Room at the Top - Adam Ant

If some of this fits some of you
Or like the things that you might do
It's the pleasure and the pain
That makes you do it all again

An 18th century brain in
A 21st century head

At this moment in time, this song really says it all. It's funny how music can be like that...

Circle Of Light ~ Ani Difranco

standing just outside
the circle of light
avoiding the pool cues
watching the game
waiting for you
hanging in the doorway
like smoke
like mistletoe
this is where i'll be
whenever you come or go
this is where I'll be
whenever you come or go

i'm gonna roll you over
gonna peel you back
expose your tender center
watch the juices flow from the cracks
gonna peel you out
of your protective shell
i might just have to break right in there
and raise some hell
I might have to break right in there
and raise some hell

i don't have no grand plan
for you and me
just nothing is impossible
i mean, nothing is unlikely
i'm just riding the tide
nothing more
and it's bound to take me out some
before it brings me back to shore
it's bound to take me out some
before it brings me back

when you look in the mirror
do you see visions of your past
i ain't got time for halfway
i ain't got time for halfassed
when i look in the mirror
i see the days to come
and my face is just a trace
of where i'm coming from
my face is just a trace
of where i'm coming from

just outside the circle of light
is where you've been living
your whole life
you've got to jump into the center
and launch your attack
and then you've got to crawl back
in the corners of the room
where it's really black
i will meet you in the corners
where it's really black

This is a beautiful song and so bitterswet, I love it...Billy Joel, Piano Man

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be

He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while

And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say "Man what are you doing here?"

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

I miss the friend who loves this song.

Somewhere deep inside
Somethings got a hold on you
And its pushing me aside
See it stretch on forever

I know Im right
For the first time in my life
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon

Stripping back the coats
Of lies and deception
Back to nothingness
Like a week in the desert

I know Im right
For the first time in my life
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon

So dont say no, dont say nothings wrong
Cos when you get back home maybe Ill be gone

It would cause me pain
If we were to end it
But I could start again
You can depend on it

I know Im right
For the first time in my life
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon

Better Be Home Soon - Crowded House

i've spent the last couple of nights hanging out with an exgirlfriend who is in town for a seminar. we first dated ten years ago this summer and parted ways once and for all about four years later. after another several years passed and i'd had my heart broken by others, she and i were able to be friends again and have been for the last few. so we had some wine tonight, reminisced, and i was struck by the memory of how fervently and innocently i loved back then.

we used to put this song on mix tapes for each other all the time. i wonder if i could ever feel like that about someone again (or vice versa). here's to hoping.

Suzanne Vega, "World Before Columbus"

If your love were taken from me
Every color would be black and white
It would be as flat as the world before Columbus
That's the day that I lose half my sight

If your life were taken from me
All the trees would freeze in this cold ground
It would be as cruel as the world before Columbus
Sail to the edge and I'd be there looking down

Those men who lust for land
And for riches strange and new
Who love those trinkets of desire
Oh they never will have you

And they'll never know the gold
Or the copper in your hair
How could they weigh the worth
Of you so rare

If your love were taken from me
Every light that's bright would soon go dim
It would be as dark as the world before Columbus
Down the waterfall and I'd swim over the brim

Those men who lust for land
And for riches strange and new
Who love those trinkets of desire
Oh they will never have you

And they'll never know the gold
Or the copper in your hair
How could they weigh the worth
Of you so rare

As performed by Bonnie Raitt:

Quote:
I CAN'T MAKE YOU LOVE ME

Turn down the lights
turn down the bed
turn down these voices inside my head
lay down with me
tell me no lies
just hold me close
don't patronize
don't patronize

I can't make you love me
if you don't
you can't make your heart feel
something it won't
here in the dark
these final hours
I will lay down my heart
I feel the power
but you won't
no, you won't
And I can't make you love me
if you don't

I close my eyes
then I won't see
the love you don't feel
when you're holding me
morning will come
and I'll do what's right
just give me til then
to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't
you can't make your heart feel
something it won't
here in the dark
these final hours
I will lay down my heart
I feel the power
but you won't
No, you won't
and I can't make you love me
if you don't

(Lyrics, Will Downing)

This has been a special song for my wife and me at different points in our relationship.

