Re: i've watched the for three years too

Postby rocketdyke » Tue Apr 09, 2002 11:01 am

yeah xita i was thinking that too... im not disappointed about anything about the show except that its ending... it was always the kind of show that you never really knew from episode to episode which character was going to get the focus of the story that week. i liked that. it was like you were always watching a different show, getting a totally different story every time, yet they always blended together so well, because of the way the cast was featured as a group. one of the episodes i particularly enjoyed was the one which focussed on jessie's mom (forgot her name) and her car accident... aside from the show, it made me think about parents and being a grown up with teenagers and how within a family it is so easy for the kids that age to forget about their parents' struggles and insecurities and the things that people continue to go through even as they are trying to raise almost adult children.

anyway, the romance with jessie and katie is very sweet and im glad its been given attention, but with the way this show has been throughout its time on the air, it would have been weird to give it too much focus than they have... and i also wouldnt expect any big tie up of loose ends, partly because of how the story has always been kind of disjointed and moves from character to character, and partly because they probably didnt expect to have to tie up in the middle of their season...

anyway, ill be sad to see it go, but i dont really have any complaints about how things have been dealt with.

Not any mention of Jessie&Katie, but extreme praise for the show from those folks over at ew.com. Nothing really spoilery, just a note about the final show:

''Once and Again'' is going to go out with a terrific episode that'll tie up lots of loose ends, open up utterly unexpected plot turns, and conclude with the cast talking directly to the audience about how the series has affected them. I've seen the episode, but won't give anything away to those of the faithful among you; you won't be disappointed but you may cry a little."

This really sucks!

I feel all conflicted because I thought yesterday's episode was great but I agree with everyone else in saying that it was COMPLETELY unecessary to have the main focus of the second to the LAST episode on such secondary characters! I mean we could have totally not heard from or about Bee again and the audience would not have thought anything of it. Even if the episode wasn't focused on Jessie and Katie they should have focused it on Grace or Eli or Rick and Lily.

And theres only ONE episode left! AHH! I have such conflicted feelings about that too! its like a double edged sword because I'm really looking forward to seeing the last ep but then I remember that its the LAST episode! And then I feel like I'm going to cry.

And Gloryp3mrs my quote was from the episode Tough Love. Jessie is talking with Katie about Sarah and how she confronted her and made her seem like it was some sort of contest. Like if she's friends with her she can't be friends with Sarah and Jessie says that "this isn't how I am". Then Katie just blurts out "I choose you". Jessie's kinda taken aback and says she doesn't want anybody to choose anybody and Katie says that she can't help it. Katie then holds out her hand to Jessie which she takes. Its a REALLY cute scene.

Katie and Jessie

Postby aladdin » Tue Apr 09, 2002 9:12 pm

Well, of course I was a little disappointed by the short appearance of K&J but on the other hand, my grandmother has Alzheimer's for a couple of years now and I'm glad this topic is talked about on the show. This means a lot to people who have family member who have to go through this.

And let's see the positive side: in my mind (if you want to go there) and timeline, Katie slept over at Jessie's before they were going to her Mom's. What else would she do there at that time of the day? OK, there are a ton of things but I don't wanna hear them.

I don't want them to hit sheets right now (unrealistic! And too rushed) but it' still sweet and shows that they are in love and in addition to that, still best friends. Who smooch. Heh.

Sure, I'm sad that O&A is cancelled an I'm depressed that this Buffy season turned out to be a crappy one but let's just appreciate what we have (I missed the early Katie episodes and I'll wait and look forward to it, until German TV shows reruns. I'll find a way to watch them.) and use our imagination! I'm grateful for Mischa (who was so utterly convincing in Lost and Delirious) and Evan and how they made this relationship the most touching and appealing one in years. When the season ends, this will be the only real and romantical teen relationship on the show since Eli is a pothead and Grace turned into Lolita.

Jessie and Katie are having a loving relationship, they're in love. Hey. Who would have thought that at first? Isn't that great? And it's treated like every other one on Once and Again and this is even greater.

I'll miss it but there will be something else, and we always have our own lives to make dreams come true, don't we?

I meant the most touching relationship in years on Once and Again. Cuz there's always Will and Tara.

