New Fic: Glowing in the Darkness

Postby Belli Bear » Tue Aug 31, 2010 1:45 am

I actually wrote this story in 2003 when I was around about 15/16. I've had it on my hard drive ever since and thought it was time to haul it out, I'm not editing as I go though because there is just so much my 22 year old mind sees that my 16 year old mind did not I'd have to change the whole story lol, so here it is! Enjoy!

Title: Glowing in the Darkness

Author: Belli Bear a.k.a. Bell

Feedback: puleeeeeaasee!

Summary: Without giving too much away, let us say that the Hellmouth is in full swing and with demons both human and other, can the girls find their way through the mess and towards eachother?

Rating: Overall I'm giving it a PG-13 for violence

Disclaimer: Joss and Mutant Enemy own all, blah blah blah.

Notes: This story deals with some of the more troublesome aspects of Tara's past, sometimes in graphic detail. It involves character death and a fair chunk of angst but as always, never fear, in the end the girls get it right.

CHAPTER ONE

They walked the dark streets searching for whatever evil was out in the night, Buffy didn’t know what made her choose to patrol on campus with Willow that night, the two had simply began walking and not stopped until they were at the gates of the university.

“So do you think we’ll get any vampy action tonight?” Willow smiled as she played with the book she held though her eyes were etched with slight worry.

“I doubt it; the hellmouth hasn’t been very hellmouthy lately…” Buffy’s words lingered when her eyes caught a small series of lights framing a window in the Stevenson building.

“Oooh!! Tinkley fairy lights! We should do that to our window Will!” A small smile crossed her face as she pointed to the window that was laced in small white lights.

Willow looked up from the ground that she was grazing with her shoe “I know that window! It’s pretty isn’t it?” Buffy couldn’t help but notice the knowing smile that played on Willow’s face.

“Very pretty indeed, um, new friend from class?” Buffy was as intrigued by who owned the window as she was by her friend knowing it.

“Her name’s Tara, she’s a friend from my wicca group.” Willow’s head dropped back to the ground but she didn’t lose the smile that had caught the slayer’s attention.

“Oh, okay.” Buffy was surprised she hadn’t heard of this friend before now “She nice?” she asked with honest curiosity.

“Tara? Yeah, she’s really nice. One of those rare ‘care for all’ kind of people” Willow finally looked up at Buffy and then at the window for a long while before speaking again “Buffy…”

But before Buffy could answer she was jumped upon by a newly risen vamp; one that she quickly dispersed of with a flip, roundhouse kick and quick stake to the heart against a tree.

“It’s so no fun when they’re that easy” Buffy half pouted as her hacker friend got back from behind the tree she had instinctively leapt to at the attack. “Sorry Will, what did you wanna say?” Buffy queried as she picked a piece of bark off the hacker’s shoulder.

“Right yes, the window. Buffy, when you do campus patrol, could you like, keep an eye on it?” Willow asked and then smiled at the slayer as she continued to pick miniscule pieces of bark from her shoulder.

“Sure Will” Buffy returned the smile as she finished inspecting her friends shoulder.

“It’s just, Tara’s special. She’s precious” Willow let the words slip out of her mouth without thought of editing but later praying the slayer wouldn’t read too far into them.

“I’ll keep her safe. I promise” Buffy smiled softly at the protective concern the small hacker showed the girl.

“I know you will” Willow almost inaudibly whispered more to herself then to the slayer as they continued to walk through the grounds leaving the window behind.

Tara looked up from the chem book she was trying hard not to fall asleep reading when she heard the gentlest of knocks against the hollow wooden frame of her dorm door. She opened it to be greeted by a smiling yet all too nervous Willow. “Am I disturbing you? Coz I know it’s late, I wasn’t going to come but then I walked past the building and I saw your window lights on and my legs just started moving. Now I’m not one to argue with the power of legs so I guess I just had to follow them, blame them if my knocking woke you.”

“Willow..” Tara couldn’t help but smile, she always found it so adorable when Willow babbled. “No, it’s o-okay. I was just catching up on some Chem, you didn’t wake me” Her smile continued through her sentence and she stepped aside to let Willow in.

“Chem, really? That’s important, do you want me to let you finish? I mean are you sure I’m not intruding?” Willow purposely controlled her sentence to cut off the verbal spewage she knew would come, she always babbled around Tara.

“No, really Willow it’s f-fine.” She smiled; determined to have Willow stay “I could use some company, chem w-was threatening to lull me to s-sleep and I was only on the third page” she frowned but then gave a soft lopsided smile at the sound of Willow’s giggle. “So!” Tara grinned knowingly “I'm thinking...You wanna do a spell?”

*****

Buffy kicked the door to her dorm room shut as she balanced four bags of take-out and drinks. “Okay so I wasn’t sure if you were eating and since I’ve just slayed I will definitely be eating for more than one so I kind of panicked and bought everything in the store but those weird blue thi-” Buffy paused and looked down at her best friend’s empty bed.

“Uh Will? Willow?” The slayer frowned Will said she’d meet me here when she left patrol. She was just about run out and search for Willow when her attention was drawn to a tiny flashing number on her telephone. Buffy dropped the takeout bags onto her bed and hit play “Hey Buffy! I’ve just gotten the urge to do some study so I’ll be at the library till late tonight, I know you probably got food but I’m thinking you can manage it on your own” The slayer rolled her eyes at being caught out. “So I’ll cya tomorrow okay? Loveyoubye!”

Buffy’s eyebrows rose at the quick goodbye but she shrugged it off as she flopped down on her bed and switched on her television, tearing into the first bag. “Okay Mr Wong, let’s see if your ten plate special is enough to defeat the chosen one!” She grinned at the cheesy slasher flick playing “And I’ll even let you join forces with Freddie Prince’s aesthetically pleasing acting for the added distraction factor”.

The slayer chuckled as the stars made another bad decision in their escape from the fisherman turned murderer “Oh Freddie… I’m so hooked.” Buffy looked around and sighed dramatically into her noodles “And yet again, no one is present to witness my gift”.

*****

As she slowly came down from her high Willow realized just how exhausted she really was. The better part of her energy had been used up in the spell and although it had been a success all she wanted to do was to curl up and sleep for the next ten years! Relaxing her back and using her stomach muscles to slowly lower herself to the ground she let out a breath and was just about to float away when Tara’s voice pulled her back

“W-Willow, you should use the bed. The carpets not very comfortable, you’ll get a sore back.” The blonde spoke softly so as to not startle the redhead.

Willow put on a pout and shook her head determinedly whilst stifling a yawn “No bed! Sleeeeepy! Carpet’s good.”

“But Willow it’ll hurt tomorrow” Tara tried a different tactic in her effort to coax the redhead to move to the bed.

Without opening her eyes Willow grumbled but got up in one swift movement, it was a little too swift and she soon felt herself falling. The sensation was replaced by an even better one when she felt Tara’s soft yet surprisingly strong arms grip her and move her to the mattress before turning off the light.

Willow surprised Tara when she pulled the blonde down beside her as she began to move away. Yawning again the redhead let out a half-audible “stay” before settling down farther into Tara’s unbelievably soft bed.

Tara was now currently wedged between the wall and Willow’s half-asleep body; it wasn’t that she was not enjoying the position. In fact it would’ve been very safe to say that she was downright loving it. Though that was part of the problem.

What if she fell asleep and subconsciously let her hands wonder with her mind? Could she even begin to think about the consequences of risking that?

Through her slumber Willow could feel the tension in the blonde’s body. Not exactly thinking anything other than it was what felt right Willow reached her arms around Tara and spooned the wiccan into her body. “Tar, you okay now?” The hacker let out in a very sleepy voice.

“I’m fine Willow” Tara smiled and let out in a soft tone “I’m glad you chose the bed” she quickly blushed at how the hacker could’ve taken the comment, quickly rushing in an explanation to save herself all the embarrassment she could Tara forced herself to control her stutter. “B-Because of your b-back. It could’ve gotten hurt.”

Her worries were put to rest however when she felt Willow grasp her tighter. She loved the immediate feeling of complete safety the redhead’s hold infused into her body; it allowed her to experience a most precious sensation of release.

But Tara was brought out of her thoughts by the hacker’s final words for that night “Nothing can hurt me here. I’m safe here.”

The blonde smiled again before allowing herself a little indulgence and snuggling deeper into Willow’s safe hold. She stayed like that for a few, long moments, simply savouring the feeling of completeness she felt whenever the small hacker’s breath tickled the back of her neck. Blinking her eyes one final time she sighed and finally let a peaceful and brilliant sleep claim her completely.

*****

As Willow groggily woke up from her deep sleep she realised two things, one: she was in the most comfortable bed she had ever slept in, and two: it wasn’t hers.

It was when she moved to stretch that she realised number three: she was holding someone. Slightly moving her hand she inwardly gasped A FEMALE SOMEONE!

Being still too scared to open her eyes Willow took a breath, mmmm honey…oh my God. There was only one person Willow knew that smelled that good. Letting a naughty smile grace her lips Willow took another deep breath as the previous night floated back into her brain and snuggled deep into Tara’s warm body. She wouldn’t let sleep take her again though; she wanted to be awake for every sweet and precious second of this morning.

After what she could’ve only guessed to be an hour of pure bliss the strong sunlight of day forced Willow to reluctantly open her eyes, though when she did she immediately kicked herself for not doing it sooner! There lying next to her, was Tara; angelically illuminated by the morning sunlight, sleeping softly, complete serenity flowing around her form with every new breath taken.

…She’s so beautiful when she sleeps Willow thought in complete awe as soon as her brain remembered how to think.

After a few minutes of simply watching the beautiful blonde take breath-in breath-out Willow pulled herself away from the mesmerizing movements and her mind once again fought to think Then there’s me! Ms. Drool n’ Snort! Willow smirked to herself at her well-known habit of drooling in her sleep.

