Million For Marriage petition

Postby El Gato » Thu Feb 19, 2004 7:03 pm

Dear Friends - I checked this before posting. I am a Massachusetts Notary Public, & parent. I also believe ALL Americans are born with Equal Rights. If you want to help - please consider signing this petition. Thank you.

Dear Friend,

I believe that ALL Americans, including gays and lesbians,

deserve the rights, responsibilities, and

privileges that come with marriage. And right now, we have an unprecedented opportunity to make that

dream a reality. Please, join me in adding your voice to a

million voices raised in support of civil marriage for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples at

http://www.MillionForMarriage.org .

This week, it's especially important that we reach 200,000 signatures - right-wing extremists are lobbying Congress right now during their so-called "Marriage Protection Week." Please,

help drown out their anti-GLBT voices!

Sign it, people. Even yours truly, the apathetic anti-activist signed it.

I signed the petition. This is the comment I put with it.

Although I am a British citizen, the fundamental principle is true no matter where it lies in the world. It is not a question of whether Gay people should be allowed to marry, rather the question is do we as a society have the right to discriminate against a section of society, making marriage not a celebration of love and commitment between two people, but a privilege of birth, regardless of the love between those involved. This, I believe, is an affront to marriage.

Gay people have the right to marry, not because they are gay but because they are people. This is purely an issue of equal rights and a so-called free country stopping discrimination in it's homeland.

Massachusetts has done a brave thing. It is the honourable thing. It is the right thing.

Somewhere up in the sky, God has looked at Massachusetts and said "About Time".

Million For Marriage

Postby Sally McFine » Sat Feb 21, 2004 1:23 pm

Kittens, thanks for signing the petition and for forwarding to friends. Million For Marriage is a project of HRC, where I work (I'm on the team that does field and online organizing).

I'm beta-testing a new feature that allows people to create their own personal pages complete with picture and blurbs, and then to email their address book to get friends to take action and donate. If you've ever donated to anyone who has done the AIDS ride, walk, marathon - it's similar.

Any kittens want to help test it out? I'm the one who reviews all the new pages and it would really make my day/week/month to get to review some pages with W/T pictures. :) If you want to create a page, you can at:

We do have a long way to go. But still... it's a start.

I signed the petition, but I was wondering: is there a way we can view it as well? I would love to read other people's comments when they signed the petition.

I signed it too.

Can you believe that we have to sign petitions and jump through hoops just to have the same rights as everyone else???

That all we want is to be able to share our love with those around us and those that we are close to, be able to take care of each other and celebrate the kind of union that every straight couple has, that love is love regardless of whether it is between a man and a woman, a man and a man, or two women. That a gay person is a PERSON thus should have the rights as any other person who isn't gay.... who love each other, and are committed to each other, and want to spend the rest of their lives with each other.

Love is love and love should always be celebrated, not stopped.

Very eloquent paragraph there, Renee.