Once and Again

Postby linuxhead » Tue Apr 09, 2002 10:31 pm

Coming out of deep lurkdom to post this. I'm feeling pretty ticked off at the relative lack of power we viewers have regarding the type and quality of programming the networks are offering us. As many of you know, "Once and Again" has been cancelled despite the efforts of its dedicated fans. The same thing happened to My So Called Life, as well as countless other quality shows that step too far from the standard network cookie cutter sitcom, cop show, lawyer drama or reality show. I have no doubt that if Buffy were on ABC, CBS or NBC, it would no longer be on the air.

I started thinking about the Kitten board, as well as the Chalupa board and the various other fan sites that have popped up on the internet. Each of those "communities" seems to exist fairly isolated from the other communities. What would happen if we started to work in coalition with eachother? When one show has an issue that needs a public outcry, the dedicated fans of other shows can join in and lend support. I'm probably thinking crazy, but it seems to me that as viewers, our one ace is our numbers. And ultimately, the networks need us desperately. But they've grown arrogant in their belief that they know what's best for us. We need to remind them that television is nothing without the viewers.

Any thoughts? How could coalitions be built between fan based communities? Am I just crazy?

Well, speaking from a personal point of view, I would have to read endless threads and posts about shows and characters in which I have no interest whatsoever.

Sorry, but the reason I like this Willow and Tara board is because it's a Willow and Tara board. It's about Willow and Tara. It's not about anyone else. That's why I visit this Willow and Tara board regularly and don't go to Once and Again boards or the Chalupa.

clarification

Postby linuxhead » Tue Apr 09, 2002 11:38 pm

Perhaps I should clarify my original post. I'm not proposing that the various fandoms combine into one homogenized "TV is great!" group. I think the focus and intensity of the Kitten board is fantastic. And it made sense to me when the Chalupa board needed to make a split from the Kitten board. Yes, the various shows need their specific, dedicated groups that adore the show and dissect it to the nth degree.

It's that very energy that I'm proposing we tap into, but certainly not in a way that siphons off energy from the original focus of the fan group. But my thought is that by segregating ourselves into "my show" and "your show" groups, we dilute our collective viewer power, and thus we offer our power up to the networks.

So again, my question...do you see any avenue for the various fan groups to work in coalition and harness the power of our numbers to effect real change in programming decisions?

Re: clarification

Postby Judy » Tue Apr 09, 2002 11:57 pm

Shellybean and others: I suspect that the Once and Again producers and writers didn't know that this would be their last season when they wrote and shot it. I think they were setting up a storyline for next season with this episode focused on Bee. This is pure speculating, but when I saw the episode it signaled "big storyline and struggle for Lily next year." What would it be like to have Bee in her care? Plus, everything xita said... although I share your frustration and sorrow!

linuxhead, It would be great if queer TV viewers harnessed our collective and formidable powers for the greater good. I like the idea of having a site/board that is not necessarily about watching and discussing and drooling over our favorite queers on various TV shows, but about being a watchdog collective. Mass support for shows when they get it and mass outrage when they fuck up. Of course, there's GLAAAD, but something more grassroots and fan based feels inspiring. However, it would be a lot of work and I am not sure that any of the webmasters/mistresses or board owners have the energy for such an ambitious project. Was this something you wanted to spearhead? Maybe you could start with an email list that sends out alerts and bulletins. But, if you want to discuss this further it's best to move it to an OT thread, I think.

EDITED TO ADD:

Plus, as xita noted, I wonder about the effectiveness of letter writing campaigns. It seems like I have only heard them working when it comes to saving a show from cancellation.

I have to say I'm disapointed that with only two episodes left the wasted a whole episode about Lilly's mom, I mean its sad that she has Alzheimer's but its not really important that they cover this topic when there are only two left. And Mischa was only in one scene for like 10 seconds. How can they even count that as a guest star appearence?

I just hope the next episode makes up for it (not holdong my breath) and that Lifetime picks it up for at least a few more episodes.

Jessie and Kate are so cute together.

