The Daily Show w/Jon Stewart

Postby Ben Varkentine » Tue Aug 03, 2004 12:33 am

Just wanted to give a heads up. It seemed like this show should have a thread anyway, but I particuarly wanted to recommend that Kittens keep an eye out for the ep that just aired.

In it, you will see a garden-variety homophobe making an absolute ass of himself in the time-honored "give 'em enough rope" fashion.

It'll be repeated at least three times between now and 11 PM tomorrow--check, as they say, local listings.

Yep, Ben, that has got to be one of the funniest interviews I have ever seen.:lmao

Imagine, being unable to play pool because of all the "lesbos" seducing all the hetero women with their "looks", their "creamy" skin, and especially their "double intendruations":lol ! Yet this clown is apparently a real candidate!!:wtf No wonder Jeb Bush got elected to the governorship of that state.

Which brings me to an important point about this wonderful show, which is soooooo much better since Jon Stewart took over from Kilborne. It's amazing to me that it's often "The Daily Show" which brings out important information on current events instead of the so-called "legit" news shows. For instance, it was TDS that first brought up the Cheney/Halliburton connection with the war in Iraq, and how Halliburton (and Bechtel, and various other heavy Republican contributors) got all the reconstruction contracts with no competitive bidding!!!!!:eek Seems that CBS/NBC/ABC/Fox didn't think that merited a lot of notice. We have come a long way now that the "fake" news shows have more journalistic integrity than the "real" news broadcasts:paranoid .

And ooh, some of the "real" news broadcasters are pissed about that. Check out this story about a "face off" between Stewart and Ted Koppel at the DNC:

slate.msn.com/id/2104473/

To me, it looks as though Koppel knows that what you say is true. And where you or I might respond by trying to make our show better (if we had a show, that is), he responds by attacking his critics.

I agree, and the show is much better now than when I started watching it with Jon Stewart. He certainly seems to have come into his own.

The Chicago Tribune ran a story on how TDS might actually have the best news reporting of the election out of all the news shows.

Here it is, www.chicagotribune.com/fe...7177.story

I love this show: last night Stewart ran a story about a speech given by Cheney where attendees were required to sign a loyalty oath--that's right, a loyalty oath:eek , in order to be allowed to be in the audience. But that's not all--the text of the oath read "I (insert name) herby[sic] swear that I favor the reelection of George W. Bush of the United States[sic].":lmao

It's like I recommended: the slogan of the Kerry campaign should be: "Vote for Kerry. Prove you have a brain."

To which I suppose I could add: "Or vote for Bush and prove that you're a drooling spastic knuckle-walking bubba moron".:rage

On Monday (8/9) night, TDS had ex-Pres. Bill Clinton as Jon Stewart's guest--not bad for a "fake" news show;) . Anyway, as always, what was of greatest interest was something he (Clinton) had to say. Some of you have probably seen ads trying to discredit Kerry's military service, all of them false. When Stewart asked Clinton why the Republicans were running such material, his reply was interesting: he stated that he once asked a Republican acquaintance of his why the Republicans resorted to such vicious dirty tricks, and the acquaintance replied, "Because without them, we'd lose".

Let's face it: what better demonstration could we have of how terrified the Republicans must be of Kerry if they would run ads like this.:rage

A question for any of you who watched this evening

How come none of you ever tell me what's wrong with my throw pillows?;)

Actually it's quite clever, it gets both sides talking about about Kerry's very solid military record rather than Bush's 'accidentally destroyed' one. The Republicans don't much care about the outcome of these ads so long as it keeps the press from making that comparison

Yes, Sheridan, that's what makes it so depressing...:(

It's worth noting that the Dukakis campaign never thought to question the military record of Bush Sr., so it's a little surprising that the Republican Sicherheitsdienst feels that it's OK for them to trash Kerry...:paranoid

Here follows a rant (those of you who don't like such things should turn away....;) )

It's time the Democrats stopped being nice and bring out their own "dirty tricks" squad. And I don't mean a "prankster" like Dick Tuck, but some real down and dirty operatives who would:

1. hammer away at all the excellent points made in "Fahrenheit 9/11"

2. emphasize the fact that the only real reason we went to war in Iraq was to fill the coffers of Halliburton, Bechtel, and all the other military contractors

3. point out that there is no reason to compare Kerry's and Dubya's military records, since Dubya doesn't have one:devilish

4. stop talking in code, and declare plainly that the agenda of the religious right in this country is to turn us into the "FSA" (Fundamentalist States of America"):eek

5. note that the economy is in ruins except for the big corporate interests that back Dubya

Oh sure, it's nice to take the "high ground" and be polite (remember Stevenson's "He who slings mud loses ground" quip?--except that he lost:( ), but if you want to win, you make the other guy lose...by any means necessary.

Ah but as Al Gore found out in the last election even a perefectly innocent and truthful remark will be converted into an 'outrageous lie' by the next day, Al Frankens' 'Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them' gives a nice summary of this. The news media(both sides of the atlantic) aren't interested in debate they are interested in shock, scandal, and disaster, even if they have to invent it. The problem for the Democrats is the gap between what the say and what gets reported.

Note: Mods, I wasn't completely sure if this is okay to post here, if not... feel free to remove it.

Just one more reason why I love this show. The transcript is too long to quote, so I'll link it instead. Scroll down to get to JS's interview.
