Publicity for Tipping the Velvet

Postby Killin Joke » Fri Oct 04, 2002 7:13 pm

Update: just saw BBC2 doin' some promoting. Apparently it's not at 10 p.m. this wednesday, but at 9 p.m. Damn... I left the city where I study in a hurry today, and forgot to pack my tv guide. Anyway, sincerely hope I can program it...

I put up TheComplex link (the online lesbian soap opera). However, they apparently overshot their bandwith by 500%. They'll be back up as soon as they take care of it.

Lastly, didn't Lili Taylor play a lesbian in Pret a Porter? Thought she did pretty well there. I loved her in Say Anything though -- her character should've been a lesbian!

And here's a thought for a cutie lesbian romance -- Lili's character in Say Anything getting together with Mary Stuart Masterson's character in Some Kind of Wonderful .

Frida

Postby Culzean » Sat Oct 05, 2002 10:50 am

We were watching Entertainment Tonight on TV last night and they showed a clip from the upcoming film Frida. The clip was of Salma Hayak and Ashley Judd dancing a tango. All I can say is...whoa!

Ashley looked stunning, as usual, and Salma looked HOT.

I know it's not a lesbian film, and I would see it regardless of any lesbian content, but I think that dance alone may be worth the price of admission.

Tipping the Velvet trailer

Postby tyche » Sat Oct 05, 2002 1:25 pm

I saw an interview with Andrew Davies, who adapted the novel for TV, and he was asked how he'd describe the show. And he said "Two women fucking. Each other." Hmm.

Anyway, I've just seen a trailer for Tipping the Velvet, and it looks pretty interesting. Highlight for me: the dialogue "She's just everything to me."

Earlier this week, I also watched a modern adaptation of 'Othello', and it starred Keeley Hawes and Rachael Stirling, the two leads in 'Tipping', as best friends. And there was definitely some subtext between them - they were quite affectionate with each other in terms of touching. Also, I can see why they cast Rachael Stirling in a role where she'd have to impersonate a man - she has a really husky voice. (Having said that, it doesn't sound particularly masculine, just deep.)

Oh, and I was wrong about the title of that Lili Taylor film earlier in the thread - sorry. It's Abel Ferrara's fault for making two films with similar-sounding titles at around the same time...

Good news for non-UK kittens, well for those of you that own multi-region DVD players anyway. According to the Sunday Mirror Tipping the Velvet will be out on DVD later this month. I have to agree that the trailer looks good and only three days to find out if it lives up to all the hype. I can't wait.

Lily Tomlin

Postby theatremouse » Sun Oct 06, 2002 2:31 pm

dudes! ok, this is kinda after the fact, but (wait, time out, theatre is media, yes? i think so. i'm gonna run with that) Lily Tomlin's doing live shoes now. yay! even though she's doing west wing now. yay! so, anyway, last night i had super happy surpriseness as my sister and best friend SHOCKED me and surprised me for my birthday with a ticket to see Lily Tomlin last night, when i somehow hadnt managed to know she was in town.

So anyway so I saw Lily's act live for the first time and it was FABULOUS. so um, yeah, that's goodness, and if anyone else loves Lily like I do, it's worth looking into to see if she'll be performing where you live anytime soon, because it is SOOOOO worth it. she rocks. it was amazing. there were lots of technical difficulties the first five mins with her mic, and she dealt with it sooo well, funny as heck, really good on her feet off the top of her head, and when all was fixed she jumped back into the show exactly where she left off. it was GREAT.

so i'm like the happiest person on earth right now, and i can only hope the same for y'all. so yeah, go see Lily Tomlin. It's wonderful. Definite peak experience. :)

peace out.

'k so either I'm just incredibly stupid or incredibly naive, but what exactly does "tipping the velvet" mean? I read in some newspaper review today that it refers to a sexual practice and well um, I hafta say I've never heard of it!

So, anyone more clued-in than I willing to spill the beans?

Pretty please?

Umm.... The Victorians had nicknames for most sexual acts. There is a reason some people giggle when the name 'Rosebud' comes up in Citizen Cane. :blush

Would it help if I added the phrase cunning linguist to the explanation of what "Tipping the Velvet" actually means?