Baby, I love you. I always find home in your eyes.

Karinna

Peter Gabriel - "In your eyes"

love I get so lost, sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away
I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

love, I don't like to see so much pain
so much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

and all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
the heat I see in your eyes
in your eyes

Well, after realizing what a fool I have been and that no one will probably ever dig deep enough to see the real me or realize what a great catch I am, I have resigned myself to the fact that I will probably always be alone, because no relationship is better than a bad relationship, and it seems like all these women want to do is play games. And it's really no big deal, I do well on my own anyway. Still...

Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Greenday

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
and I'm the only one and I walk alone

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

I was 12 years old, when I first encountered "The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" . . . HAIR! (in book form, strangely enough---I still have it).

It blew my frickin' little mind! :shock

There are still some moonlit nights, when I'll find myself singing "Gladdy-glup-gloopy-nibby-nabby-nupy-la-la-la-lo-lo!" :laugh (from "Good Morning, Starshine"---hey, you just had to be 12 in 1974 I guess! ;-))

Eh . . . but that's not the way I'm feeling right now. :happy

Instead, there's a song in Hair, about a woman who's so wrapped in her own priorities, that she completely cuts out of her life the one who loves her...

(who she continues to ignore, even as her lover sings...)

Quote:
Easy To Be Hard

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard, easy to be cold

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be proud, easy to say no

Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice
Do you only care about bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend, I need a friend

How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
Easy to be proud, easy to say no

Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice
Do you only care about bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend, we all need a friend

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be proud, easy to say no
Easy to be cold, easy to say no
Come, on, easy to give in, easy to say no
Easy to be cold, easy to say no
Much too easy to say no

[Lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado: the band "3 Dog Night" had a hit w/ it]

GG Have I ever been the "Easy to be Hard" person? Truthfully, probably sometime (I can't remember when, but I suppose the Lesser Angels of my nature have found a way to paper-over the guilt). I guess it's something we should all look in the mirror, to see if we're like this. :spin Out

But speaking of looking in the mirror: dealing w/ "the other end [of "Easy to be Hard"], the following seems to capture how I'm feeling right now.. :depressed

[All right: enough wallowing! Enough! :whip]

ETA: the Kitten crashed as I was going to post this last night---so help me, I hope this is my last post obsessing over my now-over relationship... (Heh: KD, I was thinking about "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" too---hang in there!)

Hang in there GG, it'll get better. Just remember that everything happens for a reason, however trite and cliched that sounds.

These parts of Rilo Kiley's "A Man/Me/Then Jim" are hitting home...

And at the wake I waited around to see my ex first love
And I barely recognized her, but I knew exactly what she was thinking of
We sat quietly in the corner whispering close about loss
And I remembered why I loved her, and I asked her why I drove her off

She said
The slow fade of love
Its soft edge might cut you...

Slow fade of love
It might hit you from below
It's your gradual descent
Into a life you never meant
It's the slow fade of love.

For the lovers who enter our lives for a short time and yet etch themselves on our souls...

I spent a reckless night inside the wonder of your everlasting charm,
now I'm haunted by geography, and the flora and the fauna of your heart.

Since my toe hurts but I know that soaking it in warm water will help it heal, I offer these words of comfort to Sally's Toe, Right Foot, Leg, The Body:

"Cruel to be Kind" by Nick Lowe

Cruel to be kind, in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it's a very good sign
Cruel to be kind, means that I love you
Baby, you gotta be cruel to be kind

With all that has happened to some of my friends in the last month, I heard this song today for the first time in a very long time. I've asked someone to explain to me why things happen sometimes and this explains how I've been feeling.

