Gia Carangi

Postby SexyAlmostEvil541 » Sun May 02, 2004 3:11 pm

Just wondering if anyone else is familiar with the late Gia Carangi. She was a supermodel in the late 70's and early 80's, openly lesbian, who dioed at the age of 26 from complications due to AIDS. She was one of the first females in the US that AIDS claimed. She struggled with insecurities and a heroin addiction that was ignored/tolerated/almost ncouraged by the modeling industry. She was an incredible o woman who could have come so far had she not been seized by addiction.

Everything I know about her is due to the movie featuring Angelina Jolie. I searched the web for further info but I didn't find anything else worth knowing. If you know some dedicated site, please let me know.

The movie is very good, thought I don't think it was very accurate. It does, however, give you a pretty good idea of how she was and how far into addiction she got. She was just a scared girl and could never find the love she so desperately needed. The book by Stephen Fried is excellent. It is called Thing Of Beauty, and you can find copies of it on eBay or at Amazon. There is also a documentary out called The Self-Destruction of Gia Carangi. I purchased that but havent received it yet. I have seen copies of it as well on eBay.

Also check out The Gia Carangi Foundation which began in 2002 to help young people with ANY issues, including drungs, HIV and AIDS.

I think she would have been proud of that.

I saw the movie, which was excellent though, as you pointed out, not exactly accurate. I did a lot of research on Gia after I saw it. It kinda haunted me for so long, that she'd had the love of this woman, Linda (played wonderfully by Elizabeth Mitchell), and still couldn't get herself together, even with her partner's help. Finding out that the character of Linda was actually a composite of Gia's girlfriends, and not an actual person, made everything make more sense.

Still, a haunting movie and very sad.

I really liked the "Linda" charecter as well, and I loved the movie as a whole. I have heard that Stephen Frieds book has been optioned as a movie, though I cant think of anyone else who could play Gia as well as Anjelina Jolie did.

Yesterday, I received a video tape filled with Gia footage. It had the 20/20 interview in wich she was reported to be high on heroin, the ABC special Vanished: Falling Star, the E! True Hollywood Story, plus some actual home movie footage of Gia herself, also interviews with Fancesco Scavullo, Rob Fay, Stephen Fried, Kathleen Sperr and Gia's brothers.

I especially liked the home movies,m which showed Gia as Gia and not as the supermodel everyone identified her with. She definitely seemed more comfortable with her androgony and even appeared a little "butch". She was adorable. The home video shows her laughing, dancing, talking about her plans to become a cinemetographer. She was such an incredible woman, and it was bittersweet watching that, knowing that, at the time it was filmed, she had only a few years to live. Just sad.

Well, I remember having heard that a young actress named Mila Kunis was in that movie, playing a young Gia. A very cool German girl sent me some footage of the actors of That '70s show, of their early days, and she asked me if I saw the movie. So, she sent it to me as a whole.

While I was waiting for the tape to get over here, I did a couple of net searches on Gia, and found some info on the movie, like the fact that Linda was actually a mix of Gia's girlfriends, and a bunch of other cool facts.

When I saw the movie, I was amazed by Angelina Jolie. I never, for some reason saw her more serious movies, so, when I saw this one, I bawled my eyes out.

I got so upset, because as hard as she tried, the drugs always pulled her back into the darkness. Add to that that AIDS was still something relatively "new" and that they didn't know how it would respond to the treatments they knew.

It's really a tragic story. And, I, for one, know that it touched me deeply.

Gia was an interesting movie for me.

I watched it backwards.

I caught like the last 15 minutes of it and was struck by Angelina Jolie's acting and the story. Of course I had no idea what movie it was. (btw one of my BIGGEST pet peeves, movies that don't put the title of the movie at the end!!)

A few weeks later I caught it again, this time to see the last hour or so. Of course this time I got lots of exposed flesh. I finaly figure out what movie it was and caught it again from the begining.

It was really a good flick and a really sad story. Gia was loved, beautiful and had money, and was still a mess.

I thought Elizabeth Mitchell was wonderful and after watching I wanted to see more of her, well, more of her acting, got kinda of an eyeful of her in Gia.

Of course Angelina Jolie was wonderful. What got me the most is that thoughout the whole movie she looked like she wanted to die, and when she was dying she looked so scared. No wonder she got an Emmy nomination for this and a won a Golden Globe.

This was a great movie.

It was a great movie and maybe I've seen it twice, but I just find it way too depressing to rewatch. I've often said I can watch the hours over and over again and actually feel hopeful. Gia is a complete downer for me. It is an interesting story and a shame that we lost this young woman.

Yup, I too have watched Gia and I too have a big crush on Angie.... well who doesn't? :eyebrow Its a great film and both AJ and the lady who plays Linda (I forget....) are very moving and very much into their characters. As for Gia herself, it is a shame we lost this beautiful but it is a testiment as to what damage drugs can do if you get into them far enough.