Unfortunately it was at that precise moment that Tara decided to open her eyes. When she saw the look of mild-distaste on Willow’s face she immediately went into a panic. “Oh no, do I have something on my face?” As she embarrassingly wiped at her mouth the blonde wiccan attempted to extract herself from the redhead to get a better look of the disgusting substance that must’ve been oozing down her face.

Her panicked movements were halted however by two strong arms belonging to one flustered redhead. “No, no! There’s nothing on your face, you look good!” Tara ceased her movements and fixed the hacker with a doubtful look “It’s barely 7.00, I’ve had five hours sleep, not brushed my teeth since yesterday and your saying I look … good?”

Willow grinned at the expression plastered on Tara’s face “exactly!”

Tara gave a lopsided smile before leaning in to stage whisper “Have you been overloading on the caffeine again Miss Rosenberg? Because we’ve talked about this and it’s just not good for your general well-being!” Willow’s grin turned sheepish as she confessed “I do apologize Dr Maclay but it has been three days since my last caffeine hit.” The pair’s playful banter was interrupted by the loud grumbling of one Willow Rosenberg’s stomach. “Speaking of caffeine, I’m up for some mocha and bagely goodness! How about you?” The blonde completed a cat-like stretch and smoothly slipped out of her bed all the while saying “oh yeah, I could definitely go for that, but first, hygiene!” As she picked up her toothbrush and bathroom kit Willow watched transfixed by the movements of the unearthly beauty before her, hardly breathing in complete reverence to the grace which it emanated.

I love her.

The thought hit Willow faster than refracting light but she knew it was true and that was all the more reason it terrified her. This isn’t just a crush; this isn’t a ‘college thing.’ I’m in love with Tara Maclay. Love, Tara, love, in love with, Tara, love, I love Tara. Oh my God, this is big.

Hey there,

Your story is sweet. I like Tara subtly maneuvering Willow into her bed. I have never done anything of the sort. I certainly never used The Shining as an excuse to fall asleep next to someone; the someone who's engagement ring I'm currently wearing. Nope, never. *cough* I like that even before Willow figures out how she feels about Tara, she feels awkward about talking to Buffy about it; it's very true to Willow.

I know you said you weren't editing this on purpose, because you liked that the story is told with 16-year old eyes. Here's the problem with that: your sixteen year old self has grammar and punctuation issues. I live with a journalist and grew up with a writer, meaning that I get distracted from the story that someone is telling if these things are wrong.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I really suggest finding a beta reader. Specify when you look for one exactly what you want.If you don't want to change things like POV, pacing, and tone, you don't have to change them: saccharine and innocent is a totally valid way to write. So find a beta reader who will just deal with technical issues. Things like comma usage, tense usage, and the like won't change the nature of your story; they will make it a lot more readable.

Also, even if you don't want to incorporate it into the story, you should let us know how close to canon your setting is. Some things are clear: we're talking about a season four equivalent in which the mystical nature of the Buffyverse is still in place. But background like "canon up to episode xx" is useful for orienting how much of the character's background to take for granted.

I hope that's helpful!

how often do you think you will be updating? I can't wait for the next chapter! :] I really like Willow and Tara's banter in the morning and i also like Tara's character seems to have a little more confidence than in the show.

BeMyDeputy: Hi! Thanks for the input, it’s good to see that the art of floor to bed manipulation is in full swing all over the globe :blush . Yes, I see what you’re saying about the errors in grammar but like I said in the introduction, I’m purposefully not editing it because I would have to change the whole story and I kind of like the original untouched approach hehe. Oh and you are totally right! I totally forgot about a time setting! I shall include it in the next chapter posting. Thanks again for reading.

taysla: Hi there lol, I’m sure you and BeMyDeputy can share the dibs trophy for this update, or you could, if I had one heh. Thanks for reading, I’m glad you liked the beginning, yes, it’s interesting to see Willow getting secretive from the start. Hope you enjoy the rest!

lonelylanding: Hey thanks for the interest! Well seeing as how it’s finished I’ll probably be updating daily! Yes Tara’s confidence is sweet and unfortunately will be severely tested in the coming updates when her sore spots get dragged into the spotlight. *cue ominous notes* oo00ooo....

LonelyTara: Yeah totally! Thanks for stopping by :peace

In addition, I totally forgot to mention a time frame! This story is partly AU because it deals with things such as Willow and Buffy in college, Anya and Giles owning the magic shop and Willow and Tara fumbling to get into eachother's arms all at once, if I were to place it, I'd have to say season four with a chunk of season five thrown in :grin. And now! A long update because I am feeling gracious hehe.

CHAPTER TWO

As she took a seat at the Espresso Pump, Willow’s mind was still reeling. Does she love me? Does she even like me? Is she gay? Would she want me? One word sent the redhead crashing into the world of the living

“yes.”

Willow blinked rapidly as her mind reeled “y..yes?! Yes what?” she gazed at Tara with an unguarded stare and felt her insides burn as the blonde frowned. Could she have actually said all of that out loud? Had her babbling finally gotten her into trouble?

“I said yes? To the cream cheese bagels? You know, creamy.. cheesy.. I haven’t just landed in a world without bagels have I?” Tara let the quip go before pausing internally, cringing at the odd possibility of that very situation given their current hellmouthy location.

Willow smiled in deep relief and inwardly relaxed Holy Moses.. “Right! Of course, bagels, which are commonly come hand in hand with the consumption of coffee in this here reality.” The redhead blinked nervously at the blondes smile and continued “and yes, to the cream cheese that is, it’s my favorite!”

Tara’s smile grew as she nodded in understanding and rose from her Espresso Pump seat “okay so you be seat-protector and I’ll be hunter gatherer, well, just gatherer I guess…” The pair shared a light giggle and Tara headed off to pay for their breakfast.

After their morning meal the girls slowly made their way back to Tara’s dorm. Neither questioning what the other had planned for the day, each girl content to grasp onto as many precious moments with the other as possible.

As Willow talked Tara through the finer aspects of making the perfect mocha, the blonde let go of a wistful smile “I’ve always wanted to go to Italy”.

Willow rolled her eyes and sighed “It’s fantastic, or so I hear, I haven’t actually been, my parents are actually leaving for Italy again in a few weeks.”

Tara frowned softly at the undercurrent of hurt in the redhead’s tone “They go away a lot huh?” Willow looked up into Tara’s sad and understanding smile “Yours too?” She frowned.

Tara stiffened and nodded. “Kind of, my mom died a few years back.” The hacker paused their steady stroll and lay a hand on Tara’s arm “Oh Tara, I am so sorry, I had no idea! Here I am being a big dum dum and my parents are only gone for a fortnight.”

Tara shook her head and smiled through her glassy eyes “its okay, really, she was sick for a while so, in a way, it was good to say goodbye”.

Willow nodded although she had no idea what else to say, she felt so unprepared for the depth of pain a loss like that would bring. “At least you’ve still got your dad though right? If there’s one thing living in Sunnydale has taught me, it’s that family’s always important, you once said you had a brother too right? That’s good, I’m an only child, although Buffy and Xander kind of stand in for that role” Her tentative smile went south as she felt Tara stiffen and stutter horribly “I h-h-haven-nt s-s-s-seen h-him in a w-w-hile”

The hacker’s frown deepened intensely “Your brother or your father?”

Tara looked at her with armored flames marching in her eyes “Both”.

*****

Tara closed the door to her dorm with a soft click. “So do you want a tea? I h-have herbal” At Willow’s nod Tara immediately began to fuss around the small kitchen area as the hacker took off her coat and sat on one of the large, comfortable chairs that were arranged around the room. She waited until Tara handed her a cup and sat down in her own chair before speaking, desperate to break the strange tension that had filled the air at the mention of Tara’s family.

“So I was thinking about that spell we did last night; you know, if we changed some of the words around” Willow took a small sip of her aromatic drink before continuing “we could conjure up like a school of purple shrimp.” The hacker giggled at the quirky idea before she saw the unsteady frown that played on Tara’s face.

“Er we don’t have to conjure purple shrimp, they could be blue or even orange. I would’ve suggested pink but they are kinda already that weird fleshy colour aren’t they.” Willow continued her babble; terrified that she had somehow caused the blonde wicca infront of her to feel uneasy.

However Tara quickly stepped in and interrupted with an apologetic smile “No n-no Willow, it’s okay. I’m j-just allergic to shrimp that’s all. If I eat them my throat swells up and I kinda find it really hard to b-breathe”

At the blonde’s words Willow’s mind went into immediate worry overdrive “Oh Goddess Tara I didn’t know! Have you ever eaten shrimp before? Oh my, what happened?! Were you okay?!”

Tara couldn’t help but let a small smile escape her lips; Willow always had a way of turning every situation into possible life or death. “Well I did once; I was seven I think, with my d-d-dad. We were at dinner in a s-seafood restaurant, I didn’t really l-like the s-shrimp but I could tell d-dad was going to a lot of trouble for me so I ate it an-anyway.” Tara’s eyes wondered out into the nothingness of the room as if viewing the memory on an invisible screen. “At the beginning of dessert I started to feel really s-sick and h-hot, kinda icky, then I couldn’t really b-breathe in deeply, then not at all, after a few moments I p-p-passed out. I woke up in h-hospital the next day.” Tara’s eyes darkened but her continued thoughts were interrupted when she saw the hacker abandon her drink to move over and kneel down on the floor infront of her.

“That must’ve been horrible: not knowing what was going on, but still. It was really nice of your dad to take you out to dinner and all” Willow gave a tight smile as she tried to find a positive outlook on the oddly uncomfortable situation.

