UK Soaps Cliche

Postby EffieBlue » Fri Jun 04, 2004 6:23 pm

I wasn't sure where to post this really.

Did it come under TV shows and belong in geniune moulded plastic or does this get covered by The Cliche?

Some of you may be aware of the UK Soap Emmerdale, and the fact that there has been a lesbian character in Emmerdale for years.

Zoe Tate as the character is called has been run through a whole spectrum of emotions and experiences. She's come out, she's been raped, she married .. and left her girl friend (on the same day) she's killed her half brother and she's gone mad. During her schizophrenic episode, she slept with a man and burnt down a church. Then when she was pregnant from her man sleeping moment of madness she thought she had a demon inside her.

She gave birth and had a little girl which she was going to put up for adoption she then found out who the father was and there was a brief custody experience ..but this was resolved with money and poor plot.

Everything seemed to settle down. Then her disabled brother killed himself framing his ex prostitute wife (who also had an affair with Zoe) and although she was aquitted..(again poor plot and money) she gave up her child to Zoe. As the brother had a child already, this now left Zoe with 3 kids.

And of course by this time she was very sad.. everyone around her had a partner.. she didin't.

I mistakenly thought there was nothing else they could do to this poor woman. HOW WRONG COULD I BE.

THEY CURED HER OF HER LESBIANISM!!

she finally realised that the one person who she should be with was a man.. (she came to this realisation when her ex wife..who previously had wanted nothing to do with her turned up with a new "life Partner") thus showing Zoe she was a sad lonely dyke. Her only course of action left was to take up with the father of her child. The guy who had sex with her in the back of her car when she was mad!!

So now, just as most men will tell you, all it takes is the right man, and any lesbian will be cured.

Grrr.. I've sort of run out of steam now.. I'M SOOOOO ANGRY!!

I was SOOOOOOO pissed off when i saw this!! You'd think after playing the same lesbian character for years, she'd know what this would look like - like being a lesbian can be cured, you just need to find the right man. The writer's knew this as well. Obviously they did. To be honest, i'm quiet disgusted by the way they're treating the show's lesbian/gay fanbase. It's just like a slap in the face really... even my dad thought it was wrong, my dad! Who never really gets involved in these kinds of things, but even he could see what something like this is telling the rest of the world....

Helen - Oh please Nikki, be serious!

Nikki - I want to make love you to all night long... is that serious enough?

:lol Wow you really dont realise how crazy each characters storylines are until you read it like that! I dont watch Emmerdale but when its on I catch it cos its pretty funny. Poor old Zoe, I cant believe theyve done this to her! The writers really mustve been at a loose end, cos it doesnt really make much sense does it?

This thread can fall into either catagory. The lesbian cliche FAQ thread is mostly about the cliche as it relates to WT, this could have been posted there, but it can certainly have it´s own thread as well. This is not unlike the AMC or ER thread, except that this sounds even worse. Who could have thought? Anyway, moving this to Genuine Molded Plastic...

I don't watch Emmerdale much, but I did see when Zoe was sucking face with Scott and Chloe saw and went and told everyone, then two women came and said stuff to Zoe. The whole thing with her character sounds really stupid when I think about it.

Interesting side issue here. I can't rememebr how long ago it was but the actress who plays Zoe was once asked if there was any storyline that would make her quit. She replied that if they decided to make Zoe straight, she would quit on prinicple. This leads me to three possible conclusions:

1) She has quit already in protest and they are simply playing out the scripts until her contract expires and she leaves or is killed off.

2) She has went back on her words and is happy to remain in the soap regardless of the ridiculousness of the storyline.

3) That the character of Zoe will "Snap out of it" and realise that she is being foolish and will start dating women again.

I hope that it is 1 or 3, as option 2 does rather show a lack of poor judgement in the actress.

I read today in the newspaper that Zoe shares a kiss with her female lawyer.

One of my sisters is a soap addict, and it was she who told me that Zoe had gone (back to? was she always gay in this?) to boystown. My response was such that she chastised me for swearing in front of my impressionable nephew.

I don't watch Emmerdale, but I was glad that there was a lesbian character in a tv show for so long, and that said soap was set in a rural area. People have preconceived notions about gays, and something like the character of Zoe did a lot to dispel some of them, in my opinion. She wasn't from a big city, she was just someone who lived in the village who happened to be gay, and was more or less accepted.

On a side note, something I always criticised Coronation Street (even though I don't watch that either) for was that it doesn't depict modern society properly, there are very few non-Caucasians, and until recently no homosexuals.

My mother's theory about Zoe is that she's just lonely and wants to fit in and will revert to form. I hope, for the reason stated above, that she's right.

The Zoe storyline makes me scream. i can't watch it anymore (which is saying something - I watch everything!). i think the only way the show can redeem the situation is for Zoe to realise that she is who she is and it doesn't change. Throw in some girl-on-girl smooching and I'll be happy to start watching again.

Yeah shes gay again, but fo how long?

Scott finaly catches them together and ends there relationship. Its really interesting that he knew she was gay, yet still pursued a relationship with her and then is shocked to catch her with a woman. Script writers really need to start cottoning on.
