The BBC's website has plenty of links and pictures, some video clips (click on 'preview clips), and some wallpaper and screensavers. It's at the address below:

www.bbc.co.uk/drama/tipping/

I've also scanned some publicity pics from assorted British publications: go here, then click on 'Tipping the Velvet'.

Reviews I've read so far have been mixed. Some said there were too many sex scenes, but I thought they were pretty central to the plot. There was also an article today in my paper saying that some people had complained to the BBC about 'lesbian filth' on their screens .. but just as many had complained that there wasn't enough lesbian sex!

I personally thought that the first ep was excellent. I really, really loved that scene where Nan is smoking in bed after they've had sex for the first time. I am straight, and I found that scene incredibly erotic. Looking forward to seeing Anna Chancellor and Jodhi May next week too.

Willow worries that the gang won't like her anymore. Maybe she could try to rape one of them, leave a fiance at the altar, and tie up her friends so a demon could kill them. Then she'd fit right in.

I loved the show too. And it says in my paper as well that the BBC got lots of complaints saying there wasn't enough sex in it :lol

In my TV guide it says for next week

Quote:
Nan feels betrayed & starts to earn a living giving men pleasure, not on stage but down dark alleys (me - but I think it's as a male prostitute). She is rescued from this life by a wealthy widow, who takes her on as a sex slave, adding Nan to the other toys in her box.

From a purely historical point of view I'm looking forward to learning all about Victorian sex-toys....they didn't have batteries then did they? ;)

I have to wonder what the folks who complained about the "lesbian filth" thought they were going to be watching when they tuned into BBC2 on Wednesday night. The BBC have been pretty clear that it's a lesbian drama right from the start, and took every opportunity to mention that it was sexually explicit! And if they didn’t watch it, just formed their opinion from the ads, they have no right to complain at all! :no

Besides, it wasn't as sexually explicit as I was expecting and, IMHO, compared to some of the het dramas out there, it was positively discreet. :shy

Thanks miss calendar this book does sound intriguing, and I guess I will be making a run to a bookstore in the very near future. And thanks tyche for the link to the BBC's website I enjoyed being able to download the clips to get a taste of this drama. I look forward to hearing about the other parts once the kittens get a chance to see it on screen.

Rane matey- I totally agree. Sister My Sister was really disturbing. I found that the 2 leads had heaps of chemistry - if you forgot about the sisters bit...um...and the gruesome murder at the end. But Jodhi May - Hotty Mchot.

The book does have a happy ending. I won't tell you what it is,but I loved it.

Don't have time just now to read through all the comments about the series, because I've just used up my allotment of internet junkie morning time to download and ogle, twiceover, the clip. Hee.

Very nicely done. Thanks, Xita and famer. :D

Oh, and wasn't this thead originally meant to have something to do with euphemisticky goodness? Or shelling shrimp? Or something of the sort? *head scratch*

Silly me, must have it confused with the "extra bendy spoons" thread.

Euphemisticky? Is that how that is spelled? Huh. I'd heard kittens use it but, until now, I always thought that they were alerting each other about sticky femmes. :hmm

And yes, silly you indeed. The "extra bendy spoons" thread is a private, and heavily moderated, forum here on the kitten. I heard admittance is limited to those kittens donning gay apparel. Burberry hot pants and school girl outfits, mostly.

I've added a new picture to my album of Tipping the Velvet pics (link above.)

Anyway, here are some articles. The first is kind of depressing, though:

Rachael Stirling speaks out about press homophobia

(I particularly liked this quote:

"There's no doubt [my character] Nan's process of self-discovery is the most challenging part for a young actress I have ever read, but then you get all these male journalists asking you what it's like to kiss a girl."

"I just think, 'you're a bloody man, you tell me!'.)

I read an editorial in the newspaper today that complained about this series. Mainly because the Beeb had promised much lesbian sex and the critic thought it hadn't delivered and that there could be more... It said that it's about time the Beeb delivered what it promised. Heh.

Ah yeah, after that BBC lady with her lovely voice introduced the first part I was expecting more fogged up windows, not that there is any reason to complain. I guess they just had to make sure that everyone who was close to the tv would sit down and watch. It must be really confusing to be the BBC. Here they go cutting Willow and Tara snuggling in their PJs in bed during Family and there they go and show 2 naked women tipping the velvet. Of course it was ok now as they were airing this a wee bit later and all children go to bed before 8 in this day and age of course. So the eyes of our wee youngsters will not be exposed to these unnatural acts which would turn them all into lesbians.

From 'This Is London':

'Lesbian sex was far too tame'

Quote:
Only a "handful of people" complained about some of the most explicit lesbian sex scenes ever shown on terrestrial television, the BBC said today.

And some viewers even phoned to complain the first part of the Victorian drama Tipping The Velvet was not explicit enough, despite scenes which one critic had said would "have Queen Victoria turning in her grave".

Actually, I’m surprised by how they have shown Kitty and Nan together. From what I remember of the book sex between those two was pretty much ‘stumbled upon’. One minute Nan is laying on top of Kitty and it just happens. It’s a very silent and unspoken act between the two of them and Kitty doesn’t talk about it at all. I would expect more, in terms of sex, in the upcoming parts because, especially when Nan hits the streets and meets up with Diana Lethaby that is when she becomes much more sexual and experimental. So, maybe there is still a lot more to come… no pun intended of course!

Oddly, I'm going to forego my usual drivel about accents and ask our British kittens a serious question: How do the scenes in the clip compare to heterosexual scenes which air on BBC2 during the same hours of the evening? I don't have any sense of how explicit scenes can be over there, so I have nothing to compare it to but my own country's stunningly progressive perspective on representations of lesbian sex: "Um, Amber could you maybe ease up on touching Aly's arm -- this is getting a little too risque, a little too lesbian. We're not running a porno show you know."

Ruth, look at it this way, at least you live in a country that can produce, air and support something like this. I will be on my 13th husband before my country begins to follow suit. :rolleyes

I think generally the sex scenes compare equally with their heterosexual counterparts shown after the 8-9pm watershed. I don't think the portrayal of lesbian sex is such a breakthrough, but more so that the programme's protagonist is gay and so are most of the supporting characters.

The press build up before the show was massive, and generally emphasised the shock factor of the risque lesbian sex element (something I think was also pushed by the pr camp too). I think that's why people were complaining about 'not enough sex' or it being 'too tame', because it had been so built up beforehand, people expected something groundbreaking! But then we haven't seen part 2 yet!

At 9 to 10pm in the UK, the heterosexual sex shown on all channels is usually about as graphic as the lesbian sex on "Tipping the Velvet."

It's weird but I think the UK actually has a more relaxed attitude about representations of gay life on TV than the US. Over here we had a lesbian kiss on "Family Affairs", a fairly simple kiss - but the show aired at 6.30pm one day and was repeated the next day at 12.30pm, unedited, and no-one seemed to bat an eyelid!
