Now, on to the deep stuff.

After arguing with an idiot theist, i had an epiphany about the 'it's a choice to be gay' thing.

It goes like this:
For your standard christian bigot, being attracted to your own sex HAS to be a choice.
If it wasn't, then it would be no more 'wrong' to be gay, than it would be to have red hair.
There is no wrongness attached to how you were born, it's not your fault.
And 'god' would be responsible for making you that way.
We've already decided that being gay is wrong, it fits with our prejudices (icky!) and our teachings.
And god can do nothing wrong.
Therefore god didn't do it.
Therefore you did, because there's only you and god in this story.
Therefore it has to be your fault.
Therefore you 'chose' to be gay.

Keep in mind, there's no experimental data to back this up, just logic and speculation.
But i think it's pretty solid.

Even when you point it out to them in a really obvious way, they usually don't get it though.
'Fella, if it's a choice, you should be able to decide to be gay, right now. Try it.'

Yeah, that usually gets ignored.

Anyone else run into this?

R

I think the best sticking point in this everlasting "choice" debate is not, "OK, then, choose to be gay," but really, "OK, then, why the hell would I choose this life?"

I've heard the choice variation - you can't choose how you feel but you can choose how to act (or not act) upon them. Which is a lovely way of blaming you if you seek out companionship and love.

I remember way back in the 80's I was directing a show and my Asst. Director, who I'd worked with for about 5 years got born again and condemned me to hell in no uncertain terms. It hurt like hell, pun intended I guess. Especially since she was a friend and the first person I'd come out to a year earlier.

I also have to say that I have some Christian friends who treat me with unfailing love and acceptance - dagnabit - gets harder and harder to find people to hate! Complicated world . . .