Tara’s eyes darkened once more but she kept her eyes focused on the hacker. “D-Donny had a b-b-baseball match in Nestlow; small town about an hour away. D-Dad wasn’t allowed to go though. He took me out because he couldn’t be bothered cooking dinner for just h-him and me. That was the only time he ever took me out, anywhere.” Willow saw the sad truth in Tara’s eyes before her head dropped and the disastrous evening was replayed in her mind.

The wicca’s thoughts were broken however when she felt a warm hand reach up and tuck the stray hairs that masked her face behind an ear and gently guide her chin back up to eye level “well, I think your dad’s a fool not to think you special.” The sincerity in Willow’s whisper and smile was evident. She let her hand linger near Tara’s face before pulling it back but keeping her smile.

“Willow, I’m n-n-not special.” Tara’s answer was simple but the pain behind it seeped through the short words.

Willow leaned forward and said in a strong but honest whisper “You’re wrong”.

Despite her confident tone no matter how hard she tried she could not hold the blue eyes for even a second after she had finished speaking. Those eyes had a way of looking deeper into her than she ever thought possible. Some part of her was afraid Tara would see what she fought so hard to hide: who she wanted, who she craved, who she spent every waking moment silently needing.

There was something about the way Willow answered that made Tara momentarily smile. “Willow, you r-r-really think s-so?” There was an almost-silent, childlike plea in Tara’s voice though she meant it as an honest question.

A small smile played on Willow’s lips but she fought it off to try and show Tara she was giving a serious answer.

“I do.” The hacker simply stated as she tried to hold the blue eyes that now flickered nervously infront of her. As nervous as she was she would not, could not, sit by and listen to the beautiful blonde wicca berate herself.

“But don’t you usually have to have unique talents or gifts to be s-special?” Tara sighed and half-smiled at her comment. She didn’t know how but Willow always had a way of making her answers seem so truthful, not even Tara could object to them without doubting herself.

“And what makes you think you don’t?” Willow gave an honest but chirpy smile to the wicca who briefly returned it before dissolving it into an unreadable look.

“well.. I don’t know..” Tara sighed, she knew Willow would find some way of winning but right now she needed to play along.

The small hacker thought for a moment before finally deciding on her words. “You see people. You really see them. You don’t get caught up in their first layer like the rest of us. You look deeper, for longer. Somehow you always manage to find that innocent beauty that we all possess and, and you unlock it like it’s.. like it’s the most simple thing in the world”

“…and your eyes, no one on this earth has those eyes.” Willow looked deep into the watery pools of blue emotion that were laid before her. Her nerves left her for that moment and she held them; continuing to gaze, her essence lost itself in the circle oceans that she so deeply loved, absorbing, savoring, and remembering everything about them. She knew she would have to, as she doubted she’d ever have the courage to look so deeply into Tara again.

Tara was intensely lost in Willow’s gaze. Her soul pouring out the tortured memories of her past to be cleansed by the beautiful green that seemed to wrap their beauty around her mind, body and soul to act as armor and for that one brief moment, both girls felt safe.

When Tara’s mind came back to her body she discovered she was crying, she feared that the euphoric feeling was all a dream but the safety which enveloped her was real, it was Willow holding her as she wept. And the peace Tara was blessed with stayed too, inclosed in Willow’s protective arms and wrapped in a hold that she knew would never let go, unless asked.

*****

When Buffy woke up she was shocked at the sight of the empty bed beside hers. Wills has gone all MIA again? Buffy’s mind began to wonder and worry until she noticed a small flashing 1 on the answering machine again. When she pressed play a very quiet Willow greeted her. “Hi Buffy, I’m just letting you know I’m okay. I snuck out early to the library to do some research for my paper. I’ll be back by lunch. Bye!”

Hmm she’s starting to worry me with her obscene study habits Buffy chuckled to herself as she flicked open her wardrobe and began to get ready for the day.

*****

Tara sat on the porch of her broken down home, the sky was a dark, eerie grey yet there was a delicate calm in the air. Morning birds sang haunting, melodic songs as Tara held her eyes closed and breathed in the musky, predawn air. A soothing female figure’s voice that had always seemed to be there spoke comforting whispers in her ear before turning to walk away.

“No, no don’t leave me! Don’t leave me here! PLEASE!” Tara’s voice was desperate and pained as long-contained tears spilled and dampened her cheeks. “Shhh” The figure soothed and placed a kiss on the wiccan’s ear “I’ll never leave you angel, I’ll never leave your soul.”

Tara opened her eyes once more “why is it so quiet mommy?” she whispered with a slither of childlike fear very present in her tone. “Shhhh little leaf” The blonde figure stepped back and smiled sadly “The birds always grow silent before the dawn erupts.”

A small sound of horror escaped Tara’s lips before she was jolted back by a dark force. Red filled Tara’s vision, it was all around her, inside her, crawling around, invading her; violating her. As she opened her eyes she found she was in the place where she spent most of her childhood life: under the bed in the upstairs bedroom. A booming noise overran the floor as it vibrated under the sheer force. He was coming. “TARA!” the powerful, angry voice ran through her body as she began to cry.

“Tara?!” Willow was woken by the forcefully sobbing blonde who she was still holding. “Tara wake up, oh Goddess please wake up!” Willow held the wicca tightly and gently rocked her into a calmer state. Although the blonde had stilled and was no longer screaming she continued to weep heavy tears into Willow’s shoulder causing a small damp patch to form on the hacker’s sweater.

“Tara, come on wake up, it was all just a dream. Just a dream Tara, just a dream. Come back, come back to me” Willow fought her extreme urge to panic and stayed calm, without thinking she put a gentle kiss on the distressed wiccan’s forehead. With this Tara awoke in a violent jerk causing both her and Willow, who was still firmly grasping her, to fall forwards before landing back into the wall.

“He f-f-found me, how c-come he always f-f-f-finds me?!” After the mumbled sentence escaped her lips Tara could only weep, exhausted she lay against Willow allowing the smaller redhead to take all her weight and cradle her much like she did the previous night.

Willow felt a very sudden pang of strange shame fly through her; she shouldn’t be listening to Tara’s rantings. Whatever they were about Willow had no right to share them, but she couldn’t leave the frail wicca with the obvious pain (from a past the hacker was determined not to pry into) by herself. So she stayed, stayed and held Tara on the floor and rocked her gently as amongst the heartbreaking trembles she occasionally let out a spasm-like shiver that even managed to reach deep into Willow’s own core and infect her with a cold fear.

As hard and she tried Willow couldn’t help but read into Tara’s convulsive tremors; there was something so primal and raw about the way Tara awoke. Like the painful vision she had dreamt had been scratched into her soul so many times it had become part of the shivering body that was so desperately clasping her now.

After a few minutes Tara seemed to have calmed down considerably under Willow’s touch. She was more peaceful now that the trembling had dissolved away and she was now silently resting in the redhead’s lap as Willow gently stroked the golden, shiny locks from her face. Silently making sure she didn’t disturb the blonde’s thoughts.

Willow was soon lost in her own thoughts. Tara, the woman that she had come to truly need and love was....

Love?! Did I just think ‘I love her’ again? Do I? Shouldn’t I know!? Oh Goddess stop lying Willow. You do know. You love her more than anything ever put on this earth! Everything about her is magic. And when she’s with me everything around me is magic. How does she do that? Just look at her! She’s so beautiful; the way her jawbone is just so strong and kissable, the way her eyes can’t even notice my gaze and still make it seem like they’re delving deep into me and Oh! The way her skin seems to shimmer so delicately from the tears. The Tears! No Will! Don’t think about it. If you think about it you’ll just get angry, Tara doesn’t need that right now. But how could you not?! I mean come on! How could anyone even conceive of hurting someone so good!? Whoever or whatever did this WILL pay! No one gets away with doing this much to my beautiful Tara. Woah

Willow blinked and subconsciously tightened her told on Tara

MY beautiful Tara??! Possessive much! Will wake up and smell the hamische! Since when is she yours?!?! She doesn’t belong to you,, face it she’ll probably never belong to you! Stop thinking about it! Just focus…focus on those eyes…yes…her eyes…they’ll calm you down.

Willow let out a small sigh of relief when she finally looked at Tara’s exquisite azure eyes. The wicca however noticed the sudden rise and fall of her body, it was enough to snap her out of her hypnotic state and try and pull herself together. She gathered every morsel of strength she had and slowly brought her mind back into the dimly lit room she was in. Willow was holding her close; seemingly protecting her body from the room while Tara’s mind was where she could not follow.

What on earth am I going to tell her? Can I even do this? I can't tell her the truth! Well truth or no truth this is definitely not going to be pretty. Goddess I feel so good when she holds me, she’s gotta be in pain.. cooped up all night and most of the day with my weight crushing her. Oh what's she going to think?! Wait Tar; don't worry about what she thinks as long as it isn't the truth. Goddess give me the strength to lie again.

But something inside Tara fought her instinct to immediately lie. Something hated the idea of not being honest with Willow and Tara knew exactly what it was. No Tara. Don’t go there. You know that it’ll just end up breaking you. With determination to get out of the situation without falling victim to more painful tears Tara slowly turned her head so she was looking up at Willow. She was surprised when she saw that the hacker was gazing right back at her, though Willow herself seemed even more surprised and quickly looked away, her skin quickly morphing to a subtle shade of pink.

Tara sat up and continued to look at the blushing hacker. Completely taken by the fact that in the few nanoseconds before Willow’s eyes had turned away Tara couldn’t see even a fragment of negativity. All she saw was friendship, care and could she say it … love? Goddess she’s so beautiful when she does that! I never knew skin could glow that much.

“Hey” Tara whispered, suddenly at a loss on what to say.

“Hey” Willow smiled and brought her gaze back to Tara.