Show Me The Way ~ Styx

Every night I say a prayer in the hope that there's a heaven
And every day I'm more confused as the saints turn into sinners
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I've lost my faith

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Show me the way

As I slowly drift to sleep, for a moment dreams are sacred
I close my eyes and know there's peace in a world so filled with hatred
That I wake up each morning and turn on the news to find we've so far to go
And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid that I just won't know

Show me the way, Show me the way
Take me tonight to the mountain
And wash my confusion away

And if I see a light, should I believe
Tell me how will I know

I was taking my boyfriend to the trains to take him home as he was visiting me for the last few days. We get to the platform and find that the train there is going to his town and leaving in about 30 seconds. We push down the platform to try and find a space as it was overcrowded. I hear the doors beeping warning they're about to close and the next thing I know my boyfriend is on the other side of them, leaving. I didn't even get time to say goodbye. :sob
Now I don't know when I'll next see him, so this song sums it up pretty well:

Blink 182- I Miss You
Where are you? and I'm so sorry
I cannot sleep I cannot dream tonight
I need somebody and always
This sick strange darkness
Comes creeping on so haunting every time
And as I stared I counted
Webs from all the spiders
Catching things and eating their insides
Like indecision to call you
and hear your voice of treason
Will you come home and stop this pain tonight
Stop this pain tonight

Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)

Unwell - Matchbox 20

Feeling like I'm headed for a breakdown
And I don't know why

But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be...me

it makes me think there must be something wrong with me
Out of all the hours thinking
Somehow I've lost my mind

After reading Barb's post about her friend earlier, and about all the other Kittens having such a hard time right now, one song immediately came to mind. I've sent this to Barb before, but I want to direct it to her and to everyone who needs comfort in these hard times.

Evanescence - Give Unto Me

I've been watching you from a distance
The distance sees through your disguise
All I want from you is your hurting
I want to heal you
I want to save you from the dark

Give unto me your troubles
I'll endure your suffering
Place onto me your burden
I'll drink your deadly poison

Why should I care if they hurt you
Somehow it matters more to me
Than if I were hurting myself
Save you (save you)
I'll save you

Give unto me your troubles
I'll endure your suffering
Place onto me your burden
I'll drink your deadly poison

Fear not the flame of my love's candle
Let it be the sun in your world of darkness
Give unto me all that frightens you
I'll have your nightmares for you
If you sleep soundly

Give unto me your troubles
I'll endure your suffering
Place onto me your burden
I'll drink your deadly poison

Fear not the flame of my love's candle
Let it be the sun in your world of darkness
Give unto me all that frightens you
I'll have your nightmares for you
If you sleep soundly

Fear not the flame of my love's candle
Let it be the sun in your world of darkness

James - Say Something

You’re as tight as a hunter’s trap
Hidden well, what are you concealing
Poker face, carved in stone
Amongst friends, but all alone
Why do you hide

Say something, say something, anything
I’ve shown you everything
Give me a sign
Say something, say something, anything
Your silence is deafening
Pay me in kind

Take a drug to set you free
Strange fruit from a forbidden tree
You’ve got to come down soon
More than a drug is what I need
Need a change of scenery
Need a new life

Say something, say something anything
I’ve shown you everything
Give me a sign
Say something, say something, anything
Your silence is deafening
Pay me in kind

Say something

I’m open wide, open wondering
Have you swallowed everything
Pay me in kind

I'm Not Waiting By Julia Murney

Two years
Three years
You have had my eye
Handsome
Friendly
Someone else's guy
I'll see you at a party
And we will say hello
We'll chatter at a party
And I'll wonder if you know
I'm not waiting for you
I'm not waiting for you

Single?
Hardly
You can play the field
Friends say
No way
I just clutch my shield
But I'll see you at a party
And want to hold you so
I'll feel you at a party
But I quickly whisper, "no"
I'm not waiting for you
I'm not waiting for you

Am I old, am I dumb
Do I wear the wrong kind of jeans
Am I fat, am I slow
Do I read the wrong magazines
Am I tall, am I cold
Am I all the wrong in-betweens
I'm not changing
I'm not growing
You're not watching
I'm not going
We're not loving
You're not seeing
I'm not waiting
I'm not waiting...

Four years
Five years
Finally get that call
You're free
I'm free
Free to disenthrall
But we stagger to a party
As if it were an alabi
You loose me at the party
And I stop to wonder why
I'm still waiting for you...

I'm not waiting
For you

For Linda 12/16/44 - 7/1/06 Thank you my friend. I'll never forget you.

