I've been watching the women's tournament. I am a west coast/ pac 10 person so I am hoping Stanford has a good showing. They're already doing well but taking down Vanderbilt tonight would be awesome cause they'd show the NCAA committee that their seeding was wrong.

Ultimately, I think the final will be between Duke and Tennessee

I'm goin with Duke as well though I think they are getting very lucky against Xavier right now. I was just glad OSU beat St. Joes I knew that they weren't that good.

5th straight Final Four

Go Lady Huskies:eatme

UCONN....Huskies...UCONN....Huskies

:smash Lady Vols? Where?.....:smash

Just kidding Tenn fans, it's just I can't stand the coach of the Lady Vols esp. cuz of her deragatory comments of gays a while back. not a big fan of Summit's. though we have a pretty good rivalry going.

Anywhoo, I think Duke and Beard are pretty good this year as well. So this should be interesting. Was is Duke that shut UCONN down with a full court press earlier in the year? I can't remember.

Go LSU! :applause

I watched a couple of their games and really liked what I saw. Since I don't like any of the other teams, I hope LSU gets the championship.

Edited to add:

I'm so happy that Minnesota won! I just love when the underdog wins. :)

Will be cheering for Stanford tonight, but I hope the championship game will be LSU x Minnesota.

Dude, minnesota beat duke! That's crazy in such a good way. I am cheering for them all the way now.

Stanford got close, oh well. I have decided now that I am really back in to women's basketball. I kinda dropped the whole thing for like 7 years. So many seniors this year will make the WNBA completely worth watching. I love Powell. I really like her game.

I disagreed with the call but still think the Vols would've won in overtime. Baylor's coach kinda scared me...frightening stepford wife hair.

UConn is just awesome and Geno Auriemma has a lot to be proud of. They came through for him and Diana just kicked ass. Some really good matchups this year.

You go, Candace Parker! :applause

Girl makes giant leap for womankind

Associated Press

Candace Parker beat five boys All-Americans in a slam dunk contest.

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - In the most recent example of the evolution of women athletes, a high school girl did more than just compete against five of the best boys high school basketball players in the nation in a slam dunk contest on Monday night.

She defeated them.

Candace Parker, a 6-foot-3 17-year-old from Naperville, Ill., beat a field of competitors that included at least two who could be playing in the NBA next season.

"I hope 10 years from now this isn't a big deal," said Parker, who will play at the University of Tennessee next season. "That would be my dream. That 10 years from now three or four girls enter the dunk contest and it's not a big deal. It's not like, "Wow, she won.' I hope that happens."

Parker achieved her milestone with a final dunk attempt, a right-handed slam that she spiced up by covering her eyes with her left arm during her final few strides toward the basket. The crowd of 5,000 in the Carl Albert High gymnasium cheered wildly as the ball ripped through the net.

The event was a prelude to the McDonald's All-American Game. Both the slam dunk contest and the boys' game will be shown tonight on ESPN, beginning at 7.

The dunk earned 79 out of a possible 80 points from eight judges. The only holdout was Barry Sanders, the former NFL running back, who gave her a nine out of 10. "I was pretty impressed," Sanders said. "She was very good."

Parker outdunked Josh Smith, a potential lottery pick in June's NBA draft, Darius Washington, a possible first-round pick, and J.R. Smith, a North Carolina-bound player considered arguably the best high school dunker in the past decade.

She benefited from the fact that the boys often attempted difficult dunks and missed, while Parker, who used a women's ball, which is slightly smaller than the men's, attempted somewhat safer dunks.

Two of her attempts, however, had touches of creativity: One in which she wrapped the ball around her waist before jumping, and the final one in which she briefly covered her eyes.

The McDonald's All-American Game includes as many as 12 players who could bypass college for the NBA draft. The players are ranked so highly that the game has been likened to an NBA tryout that will help determine draft positioning.

Parker's triumph was the latest in a series of significant steps for women athletes. In the past year, three women have competed in the men's Professional Golfers Association tour. Michelle Wie, 14, played in her first PGA Tour event in January, the Sony Open in Honolulu, missing the cut by one stroke and finishing ahead of 48 golfers.

Howard Garfinkel, a slam dunk competition judge and longtime boys' selection committee member, said he never thought he would see a woman win a slam dunk contest.

"It means the women are getting better," said Garfinkel, one of the most respected talent evaluators over the past three decades. "I really enjoy watching the women play. They play like the men did in the 1950s and '60s, back-door passes, pick and rolls. In the men's game, there isn't much basketball being played. It's a lot of three-point shots. It's (a game of) horse."

In 2002, Lisa Leslie became the first WNBA player ever to dunk in a game. The first woman to dunk in the college game was West Virginia's Georgeann Wells in 1984.

"By the nature of our bodies, women are behind," said Jennifer Azzi, one of the judges and a five-year WNBA veteran. "But we're catching up to where the men were, say, 30 years ago."

Women's regional finals highest-rated in ESPN history

March 31, 2004

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) -- Ratings for the four regional finals of the NCAA women's basketball tournament were the highest since ESPN began exclusive coverage of the tournament in 1996.

The four games averaged a 1.7 rating, up 70 percent from last season's 1.0.

So far this tournament, ESPN is averaging a 1.1 rating, up 57 percent from last year's 0.7. ESPN2 is averaging a 0.5, up from last year's 0.3.

The rating is the percentage of all homes with TVs, whether or not they are in use.