As the two locked eyes whatever resolve was in Tara liquefied into sheer love for the woman that had stayed so close to her through the night and with this the familiar tears came trickling back.

“W-W-Wil-low…” As the name eventually escaped her stuttering lips Tara became immediately more calm, wiping the first tears away and finding the strength to hold back the others. Saying the beautiful hacker’s name often had that calming affect on her. It was the most beautiful name she had ever heard. Infact at times she even used it as a mantra when her stuttering became too pronounced for even her to handle.

“I’m s-s-s” Tara began

“NO!” Willow interrupted much more forcefully then she had ever intended. She just couldn’t handle what this had done to Tara; the way it made her doubt people, doubt herself and even doubt Willow enough to think that there was actual need for an apology.

Tara was quite taken back by Willow’s sharp interference. Her head immediately went down in her shy and passive manner as thousands of Tara-hairs shielded her facial features from the wincing hacker.

As soon as the action was made Willow had to fight hitting herself in the head right then and there. How could she be so insensitive and stupid?! Oh God Willow you ARE an idiot! I’ve gotta fix this now. I’ve gotta make this right. But what could she do? Nervously bringing one hand up so it was barely centimeters away from Tara’s flushed skin; Willow had to dig deep inside herself as she tried to remember how to speak. She was discovering more and more that, when in situations that found her in such close contact with the blonde wicca, it was increasingly difficult for her to construct solid thoughts or even string together basic sentences. Anything with more then two syllables was completely beyond her at this moment.

“ No Tara… don’t. Don’t look down to anyone.”

Willows words lifted something in the blonde but she wasn’t budging from her submissive state. Willow could see that she hadn’t quite reached the blonde with her words

Hey actions speak louder than words right. Nothing else for you to do now Will. Just go with the flow and try not to do anything stupid.

With that thought Willow carefully ran her fingers down Tara’s cheek so it rested on her chin. Although she didn’t notice herself doing so, Willow began to affectionately rub her thumb over the wicca’s chin, letting out a breath she closed her eyes before speaking. “Tara, I’m sorry for scaring you but please. Promise me you won’t. Trust me enough to not apologise over this. Not this.”

Willow’s actions and words soothed Tara’s mind and she got up the courage to look at the small hacker infront of her. She was secretly glad that Willow had her eyes closed as it gave her the freedom to really look at the redhead. Her eyes seemed to go over every strand of glistening red hair before moving to Willow’s eyes. Damn! Why can’t you be open? I want to see you, all of you. She went on to admire Willow’s skin. Tara knew that she’d have to say something soon before the hacker noticed the silence and snapped out of her daze but she couldn’t move, she couldn’t think. All she could do, all she could focus on, was Willow’s skin. Every gleaming cell had Tara completely mesmerized.

Look at the light she radiates. The way she glows. Goddess Tara wake up! This woman is the universe to you; you can’t lie to her, come on Tar you know you can’t. Love doesn’t lie.

“W-Willow?” Tara spoke quietly so as to not startle the hacker who she sensed wasn’t quite with her at that moment.

Willow opened her eyes before trying her hardest to focus. “Uhhhu?” Oh great Rosenberg! Stun her with your ability to make vowel AND consonant sounds. Let’s try this again. “Yes Tara?” TOUCH DOWN! We have solid words!

With Willow’s words, the resolve and confidence that Tara had been so desperately trying to build up once again fled and left her with nothing but uneasiness. How does she do that?! Come on Tara focus. Just tell her. TELL HER!

“W-Willow, I-I-I’ve got-ta t-t-t-tell y-y-ou” Tara franticly tried to control her stutter but all it did was make it worse. Even saying Willow’s name did nothing. If anything it made her even more nervous.

What if I lose her? What if she gets too scared and runs. I can’t lose her! I only just found her! No Tara! Stop! Don’t do this. She asked you to trust her. So trust her, take the leap. Trust that she’ll understand.

Willow was intently staring at Tara but her thoughts were far off. All she wanted to do was stop Tara dead in the middle of the sentence she was trying to get out and make all her pain go away.

Rosenberg wake up! She said something! Oh no! What did she say? … tell me? Tell me what! Tell me to stop? Tell me to get out? Oh no! She’s gonna ask me to leave. I better go, I’ve gotta go. If I don’t I know I’ll do something stupid. Oh Goddess! How can I leave her? She’s so alone, so scared. No! I’m sorry Tara but NO! I won’t leave you here alone.

“Tara no. I’m sorry but no. I know that you’re going to ask me to leave but NO! I, I can’t just go out that door and leave you all alone here in the dark, and that’s exactly where you are: in the dark and we’ll get through it together Tara, together.”

Tara blushed as her eyes filled with overwhelmed tears Well I guess that means I’m safe about the ‘her leaving’ part. Goddess she’s beautiful when she babbles. I wish she’d never stop. However she soon wiped them away when she realised the error that had brought on the redheads tender words.

“Err, Willow thank you so much but I wasn’t going to ask you to leave. Th-That’s not w-what I’ve got to t-t-tell y-you.” Tara chuckled at first but she soon darkened again at the prospect of telling Willow everything she’d kept hidden away from the world for so long.

“Oh” Willow too chuckled as her cheeks burnt up from sheer embarrassment And Rosenberg misses again! Jeez Will, come on focus! What’s she got to tell you? Oh…Willow soon caught on when she saw Tara’s eyes darken.

She looked at Tara intently, much like the previous night and she found the courage to once again keep the stare before speaking in a tone that overflowed with a tenderness previously unknown to even her, she almost didn’t believe it was even her saying it. “Tara, don’t tell me now. If you ever tell me, do it because you want to. Do it because you’re ready. You don’t have to explain anything to me okay. This is me Tara! Willow!” The redhead gave a trademark Willow grin to lighten up the atmosphere before continuing. “You don’t have to explain to me, make up excuses to me and you don’t ever have to hide from me okay. You’re my friend” Willow put the emphasis on the word ‘friend’ when she could sense she was seconds away from revealing too much.

“..nothing can ever stop me from wanting to spend time with you.” She pulled the silent wicca into a warm hug before whispering “I love you Tara, don’t ever forget that. Whatever’s happened in your past has done just that… passed.”

Tara was speechless at the hacker’s words. It was only when she felt Willowhands clenching her back and holding her with a tenderness she hadn’t felt in years that she found the power to speak, though her words came out barely a broken whisper “Thank you. I’m... Thank you” She’s right. I’m not ready. She always seems to be right, oh… she said she loved me. Friendship love yes, but its love never the less oh Thankyou Goddess, Thankyou for blessing me with her love.

Without meaning to Tara thought out loud and whispered in the sweet tone Willow discovered she was beginning to adore “I love you too. Thank you Willow, Thank you so much”

Tara’s voice betrayed her and the sobbing began once more. This time it was reciprocated as Willow wept into Tara’s strong hold as well. What they had found was so special, so precious, and so strong. At that moment they both knew that no one could ever even begin to break it. Except maybe themselves.

I just want to be the first in here before BeMyDeputy..

I'm back. :lol

Does she love me? Does she even like me? Is she gay? Would she want me? One word sent the redhead crashing into the world of the living

YES for all the question... Come on, you are keeping them on the dark.. no fair. *pout*

“Willow, you r-r-really think s-so?” There was an almost-silent, childlike plea in Tara’s voice though she meant it as an honest question.

Not just her, but I think the same..Goddess know how special you are. *smile*

“But don’t you usually have to have unique talents or gifts to be s-special?” Tara sighed and half-smiled at her comment.

Well, maybe if you look on the mirror you will see all the unique talents and gifts you have to be special as you are.

Hmm she’s starting to worry me with her obscene study habits Buffy chuckled to herself

Well, I would love to have Willow obscene study habits too. *smirk*

“I love you Tara, don’t ever forget that. Whatever’s happened in your past has done just that… passed.”

I LOVE YOU TOO... Aww, Willow is so sweet and cute when she say that. *blushes*

At that moment they both knew that no one could ever even begin to break it. Except maybe themselves.

NOOOOOOO.. That can't even happen. Ok! I hate see them apart, that is not good. That will make me fall apart and feel sad and will make me cry... Not good making me cry. NOOOOO..

Well now I finished.. Goddess, this time I writed a lot. lol

Well done with the chapter I like a lot this chapter...

Until tomorrow.

So sad, but so very very sweet. I hope these two realize how much they're unintentionally torturing each other very soon.

taysla: hey there you surely secured dibs this time! It is sad that Tara’s image of herself is so distorted, but hey, that’s what Willow’s for, right?

LonelyTara: Hi again, thanks for sticking with the story! True, they are in the dark about their feelings at this point but don’t fret - all shall be revealed by the end! Mwahaha! :kdevil

**Chapter Disclaimer**: Like I state in the notes, this story deals with issues of domestic violence, if you have sensitivities to that subject and prefer not to read about it, I suggest skipping this chapter.

CHAPTER THREE

Willow knew that she would have to eventually leave Tara’s room and go back to her own but somehow she had managed to avoid raising the topic all day. That was until Tara spoke.

“It’s almost sundown. I love the sky just before the sun goes down. It gets so … magical … don’t you think?”

Willow stretched from the chair she’d been sitting on and walked over to the window next to Tara. “It does...Wow, I never noticed that before.” Willow smiled genuinely. She never did use to notice such things, not until she met Tara anyway. Now, everything that the blonde wicca admired held a new status of beauty in the hacker’s mind. Willow let her eyes wonder over to look at Tara as the blonde continued speaking.

