Fucking Amal (Show me Love)

Postby urnofosiris » Sun Oct 05, 2003 2:00 am

This movie has been discussed in several threads, but it definitely deserves a thread of it's own. I recently watched it again on DVD and it made me want to talk about it some more. This is truly a great movie for every age to watch. For those of you who have not seen it I totally recommend it.

It's about a 16 year old girl, Agnes, who's living in a town called Amal. She has been living there for 2 years and she basically has no friends and has a hard time in school. She also happens to be in love with Elin, one of the most popular girls of her school.

If any of this threatens to sound like a teenage cliche movie, well, it's not. I think we all remember what high school could be like, or feel like, and if you don't, you will remember when you see this movie. I know a lot of Kittens are going through high school as we speak and I am sure a lot of you can recognize what Agnes is going through only too well. It isn't a depressing movie, but for Agnes things are starting to feel pretty hopeless and her seemingly hopeless unrequited love for Elin makes things all the more difficult to bear. Ah, I really remember those feelings. Even now, when I am a relatively old fart (32), this movie felt like home. It was fun remembering and recognizing myself in Agnes. The movie does a superb job at portraying teenage trials and tribulations, but it also does a very great job at portraying a positive gay story. It's definitely a must see, or a must see again.

I must check that out then. But with a title like "Fucking Amal" who wouldn't want to see it?

Choosing not to decide is still a choice.

Loved the movie. But I still don´t understand Elin. It seemed that at the end of the movie she still didn´t know what she really wants.

I searched far and wide and finally ebayed a copy of this movie. It instantly became my favorite (pushing The Princess Bride out of its decade long run). I have never seen any more accurate portrayal of what it feels like to be a teenager. The lead actresses are well beyond their years and I don't feel I am spoiling too much to say that NO ONE DIES and NO ONE TURNS EVIL. That is very important considering how few lesbian movies can boast that. Having said that, I don't consider this just a lesbian movie. This is a movie for anyone of any age (well maybe not toddlers cuz of language stuff, though it is still pretty mild in content). The ending of the film is the most original ending I've ever seen to a movie, though opinions on it are mixed as to whether it is needed or not. I like it a lot. I understant this was a huge hit in Sweden, which is nice. It deserved to be. Now I only wish I could find copys of Lijlah-4 Ever, Together, and In Bed With Santa so that I could see some more of the director's and actresses' works. Why do such few Swedish films make it over here?

Great film. Well written, well directed, well acted, beautifully presented. Though I did like Better Than Chocolate and But I'n a Cheerleader, this film leaves them all in the dust. A must see for anyone. Get a copy however you can.

PS You can find Russian all region copies of Bear's Kiss, with the lovely Rabecca Luljeberg on ebay and such. A nice film, but not nearly as good as Fucking Amal.

Well if either of them had died or turned evil I would not be plugging this movie, so heh, I don't think you are spoiling anything. :p

I loved the ending, a brilliant twist on coming out of the closet. :grin

I just saw this film last night and i thought it was really good. The girl who played Elin was awesome, she really stole the show. She had me cracking up in fits of laughter every five seconds. The banter between her and her sister was the main highlight for me.

The other girl who played Agnes really didn't do anything for me, unless thats how the role was supposed to be played. Anyway, she just like, seemed flat and uncomfortable in her performance. Well thats how it seemed to me.

I loved this movie. I remember xita telling me to watch this, and I was very happy that I did :grin

They made such a cute couple :blush

And as others have said, at the end, no dead or evil or insane lesbians...sweeet!

The end is about Elin knowing exactly what she wants, and getting it ;)

I think the thing that really touched me about this movie is the realistic portrayal of Agnes' crush on Elin.

I could really place myself in her shoes. The shy glances, doodling her name in all of her notebooks and well, um, that other thing that she did too. :blush

Fucking Amal is just one of my favourite movies ever!!!

@ xita

Elin said: "If you love me, then I do love you." This kinda told me, she isn´t really sure of her feelings. She feared that Agnes could reject her. And she would made a fool of herself.

(Maybe the translation of the movie was bad.)

But in the end I liked the movie. It shows perfectly how hard the life of a gay teenager could be.

Is the one from the distributor the unrated version? Cause I heard before the US version was cut for a very interesting reason. ;)

This movie was on BBC4 o couple of nights back, oddly enough the dropped the 'Fucking Amal' part. I thought the ending was sweet and Elin wasn't in any doubt about what she wanted, just afraid of saying it out loud in case it was all going to go horribly wrong. The way they literally 'came out' was quite amusing.

Tara: No, I understand you have to be with the person you l-love

Willow: I am

When this movie came it was like Titanic in Sweden.. almost. I mean it became everyone's favourite movie, and I mean everyone, mine too. I liked it a lot for years, but now that I've seen it again I've realized it's not so good.. I think it is kinda cliche.. and like.. this would never happen.. it's supposed to be all realistic.. and I don't think it is.. Well Fucking Åmål is fun to watch, not saying it's the worst movie ever or anything.. I just don't like it half as much as I did six years ago..

I finally saw this movie (rented it from Netflix). I have mixed feelings about it. I really wanted to like and feel for Agnes, but man, I was cringing each time she did something that seemed...ill-advised, as a kind way of saying it. I spent a decent portion of the movie groaning, "No, don't do that. Walk...away." Maybe it was painful to watch in parts because it was so raw. I do the same thing though no matter what the movie if I see someone about to do something potentially soul-crushing. :spin

One thing that struck me was the similarity between the ending of this film and that of The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love.

I've just caught it on cable, had seen it a few years ago, and for some reason I was convinced that it didn't end well for Elin and Agnes, so I was pleasantly surprised! LOL
What struck me though is how much "Elin" (don't know the actress' name) looks like Eliza Dushku :x
Anyway, it was nice seeing this again, even though I can't remember any swedish word :blush

I don't know, she has the same kind of features, she just reminded me of Eliza, but that's just my opinion ;)