It's Your Song ~ Garth Brooks

Standing in the spotlight
On such a perfect night
Knowing that your out there listening
I remember one time
When I was so afraid
Didn't think I had the courage
To stand up on this stage
Then you reached into my heart
And you found the melody
And if there ever was somebody
Who made me believe in me
It was you
It was you

It was your song that made me sing
It was your voice that gave me wings
And it was your light that shined
Guiding my heart to find
This place where I belong
It was your song

Every night I pray
Before the music starts to play
That I'll do my best and I won't let you down
And for all the times I've stood here
This feeling feels brand new
And any time I doubt myself I think of you

'Cause It was your song that made me sing
It was your voice that gave me wings
And it was your light that shined
Guiding my heart to find
This place where I belong
It was your song

Dreams can come true
With God's great angels like you

It was your song that made me sing
It was your voice that gave me wings
And it was your light that shined
Guiding my heart to find
This place where I belong
It was your song
It was your song
It's always been your song

when i think about my loved ones who have died, as i have been doing today, this song comes to mind and makes me feel a little better. maybe it will help others too.

"When I Go" - Dave Carter* & Tracy Grammer

Come, lonely hunter, chieftain and king, I will fly like the falcon when I go
Bear me my brother under your wing, I will strike fell like lightning when I go
I will bellow like the thunder drum, invoke the storm of war
A twisting pillar spun of dust and blood up from the prairie floor
I will sweep the foe before me like a gale out on the snow
And the wind will long recount the story, reverence and glory, when I go

Spring, spirit dancer, nimble and thin, I will leap like coyote when I go
Tireless entrancer, lend me your skin, I will run like the gray wolf when I go
I will climb the rise at daybreak, I will kiss the sky at noon
Raise my yearning voice at midnight to my mother in the moon
I will make the lay of long defeat and draw the chorus slow
I'll send this message down the wire and hope that someone wise is listening when I go

And when the sun comes trumpets from his red house in the east
He will find a standing stone where long I chanted my release
He will send his morning messenger to strike the hammer blow
And I will crumble down uncountable in showers of crimson rubies when I go

Sigh, mournful sister, whisper and turn, I will rattle like dry leaves when I go
Stand in the mist where my fire used to burn, I will camp on the night breeze when I go
And should you glimpse my wandering form out on the borderline
Between death and resurrection and the council of the pines
Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so
All your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me when I go

* dave carter, the author of this song, died a few years back of a heart attack at the age of 50.

"Special Ones" - george

isn't it funny how you never really screamed at my face
but your anger, so unspoken and unchannelled, permeates my essence
to the point where I don't want to see you, hear you, be anywhere near you
you probably think I'm threatened by you, but your illusionary power doesn't threaten me
actually I think it's kind of funny that you create an illusion that is a mirror
I don't appreciate you, and I know that that surprises you
I suppose you see that those who follow their hearts always win
those with integrity have won the match before it's begun

so rather than being kicked around, I'm going to kick you to the curb
so rather than being pushed around, I'm going to push you away first
so rather than trying to protect you, I'm going to cover my bases first
so rather than trying to open my heart, I'm going to lock it with a key
so that only the special ones can ever get through to me

some can see beyond the barrier of threshold
whereas others can't see beyond their sculptured mould
you could offer me nothing, you could offer me nothing that I need
do you think I'm asking too much?
a kind of respect and trust that shouldn't even be questioned
how can I open my heart with dishonesty sitting next to me?
I've honoured your honour to the point of embarrassment
but innocence in the hands of the guilt-free is kicked to, is kicked to the curb
I was ashamed of my innocence, I was ashamed of my innocence
but now with clarity I see that your bullshit is just not worthy of me

I don't want to be angry...
I don't want to be angry...
this is not worthy of me
but now with clarity I see
that I can walk away
I can walk away

so rather than being kicked around, I'm going to kick you to the curb
so rather than being pushed around, I'm going to push you away first
so rather than trying to protect you, I'm going to cover my bases first
so rather than trying to open my heart, I'm going to lock it with a key
so that only the special ones can ever get through to me

"Who Knew" -- Pink

You took my hand
You showed me how
You promised me you'd be around
Uh huh
That's right
I took your words
And I believed
In everything
You said to me
Yeah huh
That's right

If someone said three years from now
You'd be long gone
I'd stand up and punch them out
Cause they're all wrong and
I know better
cause you said forever
and ever
who knew

Remember when we were such fools
And so convinced and just too cool
Oh no
No no
I wish I could touch you again
I wish I could still call you a friend
I'd give anything