The girl was beautiful; it was as simple as that. Willow knew that Tara would never believe it no matter how many times she was told, but she was. Her snowflake skin and cobalt eyes had the strangest affect on Willow; it was like they made her stronger than she thought she’d ever be but weaker at the same time. Whatever it was, Willow knew that she hadn’t felt anything like it before. Her skin tingled after the briefest of contacts with Tara; the energy that flowed between them was amazing. It was flaming warmth that chased away all the cold that lived in both their veins. It was the strongest, most powerful emotion she’d ever felt.

“It’s like all the s-stars are just beginning to shine and the moon’s just b-barely there” Tara gave a small shy smile “I-I d-dunno, it always fills me with a kind of p-peace. Like it’s n-not night and it’s not day. It’s just the world being … b-beautiful.”

Without taking her eyes off Tara the redhead smiled and agreed “Beautiful.” As the two locked eyes Tara subconsciously began leaning towards Willow, inching closer every few seconds. When she saw the hacker had begun to do the same she didn’t pull back.

Willow’s mind was awash. All she could think of was how unbelievably stunning the woman infront of her was. The day began to flash before her in one wonderful blur, she remembered all the different side’s of Tara she had seen, and she felt utterly privileged to have seen any of them. She remembered the looks, the smiles, the laughs. Everything about Tara was so pure and remarkable; she listened as Willow told her about herself, the life she led. The hacker was careful however to leave out the bits that involved blood sucking vampires and slimy, horned demons.

She had mentioned her parents and guessed that Tara had intimately understood the pain of having parents that were hardly ever there.

Willow smiled as a memory floated by “W-Willow, you know when you saw my window lights on and you came up? Well, they’ll always be on, d-don’t ever hesitate to come up. Even if I’m n-not here and y-you just need um, a safe place to g-go? Please, don’t hesitate.” The moment the words sunk into the hacker along with Tara’s gentle smile she felt the largest release take place inside her. Like a weight that had always been crushing her had suddenly evaporated. Tara truly was precious.

Her thoughts stopped however when she recalled something the blonde had said. “Hey, look it’s almost sundown…”

Sundown, sundown. Oh My God! SUNDOWN! I was supposed to meet Buffy before patrol. She’ll send out a search party (like literally) if I don’t show up. Arrg! I’ve gotta tell Tara…Woah! She’s so close. How did she get so close? She’s moving…I’m moving! Stop moving Willow!

Willow winced “…Tara wait”

The blonde and the redhead simultaneously jerked backwards at Willow’s words. Breathing heavily with wide eyes the pair focused on everything in the room but each other. Tara couldn’t believe what she was just about to do. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! Willow mentally slapped herself. What the hell did you just do?! You’ve screwed up everything now! Tara thought she was going to actually bruise from all the mental slapping she was inflicting upon herself. Oblivious to the fact that they were both thinking exactly the same thoughts the two moved to opposite ends of the window.

“No! I’m, uh, Tara, I’ve...I’ve gotta go. I, I know it looks bad but I can’t tell you why. Please don’t be mad. It has nothing to do with you. I’ll…I’ll call you later okay. I promise! Please don’t be mad” Willow’s mind went into lockdown; she couldn’t even begin to decipher what had just transpired between the two of them.

Wait Will, what did just happen? … Nothing! Nothing happened at all … I lean into my friends all the time …God dammit! I can’t even lie to myself about this! That stinks.

“Um, y-yea. I g-guess you s-s-should wanna g-go. Um b-b-bye Willow.” Tara bit her lip as she tried her hardest to keep most of the emotion out of her voice. Outside she was almost alright. Inside she was screaming, crying, tearing herself apart. What the hell have you done Tara?! Now you’ll probably never even see her again! How do you always manage to scare people away?! She cringed as memories flashed before her eyes, other times, other places, people in front of her; slipping away. And Donny in the background, burning the words into her forever “Dad was right, you are nothing but a monster.”

Willow saw Tara’s face crumble and it shattered her. Tara’s eyes were now broken, their cracks filled with a pain so deep that it scared her.

What have I done!? Just leave Rosenberg. Just…leave. You’ve done enough to her. Just go. Willow had to scream at herself before her legs would work.

When she got to the door, the void left by the words left unspoken engulfed her. It was sheer cowardice on her part but she couldn’t fight it, she wasn’t ready, she wasn’t ready to put her heart out there with so much desperate uncertainty crackling in the air. But there was so much she wanted to do. So much she wanted to say. No Will, you don’t have the right to say anything to her anymore. Stay away and don’t ever hurt her again. The hacker was full of self-hatred, disgust and loathing, however before she left she let the words leave her mind and mouth in a heart wrenching, broken tone “I’m so s-sorry Tara.”

After that Tara heard the door quietly close and she was once again alone. Alone in dorm, alone in mind, alone in heart alone in life.

Maybe I’m just meant to be this way.

The final thought washed through her as her eyes closed and she collapsed into herself on her bed. The familiar emptiness inside her had once again returned, and her sadness at that ran too deep for even her tears to appear.

*****

As soon as Willow closed the door behind her she broke into a full bolt down the hall. Her mind was reeling. What the hell did I just do?! WHY DO I ALWAYS RUIN THINGS?! She looked so hurt, so afraid. Like she was falling and just waiting to smash.

Willow turned the corner sharply and all her thoughts were interrupted when her body violently made contact with another.

As soon as Willow realised what had happened the stranger she’d no doubt bowled over in her rampage was standing over her. Deciding to ignore the slight sting in her left ankle for the moment she looked up to stranger and an eerie feeling possessed her; there was something about the man that wasn’t quite right. She looked into his eyes but saw nothing, just shallow hazel upon a dull sepia background. She blinked and searched for something, anything to signify that there was feeling behind them, but found nothing.

From her few lessons with Tara she had begun to learn how to read people’s auras and even with her novice talent she could see that nothing about this man’s was pleasant.

Although he was strongly blocking anything from coming out, almost as if he was continuously hiding, she could sense dim traces of betrayal, hurt and anger that were barely trickling through. What really caught her attention though was the amount of fear that flowed from him. It was a foul type of fear; the type that manifests itself from nothing and ends up controlling you. It seemed to seep out from every cell of his body; Willow had to blink a few times to steady herself.

As the man looked back at her she realised that she hadn’t actually said anything to him yet. She knew that it would be smart to just slip away but something about the man made her want to know more.

She managed to mumble out an apology while she tried to get up, though she found that that slight sting in her left ankle had suddenly escalated to a scorching inferno of pain. No sooner had she gotten up she fell back down again, clutching her ankle and trying to push the pain away. And I’m up! Ahhh Pain! And I’m down again. Yikes! How the hell did that happen?! Okay Will think what was that thing that Tara taught you? She focused and muttered a quick numbing spell under her breath. It would hold off the pain for five minutes or so, at least it would give her enough time to get back to her dorm room.

Without saying a word the man extended his hand in a bid to help Willow to her feet. Another thought crossed the redhead’s mind I wonder…

She had read about taking a further step when reading aura’s in one of the books in the magic shop that Giles had expressly forbidden her from ever reading under any circumstance. It enabled the reader to have a very brief glimpse into the person. All that needed to happen was some form of physical contact.

She centered herself and focused as she took the dark stranger’s hand. Her eyes flickered closed as she took a breath in preparation.

And nothing happened…

Well! That was a whole lot of nothing! Some great witch you are Rosenberg.

Disappointed and somewhat upset by her failure Willow pulled herself up sporting a very large frown. The stranger misinterpreted the frown and, letting go of the redhead’s hand, he spoke up “Don’t feel so bad. It could’ve happened to anyone I suppose.”

Willow was a little more than confused by what he said and just stood there with a vacant expression on her face. Finally it dawned on her. “OH! Right. Yea, the fall, I, er, I guess it could, happen to anyone I mean. I mean, you know anything could happen to anyone right. Just one big happenin’ world this one ain’t it.” She gave a tight laugh and smile but cringed as she realised how truly pathetic that babble must’ve sounded.

The stranger did not seem amused at her rant but never the less smiled politely. He was about to walk off when Willow stopped him. “Err Thankyou by the way, I’m really sorry I just wasn’t looking where I was going ya know?”

He smiled again but this one was different. It seemed unnatural and uncomfortable on his face.

Willow decided right then and there that she needed to know more about the person. She stuck out her hand and introduced herself “I’m Willow. Willow Rosenberg”

At the moment their hands connected Willow’s mind crashed into a different place. Dark, wooden, old and musky - in this place Willow couldn’t just see things, she could hear, taste, smell, and touch everything around her. The air was filled with an unfamiliar stench and she found herself having to sit down out of shock. Willow stumbled back on the bed behind her, not thinking to question how she knew it was there.

Suddenly a piercing scream filled the room; it was followed by a dull, sickening thud. The very sound of it made Willow’s stomach turn at the possibilities. What the hell is going on here?!

As soon as the thought entered her mind she heard faint, pained sobs. It sounded like the voice of a girl; she couldn’t have been more than ten years old. Willow's heart sank as the picture clicked. She longed to reach out and protect the child but she couldn’t move from her fixed position. All she could do was helplessly listen to the sobs; they were filled with a deep suffering and anguish that no child should ever have to feel.

Willow then heard footsteps; hard and sharp: the type made by steel capped boots. They were followed by the harsh, stinging sounds of slapping and more, low thuds. The child’s broken voice was faintly heard, begging, pleading for an end. It was always followed by the stranger’s violent, distorted raves. Willow knew he was saying something but she couldn’t quite make out what. She felt a strange vibration go through the room every so often and had to strongly fight back the bile that rose in her throat at the realization of what was actually happening. Goddess; he’s throwing her against the wall.

It was all too much. Willow desperately wrenched herself away from the painful vision. She was back in the hallway and once again on the floor. The pain was slowly beginning to return in her ankle but she once more got to her feet.

