Ah, Jordana Brewster...she is a goddess. I've seen her so far in The Faculty, Fast and the Furious, and The Invisible Circus (with Cameron Diaz, no less). The woman can act. One of those looks from those wonderful eyes and I'd just melt.

I like her a lot because there's nothing forced at all about her. She's so very natural. She appears to be very comfortable with herself, not a forced bone in her beautiful body, IMO.

I think I'll have to go see it again on my next day off. Then maybe buy the soundtrack. Then buy a poster or something. Then buy Jordana Brewster photos from eBay. Then the dvd.

Maybe I'm obsessing, huh???

It was so refreshing to see a lesbian themed film that actually "got it right."

Romance on a scale of 1-10? I'd give it a 9. Seriously, they did really well with portraying the budding relationship between the two. Not a whole lot of intense kissage or anything, but the dialogue between them when they're discussing their feelings for each other, and their general interactions, are spot on. I was all heart-clutchy more times than I can count, down to the very last, cheesy, sweet scene. It was great on that scale, and Jordana and Sara have great chemistry. There's never a point where I feel like, "Oh, I'm watching these straight actresses pretend, and look how uncomfortable they are" or anything like that.



It's a sweet, sappy love story more than anything else, and the spy stuff is just comic filler.

Well, Corina Chocano at the Los Angeles Times gave the film a very positive review. The headline is: "Parody, with plaid minis - D.E.B.S. is the rare teen spoof that works, thanks to the sweet love story at its center."



I agree with the review. It's a funny, silly, sweet film. We cracked up several times. And the love story is really, really sweet.



Neither one of us has seen Jordana Brewster before, and we were trying to figure out who she looked like. We finally decided that if Ali McGraw and Katherine Ross had a child, she would look like Jordana. If you don't know who these two actress' are, trust me, it's a compliment.



Scud was riot. Scud and Janet were a riot. The lip syncing scene had us rolling. The whole film is really funny.



I love feel-good films and it is so refreshing, and rare, to have a lesbian feel-good film.



There was also some added humor for me personally. I don't want to reveal anything, but there is a sign hanging in Lucy Diamonds lair making a rather negative comment about D.E.B.S. It was hard not to take it personally (in a funny way).

I've seen the movie twice and I will probably see it again before it goes out of the theater in my area. I am soo not the "target" audience for this film, but I loved it anyway. So did the entire theater I saw it with on Saturday night. Everyone clapped.. which is quite impressive for a cynical, jaded New York City audience. It's definitely one of the sweeter teen romances I've seen in a very really long time.



... oh and Jordana Brewster... she's a hottie and a half! I think I need to see "The Fast and the Furious" again.



Is it wrong that I can't stop listening to Erasure's "A Little Respect"? Wait, don't answer.

Actually, Jordana Brewster also said that kissing a girl to her was no different than a guy in terms of filming movies. She said that the reason filming kissing scenes in movies is sometimes ackward is because she's doing it in FRONT of people, and you're being judged and directed on it, not because it was a girl. Sara backed her up on that one too.



(I also just have to say with glee: I SAW IT YESTERDAY! It was excellent. But I won't torture you too much . one of my favorite lines in the whole film (which doesn't spoil anything out of context): "You owe me fifty bucks".)

You know, I watched the clips of the interviews and read the articles (Sara Foster looks so much better in that Maxin shoot than I thought in the movie). I've decided that I have to withdraw myself from any further media coverage of the movie, and hide my head under a blanket for a while, at least until the dvd comes out.



The problem for me is how the advertising and media coverage for this movie both ignores the lesbian equation and exploits it at the same time. I haven't seen a single ad for this movie that brings any attention to the lesbian romantic storyline, which is curious since it's at the center of the movie and is actually the driving force behind the plot. Everything is geared towards grabbing that male 18-35 magical demographic, which is a disappointment. Just once I'd like to hear someone describe the whole "crime-fighting hotties with killer bodies" as something that appeals to more than the men, since there are numerous lesbians out there that no doubt got a kick out of it.



In the interviews, however, one question seems to come up without fail: What was it like/how did you have to prepare for the experience of kissing another girl? I am so tired of this question! Why does it have to be something so terrifying and so different as to warrant "special preparation"? No one asks how a straight actress prepares for kissing her male costar. It's a job, people. They're actresses. They're playing a role, and one would hope that they were professional enough to approach it that way, and not get all icky and panicky about it.



Unfortunately, the responses to that question haven't been particularly educational for the mass public. They had to knock back a few wine coolers to get ready. Was it really that bad? Did it really necessitate getting tipsy to kiss another girl...in a role? Doing your job? I can't help but wonder if it was really that traumatic for them, or if they're playing into that "Tee hee, I kissed a girl" thing that seems to appeal to some folks (re: men with lesbian fantasies).



It just brings to mind all the lesbian pairings that came before, and how differently those actresses seemed to treat the whole thing. I can't say that I've read every single interview about their lesbian plotlines for the following actresses, but I don't recall Amber or Alyson, or Eden and Elizabeth (Bianca and Maggie from AMC), or Mischa and Olivia (Marissa and Alex from The OC) or Mischa and Evan (Katie and Jessie from O&A) talking about their experiences as if it were something they really had to brace themselves for. It seemed to fall more into the "this is a role I took, and I'm going to do it well" mindset.



I might be overreacting, but it was just kinda disappointing to see a movie that I thought was originally geared towards a lesbian/lesbian-friendly audience be marketed in a way that seems more about voyeurism into girl-on-girl action than anything else. It kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth, which sucks because I really dig this movie.



Just my two cents.

