Val's digital drawings (updated: 8/12)

Postby Spighy » Sat May 27, 2006 7:27 am

So, I've finally decided to post my drawings here. :paranoid
I haven't been drawing for ages: when I was a kid I loved to spend hours with my colored pencils, but when I got my first PC and discovered Paint shop pro I pretty much stopped drawing on paper - high school and later university were an issue, too. Lately I've found my drawing box again, and with it all my drawings, so I decided to try my hand at digitally colouring them. This is the first one I made, I had never used some photoshop tools usually needed specifically to draw, but after many trials and errors I was really proud of the end result. I'd love to know what you all think of it. :pray

This is the original drawing

and this the coloured version (click for full view)

That's a great picture. It's got a mangaish quality to it that I really like :)

When FOTS said

I had no idea you could do that kind of thing with PSP

I thought she mean PlayStation Portable and thought, "I had no idea you could draw with one of those things. I should have guessed it actually meant Paintshop Pro. :blush

I hope you post some more pictures here.

Hiya Miss sneaky Maniac ;-)

I didn't expect you were going to post one of your drawings this weekend so I was quite surprised :)

Well you already know how much I love this one, you did a really great job Val :clap. The colours and effects you used are just wonderful. Darn I need to find a new hobby ;-)

Hope to see more soon Dr :peace

:shock OMG! That's awesome!!! It looks like the drawings from the "real comics." I hope you share more of your drawings.

Good Job! Really, really impressive!

Hey - have you tried illustrator? I find it easier to edit drawings with it than photoshop - and while I don't actaully own one of those fabulous drawing ptens - they work marvelously with both programs. drool. I used to use streamline a lot to scan drawings into illustrator - that was handy too.

Thanks everyone for your replies! :blush

FOTS: thank you! Actually, I made this with Photoshop, but apart from the fireball I didn't use any filter or effect, so you can definitely do something like this with PSP too. :peace

TheBoss: I AM NOT POUTY! :smash (I'm Dr. Pouty for ya!!). Having that pic as my yahoo avatar has been a big mistake :lol Thanks Ces, I know you didn't expect me to post, so... surprise ;) and I'm not really talented, I just like to dabble in the graphic arts :P

justin, thank you, and it looks mangaish because it *is* mangaish ;) She's Lina Inverse from the manga Slayers, to be specific. And hey, she's a redheaded witch too! About the PSP, I know what you mean: it happened in reverse to me! When they announced the games for the PSP I did a double take... how can you play in Paint shop pro? Then I got it :p

petal of roses: Hey Psychic Mom Maniac! Here's another maniac calling me sneaky... it must be really true, then! ;) Thanks Rosey, and would you believe that I used only about 15 colours? All the shading is done with the dodge and burn tools, with me guessing as I went. I'm glad you think I did a good job! :-D

SJ: thank you so much! :peace

ambercissism: awww, thank you :blush there'll be definitely be more drawings, but not so often because at the stage of inexperience I'm in, they take a lot of time, plus I have to juggle them with Maniacs duty! ;) I might have something up soon, tho :sh

Emms: aw Emms, thanks, you're making me blush! :blush I've seen your drawings, yours is the real talent! I just played around with Photoshop :p

db: thanks! :-D Actually yes, I'm starting to learn to use illustrator, but right now I find myself more comfortable with photoshop and even tho I own a graphic tablet this drawing is completely done with the mouse. No streamline either - I started to work on this drawing with the aim to learn to use the pen tool, and it really helped... it was a mistery to me, so it was a lot of hit and miss, but now I use it constantly.

Replies and then a new one ;-)

BossyBoss: his name is Speedy, like my friend's hamster :P And he's purple because my blog's colour scheme is purple, so he blends perfectly ;)

SJ: thanks, everyone loves purple! :flower

This is another character I drew for the blog, but then I ended up using the other one:

and in colour, this time a bit more realistic:

The next one isn't actually a drawing, just something born from a play with words - and a wacky brain, no doubt!

I call it Teleggvision :laugh

Val,

These are really great. I've been thinking of getting into stuff like this myself for after retirement.

Did you go to school for this or learn along the way??

I'm in awe and a bit jealous. ;-)

Thank you for sharing,

Anna :peace

I love the drawings of the little critter (mouse? rat? hamster?)! So very cute. I am actually in awe of that first drawing. A big WOW to the colorization. How the heck did you do that??

Hey everyone! :wave

Anna: Aw, thank you :p I didn't go to school, I learnt to use paint shop pro and later photoshop all by myself, with lots of tutorials, hours upon hours of practice, tons of trials and errors and a lot of frustration ;) But it was definitely worth it! :)

Emms: thank you so much, Emms :blush I have a friend who's really fond of hamsters, in fact the blog we have together with a couple of other friends is called Hamstersforever (in italian, of course) :lol that's why I drew the lil sweeties up here. :-D

Auntie Barb: thanks Barb, I hope I won't fail with the next ones either, then! :kiss1

Del: Yes, teleggvision, I know :lmao and I'm even planning to make "Teleggphone! :sh The critter is supposed to be a hamster, but the first one is more like a cross with a rat (see the tail? totally not hamster-like!) and in fact, the name of the file was "critter1"... you were right on it ;)
About the fist one... heh, I still look at it and think "wow, I did that!", even if the more I look at it now, the more mistakes I spot :p Being the first one I colorized, a lot of it was me guessing as I went... I basically laid down the midtones colors, and dodged and burned the shadows and the highlights. See the shoulderplates, for example? They were a medium gray, and they became all shiny thanks to the magic of photoshop. :-D

SJ: thank you very much! :)

Question: I don't have them on my laptop and my pc is out of commission for now (I'm hoping to rectify this soon!) but if anyone is interested I could post some screen grabs of the work in progress - I keep various copies of the drawings at various stages of developement, just in case of major screw-ups ;) What do you think? :hmm

Now, since the egg was a bit of a cop out ;) here's a new drawing: I made this one when I was very young, as you probably can see from the patches of grass and the tree :laugh The ears are not dragon-like because I copied this from a book I had with a story where this dragon was being teased because of his big floppy ears, so those of you that have seen a dragon and think that this one is unrealistic, this is my excuse! :P

Original drawing:

Colored version: (click for full size)

And a detail of the eyes, because I like how they turned out:

I hope you like it!
