in other news my mother wouldn't lend me some money so i haven't got TtV on DVD yet *grumble* apparantly i have an "unhealthy obesession" ;)

Postby Sarah Bennett » Thu Oct 31, 2002 6:07 pm

Sister My Sister was one very....disturbing film. It's based on a true story about two sisters, living in the early 1900s (I think), and working as resident housemaids for a cruel, dominating woman and her horrible daughter.

The ending is incredibly shocking. Throughout the story, the two sisters are basically driven insane from fear of the woman they work for - fear of doing the wrong thing, as she is so strict about the way she wants her house cleaned and maintained.

They plan to escape, but are fearful of even doing that. And they do turn to each other for comfort, which leads to love and sex... but even though it's incest, it's practically the most comforting part of the movie. But don't expect a happy ending :( Far, far from it....I cried at the end, and the shock of what happened really stayed with me afterward. It's nothing if not a memorable movie.

Sarah.

Many people don't remember Jodhi in A World Apart. Kind of sad. Jodhi was a brilliant child actress. She was the youngest Cannes award winner.

I remember when it came out, I decided not to watch it though cause it looked quite disturbing and it was not long since I'd seen Concrete Garden (deals with incest) possibly the most bleak and disturbing film I've ever seen! Sister my Sister had good reviews though didn't it?

Oh my friggin' goddesses... Hyo Shin, you're meaning to tell me Molly in "A world apart" was actually played by Jodhi !!! I can't believe it: why have I never noticed that before ! I luv that movie ! Ok, at times it's incredibly sad, and I'm bawling my eyes out, but there are so many different emotions: grief, anger,..., so many issues: Apartheid, mother/daughter relationship: you smile, you cry... And that music by Hans Zimmer: there's this musical sequence that just gives me goose bumps every time.

It's one of the films I saw in class when I was still in highschool. Come to think of it, they showed "Last of the Mohicans" then too. Jodhi-obsession: heh :) Both films I definitely wanted to see again. Think I taped "A world apart" from tv but I'm not sure the quality's that good (blasted stripes, shattered sound...:( )

"It's all connected." I've once read "Sister, my Sister" was some kind of gay flick. On this board they said Jodhi May was gonna be in "Tipping the velvet" and referred to her as playing the sister in "Last of the Mohicans", later I found out for myself she's in "Sister, my Sister" too: convinced me to buy the tape. You're right: very disturbing movie, but the acting's prize worthy indeed.

Some of my friends must really think I'm a freak (which I am), being astounded with my movie trivia knowledge, connecting actors with several films, sometimes the most unknown names, flicks... Thanks for opening my eyes, Hyo. Glad I'm not alone in laying links like that.

More shopping spree results: bought Sarah Waters' novel "Tipping the Velvet" yesterday, which was an absolutely stupid move of me to make, since I have to read Saul Bellow's "Humboldt's Gift" for university, and I just know I'll have all the trouble of the world restraining me from reading TTV. Argh ! Read up till she first sees Kitty and wants to go see her again. Magnificent descriptions: detailed but not too much, understandable for a non-native speaker like me. :) Has a different cover than the one portrayed on tv (publicity for novel, VHS, DVD), so no pic of Nan and Kitty for me (bummed me out a lil). Instead there's this black background, with a round spotlight on some brown wooden boards with two pink shoes with heels lying on it... Pink I get, but shoes ? I'm not even referring to "Red shoes diaries". Anyway, TTV, the title's also in pink, and the back of the book in pink has this small pic of a lilac oyster on it. That ref. I did understand. :)

THANK YOU! the photos are spectacular, all of them. I want to see all the jodhi stuff! i'm so lame.

i cant wait to see this film. the only thing i'm kinda hesitant about is that i've heard flo is quite the innocent she kinda really isn't in the book (esp. the tipping the velvet dialogue) and that their love wont transfer the same way on screen. i've read elsewhere how flo and nan were not as deeply in love as nan and kitty and blah blah blah and i was like did you read the book? the part where nan describes being an 18 year old all over again lusting after flo? it may not have been her first love but it was love nonetheless. it was a brand new start and i'm so glad she chose flo. I was a bit afraid when they'd said they tinkered with the ending...

anyhoo... thanks for all the clips and all the photos (esp the one with flo, nana and cyril) and just everything you all have said and done for us unfortunate colonists!

Rane, I assure you that it does, until Nan moved in with Flo I was hoping she would get back together with Kitty, but in the brief time they had to do it (I still say it should have been a 6 parter instead of a 3 :p ) they really showed the difference between a first love and true love. :heart

concrete Thank you so much for those screencaps.

rane018 I hope my earlier rant about the changes to Flo's character haven't put you off seeing the TV show. The show is great and although their Flo is different in some ways to the book she is still delightful and the relationship between her and Nan is portrayed in a very tender, romantic and loving way, as Dr G says it really comes over as true love.

There are a number of changes to the book but on the whole they work very well without losing sight of the essential storyline or the core relationships and emotions in the novel. It works dramatically and on it's own terms rather than being one of those slavish literary adaptations which somehow falls flat on screen. Plus you get to see the music hall numbers, the period costumes and drag, the nakedness, the sex and some excellent and absolutely gorgeous actresses......

Tipping the Velvet the show is different to Tipping the Velvet the book but both are yummy treats!

Oh Garfield, you smooshie you. That's exactly what I thought about Flo and Nan. Kitty was her first love; Flo is her true love. And it's a testament to the actresses that they showed that, all three of them, so amazingly well.

I’m on a roll so after watching this precious DVD for the umpteenth time, I just had to add some more pictures. Not many but ‘publish-worthy’ enough. These are Some Scary Ladies ! And I could swear that it was Flo & her mother in the second shot in the background. Even in slow-motion it was hard to see but I’m pretty sure. I guess Ms.May was in costume and might as well be used as sort of an extra :)

Edited to add this: it's the girl on the right. A tad clearer perhaps...
