On a lighter note: queer comic strips

Postby Kieli » Sun Feb 22, 2004 12:46 pm

I didn't know if there was a thread devoted to queer comics anywhere soooo....I thought I'd start one. I'm suddenly finding myself reading more of Jane's World. This poor lesbian is at her wits' end (and I think we can relate to some of her wacky problems).

For some reason the Chelsea Boys also crack me up. True, they're stereotypical but I try to look beyond that and just laugh at the weird situations they get themselves into.

And you can't help but crack up at Alison Bechdel's work.

Are there any other gay comics around that you all know of?

Hothead Paisan!!! :heart

I loved HH back in the day and I still read the old ones every now and then. The world needs Hothead Paisan. I miss her a whole lot. :cry

"I'm not your fuckin' spritz-head girlfriend, I'm HOTHEAD PAISAN!"

:rofl

Please tell me there are other HH fans out there...

:lmao :laugh I remember when I first picked up a copy of Hothead Paisan to read for kicks and giggles in the White Rabbit bookstore in Raleigh, N.C. I think I scared half of the customers away I was laughing so hard.

I can't find Hothead anywhere! None of the comic shops around here carry her! :sob

Willow: Hey Buff. One more thing. Buffy: Yeah? Willow: I’m gay. Buffy: Okay, Will. Xander owes me ten bucks.

Ooh I love comics! Liliane by Leanne Franson is hilarious, I think the funniest strip was "Bonga Barbie", I don't remember what number it was in but it had me in stitches. I haven't seen any new issues for years but then I don't really frequent comic shops or have the money to spend on them right now.

Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore has to have an honourable mention, if only for the fact that were it not for him I may not have ever got together with my gf. :luv (or maybe it would have just taken another 3 years, but that's a different story :blush ) It's another one I haven't read for years, the earlier issues were great though.

I have to agree Hothead is so funny, probably because of the way it's SO over the top!

You know I could have sworn I read somewhere that HH was coming back...now I must go verify it. :hmm

I entertained myself the other night by breaking out Dykes To Watch Out For, Hot and Bothered. Fun, fun, fun.

I'm a huge fan of Howard Cruse's Wendel, which ran in The Advocate in the '80s and has been collected in book form. One of the best, and funniest continuing comic strips ever done, "queer" or "straight." He's got some samples on his web site:

Cruse is also the creator of Stuck Rubber Baby, a graphic novel about a young gay man coming of age (and out) in the civil rights-era south.

I check out the goings-on in "Jane's World" every day, and am constantly checking for updates of "Dykes to watch out for". They're both always good for a giggle :rofl

For those who like queer stories with male leads I can heartily recommend the 8 issue mini series Enigma. It's simply amazing.

Oohhh so many good comics to choose from. Now I can go and get my kicks and giggles from some of these other sites. I have to admit, I never understood the premise for Strangers in Paradise (although Terry Moore is an excellent author and I have read his books before). Anyone care to enlighten me on the premise of the series?
