I think this is the first fic I've read where the little kids act more natural instead of with the perfect, adorable, "kids-say-the-darndest-thing" cuteness. (not that there's anything wrong with that). I like it, but what a way to make a first impression.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I kinda wanted the not all the kids get along like Tara and Alex do type thing. I actually played around with how I was gonna have all the kids act and everything for a bit before I settled on this. I wasn't sure how it was gonna work, but I guess it worked well. Thanks for the feedback

Okay, this update was just...not fair. I mean, I wanted to put these two little boys in the corner or something, give Willow and Tara a chance to talk.
If you thought this chapter wasn't fair then you are really really gonna think this one isn't fair

it seems like Tara is taking on a lot of Mom type responsibilities. I wonder what's going on with that.
You will find out what's going on very soon
thanks for the feedback.

Hopefully she can find some down time and spend it getting to know Willow a little better.
Don't worry there will be plenty of getting to know each other
I just need to have some filler chapters to get everything to make sense first. Actually I'm not quite sure if what I just said made sense. Hm. Anyways thanks for the feedback

I agree, with Shelby, you did really well with the sibling banter and saying things by not saying them directly we get a better picture of Tara's home life too.
Thank you
You will find out everything that is going on soonish. Within the next couple chapters. Thanks for the feedback

I just realized that I totally missed commenting on this update. Still really wondering about what's up with Tara taking on the motherly role. But I liked her interaction with her siblings and how helpful Willow is being. Hopefully the girls will get some alone time soon.
It's quite alright
They will get alone time soon and everything will start to make sense within the next couple chapters, thanks for the feedback

Very interesting. On one hand, there doesn't seem to be tension about Willow coming home with them (did she call Giles?) but there does seem to be a lot of tension about dad. I can't detect whether he's an abusive drunk who moved out or a jerk who was abusive and also is now dead or what. I guess we'll find out more (at least I hope so).
You will find out everything. I'm still trying to get things worked out on how I exactly want them played out. Thanks for the feedback

Whoa, I need some kind of intervention! I read this story, loved it, contemplated my f/b and didn't post a damn thing!
Wait! This is YOUR fault for not being telepathic . . . . .
Okay, my apology stands!
Haha my apology for not being telepathic
But in all fairness I had been reading your story and neglecting on feedback as well so I guess all is even