When someone said count your blessings now
For they're long gone
I guess I just didn't know how
I was all wrong
They knew better
Still you said forever
And ever
Who knew

Yeah yeah
I'll keep you locked in my head
Until we meet again
Until we
Until we meet again
And I won't forget you my friend
What happened

If someone said three years from now
You'd be long gone
I'd stand up and punch them out
Cause they're all wrong and
That last kiss
I'll cherish
Until we meet again
And time makes
It harder
I wish I could remember
But I keep
Your memory
You visit me in my sleep
My darling
Who knew
My darling
My darling
Who knew
My darling
I miss you
My darling
Who knew
Who knew

Song that has summed stuff up at the moment!

"Overrated (Everything Is)" - Less Than Jake

Maybe I'm jaded and bored
Always looking for more
Wait around for the next big fix
I know I'm a wreck, I'm a mess
But I couldn't care less
Don't know what it would take to change me

Everybody's so afraid to be different
Please excuse me now if I don't get it

I think sex is overrated
So is always getting wasted
Designer drugs and dead end jobs
And classic rock is so outdated
I'm so sick of therapy
And all the things it's done to me
How can I be satisfied?
When everything is overrated

Maybe the problem is me
But I won't make believe
And I can't take this mediocrity
What if this is a test?
And I deserve what I get?
Will I wake up with all the answers?

Everybody's too afraid to be different
Please excuse me now if I don't listen

I think sex is overrated
So is always getting wasted
Designer drugs and dead end jobs
And classic rock is so outdated
I'm so sick of therapy
And all the things it's done to me
How can I be satisfied?
When everything is overrated

(Woah, woah).
When everything is overrated.

Can't stand the normal
Can't stand the ordinary
Find me anything that's extraordinary
Show me something
Show me anything
Am I the only one?
Am I the only one?

I think sex is overrated
So is always getting wasted
All my friends and family
They make my life so complicated
I'm so sick of apathy and TV show reality
How can I be satisfied?
When everything is overrated.

Woah, woah.
When everything is overrated.

Low Place Like Home - Sneaker Pimps

You walked all over, in your blunderstones
In your own road movie, with your one armed man
Gonna make it to the problem page
Trouble-shoot your life
Gonna make it to the problem page
Need some time and space

Just to find yourself
I hope you find yourself
In a low place like home
Low place like home

You talked it over from your bedroom throne
Making sense of nothing, like your one armed man,
Read your future in the magazine, search your stars for clues
Read your future in the magazine, tells you what to lose

Just to find yourself
I hope you find yourself
In a low place like home
Low place like home

You fall all over, in your small town heels
Catching hold of nothing, like your one armed man,
Treat your life like a tragedy, self-inflict abuse
Treat your life like a tragedy, precious else to choose
Crucify yourself, I hope you find yourself

In a low place like home
Low place like home

And sometimes when you're on you're really fucking on
And your friends they sing along and they love you
But the lows are so extreme that the good seems fucking cheap
And it teases you for weeks in its absense
But you'll fight and you'll make it through
You'll fake it if you have to
And you'll show up for work with a smile
And you'll be be better, you'll be smarter
More grown up and a better daughter
Or son and a real good friend
You'll be awake and you'll be alert
You'll be positive though it hurts
And you'll laugh and embrace all your friends
And you'll be a real good listener
You'll be honest, you'll be brave
You'll be handsome, you'll be beautiful
You'll be happy

Pride can stand
A thousand Trials
The Strong will never fall
But watching Stars without You
My Soul cried
Grieving heart is full of Pain
of, of The Aching

'Cause I'm Kissing You, oh
I'm Kissing You, Love

Touch Me Deep
Pure and True
Gift to Me Forever

'Cause I'm Kissing You, oh
I'm Kissing You, Love

Where are You now?
Where are You now?
'Cause I'm Kissing You
I'm Kissing You

DES'REE -Kissing You

I miss you love... :aww

I didnt realize what this thread was about..... :blush

I am finding out that maybe I was wrong
That I've fallen down and I can't do this alone
Stay with me, this is what I need, please?

This heart, it beats, beats for only you
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is your's
Please don't go now, Please don't fade away

That's Paramore, "My Heart"
