Toys R Us's charity work.

No, seriously, it sucks. Every time you buy something, every single frickin' time, the (moderately) perky and cheerful check-out girl does a "Would you like to support the Children's Hospital by buying a crappy balloon?" spiel. Now, supporting the Children's Hospital, fine. Except if you read the fine print (which I did due to boredom in a queue a while back), the Hospital gets 20c from every balloon sold. They sell for $1. So taking out the cost of the balloon, which are balloons fer cryin' out loud, and hence cost like half a cent, Toys R Us's 'charity' involves them pocketing the majority of the cash. Bastards!

And yet, I feel like a complete jerk every time I say no :happy

I wouldn't be so peeved, except that Toys R Us are the crappiest toy stores in Sydney, and simultaneously (these days) pretty much the only toy stores in Sydney. Their range is pathetic - there's a better selection of Marvel Legends and Pirates of the Carribbean action figures at Dymocks than Toys R Us. For those of you who don't know, Dymocks is a bookstore.

They don't even have a fluffy cat! There's a whole goddamn wall of fluffy animals, and no cats! What the heck?!

Okay, that went off on a tangent, but it's a peeved tangent, so it's on topic.

I'll post while this peeve is fresh in my mind.

I just checked my answering machine and someone keeps calling, getting the recording, waiting for the beep and then not saying anything.

Folks...if you're going to call me and you don't want to leave a message that's fine. Just hang up before the beep. Don't wait until the recording's over and then sit there for thirty minutes wasting my time with your silence. 'K? :D :happy

The short version of my pet peeve is silly skin.

Here's the longer version. Three days of enjoying the sun into my holiday I start getting a rash on my arms, (no sniggers please!) My skin is always a bit odd when hot due to excema. Day four it gets worse, its now on my legs. I decide it is one on two things - heat rash or a reaction to the sun cream. So I spend a day inside and buy different sun cream. No difference. I spent the last two days hiding inside as no sun cream = no playing out in the sun. So I have come back from hols with an odd combo of tan and rash, lets hope there is tan undereath otherwise I'll have white spots when it goes away.

I somehow don't feel peeved enough to post here, but I am mildly annoyed, so I guess that counts.

Dynigirl I agree with Candleshoe.

I did a google for sexual descrimination and the top link was for

http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/ac ... W021854391

which has some interesting information on descrimination.

A couple of interesting snippets

[blockquote]Women and men are also entitled to equal pay and conditions for work of equal value. [/blockquote]

Forcing women to wear makeup but not men definitely counts as unequal conditions.

[blockquote]The penalties for sex discrimination can be high, both for organisations and individuals, since there is no limit on compensation.[/blockquote]

And they're forcing you to wear high heels? What about the health aspects?

my peeve is that i don't know u.k. law!! in the u.s. it's perfectly legal for businesses in the services industry to have gender specific grooming requirements as long as they are not unequally burdensome on a certain gender. they actually found that "teasing, curling or styling" one's hair and buying and applying make-up each day for a woman was no more burdensome than a man having to keep his hair short!! it's a load of crap. i'm curious to know what the attorney told you dyni. i'm going to have to look into this, i'm wickedly peeved.

KTV - the jist is I can either claim for a grievance or sex discrimnation, but either way I am likely to loose my job, as they are not likely to back down for one person.

With a bit of digging the make-over crap a few months back was a set up by group HR. :smash

Ah, HR, as in "you can't spell wHo caRes withou HR", the bane of every employees existance.

There are a couple of other options.

If you can get other people to support you then maybe you could consider some form of industrial action.

Alternatively you could publicise what the company's doing. I'm sure there's plenty of other people who would be peeved by it and who might even boycott the company. You'd have to do it carefully or you would definitely lose your job.

Finally you could tell them that wearing makeup is against your religious beliefs. That might make them pause for thought.

Topic: My peeve is companies that think they can treat their employees like dirt. As Citizen Smith used to say, "Come the glorious day of the revolution, they'll be the first up against the wall." :pride

Latinamerican soap operas (except some Brazilian ones, which are somewhat bearable when they focus more on the humor than on the drama). They really, really annoy me. Terrible plots (if you can call it that), and the dubs are awful, incredibly unoriginal titles (there are thousands of soaps entitled Maria Something-or-other, it's ridiculous!)... Urgh.

Right now there's this one callled Rebelde, it's Argentinian, I think, and it's some kind of big hit with the kids now. I don't know exactly what it's about, something rebel Catholic school kids (or at least that's what the uniforms look like) that have a band or whatever. It's really God-awful and my little sister loves it. She watches the thing everyday, she talks about it all the time, she's got pictures and cds and other themed stuff.

I think I want to strangle my sister.

We had a little training session at one of my jobs last week. And I just gotta say, manipulating my clients into buying hundreds of dollars worth of skin care products that I wouldn't touch with a stick does not qualify as "really caring for them."

My pet peeve for today is: When I open the freezer door and strategically placed items slide out and onto the floor. So I pick them up and put them back and then they slide out again... so I'm standing there in a race to close the freezer door before the items (my frozen Charleston Chews) can make it past to slide out onto the floor again.. grr... (the same thing always happens to me with popsicles, too...)

Emms, might there be an argument for not putting the item back in exactly the same place? You could perhaps find it a less-slidey home? :p

I dislike it when people don 't clean up their messes and then later go and complain that everything is always a mess. Or how they refuse to clean up because they don't want to be the one's always cleaning. (But you're a mother, and it's your mess anyway!) And lazy people. I came home and there was a thing of tea sitting on the porch and I was like "mmm yummy Ill bring it inside" so I drank some. Later my sister ask's why I drank it, apparently it had been out there for a few week's but no one bothered to take it in. :| That's just lazy.