As it's a British release it will be in Region 2. I'm not sure exactly which other parts of the world are also Region 2 I just know that Britain is. And I was referring to non-UK residents specifically only because they won't get to see it unless the series is sold to a station in their country. So this is a way for them to get to see it. I apologise for any confusion I may have caused. I'm just really not a good poster I always have to go back and explain my posts. :(

And Eire Scully I LOVE Mrs Doyle. Two of my favourite Mrs Doyle moments. 1. When Father Ted gets up in the middle of the night and she's waiting there with a pot of tea. 2. When she's trying to get down from the window and keeps falling. LOL.

Sex on British TV - article (edit - and PHOTOS)

Postby tyche » Mon Oct 07, 2002 11:26 am

An article in my paper today mentioned Tipping the Velvet. Here's the relevant bit:

Quote:
The latest drama to follow these rules (and to benefit from a bit of good, old-fashioned controversy) is Tipping the Velvet, with its promise of raunchy lesbian action for all the family. In fact, the sex scenes are touchingly traditional. Andrew Davies has commented that for the first time in his career, he's had to tone down what was in the book.

Tipping the Velvet (Victorian slang for cunnilingus) is postmodern prurience. There's a new ad for a mobile phone that shows a twentysomething man more embarrassed to be caught with an unfashionable mobile than watching porn in a hotel bedroom. Nowadays, it's considered far stranger to be furtive about sexual voyeurism than simply come out and say that you like watching girls getting it on in corsets. Andrew Davies squares the circle of BBC guidelines with the desire to give the audience a raunchy ride by simultaneously conforming to and mocking the conventions of TV sex.

Wheee. It was pretty interesting - but I'm going to leave it to someone to talk about it :-P. I only began watching it about half way through, so I wouldn't be able to give a decent account about it.

But I'm annoyed at the end! Why couldn't they just let it go on for three hours?! LOL. Atleast it will stretch out, and I will have something to look forward to, now that they've stopped showing Buffy Season Five repeats on Sky.

:bounce wooooooooo. I've never watched bbc dramas before, but I tuned in especially for this one - the best decision I've made in some time :) .

it was excellent. the portrayal of the love between Kitty and Nan was very natural and didn't seem forced at all. the inevitable reaction from Nan's family was portrayed well also.

I am looking forward to the next 2 installments (especially after the cliffhanger and teaser for next week).

I'm glad to see that Andrew Davies has lived up to his promise of much smut, and hope that this trend continues (we still havn't seen the Victorian sex toys ;) )

if you havn't seen it yet, i would strongly recommend it (if you missed it I captured it and may be able to post a link in the next few days - no promises).

Postby walker » Wed Oct 09, 2002 6:49 pm

Okay, I'm far too tired to get into my own views on the show but here is the BBC's TV Critics review of Tipping The Velvet.

-------------------------

This Victorian tale of forbidden love proved both lavish and fascinating.

Heroine Nan came to a slow realisation about her true feelings after falling for stage performer Kitty - ironically a male impersonator.

The veil of secrecy surrounding a love which Queen Victoria thought did not exist was lifted for us, while the women faced ignorance and prejudice.

The drama openly depicted lesbian sex which should not raise hackles in this day and age. But it still threatens to overshadow the good work of this story.

------------------------

Personally I didn't think there was that much sex. What there was was crammed into the last about 10 minutes of the show. Time wise they can't have been on screen having sex for more than four minutes. The longest sex scene took about two minutes. This is just a guesstimate, I didn't actually time it. I could be persuaded to go back and time it if anyone's that interested. ;)

And one last thing before I hit the sack, I was shocked this review never mentioned the acting which was superb all round. Particular kudos to Rachel Stirling who plays Nan. She has such an expressive face that you really don't need to hear her narration to know what's going on in her head. Proper review tomorrow. Sleep now. :yawn

The acting was great. I liked the music hall scene where Kitty and Nan were singing together. LOL at the song "I'm Shy". You could really empathise with Nan. The love scenes were well done.

Saw the trailer for Ep 2 which looks a lot more racey,Nan naked painted gold.

Tipping the Velvet review

Postby tyche » Thu Oct 10, 2002 2:45 am

I saw Rachael Stirling interviewed on Richard & Judy last night, and I must say that she dealt pretty well with their silly questions ast to how you cope with doing a lesbian love scene when you're straight. She did say that she and Keeley Hwes had a stiff drink before doing their first love scene, though.