The stranger was still standing infront of her with an odd look on his face. “Are you alright? I don’t know how, but you fell back again.” Willow had to claw back the rage that was boiling up inside her. “I’m fine.” Willow clenched her jaw, chest heaving with barely contained breaths.

“Yeah. Sorry.” She was determined to get out of the situation without screaming but tears were beginning to form in her eyes, I gotta get out of here before I hurt the guy! Not that he doesn’t deserve it..

Willow began to step back, preparing to leave as she mumbled out a “thanks”. She turned around to run off again when she heard a sound that made the small hairs on the back of her neck prickle up with a fear she didn’t know she could feel. Hard, sharp footsteps, she turned around and eyed the stranger.

Steel capped boots. She winced as a whisper of a thud washed through her memory. They poked out from his aging trenchcoat as he confidently strode off; Willow’s tears flowed freely now.

She then realised why Giles didn’t want her reading those books. It wasn’t just that she heard what happened in the vision; she felt some of it too. She felt the indescribable fear of the innocent, her confusion, the ultimate pain she felt with every strike. Any more and Willow would’ve passed out from the overload.

She needed to get back to her dorm room; everything was just too much. Her ankle was now throbbing as the pain finally began to escape the spell. That meant that any chance she had of getting to patrol was out the window anyway. Then there was everything that had or really hadn’t happened with Tara. Tara she thought, she realised then just how much she did need the blonde wiccan in her life and how much she helped her in everyday things.

Willow was filled with another rush of deep sadness as she thought of the very real possibility that she was going to completely lose the incredible woman.

No Will, don’t. Stop thinking about stuff and just get to the dorm and sleep. You know you can never think properly when you haven’t slept.

*****

When she got to her dorm Willow collapsed onto her bed and as she drifted off into a teary, disturbed sleep she said a silent prayer for the Goddess to protect the helpless innocent she had envisioned.

As the last few tendrils of conscious thought slipped from her grasp the name of the stranger sizzled and popped in her mind. She felt the anger build up in her again but she forced herself to keep it down. It was beginning to scare her how much this was affecting her. She definitely needed to rest.

Ack, why oh why did it stop there?! That's Tara's horrible dad, yeah? Man oh man, I am really bummed and how these two beat themselves up, it's so painful. But then that's an aspect of their history that was never explored enough on the show. Willow was completely emotionally abused by her parents, abandoned and neglected, and Tara had the worst of both worlds with the emotional and physical abuse. :( I am really nervous about what Willow will do when she realizes that the images she witnessed were of the girl she loves. So...does this count as a Thursday post or a Friday post? I think since it's on the boarder you should post another one right now! (*Shamelessly greedy!*)

Life does tend to break off in the worst places, doesn't it?

I'm liking the specific power you're giving to Willow here. It allows scary s et-ups in ordinary things. And also like how you're showign ehr inattention to time passing. Naughty of her but we know what that means, right?
A new preoccupation :-).

General note: I'm very happy about all the S-4 fics showing up lately, whether canon or moderately AU; just great to see all those good imaginations we have here working on filling in the blanks from that season.

I've probably asked you this before but what *is* that thign in your icon :-)?

LonelyTara: It could’ve been Tara’s dad, we just don’t know yet do we ;-) ? I’m glad you commented on what we weren’t shown on the show. I always thought it was a really wasted story line and it would've helped to add even another layer to their already textured relationship. You’re right as well about the lack of updating lol, I’ll make this one extra long to make up for it!

DaddyCatALSO: Hi! Thanks so much for stopping by! Yeah I always thought that the visiony thingie would be so cool so see on the show I just had to jam it in somewhere lol. Totally right about the new preoccupation, if only Willow can get back there and make stuff right again!

Oh, and in regards to the icon question, many have asked and many have been left confused! I’m fairly sure it’s some kind of weird botched up dinosaur/giraffe type thing. I like to think of it as a blissfully ignorant creature on a treadmill, running towards a strung up piece of cake!

taysla: yes yes you’ll have to share the dibs trophies I’m afraid! I’m also afraid that the first kiss will be a while away yet hehe, you’ll just have to keep reading!

In addition: I totally forgot to mention a time frame! This story is partly AU because it deals with things such as Willow and Buffy in college, Anya and Giles owning the magic shop and Willow and Tara fumbling to get into eachother's arms all at once, if I were to place it, I'd have to say season four with a chunk of season five thrown in.

In addition to the addition: Before we start this chapter, I'd like to make it clear that I know nothing about chemistry or science for that matter and so take no responsibility for the impossibility of the 'experiments' Willow conducts lol.

CHAPTER FOUR

Willow spent the next few days studying. She studied for her psychology exam, which wasn’t for another four months. She studied for her biology prac, which wasn’t due for another eight weeks. She reviewed all her notes for the year and even put her complex highlighting system into practice. She sorted all her notes, books and tapes in alphabetical and numerical order and after that she sorted all her clothes into sections of ‘definitely,’ ‘cute,’ ‘wearable,’ ‘blechy’ and ‘…oh god’

She was now starting on Buffy’s things.

Life without Tara was getting to her. She needed to keep herself busy.

Life? Life?! It’s been three days! That doesn’t count as life. Well, maybe for a lab-rat.. Tara would make a cute lab-rat.. Oh Goddess Will! You’re obsessed! This is getting out of hand. Maybe I should talk to her. ‘Tara! Haven’t seen you in a while! Three days thirteen hours and …twenty-seven minutes to be exact. Hey just out of curiosity are you still shattered over what I did to you or are you magically okay now?’ Yea, that’ll go down just great Rosenberg! Oh ew… Since when does Buffy own fur?!

Willow was pulled out of her thoughts by the sound of the door opening.

“Er, Will…what the hell has happened to our room? And what are you doing with my … OH MY GOD! EW! I OWN FUR?!”

Willow stared at Buffy’s frame in the doorway with wide eyes “Buffy! Um, hi. I didn’t, um; I didn’t expect you to be back so soon. I was just um, just…” Willow searched desperately through her mind to try and find an excuse. Even her babbling was failing her. This was never a good thing.
LAUNDRY! HA! I was doing the laundry…her laundry…oh god. I’m doomed.

Her mind stopped weighing out the pros and cons of her laundry scheme when she saw the stern look her best friend was giving her. Maybe I should tell her… I mean who better to help me with this then my best friend … right? … right?!

“I was just um … keeping busy.” The speed of Willow’s words slowed and she looked down, suddenly fascinated by the strange fur garment that no body seemed to recognize. Maybe this isn’t such a good idea I mean I don’t even know what I’m thinking. How could she?

“Keeping busy? Oh God Will, Oz??” Buffy rushed over and knelt down beside her best friend. Wow Oz. Buffy frowned. I thought Will was getting over him.

Willow looked blankly ahead into the open closet she was sitting by. Oz? Oh wow... Oz. The truth was that Oz hadn’t been in Willow’s mind for weeks. As she thought about it, this was the first time in months that she couldn’t name how many days exactly Oz had been gone for. Even the very mention of his name didn’t bring the same pain. It wasn’t the raw ache that wrapped itself around Willow’s heart and slowly began to squeeze. It was different. Yes it was still there but it seemed like the wound he caused was finally beginning to heal. She knew that she had but one person to thank for that. Tara. She had helped Willow get back something she thought she’d lost forever. The redhead couldn’t even tell what it was, but it was back, and she’d missed it.

She couldn’t tell Buffy all of this yet. Not yet, not now, she needed more time. Time to think of what to do and how to fix things.

“Yea…Oz. Um, I don’t know why he just popped in my head and whammo! Back with the pain. But I’m okay now, I just needed to keep my head busy for a while to get him out of there” Willow did her best reassuring face and added in a Willow-grin just incase.

Buffy skeptically eyed her best friend for a while before speaking “are you sure Will, coz if something’s wrong you know you can tell me right?”

Yep, definitely not the right time to tell her any of this. But don’t worry Buff, soon. This time Willow gave a real smile and nodded “I know I can tell you Buffy but really, there’s nothing else to tell anymore. He’s out of my system and hey, it only took three days of insane studying and arranging to do it”.

Buffy was convinced after she heard Willow laugh. No one can fake that! “Yeah about that, you do realise now that you know I own fur I’m going to have to kill you” Buffy’s face was like steel but the mischievous streak in her voice betrayed her intentions completely.

“Oh yeah, I know, but not if I tickle you into submission first!” Willow grinned and before Buffy had time to react to the warning the redhead pounced.

Buffy couldn’t even form protest, she was desperately trying to breathe but the laughing was too much. Since when does Will EVER beat me at tickle fights? This I’ve gotta change.

Willow was thoroughly enjoying what seemed to be her first victory over the slayer until she was suddenly spun around in a matter of seconds “Oh hey!! No fair! Using Slayer-strength is sooo against the- Ahhh!” The redhead cut herself short and she was once again crying tears of laughter and screaming “I GIVE UP! I GIVE UP!”

“Do you promise you surrender Will? No more tricks now, we both know what happens if you try and trick the slayer now don’t we?” Buffy was grinning like a Cheshire cat as she gave her warning.

“I PROMISE! I PROMISE! Look, if I had a white flag I’d be waving it just plllleeeaaasee stop!!”

Willow was realised from Buffy’s grip but continued giggling on the floor with the slayer for several minutes. They’re laughter was interrupted by the shrill ringing of the telephone.

“And cue the hellmouth’s karmic system!” Buffy sighed as she dragged herself away from the floor “ten minutes of fun tickle time equals say what? A small scale apocalypse?” Willow chuckled and stretched out “Well” she grinned “if we’re being precise I’d have to say small to moderate”.

“Oh shush you. Hello?” Buffy’s chirpy smile was soon gone as she groaned.

