Long but good NYTimes.com article asking the question:

Quote:
Are Hollywood’s depictions of Japan in "Lost in

Translation," "The Last Samurai" and "Kill Bill" naive,

racist, well-intended, accurate - or all of the above?

www.nytimes.com/2004/01/0...2a57c86dd0

And you know I'm seeing parallels. Which is not to say they're in exactly the same boat. Just...parallels.

BTW, because this is an NYTimes.com article, you do need to register to read it, but that's free and generally worth the time.

More parallels? Hee, perhaps you could copy and paste the entire article for us, it would help the discussion and usually articles get removed from their original sites after a while. The link gives credit to the original source.

I hesitated to copy and paste the whole article for two reasons. One is that as a writer and editor for another site myself, I don't like it when people do that instead of linking. The buffy.nu site, for example, copies my book reviews and reposts them, getting the paragraphs out of whack in the process, and denying us the raise in hit count.

Also, the Hollywood’s Land of the Rising Cliche article is four pages long. Better, I thought, to point the way and let folks who want to follow, follow.