Hopefully, if they're tying up loose ends and all that for the last episode, then they'll somehow tie up the katie/jessie relationship -- have her mom find out, or have grace talk about it with her or something.

i have an unrelated to katie/jessie question. could anyone who's been watching give me a quick recap on what they've done with the eli as a pothead storyline. (I'm in Korea and we don't get once and again here). Is it being stereotypical pothead smokes all day and doesn't do work and eats a lot and lays around and does nothing? As a proud pothead who smoked all through college and graduated with a 3.7 gpa and got into Harvard divinity school, I'm always interested in portrayals of marijuana smoking on tv shows and in movies. thanks :D

La- I haven't see too much of the back story of Eli, but lately it does kinda seem like he is portrayed as a slightly sterotypical pothead. Until the last episodes, he couldn't keep a job, he's not in school, he is losing the trust of his parents. I think more of the thing is about Eli just being lost, haveing no idea what to do with his life, and feeling like he's a huge disapointment to everyone. I could be wrong, but it does seem that he's portrayed with kinda low self-esteem and a very lost guy. The pot is just something he does to escape. Again, I only recently started watching the show, so i could be off, feel free to correct me:)

I think they were trying to go with the whole reality hit Eli hard bit and that he couldn't really handle it or something. Because he was like awesome basketball player and everything and a good kid or whatever, but then after he graduates its like he loses focus and it all goes down hill. Which I think is pretty damn realistic and again makes me feel like KILLING ABC for cancelling such an awesome show!!!

Postby Hugin » Thu Apr 11, 2002 10:03 am

I think one of the big problems is, it's easy to be really passionate about what you're really passionate about. Willow and Tara fans fighting for Willow and Tara is one thing. What happens when you try to get Willow and Tara fans to fight passionately for Kerry and Sandy? Who they may not even know about, much less care about. Or worse, actively dislike. Heck, in every fandom I can think of, groups who theoretically all are in the same fan category don't get along so well, the ER boards don't. The Buffy boards don't. The W/T oriented Buffy boards don't. Etc.

It's hard to get that kind of energy out of people in any movement, the faction fighting can get so ugly and draining. And eventually, I suspect a lot of folks will just throw up thier hands and say "It's just a friggin TV show, and not one I even watch! I'm going home."

Oh my god, for some reason for like a split second I thought Evanrachelwood was the real Evan Rachel Wood. I don't know what made me think that though. And is there a reason that the heading to your message says "shelly...must tape it"? Interesting.

And the JessieKatie yahoo group really is an excellent group and apparently has a lot of people around the age of 13 on the group. I haven't graduated yet but I feel all old in that group. Like Rane said there are more people there and its a great community to talk about all things Jessie/Katie related. plus is has some great fanfic too!

Idea to Save the Show

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know if this thing is real or really affiliated with ABC but I got it off the JessieKatie yahoogroup so take a look and for god's sake even if it isn't real, just try it anyway! I'm going to go buy a dozen postcards and send them out, everyone please do the same!

The real ratings

Marc's ingenious idea:

ABC makes this announcement: "Okay, you Once And Again

fans, we are going to need your help in a unique test

this Monday. Get some paper and a pen handy."

Then go back to other commercials. Later, "Once And

Again fans, write down this address. ABC, Inc. 500 S.

Buena Vista Street, Burbank, Ca 91521. ABC is going

to test the validity of the Neilsen numbers versus

your participation. We need you to send us a letter or

postcard, for each viewer in your household, after

you watch the show this Monday. Mark your post as

NEILSEN TEST. Tell your friends and family that watch

the show, so they can be counted too. Now is your

chance to prove your case. If you are a loyal fan,

send in your name, and let's see how many are truly

watching."

Woops, double posted. My bad.

Hey everyone, this was posted on the Drudge Report. It looks like there might just be a chance for Once and Again. If it's possible to send a letter or call ABC, I would definitely do it now! Anyway, here's the post.

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN APRIL 14 2002 15:41:22 ET XXXXX

'CANCELED' SERIES 'ONCE AND AGAIN' SET STAYS UP, ACTORS NOT RELEASED; SELA WARD FAINTS DURING PRODUCTION OF FINALE

**Exclusive**

LOS ANGELES -- The set of the "canceled" DISNEYABC series ONCE AND AGAIN has not been destroyed, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, just as lead actors of the drama have been told they cannot pursue other projects.

The developments raise a possibility that ABC has not completely ruled out bringing back the program.

"The new pilots for Fall are coming in horribly weak," whispers a top network source in Burbank. "All options may need to be considered. It's going to be a scramble."

[Despite being moved into seven different time slots over its three year run, ONCE AND AGAIN pulled in more viewers last week than DISNEYABC's renewed DREW CAREY. ABC sets its new schedule in mid-May.]
