Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let all Australian kitties know that Tipping The Velvet is being released on DVD here on 13th June, according to Ezy DVD

Edited to add: it will also be shown on ABC sometime in June.

Having seen first two parts . . .

Postby Gatito Grande » Sat May 24, 2003 11:44 pm

. . . and having read through this whole thread now: boy is the version we Yanks are getting edited to hell or what??? :miff

We've only heard them say the word "dildo" once, and we certainly haven't seen one! They go to Diana's "pleasure chest" and we get reaction shots, or we see gold-painted "Hermaprodite" from the waist up. No strap-ons for the virginal Americans!

I want to know how much more we're losing, cuz I have to say that the sex has been pretty tame (I certainly haven't seen anything as hot as the final 12.5 seconds of Entropy!)

Other than what we're missing, I'm enjoying it. Rachel Stirling is splendid (and enchantingly sexy). And no one has pointed out what I thought was obvious: that Keeley Hawes looks (and even sounds, a little) a heck of a lot like a young Julie Andrews! (I half expected Nan to catch Kitty in bed w/ Baron Von Trapp ;) )

Haven't seen much of Jodhi May yet, but I am very much looking forward to part three. It's funny, I saw Daniel Deronda when it was shown on PBS a couple of months ago, and almost brought it up on the TV thread: I found it tremendously well-done and very thought-provoking. Little did I know that it had come up on this thread!

Jodhi May is just so interesting-looking . . . she certainly makes any production she's in "Must See". (Am really intrigued by this "Sister My Sister!")

It's too bad that Flo's character has been changed so much from book to (small)screen. However, considering how much we Yanks would lose anyway, I'm not sure it matters . . .

GG Go BBC, it's your birthday! Out

well the news thats its been edited to bits does not surprise me ... i am still enjoying it though.

actually seeing the whole thing (even edited as it is) was worth it just for the look nan gives in part 2 when she is dressed as a soldier and a man asks for a hand job and he will pay ... she considers the offer for about 2 seconds and the look on her face is absolutely priceless ...:clap

Oh you know, I must admit to being a sucker for women in drag. So my lesbian heart was all too happy watching this because of it. I think nan looked much better in drag.

We've really enjoyed it so far, though we are annoyed at the gratuitous editing. I hope the DVD is released here soon.

I saw the new issue of Curve magazine today, and they have an article on 'Tipping the Velvet'.

edit Edited - I was wrong on my initial post, the article is in Curve and not in Girlfriends. Apologies for any confusion.

Tipping the Velvet in Australia

Postby Minnie Mone » Wed Jun 04, 2003 11:06 pm

Just letting the Aussie kittens know that the ABC is showing Tipping the Velvet commencing Wednesday 11th of June. Also, Out Video in Melbourne has advertised the release of the Video/DVD for June 6th. The video is $24.95 and the DVD is $29.95.

Seeing as I've just finished the book, I'm very much looking forward to seeing the series. I really hope they stay true to the characters and the story!!!

Yep the cuts in the american version were obvious especially the way they blanked the "bad" words. Yep it was also obvious that the they cut out any view of the dildo. Still I enjoyed the series. I taped all 3 eps before watching and watched the last couple of minutes before committing I wasn't in the mood to see any tragic love story ala Romeo and Juliet.

I like all the actresses including Johdi May who I've liked since "Last of the Mohicans". I like the bit after Nan breaks up with Kitty where she thinks about ending it all but then decides she won't give Kate the satisfation. Now that turns a cliche on it's head. I was all "you go girl"! Worth a look despite the hatchet job by American TV. I hope the DVD comes out uncut.

tommo: ""It'll be interesting to know if Australia makes cuts like BBCAmerica did.""

I'd doubt that Australia would be getting the edited version 'cause if it's on SBS it's rare that *anything* is ever edited/cut.

Well here's :pray

KISMIC, it is actually on the ABC, and while not as raunchy as SBS, they do like to be controversial at times. Also, the fact that Tipping the Velvet is on has gotten a lot of publicity in TV Guides and Newspapers around Australia means raising it's profile a little. I hope that they would not cut anything out!

Having said that, I watched the first part last night. It was very well done, but having just only finished the book, I have to say I prefer the book thus far. The build up of the relationship between Kitty and Nan, and the foreboding betrayal got me much more involved in the book. But then again, if they did everything on screen how it was in the book, it would turn into a 30 hour series rather than a 3 hour one. I can't wait to see the rest. Anna Chancellor as Diana will be amazing!