Tommy was both annoying and said. The comment "way to sound like Dad" and Tara's shamed reaction makes it clear to me that the Maclays have some abuse issues going on. It really was sad to feel that echo and you did it well, no melodramatic bathos, but subtle and poignant.
Thank you
Chapter 11:Willow, Amber, and Alex had sat in complete silence for the last 10 minutes. They all tried to hear what was going on upstairs, but no noise could be heard.
"Um," Willow finally spoke. Although besides um she didn't know what to say. Suddenly the front door opened.
"Hello," a cheery voice sounded.
"Mommy," Alex jumped off his stool and ran to the kitchen doorway just as a women appeared in it. Willow looked at Tara's mother. She was beautiful, in fact Tara looked like a younger version of her mother. The same dark blonde hair. The same blue eyes.
"Hey sweetheart," Ms. MaClay smiled down at Alex. She had two bags full of groceries in her arms. Her eyes went from Alex's to Willow's. "Hello there," she smiled. "You must be Willow."
"Oh Um yeah hi," Willow stood up. She was a little shocked that she knew her. "How did you know?"
Ms. MaClay smiled. "Beautiful red hair and green eyes. My daughter talks about you a lot." she walked past Willow and put the bags on the counter. She turned back to Willow and saw the smile on the girl's face.
"Willow was just helping me with my math," Amber said.
Ms. MaClay looked at Amber then back to Willow. "That's very nice of you, thank you. I am horrible at math," she giggled. "Where are Tommy and Tara?"
"Oh um," Alex looked at Amber as did Ms. MaClay. "What happened?" she asked.
"Well," Amber looked down at the books in front of her. "I um..."
"Mom," all eyes turned to Tara who was now standing in the doorway with Tommy. "Why're you home?"
"It was a slow day so Aly said I could just come home and if she needed me she'd call," Ms. MaClay said. "Where were you two?"
"Oh um," Tara looked at Tommy.
"I needed advice," Tommy blurted out. "See there's a girl and well I needed advice," he smiled at his mom. "Are there more groceries?" he asked pointing the bags.
"Yeah a couple," Ms. MaClay said.
"I'll go get them," Tommy smiled and ran out the front door.
"Okay well I'm gonna go take a shower, could you guys unload the groceries?" Ms. MaClay looked between her three children still in the room.
"Yes ma'am," Tara said as Alex and Amber nodded.
"Okay, make yourself at home," Ms. MaClay put her hand on Willow's shoulder and smiled.
"I will Ms. MaClay, thank you," Willow said.
"Please call me Erin," Ms. MaClay said and walked out the kitchen and up the stairs. Tommy came in just then with bags of groceries in his arms.
"Anymore?" Tara asked.
"Yeah," Tommy ran back out the front door.
"I'll unload," Tara said. "You guys start your homework," she looked at Amber and Alex who just nodded. Both seemed to not have much to say. Honestly Willow didn't either. Tommy had a complete turn around. He was fighting with them earlier then he stood up for them in a heartbeat.
"Are you still gonna help me Willow?" Amber asked.
"Wha?" Willow shook her head of her thoughts and looked at Amber. "Of course," Willow smiled at her.
"Oh by the way," Erin said coming back down the stairs. She looked through the kitchen doorway from the stairs. "Willow would you like to stay for dinner? I was thinking homemade tacos."
"Yay!" Amber and Alex cheered.
"What did I miss?" Tommy asked coming back into the house with a couple more groceries.
"Homemade tacos," Alex squealed with delight. Willow giggled.
"Sounds good," Tommy said.
"I'd love to stay," Willow said. "Just let me ask... Oh no," Willow's face dropped.
"What's wrong?" Tara asked.
Willow turned to her. "I forgot to call Uncle Giles to let him know I wouldn't be home right after school."
"Wouldn't he call if he was worried?" Tommy asked sitting the groceries on the counter and turning to Willow.
"I guess," Willow grabbed her phone out of her pocket. She groaned. "It's dead."
"Here," Tara pulled her phone out. "Use mine."
"Thanks," Willow grabbed her phone and dialed Giles number.
"Hello?"
"Uncle Giles."
"WILLOW!" The voice was loud and everyone jumped a little. Tara had know Giles since her freshmen year and had never heard him raise his voice. Even when the kids in the library were being loud and obnoxious. "I've been worried sick about you. I got home from work and you weren't here. I tried calling.."
"My phone is dead. I'm at Tara's. I'm really sorry."
"So you are okay?"
"Yes sir."
"Good. When are you coming home?"
"Well Tara's mom asked if I could stay for dinner. Is that okay?"
"If it's okay with you."
"Okay with me?" Willow was confused.
"Are you sure you are okay being around that many people?"
"Um," Willow looked around the room. Ms. MaClay was still standing on the stairs, obviously trying to make sure everything was okay. Amber was showing Alex something in a book, Tommy was putting groceries away, and Tara was staring at her. Willow hoped the conversation between her and Uncle Giles couldn't be heard. "I think I'll be okay," Willow whispered.
"If you need me to come get you, I will," Uncle Giles said.
"I know, thank you," Willow smiled. She really liked how protective her Uncle was being. She finally felt like she had a father.
"I want you home by 9, no later."
"Yes sir," Willow said. "Bye." She hung up the phone.
"Everything okay?" Erin asked.
"Yeah, he was just worried," Willow smiled at her. "I can stay."
"Good. I'll start cooking after my shower," Erin walked back upstairs.
Willow turned to Tara who had a look on her face that told Willow she heard the whole conversation. "So Amber," Willow looked away from Tara. "Are you ready for math?" Willow walked up to the girl.
"No, but I have no choice," Amber said. Willow laughed and sat down next to her.
-----------------------------------
The night had basically gone by in a flash. Erin, with the help of Tommy and Alex when they were done their homework, made dinner for everyone. Willow had spent quite a bit of time trying to teach Amber the ways of math. To Willow math was easy, but she knew that it wasn’t for other people and Amber was one of those people. Tara kept kind of quiet, but Willow understood. Something had happened in the MaClay family that was now out in the open. Although Willow wasn’t quite sure what the remark meant she had a couple ideas in her head and none were good.
Tara walked to her room. She knew that Willow probably had questions. Questions she wasn’t sure how to answer. She wanted Willow to know everything, but it wasn’t exactly the most easiest thing to talk about. Then again, the stuff Willow had told her probably wasn’t the most easiest thing to talk about either. Tara sighed and stepped into her room. She stopped at the sight in front of her. Willow was laying on her stomach sprawled out across Tara’s bed. The book that Tara had been reading was in her hands and she was skimming through the pages. Willow honestly was the most beautiful girl Tara had ever seen and she couldn’t keep her eyes off her. She looked so cute on her bed. She wanted to go over to the bed, kneel over Willow and kiss her. But sadly she knew that wasn’t going to happen.
Willow looked up and smiled. “Hey.”
“Hey,” Tara smiled back. “Sorry about that. My mom just wanted to ask me how the kids did. Her fear of a bad answer resulting in her asking you to leave the kitchen.”
“Its fine,” Willow sat up and put the book down on the bed. “I’ve never read this one. It sounds good.”
“You can borrow it when I’m done,” Tara walked over and sat next to Willow on the bed.
“Do they sell books like this here? Or do you have to order them?” Willow asked. She had completely forgotten about going and getting a new book.
“I had to order that one because I already read all the ones there,” Tara chuckled. “Mr. Daniels is the owner of the bookstore. He is gay so he has a section of books like this. He doesn’t find it fair that most bookstores don’t carry them. We should go there sometime. I mean,” Tara caught herself. “You should go there sometime.”
Willow smiled at her. “Will you go with me?”
Tara’s face lite up. “Of course.”
They fell into silence. They were both sitting crossed legged next to each other. Willow’s right knee almost touching Tara’s left. If one of them moved they would hit each other. Willow was hoping that Tara would move. Actually she was hoping Tara would put her hand on her cheek, move her head to look into her eyes and kiss her, but she highly doubted that was about to happen.
“So you have an hour before you have to be home,” Tara said.
Willow followed Tara’s gaze to a clock on her nightstand.“Yeah,” She really didn’t want to leave. “Tara,” she looked at the blonde. “You don’t have to answer, but..”
“You want to know what Amber meant when she said what she said today.”
“You don’t have to tell me,” Willow said.
“I know I don’t, but I will.” Tara took a deep breathe. “Where to begin."
