed their eyes in anger that one of their own - regardless of the bad things he had done - was murdered.

Riley was in the later category, though he was more upset that Walsh had been attacked as well. As for Tara... Tara wasn't sure what to think. There was something about Walsh's story, something that bothered the blonde witch, something... wrong.

Tara couldn't put her finger on it, much like she hadn't been able to get a grasp on anything her instincts had been trying to tell her lately. She didn't know if it was the slight monotone to Walsh's voice, or the strange glint in her eyes, or... all Tara knew was that something was just... wrong... about all of this.

But there was no time to worry about that now. They had a demon-man-thing to catch.

"All right people, let's saddle up," Riley said, having been put in command of the mission to capture Adam. The agents split up into six groups, each made up of three two-man teams, with everyone being organized by Riley into their usual units. Everyone, that is, except Tara. She had no usual unit.

"Tara, er... Agent MaClay," Riley called out to Tara, who made her way over to the group leader. "So you're really an agent, huh?" Riley asked.

"Yes, sir," Tara responded, having slipped fully into military mode. "For two years now," she added.

Riley nodded and then turned to Forrest and said, "Forrest, you go with Hunt and Bishop." Forrest nodded and ran off to meet up with his new teammates. Riley turned back to Tara, handing her one of the shock rifles. "Tara, you're with me."

Tara nodded, accepting the weapon and checking it like a pro. Riley smiled.

"Ready to go a-huntin' fow bunny wabbits?" Riley asked in a passable Elmer Fudd impersonation.

"Ba-deep, ba-deep, ba-deep, that's all folks," Tara answered, taking the safety off her weapon.

Riley smirked. He liked his new partner already.

"Move out!" he ordered the group.

And they headed out in search of Adam.

I feel so sorry for Willow. Tara just leaves her there hurt and aroused. Tara really needs to tell Willow everything and talk things out.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.
Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Willow: Hi, um Tara. I was wondering maybe you want to go out some time for coffee? food? Kisses and gay love?

Why do I have a feeling that the Scoobies are somehow going to get involved in the "demon-man-thing" hunt and that Willow will find out the truth about Tara the hard way (like Buffy did about Riley in Hush)... :hmm

So mean to leave poor Willow hanging there... :cry

Walsh and her timing! :rage Actually, no. Walsh, period! :rage

Very good update! :clap

Oh yikes. Now we know what Walsh has planned for either Willow or Tara. You've done a great job of capturing her ruthlessness. I'm wondering about this programme - WDDD1 - she had hidden from Engleman. Most curious!

Tara's instincts are telling her Maggie's story isn't to be trusted. I'm glad to see this. I was also pleased that Riley got over his shock at seeing Tara in The Initiative, and tried to make her feel at ease by joking with her.

I really liked the update. What I found fascinating was the utter ruthlessness of Prof. Walsh. That was something that was touched upon in the series but never fully explored. I'm glad that Tara is becoming wary of her.

Also liked Riley teaming up with Tara. I'm one of the people who actually did like season 4 Riley. It was what he became after s4 that turned me off. He & Tara ought to work well together.

I agree with saule77 that Willow will probably find out about everything the hard way. It looks like it's gonna get messy.

As long as Willow & Tara get together at the end, that's all that matters.

Thanks for letting me ramble,

Wow! I can't believe how much I loved the update, considering the Will/Tara angst *frown*. I felt soooo sorry for poor little lonely Willow, and I wanted to give her a hug! And Tara & Riley are such a funny pair! Elma Fudd..:lol

*looks anxious* Willow and Tara will get their fun pretty soon, right?? :hmm

Thanks! :D