“Are you sure?!” “Yes, yes okay we’ll be there”

Willow pealed herself off the floor and gave the slayer a questioning look. “So what is it? Is everyone okay?”

Buffy was quick to reassure “Everything’s okay Will, Giles just wants us for a scooby meeting. Apparently some weird stuff’s been happening that might equal a new big bad so he wants us for research.”

Willow let out a groan “small to moderate. We sure can pick em” though she was rolling her eyes in annoyance, on the inside, she was secretly a very happy Willow.

Yay research! Anything to keep my mind off Tara. Though I do have to talk to her, even if it’s to just see if she’s okay. But how can I? Like she’ll ever want to see me again anyway! Urmph! Think about it as soon as you have time off Rosenberg!

As Willow made the promise to herself she and Buffy both put on their coats and began the walk to the Magic Shop, Buffy discretely slipping the fur-lined coat under her bed in her retreat.

*****

As they sat down at the round research table they were immediately greeted by Anya “Yay! More workers means less books for us” She grabbed a large pile of books and dumped them where Willow and Buffy sat before giving a stunning smile and walking back towards Xander, who was trying not to cringe at the unique way his girlfriend dealt with people. “Enjoy!” she smiled again and then lost herself in a research book.

Willow and Buffy exchanged a look and then grabbed a book each.

The slayer took an axe that was idly lying on the table and moved it to the chair next to her before sitting again “Oh hang on. Question!” she raised her hand “What exactly are we meant to be looking for?”

“Anything to do with bone marrow eaters, I’ve narrowed it down though there are many demons who enjoy sucking the marrow out of humans for various reasons” Giles walked in calmly sipping a tea.

Buffy gave a shocked expression “This is narrow to you?! There must be like fifty books here!”

“Oh yes and there’s more to come, I’ve only covered a quarter of my collection, jolly good fun awaits!” Giles smiled dryly and took another sip of his tea

“O-kaay, sorry I asked.” Buffy gave a disgruntled noise before burying her face in the book on her lap.

Willow joined in the conversation with the obvious question that no body seemed to want to ask “How do we know this demon, whatever it is, is in Sunnydale right now?”

Everyone at the tabled stilled except for her and Buffy. It was Giles who finally broke the silence “Yes, well I gather from your question that are yet to watch today’s news. An entire ward at Sunnydale memorial has been killed. The patients have been found dead and stripped of their bone marrow.”

“Oh Goddess! That’s horrible! An entire ward?! Do you think we’re looking at a nest? I mean a whole ward in one night is a little much for just one demon don’t you think?” Willow cautiously questioned while looking intently at Giles who seemed to always be the one with any type of answers.

“Yes, the whole burns victim unit. And again, yes, I do think that whatever type of demon we’re looking at, it’s most definitely in a nest of...”

“OH GOD! Did you say burns victims unit?!” Anya shouted and instantly cut Giles off.

“Yes Anya, why exactly?” Giles’ philosophy was, as annoying as she was, Anya had been a demon for 1200 years and if that didn’t give you in-depth knowledge nothing else would.

“Like you couldn’t have told us that before! It’s a Voglar demon nest! They like they’re marrow to be smokey, perfect when one’s been burnt” She smiled brilliantly at the room: happy to have been the one who found the answer and stop the research.

“A Voglar demon.. yes” Giles nodded to himself while flipping to a book and opening it to the required page “yes, they do often travel in nests and … oh. Oh dear!” Giles’ eyes narrowed as he continued to read to himself.

“Giles, spill. That vein in your neck is bulging out which means it can’t be good. Whatever it is we’ll deal” Buffy cautiously eyed the vein in his neck, which looked like it was an inch away from jumping ship and forming a colony of its own.

Giles subconsciously rubbed his neck as he answered “Yes, well you’re right, it isn’t good. I don’t believe we’ve ever faced an opponent like this before. The Voglar demon’s main defense, that is to say, main weapon, really is that…”

“Oh honest to Pete man! Just tell them!” Anya snapped “The thing that makes Voglar demons so dangerous is their ability to become invisible.” She huffed out in a tired tone

“Yes, thank you Anya I was just getting to that” Giles took off his glasses and wiped them clean in an effort to calm down and stick to his well-worn philosophy. Very well worn…

“If you’d all take a look at the picture and description on the page we can start on trying to figure out how we’re going to find them” Giles sat down and sipped at his tea as the Scooby’s took turns in studying the page of information.

“Well okay, we know what it eats. What it looks like. But how do we kill it?” Willow questioned to no one in particular

The quiet of the situation was immediately broken when Anya bolted up from her chair with a thick book “Bee! Bee! Bee!” She ran across the room chasing the insect in question, slamming the book down every few moments in an effort to squish it. “Stay away from my valuables foul insect beastie!!”

“Anya, calm down! You’re doing it all wrong anyway, you need a spray” Xander grabbed her bag and pulled out a deodorant bottle before spraying it at the insect.

“Xander! Don’t waste my deodorant!! That costs money! MY money!” Anya scowled at her boyfriend and began stalking towards him.

As he continued to spray a faint sizzling sound was heard before a huge insect-like creature slowly fuzzed into view. It was shrieking in pain and smoke was steaming from its skin as it bared its claws and swiped at Xander, barely landing a strike on his upper arm.

Buffy was quick to react and grabbed the axe that was on the chair next to her. With one swipe she cut the demons head clean off. Turning to Willow and smiling toothily she said “Well, decapitation’s always a good one”

Willow smiled, although somewhat disturbed by the head of the disgusting demon as it oozed fluids onto the floor. She thought for a while before speaking. “They must know there’s a slayer in town. I don’t think we have much time to figure this out.”

As she finished her sentence the creature’s body began sizzling and smoking for a while before disappearing into the floor leaving behind a small damp patch and its decapitated head.

“Wow, disappears and everything. Very cool.” Buffy appraised the demon before turning to Xander “are you okay? We better get you cleaned up”

“Yeah I’m fine he just scratched the surface, nice axing by the way” He gave a childlike grin before walking off to the first aid box with Giles and Anya who was still glaring at him for wasting her deodorant while still managing to fuss over him caringly.

Buffy grinned back and then turned to Willow “what do you think that was, with the sizzling and smoking I mean”

Willow was studying the deodorant bottle and had her scientific face on. “I’m not sure, but I’m guessing that the demon’s skin reacted with some type of chemical component in this. I’ve got an idea on how we can beat it.”

Buffy smiled, good old Willow! “Shoot Will!”

“Well, I’ll take samples of the demons flesh from its head and I’ll get all the compounds of the deodorant. It’s really just going to be a mix and match thing but I’ll find what it reacts to and then concentrate it.” She looked at the deodorant bottle carefully “These chemicals are pretty easy to get, we should be able to pick them up from any underground drug store and when I figure out exactly what we need, Whammo! We’ll have instant Voglar -killin-juice!”

“Great Will! I’ll go tell Giles, do you need anything oh great scientific one?” She winked as she was walking off.

Willow grinned “nah I’ve got everything I need here. Though do you have any deodorant handy? I might run out of Anya’s and somehow I don’t think she’d be impressed.”

“With my rigorous daily routines? Please, I buy in bulk! Just look in the training room, good luck Will!” And with that Buffy jogged off to tell Giles the development, leaving Willow to smile to herself as she began to collect the beakers and tools she’d need.

*****

A few hours later she’d found the required concentrate; a chemical called propylene. It wasn’t the easiest to extract but she’d gotten it after a few tries. She found that as she did most experiments her mind could wonder and everything would seem simpler. This proved most helpful when it came to the sole occupier of her thoughts …

Tara

As she went through the painstakingly slow and complex process of concentrating the chemical from the deodorant she realised that if she wanted to even have a hope of fixing things she’d have to at least talk to Tara. It was worth a shot, at least she could say that she’d tried instead of keeping her distance and not even giving what they could have a chance. What we could have.. what could we have? Does she want to have what we could have? If we could have it…

Buffy’s voice brought her out of her musings “Hey Will, whachya doin?” She’d been watching Willow for over a quarter of an hour and caught on to the fact that she wasn’t all there.

Willow was still very much in her own world so without even thinking she answered what was in her heart “Just thinking about Tara”

She crashed back into her body at the realization of what she’d just said and who she just said it too, Buffy’s confused expression didn’t help either “Tara? Why? Do you think she’ll be able to help? Like you two do a spell or something.”

Goddess Buffy you’re a genius! Her mind flicked through all the spells she knew and one stood out “Yes! I’ve been thinking we could summon the Goddess Thespia to help us locate demonic energy. Different types of demons should have different colours so we’d be able to locate the Voglar nest in no time!” Willow was thrilled! This was the perfect way to see Tara because she knew that no matter what happened between the two of them Tara would never refuse to do a spell to help innocents.

Buffy was impressed; she didn’t think Willow was even close to being that advanced a witch yet. This Tara chick must be a really good witch err wicca, wiccan whatever! “Wow Will! That’d be great, Tara seems like a pretty capable uh.. girl.”

Willow smiled and nodded enthusiastically “Oh she is. She’s way more advanced than me but when we cast our energies always seem to find that perfect balance, she’s taught me so much already and I haven’t even known her for that long. I mean I can’t even imagine ever being at the level she’s at but she thinks I can. It’s all so exciting! There’s something between us, I can’t explain it but it’s there. Like our energies merge perfectly every single time we cast. Its amazing” She’s amazing. Willow put in as an after thought.

Buffy smiled at the thought before swooping her hand over her head and laughing “You’re way above me Will with that description but wow, sounds like a perfect match.”

A perfect match. Yeah I think you’re right Buffy.

Willow simply smiled before pouring the last of the liquid into a beaker.

“Okay! Here’s one batch, what do you think? Water balloons or super-soakers?”

