lamashtu - Thanks for confirming my initial impressions of the Aramaic pronunciation!:D :peace

Jennpurr - Your post confirms what several critics have already stated about the film, i.e., that people tend to leave it with whatever they came in with. If an individual was simply a faithful, believing Christian it is likely that they will find their faith confirmed or even reinforced. However, if an individual already had anti-semitic tendencies and beliefs, it is just as likely that these beliefs will be confirmed and/or reinforced:( . And therein lies my problem with this film and its relentlessly negative depiction of Jews: I'm not so much worried about the USA since this country, for the most part, has decisively rejected anti-semitism in the course of the last sixty years (although, to be sure, there will always be isolated incidents:( ). My concern is about certain countries of Europe (such as Germany, Poland, Russia and especially France, where anti-semitic attacks have increased over the last three years) and the Middle East. Who knows what will happen when this deliberately inflammatory flick finds its way to these places......:eek :paranoid :mad

Frank Rich on Mel Gibson

Quote:
Of course, if a Jew points out such callousness, or reports on how Mr. Gibson exploited a gravely ill Pope as a shill for his movie, he is not practicing journalism or trying to clarify the historical record. He is instead "rabidly anti-Christian," as James Dobson of Focus on the Family is fond of describing Jews who raise questions about Mr. Gibson. The message is clear: Jews who criticize a poor, defenseless multimillionaire movie star and his film are behaving much as Caiaphas and his cronies do in "The Passion" itself. There's a consistency of animus here.

I agree with that, very much. My faith was both confirmed and reinforced, but I know that won't be true for everyone.

Mel gibson had no idea the film would do anything near the success it had. He had actually told the guy who played Jesus that if he did this part he'd probably never work in hollywood again.

someone earlier said about when they nailed Jesus to the cross that it was historically inaccurate with him being nailed through the hands instead of the wrists because it was physically impossible. Bibically it's correct that they nailed him through his hands. In the bible (which I firmly believe) it says Hands, not wrists because there is a different Greek word for wrists. So, scientifically it may be incorrect but biblically it is.

But anyone somewhere, Gibson saying the above things (I'm very dubious he actually believed them) fits perfectly w/ his persecution complex! This is the man who said "If I left that line in ["His blood be on us, and on our children": which he did leave in, he just didn't subtitle it], they'd probably come crucify me!" (As Richard Goldstein inquires, who did Gibson mean by "they"? {Hint: Not Gentiles})

Just look here: this is an actor who likes to be shown being crucified in most of his movies. www.villagevoice.com/issu...winter.php

GG Gibson's true religion (IMO) is megalomania, in which there is "No Such Thing as Bad Publicity": that's what he pursued relentlessly for this movie, and he is reaping the lucrative rewards :miff Out

I don't think I need to see the Nuttiness of the Mel because Gibson has been making this movie for years with himself as the Christ figure. And car chases and things that blow up. Basically in his warped lunkheaded way he presents Jesus as the ultimate tough guy , look at how much he could take and the bastards never wore him down. Isn't that great?

If you want to see a great movie about faith, suffering and transcendence rent Carl Dreyer's ,"The Passion of Joan of Arc". Dreyer's film is terrifying and violent, without bathtubs of blood and a truly awe inspiring display of faith. It's also based on the record from her trial .

Yes, death on the cross was horrific ,but there is nothing new in this film except the unending gore. It's always interested me that the Passion has inspired some sublime music ,some great novels and yet has eluded filmmakers.

Not related to anything really...

I see Mel's little movie has moved up to be the 10th highest grossing film of all time. Point of reference, Nemo is 9th.

There is something I got out of this film.

Now among my friends instead of saying "Jesus H. Christ" we say "Jim H. Caviezel"!

Silly, yes. But hey.

ETA: More Silly. Maybe even a tad offensive, but I thought it was funny.

The Passion on DVD

Postby Jennpurr » Wed May 05, 2004 9:51 pm

I don't know how many of you will actually be interested in knowing this, but... The Passion is estimated to be released in August. If anyone would be interested in pre-ordering the movie, you can here: The Passion of The Christ

You can find it here also.

It's rumored to be a 5 disc set. That could be wrong or right, I'm not exactly sure.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'll probably wait till other places start their pre-ordering. I'm sure Walmart will have it for much cheaper then the links above.

I just thought I'd let you guys know what I found, if any of you were interested.

Jen

P.S. I read some where else that the release date is in October. I'm not sure which one is right or if either of them are, but I'm seeing August (15) everywhere else, so...

Hemiola,

Like I said, that's just a rumor right now because I can not confirm that, that is true. The person who wrote it could have been just playing around with people's heads. It's rumored to have tons of extra's and interviews.

That's all I know. If I see/hear anything else, I'll let you know.

Hemiola: More slo mo flagellation?

The latest issue of Cinefex, the magazine of visual effects, had an article on the Passion. The bulk of the effects were related to whip marks , blood and wounds. One picture showed a make up man with a board covered with whip mark prosthetics. The article is in Cinefex 97

Another DVD with interviews on the Passion is being released in March: Mel Gibson's Passion
Quote:
MPI Home Video have announced the release of Mel Gibson's Passion in which Diane Sawyer interviews filmmaker Mel Gibson about The Passion of the Christ. Gibson discusses his own religious beliefs with Sawyer, and explains how his faith helped him overcome struggles with addiction and other personal problems at a spiritual low point in his life. These dark experiences ultimately led him to make The Passion of the Christ. Sawyer also interviews Abraham Foxman, the national director of the Anti- Defamation League, who shares his views on the The Passion of the Christ. Religious scholars, members of the clergy and others assess the film's potential impact. The disc will be available to own from the 8th March and should retail at around $19.98.
With all the issues the film has raised it's good to see a release like this with different views on the film.

i saw this movie, i can't say i was inspired, insulted or shocked. Mostly I was amused by the depictions of the demons. They made me chuckle. I guess I was way over-prepared for the violence because I was not shocked and neither were my parents, devout christians.