Yeah, I vaguely recall reading that somewhere. It slipped my mind, because it seemed to me one small positive in a growing list of negatives with all things considered. Really, I think it was the "lezzie twist" from the Conan interview that got my wheels turning, and I'm going on kneejerk emotions here. Some things just didn't sit very comfortably with me, and I brought it up with the hopes that someone (like you, meleeQ, would discuss it and make some sense and bring some other views to it.



So thanks for pointing that out.

Welll, it was hard work, however I finally managed to see DEBS.



Without being too spoilery, a few observations.



I could have watched two hours of Lucy D and Amy. I could have read a whole book about them. After seeing the film, I am dying to see what they put in the DVD, and will be buying it ASAP when it comes out.



Is it Shakespere? No. Does it hold the emotional resonance of Million dollar baby? No. It's not supposed to.



Simply put, I wanted an adorable love story, a kissing scene and some laughs. I got all that and more.



Good Points:

Any scene with Amy and Lucy

Scud

Chicks with Guns - WEEEEEE

One liners.



Bad Points:

Ocassionally felt things were a bit rushed.

Characters other than Amy, Lucy and Scud could have been more fleshed out.

I wish it had been longer.

I have this thing ... it's a plaid thing. It's my thing, with the plaid - and my deep abiding love for All Things Plaid. Which is not to say this thing is in any way a deep dark dirty fetish, it's just that plaid makes me happy. I don't know why - it just does.

And, oh my god, did this movie have a whole lot of plaid in it.

I saw a preview for this movie awhile back, before I knew about its background as a short film at Sundance, yadda yadda - and has been mentioned, the preview in no way hinted at any gayness whatsoever. Is it wrong that merely the idea of all that plaid had me dying to see the movie before I knew it was a lesbian love story? Is it wrong that every now and again, the phrase "embedded within the SAT ..." pops into my head, and I crack up? Is it wrong that every time I think about the fact that Dominique was always smoking and only ONCE (by my count) did she actually light a cigarette, I am shaking with helpless mirth?

Let me just say, when the total gayness of it all is added in, with a great big planet-sized serving spoon, I consider this to be my favorite movie ever.

Now, this movie is not for everyone. There are lots of people who will (and do) consider this to be the dumbest movie ever (and I feel sorry for them - really, I do). But me? I could watch this movie once a week for the rest of my life and not get tired of it.

I think this thread has been really interesting, and I'm definitely separating the movie from the marketing of the movie in my mind. As I recall, this movie was PG-13 - and I'm pretty sure that when I saw the preview, it was a preview showing before the movie 'Ice Princess' (yes, yes, I know ... I saw it with my mom ... we go see Disney movies together whenever we can, and I got to giggle the whole way through it because Michelle Trachtenberg's hair was very, very shiny).

So, really, this is kind of interesting. It previewed before a Disney movie about ice-skating, with no hint whatsoever of anything gay (despite that being, y'know, the entire PLOT of the movie), but it sounds like the late-night talk show circuit really dug into that aspect. I haven't seen any of those interviews, so I'm just kind of dumping thoughts into the ether in regards to what I've read here.

My guess is that this movie was being marketed to the "girl power" crowd and the "girls making out - awesome" crowd - hence the disconnect between the two different venues, and how some things ignored the lesbian love story entirely, and others focused on it. Umm ... just to be safe, I'm putting this next part in the spoiler tags ... it's a spoiler for the short film version, so if you've already seen that, you're good.

Spoiler:

Add in how the hilarity of the short film revolved around the surprise aspect of Lucy and Amy going at it like especially spunky rabbits while the DEBS were breaking in to rescue Amy from Lucy's evil clutches, and it starts to make sense how this film ended up being marketed the way it was.

I'm not sure I actually have a point here, except that this movie was marketed strangely for a variety of reasons (not the least of which is that, yeah, movies are a business, and the 18-35 male demographic nets a lot more money than the lesbian demographic), but that marketing disconnect, to my mind, was to get this movie to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, and that wider audience wasn't >just< the 18-35 male demographic.

I guess I'm just kind of amused - because anybody who saw this movie for the hot girl-on-girl action did not get what they were expecting. This movie, at its heart, is a love story - so despite the guns, the chain-smoking, and the plaid mini-skirts, this was a >total< "chick flick".

The "chicks" happened to be lesbians.

Did I mention I loved this movie?

I just saw the movie and I have to say, I loved it.

It was very funny, and the cast was great. All four debs are gorgeous, as is Lucy

Anytime you put a couple together onscreen, the writing is important, the acting is important. But something that gets overlooked a lot is something that should be right at the top of the list...chemistry. You can have great writing, two great actors, but if they don't click, then it's all just flat . And in this movie, Jordana Brewster and Sara Foster have great chemistry together. Lucy and Amy are really into each other and that makes all the difference.

Sass is right, at its heart, this is a love story and because the leads have chemistry, it makes you care about them. Which makes you enjoy this movie even more. I will definitely get the DVD when it comes out.

That's exactly what it was Sass, a plain love story with chicks. I too just saw this movie and will definitely be getting that DVD.

Ok, see I must admit that I have this thing for a kind of movie, your Valley Girls of the world, your Moonstrucks, your Just One of the Guys. Your basic comedy that's a love story. You have the good girl who does wrong by falling for the wrong guy (but he's the right guy really). All the friends hate it, must be hidden, there's a rejection but then a lovely reunion at the end. I once watched Valley Girl with a friend and we pretend that Nicolas Cage was a girl. Heee, it worked too! This movie is just that movie I wished someone had made. It's that genre as opposed to the coming out genre which so many movies take on (girl falls for girl or boy for boy, mom finds out, there is rejection blah blah it's all very serious). Nothing wrong with that genre but this genre is what I wished for so long they'd make. Now they have. I love this movie a ton. I love that they spent some money and actually put neat songs in it (and not say... Betty or something). Anyway, this movie rocked.

I recommend it highly. Get it, buy it, support it.