I haven't had a chance to watch the first ep yet - had to tape it b/c I was out - but here's a review from The Guardian:

media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,7493,809006,00.html

And the ratings good - probably helped by the media 'controversy' (people in Victorian times had sex shock! Even lesbians!)

media.guardian.co.uk/overnights/story/0,7965,809178,00.html

Willow worries that the gang won't like her anymore. Maybe she could try to rape one of them, leave a fiance at the altar, and tie up her friends so a demon could kill them. Then she'd fit right in.

Tipping the velvet

Postby Killin Joke » Fri Oct 11, 2002 8:20 am

'K, review time ! As could have been expected with my kind of (bad) luck, something just had to go wrong this wednesday, but I hope (still have to check and am afraid to do so) that my mum successfully managed to do some damage control. What happened ? Well, I was getting my hopes up, longing to see this series in impatient anticipation, from as soon as some sweet kitten mentioned it would be shown on BBC2, a channel I can see. Time crawled closer, and on sunday I carefully programmed the VCR BUT there was some confusion about the time from the start, since publicity said it started at 21:00, the site did so too, but my TV guide stated: 22:00 What to do ? Uch, sucker that I am, picked 21 (I mean, the BBC was gonna be right, right... Right...) Instead of playing better safe than sorry, this loser gambled and forgot all about the hour of time difference. /stupid, stupid, stupid/ I was yelling "Oh, fuck me !" to myself in the kitchen. Luckily no one of the other students were in there with me. LOL So, I set into motion the emergency plan: called my grandmother to tape it for me, but, I had a gut feeling that wouldn't work, because the last time she taped something for me, there was major disturbance on screen, when I popped the tape in my VCR. And yes, turns out her tv channels and VCR channels aren't atuned, all screwed up.

So I called my mum, and asked to push the record button again, if the VCR stopped an hour early. Hope she did ok...

Anyway, on to the good stuff, the "Essence" (brilliant Lucinda Williams album, BTW -> Lonely girls...)

Good goddesses, England ROCks ! Oh, I so luv the English ;) Bringing us Bad Girls and now this: standing ovation !

I agree: it's probably a bit over-hyped as far as the sex-part's concerned. I caught myself thinking after half an hour: when are they gonna get it on ? Not in the annoyed "Get it on already !" way, coz the story was far too great for that, just: you know ;) Of course I only saw one ep. There are still 2 more I found out today (bit disappointed, since I expected 13 installments or something: yes, I'm greedy that way).

Actors: brilliant, with beautiful expressing features, delivering us humour, honest emotions...

Plot: Let's just say I wanna read Sarah Water's book now. It was wonderful to see how the relationship between the two women unfolds before our very eyes. It's subtle, from fan adoration, to friendship, love. Everything at a nice pace, no rush, realistic... Whedon should take notes.

Technical things: atmosphere ! The manner in which it started: the camera movements, the lightning, the music, how everything fits together to create this gorguous romantic tale... I was sold immediately.

Symbolism: I knew there was a reason why a red rose is my favourite flower (while I'm not particularly fond of flowers in general). Also: oyster: I don't fancy them, like the rest of my family does, but baby, these things will never be the same. First there were the "sassy eggs", now this... What else is left in store for us ? ;)

Ending: Ooh, I so felt Nan's pain... You instantly take to this character, because you see her evolve, change so much, while still remaining herself. I mean: she starts off as this shy, innocent girl, but gradually she totally blossoms open. Uch, totally hated her sister (luckily mine isn't as narrow-minded), but her parents seemed sweet enough (of course they don't know everything about their daughter...yet).

Does anyone know how the story ends ? I know, I'm bad, but spoilers would be highly appreciated. I don't wanna risk another Buffy débacle... Somehow I think that's impossible, but you never know. ;)

"The Hours"

Postby Zahir al Daoud » Sat Oct 19, 2002 2:43 pm

According to the latest issue of Premiere magazine, Julianne Moore is playing a desperately unhappy housewife in a film called The Hours and during the course of the story she finds herself attracted to a neighbor, played by Toni Collette. They are supposed to kiss, which Ms. Moore described as "nice."

I should mention I've had a bit of a "thing" for Toni Collette since seeing her in Muriel's Wedding and Cosi. She's probably best known as the mom in Sixth Sense (You can see her full frontal btw in 8 1/2 Women).

Just FYI
