Bleh that's a very empty article with absolutely no good points. I don't think most of us here think it's wrong for young women to attach themselves to Tatu, but they should realize they aren't the target and monetarily they aren't a significant group. They aren't ambiguous in their sexuality, they aren't gay, they aren't bi, they have boyfriends, their relationship is just for publicity. I love my friends too, you know.

This whole passage confused me:

Quote:
Some have accused tATu’s manager, Ivan Shapovalov, of marketing pedophilia, which he himself called "an underserved market." Shapovalov’s comment was brought to the forefront when tATu's English-speaking debut-single “All The Things She Said” and album “200 km/h in the Wrong Lane” succeeded in the charts. While a younger generation of Britons welcomed tATu, the older ones, especially the conservative ones on British television and in the newspapers, claimed that tATu is a "threat" to their children--but these are the same people who are against allowing almost any portrayals of homosexuality (or bisexuality) in television or film.

Shapovalov was partly responsible for making this accusation possible by some of his statements, but people seem to forget that these were intended to create media attention (although the strategy clearly backfired). But his words were also put into a misleading context, and then cunningly used by many as an excuse to openly criticize this group without fear of being labeled as bigots.

How can his words be put into a misleading context? Why should anyone in the gay community support a man who thinks there is a need to cater to pedophiles? Why? Why should afterellen stand there and actually defend a man who thinks that? This is beyond disturbing. We have enough problems with people thinking homosexuals and pedophelia are intertwined, without our own community going out of their way to excuse that kind of statement. It was for publicity, says the "article," well ... duh!

To answer Rei, yes anything that helps young girls with their own sexuality is fine by me.

I just don't think it's giving other people a positive view of gays or any kind of opinion about gays. The thing with this kind of display is that it has to be backed up by other things to be meaningful. Take the recent MTV thing with Madonna. Madonna and Christina have other examples of supporting gay rights and gay people, not just kissing each other for schock value and titilation. Britney on the other hand followed it with some not such nice comments and that certainly taints her motivations for me. Tatu has not followed up their stunts with any meaningful support, as far as I can see. I would love for them to dump their manager, and show us what's really there.

Russian duo t.A.T.u flops in Tokyo

Russian duo t.A.T.u flops in Tokyo

TOKYO Dec 4 - The controversial Russian teenage female pop duo t.A.T.u has failed to make its mark on Japan's mega music market as they sang at a half-empty baseball dome on their maiden concert tour here this week.

``t.A.T.u. fails to explode, fizzles out,'' a headline read in the influential daily Asahi Shimbun Thursday after the teenage girls drew no more than 25,000 each to their two concerts at the 50,000-seat Tokyo Dome on Monday and Tuesday.

Kyodo Tokyo Inc., which promoted the 500-million yen (US$4.6-million) tour, and is reported to have made a loss, admitted failure.

``It was hardly a promotional success but we have gained a lot by learning such things as the production method of Russian artists,'' the major Japanese concert promoter said in a statement.

``We faced a great many difficulties for the tour. They were wide-ranging and included differences with Western nations in artist promotion and production,'' Kyodo Tokyo said.

Lena Katina, 19, and Julia Volkova, 18, who have crafted their image as lesbian rebels by kissing each other in public and agitating crowds, cancelled an open rehearsal at the last minute on Sunday.

They started the first concert 50 minutes behind schedule and stopped the show after only 50 minutes, drawing boos from some spectators, according to press reports.

Touts tried to sell 7,500-yen (US$70) tickets for about 4,000 yen outside the dome while they went on an Internet auction for 2,500 yen, the reports said.

One sports tabloid put the promoter's loss at more than 100 million yen.

The show was complete with t.A.T.u antics as the duo kissed each other after the first song, ``All Things She said,'' and used some 150 Japanese schoolgirl extras.

The Asahi newspaper called their performance ``straight'' with solid techno-pop melodies and ``lucid, emotional voices.''

``As their music is rather orthodox, they have drawn ordinary music fans of different age groups. It was unfortunate for music that they were associated with such a series of unscrupulous sales gimmicks and commotions. - AFP

Another uneasy feeling

Postby Gatito Grande » Mon Dec 22, 2003 8:37 pm

[Mods, please move this if you can find a more appropriate thread]

This may have been discussed elsewhere, but I haven't seen it. Has anyone heard the song "Some Girls Dance with Women" by J.C. Chasez (a member of N' Sync, IIRC)? I hardly trust my hard-of-hearing ears, but the chorus sounds something like this:

Some girls dance with women

Knowing it gets them attention.

I want to get in with them--

Pass me a drink and let's go.

What a load of bull----! :rage

Yeah J.C., these women dancing together: it's all about you. (Not!)

What a d*ckhead! :mad

GG Anybody else heard this song? Am I hearing it correctly? WTF??? :spin Out

Tatu Dump Manager And Moniker

2/13/2004

Russian pop act Tatu have ditched their moniker and svengali manager Ivan Shapovalov - accusing him of being uninterested in developing their talent.

Bandmates Julia Volkova and Lena Katina are sick of being the subject of scandalous rumours, designed by Shapovalov to increase their profile, and want to concentrate on their music.

The All The Things She Said duo were originally marketed as teenage lesbian lovers but it was soon revealed that both girls are straight.

Volkova says, "He spends his time thinking up scandals instead of planning our artistic work. I'm sure our fans would rather hear new songs and new albums than new scandals."

As Shapovalov owns the copyright to the name Tatu, the girls will change their name for any future recordings.

So does this mean that they won't use the fake-lesbian angle anymore?

I always thought it was a bit of a shame that they weren't lesbians, but that wasn't the issue for me... their music wasn't bad, either.

Willow: Hey Buff. One more thing. Buffy: Yeah? Willow: I’m gay. Buffy: Okay, Will. Xander owes me ten bucks.

Well good for them, I hope they will succeed in making it on their own and it will be interesting to see in how they handle themselves.

This website has information about a proposed animated movie:

The information predates the news of Shapovalov's firing.

'Lesbian' pop star pregnant

Julia Volkova, who makes up one half of supposedly lesbian pop group Tatu, has admitted that she's pregnant.

The 19-year-old, who once said she'd like to marry her singing partner Lena Katina, said the baby was due at the end of the summer. Speaking to Russian daily newspaper Zhizn, Volkova said: "I don't know if I am going to have a girl or a boy and I don't want to know before it is born."

Father of the child is long-term boyfriend Pasha Sidorov, a martial arts expert who already has a wife and daughter. Speaking about their relationship Volkova said: "Obviously we will not be celebrating a wedding."

The girls who soared to number one in the UK on the back of massive publicity over their alleged lesbian relationship and steamy on-stage antics have said they will keep working together. Katina said she would wait until Julia was ready before continuing their pop career and did not want to bring in a substitute for her pregnant colleague.

The pair split from founding manager Ivan Shapovalov in February and are now said to be working with new producer Boris Rensky.
