But I'm a Cheerleader

Postby notallgrown » Fri Aug 15, 2003 7:40 am

eeeek, this is so scary, postin a new thread as a newbie- but i honestly have checked through the index and can't see a similar thread. moderaters, very very sorry if i'm doin sommit wrong , won't be offended if you move this post.

i was just wonderin whether anyone has seen 'but i'm a cheerleader', a film compltely devoted to people acceptin homosexuality. i have to admit it is the most bizarre film i'v ever seen, i think the surrealism is intended so that people don't take offense to the sterotypes. and hell are there a lot of sterotypes. i think that is the intention of the film tho, to show how wrong sterotypes can be, and how ridiculous they are!

anyone else seen it, have any comments? and anyone else think clea duvall is hot?? . she plays a lesbian (graham) in the film, and is also openly gay in real life- i think she's great!

once again, moderaters, sorry if i'v done somethin wrong in this post, i'm new and confused! (i shall continue swottin up on the FAQ, and shudn't be confused much longer )

I'm no moderator but I believe we've talked about this movie in the Television and Movie Recommendation/Discussion Thread!

Which you can find here.

I love But I'm a Cheerleader :heart

It's a great movie, very over the top but still very sweet. And get this, none of the gay people in this movie die :shock Who knew this was even possible?

Clea Duvall is a total hottie :eyebrow

Melanie Lynskey! :heart (I'm such a sucker for accents...plus glasses...wow.)

The whole thing just seemed really playful to me. It would have to be, I think, to get those stereotypes by in a way that's not offensive. I felt like this movie was for us, though, and I think we can joke amongst ourselves about our own stereotypes. Sometimes, anyway. ;)

Crap, now I want to watch it again! (This is not a bad thing.)

maudmac- completely agree about it bein a film for 'us' sort of thing. it's annoyin that all teen movies are boy meets girl. why not girl meets girl, or boy meets boy? so i think that's definately a good thing. plus the fact none of the gay characters were evil or died (that girl who wore all black came across as a bitch- but not evil, and still totally gorgeous !).

i think it might have been offensive if it was just gay and lesbian stereotypes that were made to look quite funny, but it wasn't, the whole straight stereotypes of the sporty male breadwinner and girly house wife were made to be rly funny aswell. i think basically it showed how outdated those sort of ideas are.

plus it was a laugh!

hi again. this is weird, i was just checkin to see whether natasha lyonne was gay too when i came across an artice in which it said 'neither of us (clea or natasha) is gay'. now i'd definately definately seen a website which had quotes from clea sayin she was gay. so who knows, maybe they were made up?? tho that wud be SUCH a dissapointment to me, cors clea's hot! and i was rather hopin she was a lesbian...

anyway, i know the kitten board isn't in to speculation of private lives of actors/ actresses (is it?), so i shan't go on. all i can do is live in hope

if anyone does know one way or the other for definite, please post n say so!

I´ve seen this movie maybe 7 times now. And I still love it. The whole plot made me laugh. And the music is fantastic. Everytime I watch it I understand more. I just have it in english. My german is way better than my english. :whistle

Those stereotypes were great fun to see.

And Clea Duvall is an absolute hottie.

I love this movie. A friend of mine was in the bathroom behind Clea Duvall once at a womyns festival. hehe.

As for the movie being about people accepting homosexuals. It isn't. It's about people who try to change homosexuals and in that find acceptance amongst themselves. Not others really.

Amen to that Vampire Willow. I love the entire cast of this movie, but Natasha Lyonne really made my heart melt, especially when she sang to -or rather- cheerleaded for Clea Duvall's character in the end. There is too much to praise about this movie. It definitely deserves a thread of it's own.

I love Melanie, since I saw her in Heavenly Creatures, so I am down with that!

Natasha is so funny, I love her in any movie. And Clea? Well Clea is just hot. I also love the Ru Paul Casting, brilliant!

However, I must admit this movie doesn't repeat well for me. *Waits for the stones to be thrown, I think I just don't buy natasha as any kind of cheerleader so that's kind of hard especially in the climatic rescue scene!

I still think it's great, and I'll catch it if it is on, just won't put the dvd on myself.

i really liked this movie, but i kinda agree with you xita about not really buying natasha as a cheerleader. i was a cheerleader, and you're supposed to be all crisp and loud, and she wasn't really.

but it was still a really great movie. and yeah, clea is definitely hot. and whether or not she is gay, i thought i remembered reading somewhere that she had a girlfriend ...

I adore this movie, as strange as it is. I think it speaks volumes without necessarily trying to. It incorporates so many stereotypes that it's very comical in a sense, but then subtly breaks down those stereotypes to get to the deeper meaning. Or maybe that's just my obsessive watching of the movie. :D Either way, it's a great movie, and Clea Duvall is certainly hot (and as far as I know dating Radio Sloan formerly of the band "The Need").

Hee, that's ok, I didn't buy RuPaul as a man. :p

Actually I think Natasha's character may have been the only one that wasn't a stereotype. It's interesting really, she was surrounded by stereotypes, her parents, her shallow girlfriends, the jock boyfriend etc. Maybe she stood out to them because she did not fit into her role of straight christian daughter cheerleader girlfriend and they started collecting the evidence that proved to them what they knew all along: she must be a lesbian, what else could it be. She must be cured or be damned.

Anyway, now I want to see it again as well. Fortunately I am free for the next four days, and the movie improved for me after more viewings, so the DVD was definitely worth it for me and watching it again should be fun. The extra's are nice, and well, this movie deserves all the support it can get I think.

I think Natasha's character actually works better for not being such an obvious stereotype. And my personal experience with high school cheerleaders is that they aren't all so stereotypically cheerleader-y anyway, which probably says more about my high school than cheerleaders themselves.

Well the stereotypical cheerleader would be very enthusiastic about getting her face vacuum cleaned by the handsome popular guy's mouth, but not this cheerleader. Judging from the flashes we get into her thoughts she probably was very enthusiastic about cheerleading ;) , just not about all the obligatory stuff that surrounded it.

Ahven't seen this myself but it's always sounded interesting.

Cliches;I used to get a eprverse delight from asking women who didn't fit the "cheerleader stereotype" if they'd been one. Usually the answer included words to the effect of "do I seem the type that would ahve been" and I'd coem back with "no, that's why I asked"; I hope my snese of humor has grown past that sort of thing by now.

Wasn't Clea Duvall actually Marcie Ross in BtVS Season 1 "Out of Mind, Out of Sight"?
