I had the pleasure of seeing this movie on Thurday night, and I am happy to report that it is absolutely on the same level of excellence as No.1!:applause

All of the original principal players are back and up to form (Meyers, Diaz and Murphy) together with some delightful and hilarious new additions (Antonio Banderas, John Cleese, Julie Andrews, Jennifer Saunders and, amazingly, Larry King!).

Whereas the original was a send-up of both fairytales and of Disneyland in particular (this shouldn't be surprising, since Jeffrey Katzenberg parted with Disney/Michael Eisner on very acrimonious terms:devilish ), this film aims its barbs at both Hollywood and "the Beverly Hills lifestyle". The name of the kingdom of Fiona's parents, Far Far Away, is displayed on a hill exactly like the Hollywood Sign! Commentary on the entrants to the royal ball (who arrive in "stretch carriages" instead of stretch limos;) ) is provided by none other than Joan Rivers:lol . The kingdom sports a chain of coffeeshops called "Farbucks":lol . And the list goes on and on...

I absolutely agree with AmberRocks that fully 60% of the jokes in this film are aimed at adults and will be utterly incomprehensible even to older children. I would say that about 20 different films are parodied in the course of the proceedings--everything from "Godzilla" to "Flashdance":lmao . And, like its predecessor, it concludes with a music/dance number (in this case "Livin' La Vida Loca" instead of "I'm A Believer").

All in all, this is a very enjoyable experience, and I highly recommend it to all.:)

This movie is killing at the box office.

From Yahoo...

'Shrek 2' Shakes Up Box Office with Record Opening

"Shrek 2," a cartoon revolving around a green ogre and his princess bride, trampled even the most optimistic forecasts as it set several new opening records at the weekend box office and kick-started the lucrative summer movie-going season into high gear.

The animated sequel sold about $125.3 million worth of tickets in its first five days of release across North America, its distributor, DreamWorks, said on Sunday.

If figures hold when final numbers are released on Monday, the total haul will set a new record for a Wednesday release, beating the $124.1 million earned by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" last December.

For the three days beginning Friday, the traditional start of the weekend box office, the film earned $104.3 million, making it the second-best opener behind "Spider-Man," which kicked off its run with $114.8 million in 2002.

"No one thought we could get above the mid-80s for the three days," said Jim Tharp, president of domestic theatrical distribution at DreamWorks.

Executives at the closely held studio had merely hoped to set a new record for an animated opening, beating the $70 million bow of "Finding Nemo" a year ago, he said.

Its Saturday haul of $44.8 million is the best for any single day, beating "Spider-Man's" first Saturday of $43.6 million. The three-day tally for "Shrek 2" also ranks as the best opening so far this year, ahead of "The Passion of the Christ," which debuted with $89.3 million in February. Additionally, the film opened in a record 4,163 theaters.

SHREK 3?

According to exit polls, more than 80 percent of moviegoers said they would definitely recommend the film, and more than 70 percent would see it again, Tharp said.

While a Wednesday opening tends to dilute weekend sales, Tharp said the positive word of mouth from the first two days actually boosted subsequent business.

As for another sequel, "Until today it was presumptuous to think about it," said Ann Daly, head of DreamWorks' animation division, "but let me tell you, we're thinking about it now."

The first "Shrek," released in May 2001, opened with $42.4 million in its first weekend, and went on to earn $267.7 million domestically.

"Shrek 2," which received its world premiere at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival, follows the title character (Mike Myers) as he and his new princess bride, Fiona (Cameron Diaz), visit her regal parents (John Cleese and Julie Andrews). It was directed by Andrew Adamson, who worked on the first one, along with Kelly Asbury and Conrad Vernon. The film was budgeted at between $70 million and $75 million, DreamWorks said.

Darcy and I saw it on Friday after I got off work. Perhaps that wasn't the wisest thing to do since I had to work a 12 hour shift on Sat. But ... IT was awesome. I was ok with the first Shrek, but 2 is much funnier. I think it's all because of Puss. At least it is for me. I'm definitely going a second time.

Oh, and if you haven't seen it ... do wait for the credits. HINT HINT nudge nudge say no more.

Ah oh nooo, I hate credits where something is to come and some ppl know it and sit all through the credits and we employees have to wait .. and wait .. and wait..

And finally they go and we have 5 mins left to clean the cinema.

Why oh why do the movie makers do this? I don't get it. It causes only trouble, because the viewers of the next show have to wait and argh..

..is it at least halfway funny so it's worth it?

I'd say it's more than halfway funny, and it's only about three minutes into the credits. After that, it's just straight credits until the blue screen.

I'm one of those who sits through all the credits. I guess I never thought about the employees who have to take care of the theater between showings. Oops.

If the movie itself was 5 or 10 minutes longer it would not be a problem, so neither should sitting to watch the credits for 5 minutes be, I think. Besides, the credits are part of a movie, I sometimes just like to sit there and let it all sink in instead of getting up and leaving right away. On the Dutch commercial TV channels they have this nasty habit of blasting you away with the channel´s commercial right after the last word in a movie is spoken. You immediately get yanked out of movie so to speak. As for the theatre employees, I think it would help more if people took care of their own mess, it is not that hard to not spill trash all over the floor and to just take it with you and throw it in the bin.

Hmm, getting of track I am and what am I doing here anyway. I´ve never even seen Shrek. I understand it was quite popular, but somehow it did not appeal to me. What am I missing by not seeing it?

I saw Shrek last weekend, twice! :blush

I loved it so much the first time I dragged my bro and his gf to see it the next day and I think I laughed even harder! Puss 'n Boots is so incredibly funny and you just want to eat him up when he does his sad kitten look.