Death through lack of good lesbian literature

Coming out of lurkdom to proclaim that I may actually die if I can't find a book as fantabulous as Tipping the V soon. Dieing here! :cry

Although Sarah Waters may be a great author I don't think her other 2 books come as close to perfection as Tipping the V. Need... more... soon... please!

T.T.V.

Postby KISMIC » Fri Jun 13, 2003 6:38 am

Well I watched the first part and...I have to say I was...Disappointed! I read the book months ago and it was just so brilliant, I don't think that the movie can live up to that for me. But dammit if the actress that plays Nan (Rachel Stirling I believe) isn't just gorgeous as Nan. My one problem with her though? Her voice seems much too deep for 'Nan' for me.

Oh well, can't wait to see the next part, if only to see which parts are left out and how it's shown on screen!

Hey All,

I watched Julia Roberts in "Sleeping With the Enemy" today for about the hundreth time. I never realized that the name that the character takes after she leaves her husband is Sarah Waters. And she works in a library. Think there's some connection there?

I sent an email to BBC America about the cuts made to the show. This is what I got back from them:
Quote:
Thank you for your interest in BBC America. When it comes to matters of content and language we are feeling our way in an unfamiliar market and fine judgements have to be made. Sensitivities here are different from those in Europe - and while guarding the integrity of our programming we

do not want to offend viewers. Feedback like yours is extremely valuable in informing this process as the channel moves forward, so thank you for taking the trouble to write to us.

BBC America
So basically a form letter. "Sensitivities" or homophobia? Too bad. "Tipping The Velvet Thread" was the first thing I watched on BBC America and I don't think that I will repeat the experiance for another British series with "sensitive" content. I'd rather rent or buy the DVD and see it uncut. I don't consider them to be "guarding the integrity of our programming" but that's just me.

MI-5 (aka Spooks)

Postby tyche » Wed Jul 23, 2003 2:15 pm

For anyone who gets A&E and would like to see Keeley Hawes in a different role, they're showing 'MI-5' (British title: Spooks) on Tuesdays (starting yesterday), and repeating it on Saturdays.

Fingersmith

BBC2 opts for more lesbian romance

Exclusive by Jonathan Donald

BBC2 is to risk fresh controversy by dramatising another novel by the author of lesbian drama Tipping The Velvet.

The channel has green-lighted an adaptation of Sarah Water's third book, the best-selling Fingersmith.

Set amid the world of Victorian pick-pockets, it once again involves a romance between two women.

Producer Sally Head told TV Plus: "It won't be so contoversial because the lesbian side is more repressed."

The drama — to begin production in the autumn and likely to air next year — is about an orphaned girl who is recruited by a conman to become part of a plot to defraud a young wealthy heiress. Romance blossoms between the two.

No-one has yet been cast for the project being adapted by Peter Ransley.

Sally Head, behind both productions, was horrified by the furore over the lesbian scenes in Tipping The Velvet.

"That hoo-ha nearly sunk us," she said. "It did bring a bigger audience but some people expected titilation and turned off after half an hour.

"It was really a love story, and that's how it should be remembered."

These days it's best to be spoiled. I'm not interested in seeing any tragic lesbians nowadays. In fact, I taped "Tipping the Velvet" and watched the end before comitting to watching the series. I prolly won't get a chance to watch "Fingersmith" in any case. In the states, it will prolly only come to BBC America and heavily editted like "Tipping the Velvet". If reviews here are good and it comes out on DVD uncut, I'll give it a whorl.

I'm really happy about Fingersmith.

They worded that "repressed" thing very badly. I'd say it's a fair bit more subtle than TTV.

I certainly do (and have, many times!) recommend the book to kitties. I loved it. It's quite dark, but it's worth it.

It'll be fascinating to see how they film it.

Editing because I've just happily channel-surfed to MI-5. Keeley Hawes is oh so yummy. And our nice ASH seems to be guest-starring as a baddie. Also yummy!

I agree about Fingersmith. TTV is a great romp, but Fingersmith is just amazing. I shouldn't really say anything about Affinity.... I guess I can say that it was well-written.

Might be time for me to go combing the net for Fingersmith movie news!
