The Court of the Lion: A Novel of the T'Ang Dynasty by Eleanor Cooney and Daniel Altieri

It's a 1000 page historical novel full of politics, mind games, and intrigue. I first read it in the summer of '91, and I think I've read it 4 or 5 more times since then. I can't get enough. My favorite character is the eunuch Kao LiShih. I can only hope to strive to have as much honor as he did.

What is the one thing in your life that you are the most proud to have accomplished?

Hmmm: I've already answered this question ("finishing my doctorate, after 12 years, and my ex leaving me"), so I'll answer something different this time.

I'd say it's a tie: between climbing Mount Whitney (14,496 feet tall), way back . . . (*cough*not sayin' when*cough*), and breaking up a fist-fight :punch (between two men---that's 5'5" me pushing them apart, amidst the swingin' fists :paranoid) in 2004.

GG Sorta like---these are my physical accomplishments, when the doctorate all about my Big Ol' Brain! :crazy Out

No lyin' now ;-): what's the biggest fish you've ever caught? Size and variety? When, where, and on what? (Release, eat, or stuff&mount?)

It was a red snapper, when I was about 8 or 9, I think. On a boat in Florida, I guess in 1981 or 1982? We were going to cook it for dinner but forgot it in the trunk of our rental car. Smelly.

Sally! Weren't you a cutie!!

For really important things, I need a plan or else my inherent laziness and procrastination will get in the way.

Unstructured time for most other things and especially for vacations. The best vacations I've ever had were the ones when we jumped into the car and just drove with no particular destination in mind.

Well, I don't actually remember, but I've been told that when I was very very little (about 2-ish I think), my brothers used to get me to swear whenever they did, so if one of us got into trouble, then all of us would get into trouble.
*Shrugs* Seems like insane boy logic to me :crazy

Where (& when) was your best vacation?

Too many to count. I know I've broken my right wrist at least 6 times total. Mostly in sports related incidents. Once required surgery to put a screw in it.

Have you ever needed surgery and for what?

Two! My favorite item of clothing is my fuschia Falcon Ridge Folk Festival t-shirt, which is probably obvious to all my friends because I wear it all the damn time. And I needed surgery on my lower back, which I had in February 2005 to remove a herniated disc and part of the vertebrae. (I think so, anyway - under the influence of anaesthesia I asked the surgeon to take pictures of my spine while it was open, but I don't think he did it. So I lack proof. But whatever they did, I feel a whole heck of a lot better.)

Have you ever punched someone, and if so, who and why?

Yes. 2 people. First was my brother. We fought a lot in our teens and, like, you know, boys can be such jerks! Totally!! We're not talking face punches...more like a solid jab to the arm, but he always started it.

Second person, high school (I was such an angry teenager)- girls bathroom in the cafeteria. Don't remember why we fought, but I do remember giving her a black eye and me getting suspended for 3 days. Such bad behavior for little Catholic school girls.

Worst case scenario - WW3 breaks out and the nukes start flying. Are you running toward or away from ground zero (where the bomb is actually going to hit)?

2, my dad.
3, either my sister or closest friend #2.

but if really _things_,

1, to have money.
2, to have an education.
3, to have the mind that i have (even though sometimes it's lazy).

What's your favorite emoticon?

pair of jeans. bought three of them (diff styles) in one go. not that nice in retrospect. think each cost me 99 AUD.

but the most expensive in terms of money spent and usage: a FCUK slim black tie (AUD 50) but oooh, so sleek, so worth it! :D!

Yes, I am responsible for building campfires when we go camping because they catch and continue to burn. Same with the fireplace fires.

Most of our furniture are made with oak, and some with "alerce" (Fitzroya cupressoides) which is a soft, reddish-brown wood (it's a native species, here)

I get incredibly fidgety then I glare and growl at all the other drivers in my vicinity, because it's all their fault anyway, and I try desperately not to chew on the steering wheel. I'm getting all fidgety now just thinking about it. Grrrr.

I take a really deep breath & let it out slowly and remind myself that I have a choice: I can be late for an urgent appointment and really agitated and upset, or I can be late for an urgent appoinment and calm. The choice always seems easy after the reminder.

What is something specific that you have done (that has been really helpful) to pull yourself back up out of a really sad time?
