The Travelin' Thread

Postby SySnootles » Wed Jun 16, 2004 12:48 pm

My beloved will be heading out on a month long road trip in July. We'll be hitting many east coast states, and a couple of southern ones. I know summer is peak travel time, and I was wondering if any other Kittens are hitting the road. I also thought this would be a good opportunity for travel tips, must-see attractions, and traveling stories of yore.

Perhaps regional Kittens would be able to help along the wandering Kittens with accomodation suggestions (i.e.. do NOT stay at this hotel...), or even tips for avoiding traffic.

What say you, Kittens? Can we count on eachother to get the most of our traveling experiences?

I´m going to Denmark for two weeks in August. I´ll start out near Legoland and from there I will ride my bicycle hauling my little tent and luggage with me to the east coast and then to the south towards the island Romo.

Road trip sounds good about now. If I could justify it I so would take one. If fact, if this year continues like it has I may just pack up and go.

In the past I have taken short trips, touristy type things. Gotta love being a tourist. If you end up on the west coast shoot me a line, I’ll provide info on where to stay, visit and all that good stuff.

Have fun!

P.S. Garfield, looking for some company on that bike trip? Have bike will travel. :p

In terms of good and bad routes in the south...

Unless you are specifically stopping in Charlotte (NC), avoid driving through the city, esp. around rush hour times. Half the major roads are under construction, and congestion's really awful 'cause so many people commute from the suburbs into the city to work. Our interstate loop around the city (I-485) is only half built (doh) :p Oh, and the general verdict is nobody around here can drive.

Ah well. I hate to be a downer, but I thought I'd put out the heads up. (Note to any Charlotteans reading this--I'm a local, lol, so I have the right to complain a little! ;P)

If it's traffice you seek to avoid, then i would suggest for you to avoid manhattan entirely. the rumors about the hell-ish traffic are true. not to say it's impossible to manuver, but it'd be a challenge...oh, and word of advice on the hotel...if it looks sleazy...then it is. there's no false fronts here about that.

if you need any tips, just let me know...

Thanks for the info gals... I don't necessarily mind sitting in traffic, but I would like to do more productive (and less gas-wasting) things on my vacation.

As for hotels, yeah, that's what I've heard. No places with shared bathrooms. I would feel like I was in the dorms again!

If one wanted to stay near NYC, but not in it, I suppose New Jersey would be a good idea, no? What city would be best to stay in? Newark? Jersey City? Bayonne? Union City? Darn my family and their lack of east-coast ties!

I colleague of mine has recommend me a online booking website www.gaylodging.com. However I would like to know more opinions and ideas if you have them.

Thank you for your help

Hey all,

for any Aussie Kittens out there, I'll be heading up to Brisbane on 3rd July for this year's QC (Queer Collaborations). It's an annual conference run by the queer dept of NUS (National Union of Students). I'll be there with my gf and 5 other uni friends for the week, arriving Sunday 4th July and leaving Saturday morning, 10th July.

If anyone will be there, let me know... send me one of those msg thingies, or you can add me to MSN with pixie_muso@hotmail.com.

wouldn't stay in union city or newark...well, those two places can get sketchy...bayonne is a bit far off from the city...as for JC, well, depends on the area you're looking at...try secaucus...lots of hotels there...

and trust me on the traffic...even if you don't mind sitting in traffic, looking at the same light for 45 minutes and moving only 5 inches can get old real quick.

Hi Axel1980!

Although I live in England, I have never stayed in London. One thing I am aware of, though, is that hotels are VERY expensive - I am talking 80 pounds a night for a not-so-decent place.

If you are coming in the Summer you might want to try places that normally provide student accommodation during term - I've heard that some universities let their rooms during the holiday period.

Sorry I can't be more specific. Like I said, I've never stayed there myself!

Good luck looking!:pride

hey catie...

yeah traffic around these parts can be a bitch. repeat after me... "i believe in the power of public transportation"

ok so it can be a bitch sometimes too, but it'll save you a LOT of time around NYC.

as far as hotels go... yeah, secaucus is a good bet... you can also give me a call if you want. (trish has my #) my gf has been looking around a bit for you guys and i think she compiled a list for me.

i'm usually around in the evenings.. thursdays are the most reliable though.

Good luck!

i second the notion of public transportation. metrocards can be your best friend when going cross town in the middle of the day...or any time of the day...depending on how long you're going to be in the city you may want to get a 1 or 7 day fun pass (to be shared between the two of you), as for hotels, i'm not sure what your budget is, i'm not one for budget hotels, so i'm not sure i can be of help there.

take a look at some of this, maybe it'll spark interest:

www.newyorkled.com/citypass.htm

www.mta.info/nyct/subway/index.html - definitely check this...the subway changes it seems on an hourly basis

oh yeah, and definitely check out the big apple double decker bus...they're always good for some tourist pics.

if you need...trish knows how to find me...

edited to add - don't forget your student ID's - those are always good for discounts at certain places.

I'll be driving into PA to mole*ahem* I mean pick up Mikah :whistle , then continuing to Chicago. Am I insane? Of course I am. :crazy It'll be Wizard Universe Con for me in August.

You guys are awesome. :kiss

I was checking online booking services and I came across a 4-star hotel in Newark for $69 a night. This obviously sounds like an awesome deal, and I'd love to jump on it, but since everyone has been saying Secaucus, I was wondering if Newark would be decent. I know it's a big city and all, and has something of a reputation, but this is just so appealing sounding. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately it's through hotwire.com, so I won't know the name of the hotel until I book it. I don't like that... :mad

I thought the "Moonlight Rising" thing was in the Catskills, NY... Friar Tuck, wasn't it? Would that be considered a 4-star hotel?

Friar Fuck a.k.a. the Overlook Hotel from hell, right in the middle of a countryside where the roads keeps growing longer as you drive your car down them, surely that cannot be a 4 star place? Unless it is 4 out of 40 and even then they must have bought someone to get that many stars.

trish -

so how do you like the states? we have a bunch of maps, and random stuff for the both of you to help you around the city...give me a call, or drop me a line before you guys get here so i can somehow get this stuff to you...

also, wnated to know, if you guys are looking to stay for more than a few days in the area, and budget is what you're looking for, why not stay at a place like homestead (they're suites hotels that's meant for "long-term" stays.) - thought y ou may want to look into it...

Hey

The states all smell the same I swear, so besides the license plates and the odd smell I am having a wonderful time, Summer Fest is great.

Were only staying for 3 days so I am not sure if a place like that is worth looking into..but maybe..

Yeah, all the maps and shyt would defiantly be helpful.
