Non-cliche lesbian characters

Salem Witch Trials, koala bears, SpongeBob: what's on TV and at the movies!

The Lesbian Cliche FAQ continues to add examples while we are in repeat mode here. It doesn't surpise me that the number of cliches outnumbers the non-cliches but it does sadden me.

sam7777: Cheer up. I'm sure there are plenty of others that just haven't been mentioned yet. In the meantime, how about discussing some of the characters already mentioned? Which do you like most, what are they like, etc

Just remembered; I saw an episode of Kate and Allie some time ago. I can't remember her name, but their landlady was a non-cliche lesbian (I think her lover was named Miriam.)

Sorry to double post.

I've just read the novel, 'Alien v.s. Predator: Prey.' It features a lesbian couple, Jame Roth and Cathie Dowes. They only have a small part, but neither one dies, goes insane etc.

If only they could be in the film.

It would be great to see some more prominent lesbian couple that last. Sure there are bit parts and background characters that don't turn evil or die but I would also like to have more major characters that do the same. With bit parts, I can't help but think that if they had more time, they would be taken down.

That saif I agree that it would be great to discuss the few that we have found. I though that Kotz and Roswitha from "Salmonberries" were pretty original in that neither looks like a fashion model. Kotz was certainly not "lipstick" lesbian. I liked that.

Yeah, I agree that it's a shame we can't have more major characters. Still, I think that even supporting characters can be good and should not be ignored. I've never seen 'Salmonberries' myself, I'll have to keep an eye open.

One of my favourites, whom I mentioned in my first post, is Jen and Amy from the Tru Calling episode 'Star-crossed'. Rachael Bella (Jen) I just adore. She's a really good actress and is really beautiful. Melissa Lee (Amy) is also good, although I haven't seen her in anything else.

Both of them do a great job in this episode. Their scenes together are very sweet and romantic, especially the scene where Amy gives Jen the necklace.

Another good thing is that the episode reverses cliche in a sense, since the truth about Jen and Amy's relationship is what prevents senseless deaths rather than causing them.

For more details, see the Tru Calling thread.