Oh, oh and the scene in the carriage when Shrek, Fiona and Donkey are on their way to Far, Far Away and Donkey is bored and making popping sounds with his mouth :lmao That was SO my family on car trips!!!!

And the bit with Pinnochio.....:joss I won't say any more.

Just go see the movie, alright!

I tried to watch Shrek yesterday, but I was so sleepy I actually fell asleep. It did not help that he grossed me out so much in the first two minutes. Having him take a dump, a scuzzbath and farting in the water did not really make me go "awww". Not that I am catagorically opposed to poopy humor, I just could not stand it last night. I woke up just in time to see the ending. That seemed sort of ok. If it gets aired again, I´ll watch it for real, *if* I am awake and in a good mood that is.

The Fairy Godmother was voiced by Jennifer Saunders of AbFab fame (as well as French and Saunders).

I loved Shrek 1 and Shrek 2 was even more fun ('are we there yet? are we there yet?). It was entertaining, and generally all good fun.

But of course, someone has to get their panties in a twist over it.

Coalition: 'Shrek' wrecks family values

Quote:

Coalition: 'Shrek' wrecks family values

MIKE ARGENTO

Monday, June 7, 2004

Some people see "Shrek 2" as harmless family entertainment, a film that kids from 8 to 80 can enjoy.

Others, though, see it as part of an effort that, one day, will lead not only to gay marriage, but marriage between people of the same sex who were once the opposite sex, or something like that.

And, if that's not bad enough, Larry King is involved, sort of.

Something called the Traditional Values Coalition has issued a parental advisory about "Shrek 2," claiming the movie furthers what it calls "the transgender agenda," an "effort to deconstruct the biological reality of male and female."

And here you thought it was just a nice, little cartoon.

The coalition's advisory says, "Parents who are thinking about taking their children to see 'Shrek 2,' may wish to consider the following: The movie features a male-to-female transgender (in transition) as an evil bartender. The character has five o'clock shadow, wears a dress and has female breasts. It is clear that he is a she-male. His voice is that of talk show host Larry King."

Larry King?

Is the Traditional Values Coalition suggesting that Larry King has something to do with "the transgender agenda," whatever that is? Does Larry King promote sex change surgery? Was Larry King once a woman? (If he had been, you can't blame him for having a sex-change operation. He'd have been one nasty looking woman.)

The bartender is only the beginning. The warning continues: "During a dance scene at the end of the movie, this transgendered man expresses sexual desire for Prince Charming, jumps on him, and both tumble to the floor."

Prince Charming in the clutches of Larry King?

And then, the warning says, "In another scene in the movie, Shrek and Donkey need to be rescued from a dungeon where they are chained against the wall."

An ogre and a donkey chained to a wall? Doesn't U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Man-on-Dog, have dreams like that?

The warning continues: "The rescue is conducted by Pinocchio who is asked to lie so his nose will grow long enough for one of the smaller cartoon characters to use it as a bridge to reach Shrek and Donkey. Donkey encourages him to lie about something and suggests he lie about wearing women's underwear. When he denies wearing women's underwear, his nose begins to grow."

The conclusion: Pinocchio is a transvestite.

There's even more cross-dressing. The warning says, "An earlier scene in the movie features a wolf dressed in grandma's clothing and reading a book when Prince Charming encounters him. Later, one of the characters refers to the wolf's gender confusion."

A transvestite wolf?

This has to be some kind of joke. I mean, Larry King?

So I called Frank York, the editorial director for the Traditional Values Coalition, and asked him: "Are you serious?"

"Yes," he said. "Yes, I am."

He said, "What they showed in the film was supposed to be humorous, but if you look at the transgender agenda ... there are more serious things going on here."

Like men dressed as women using women's bathrooms, he said.

And other stuff like that.

York discussed the "transgender agenda" at length and I'm still not sure what he meant. He did say something about two male-to-female transgender people who tried to get married in Kansas. I must have been out getting popcorn during that scene.

He also suggested that I do a Web search for "she males." He said, "You'll see things that'll make your hair curl."

I told him I didn't think my bosses would appreciate me checking out she-male sites here in the office.

He's deadly serious. He doesn't think there's anything humorous at all about a bartender with a five o'clock shadow, wearing a dress, with breasts and the voice of Larry King.

By the way, what's Larry King have to do with it?

"That's just a detail I put in there," he said.

So Larry King doesn't have anything to do with this?

"No, not at all," he said.

I wanted to ask him about the whole interspecies marriage thing, you know, Shrek being an ogre and the princess being, well, a princess who became an ogre. (Or maybe she was an ogre and became a princess. I don't know.)

Anyway, he talked about the whole transsexual agenda and how it wants to take over the world and stuff like that. He clearly spends a lot of time thinking about transsexuals, not that there's anything wrong with that. Meanwhile, I was praying to the telephone gods to strike the phone line dead.

Finally, he said, "I know you probably think I'm insane."

No, no, no, no.

Probably?

Ok movie is out this weekend here in the Uk and I just saw it today. Very, very, funny, with gags for both young and old. Lots of clever little jokes that only the grownups will get and lots of slapstick everyone will get. The article above is the classic example of taking things out of context and twisting them around to fit an argument. What's next? Some visually impaired action group complaining about the portrayal of the three blind mice?

Okay, first off, how did that film get a "U" certificate? A lot of the jokes and comments are very near the knuckle.

I thought the first was funnier but the second one I think is better in terms of plot and character. Rather than take the easy option and replay the first they expanded on it, which is a good thing. Antonio Benderas was brilliant as Puss in Boots and the whole cast were really into their roles. Larry King as the Ugly Stepsister was just inspired and he seemed to revel in what was a cameo.

All in all, a great second film and I hope they get the chance to do the other two parts that they are planning on.