The pair looked at each other, at the solution then back at each other before replying in unison “both”

Willow grinned before looking back to the solution and preparing herself for what was to come “So, I’m going to call Tara and see if she can do the spell with me. Are you up for some shopping?”

Buffy’s face brightened immediately “Shopping?! YES!” But she soon lost her spark as Willow continued with a knowing grin on her face…

“The drug store’s just across the street.”

The slayer grumbled before replying “Now that was just cruel! You shouldn’t interfere with the slayer’s shopping flaw, and speaking of! I am the slayer! Shouldn’t I be off, well … slaying … something instead of going to the very safe, very normal drug store across the road to buy a chemical?”

Willow smiled “Chemicals! More than one, that could make it more dangerous right?”

Buffy’s face took on childlike hopefulness “Yeah they could have a reaction and suddenly explode everywhere!”

“Actually, propylene and butane don’t have the correct molecular structure; it’s a scientific impossibility for them to cause a violent reaction or any reaction unl…” Willow stopped her scientific rant when she saw the look her best friend was giving her “okay okay, I’m stopping.. I’m sitting.. I’m looking scientific.”

Buffy smirked as she grabbed her purse and searched for a pen “So what am I looking for exactly?”

“You’re looking to get a few large bottles of propylene and however many bottles of that you can get your hands on buy half as much Butane” Buffy finished scribbling the names of the chemicals on her hand before walking out the door still grumbling about her trivial chore.

Willow smiled, now was her chance to ring Tara. She picked up the phone and dialed the blonde’s number. At least that’s what the plan was…

Ten minutes later and Willow still couldn’t get passed the third digit.

Come on you can do it. Just dial, there’s nothing to be afraid of, just dial! God could I be any more of a spastic? I’m not asking her to the prom! DIAL! Pulling her wandering mind away from what Tara would look like in an evening dress and, letting out a long contained breath, she dialed the numbers that she had memorized weeks ago. She was met with a dead line.

Although it was odd for Tara to have her phone off the hook Willow couldn’t help but be happy. It meant that she had a legitimate excuse to go see Tara in person! Just then Buffy ran in carrying bags filled with plastic bottles and water balloons behind her. Willow cringed I guess I’m not going anywhere for a while then.

Buffy dumped the heavy bottles on the counter and smiled “There ya go Will! I got some freaky looks from the girls there but I got them, I hope it’s enough.”

Willow simply nodded enthusiastically and began setting up her lab type environment. She sighed, knowing she’d be there for a while.

As the hours slipped away Willow continued to work hard. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to sleep until she was finished mixing the chemicals together, one part Butane two parts propylene, one part Butane two parts propylene. Gooo Rosenberg! Willow smiled to herself; she was too wired to sleep anyway. Because as soon as she was finished with the chemicals, that very instant, she was going to go to Tara’s and she was going to do everything in her power to make things right again.

Even if they would only ever be friends, Willow knew that she was hoping way too much to even think that a Goddess like Tara would be interested in a geek like her. And that’s assuming that Tara is even gay in the first place! Willow frowned softly and steeled her nerves again, whatever the outcome would turn out to be, she was already completely grateful for her Tara’s friendship, and her love.

*****

With the last of the mixture ready and the rest of the scoobies carefully pouring it into their own personal collection of water pistols and super-soakers Willow was finally getting ready to leave.

“Go Willster! Wow, you were like on super drive or something” “Yea tell me about it! Like I said she’s ‘science gal’ through and through” Xander and Buffy praised the redhead and though she was very flattered and thankful, in truth, it was all that was keeping her from bolting out the magic shop and flying over to Tara’s. She was just about to make her hopefully nonchalant exit before Giles spoke up.

“Yes good job Willow! You’ve done very well, all these supplies and in only a matter of hours!” Giles was genuinely impressed with the speed at which Willow had worked. He smiled at the hacker and, like the rest of the gang was completely oblivious to how anxious she looked.

Giving a slightly nervous laugh in thanks Willow crept to the door praying that she looked casual before saying “Thanks. So guys I’m going to go see Tara about that spell okay great have fun!” With that she was gone before any of the other scoobs could answer.

*****

As Willow walked through the stone pathways of the college she was filled with hope. Things were going to be okay, she didn’t know how yet, but they were.

As she looked up she stopped dead in her tracks in the middle of a pathway. Tara’s fairy lights were off. At first she thought that maybe Tara just wasn’t home but then she remembered. W-Willow, you know when you saw my window lights on and you came up. Well, they’ll always be on, d-don’t ever hesitate to come. Even if I’m n-not here and y-you just need um, a safe place to g-go? Please, don’t hesitate.

The redhead felt her heartbeat slow in steady, silent dread. Something’s wrong.

She felt it, felt someone; they had an dark presence. When she closed her eyes to try and focus all she could see was grey, and then she remembered. It was a foul type of fear.

All at once they hit her: images, flashing through her mind at speeds she almost couldn’t handle: a dusty driveway leading up to an ancient and broken house with wooden beams falling off onto the front porch.

A little blonde girl sat alone on the porch swing looking down, both aging and fresh bruises and cuts marred her porcelain skin. She looked lost for a second, just staring at her position before her features darkened and she looked down again. Willow inspected the figure and moved closer, the girl looked so innocent. After a short while she looked up and the two locked eyes. As blue met green thousands of tiny scenes were jammed into Willow’s mind; smells, tastes, sounds, they never seemed to end.

Boots, blood, steel caps, thuds, black, red, screams, cries, dust, vomit, sterilized smells, needles, more dust, more blood, more screams, more red. Death.

They wouldn’t stop coming; they poured into Willow’s mind from every direction possible. More sickening images and once again she saw the girl alone on the porch, this time cradling her side and wincing painfully. The girl looked up towards Willow; her eyes pleading a message the redhead didn’t understand. Willow froze.

She knew those eyes; no one on this earth had the same.

Oh Goddess … No..

The crying, the nightmares, the shudders, the pain. All the secrecy, the fear, the apprehension

Tara..

She tried her hardest to fight down the sickly feeling that was invading her stomach as she desperately sprinted to Tara’s dorm. She was so close but her legs were beginning to give out. She forced herself to push away the dizziness she was feeling because of the overloading visions mixed with her lack of sleep and pushed her body to continue running but she couldn’t take it.

Willow collapsed; her body thick with exhaustion, falling just short of the stairs leading into the Stevenson building. With all her remaining strength she crawled into a fetal position and let out a short broken scream before falling into darkness.

*****

Tara awoke quickly in a jolt. Her body throbbed from the sudden action: she felt like she hadn’t moved in days. Something’s wrong. She frowned and focused hard but her mind wouldn’t co-operate with her. She hadn’t eaten properly since they came.

Her room was trashed. Every crystal, every charm, everything she ever owned was smashed. Thousands upon thousands of tiny shards from all the various crystals he had crushed right before her eyes plagued the floor. He always did this. Everything that was ever hers he would take without a second’s thought and break. Even when they were kids, he would steal anything, everything and destroy it. It seemed Donny hadn’t changed much.

She hadn’t seen her father all day, which she was beginning to worry about. At least when he was there Donny couldn’t hurt her. Sometimes Tara just pretended to be asleep so he wouldn’t notice her though most of the time it just proved to anger him more. Violently slapping her across the face he’d wake her up and start telling her how evil she was, how much of a monster she would become.

But when her father was there all he could do was block out the day’s light with her thick, burgundy curtains and rave in an effort to convince her father to be more strict or forceful in disciplining her.

When it was just her and her father she’d sometimes escape the beating; it depended on the time of day and how angry he was. However the things he said were always that much more hurtful. He’d go on for hours about her mother and how evil she had become when it was her turn to change. How it broke his heart to have to be so harsh with her. She knew it was all lies but she’d never let him know that.

It was so much like being back at home again.

She forced herself to stop thinking about her situation and start to focus on the sickly feeling that invaded her body and caused her to jerk out of her fatigued slumber.

Focus Tara Focus.

She cleared her mind of the dark happenings of the past four days, or was it five? She’d begun to lose count after the second in an effort to convince herself that the days would go quicker. Pushing the sad fact aside she cleared her mind again and focused. After a few minutes she found it. It was a very faint magical trail; someone was doing a spell very near by. She could almost recognize the caster but something was different. It was out of control, like they weren’t willing anything to happen or it was a flawed reoccurrence of a previously cast spell.

Tara could tell the caster was in trouble so she reached her essence out towards the user and was immediately and violently thrown.

She didn’t know where she was but it seemed familiar, her body ached and as she looked around, the location stung her like a slap in the face. She was back at home on the porch. Her special place. It was where she went when she needed to get away. She wasn’t allowed past the edge of the patio so this was the furthest she could get without being punished. She shuddered at the thought. Suddenly she felt a presence join her and looked up.

Willow!

Throwing herself back to the real world she remembered where she was a moment too late and began to get up to run. Donny violently threw her back into the chair she was in, her ribs connected with the arm painfully and she let out a yelp.

“Dad told you to stay put didn’t he Tara?!” Donny spat as he pulled her close to him by the roots of her hair. “Now I’m gonna hafta inform him of you’re little problem with the rules aren’t I? Tara, if only you’d just listen it’d save us so much trouble. Now sit down before I beat you down!!”

Tara fell back into the chair. She had to get to Willow. Ignoring the blazing pain that was screaming for attention on her side she focused and once again reached out her essence. It took a little longer this time but she was once again on the porch, as she arrived the pain in her ribs increased tenfold so she grabbed her side and tried to control her breathing. She saw Willow’s essence, it was confused, scared and quickly reaching the point of exhaustion. She had to do something quick.

She looked into the essence and tried to communicate but she was only a memory. She could do nothing to help, despite her knowledge of this she kept on trying. Suddenly Willow’s essences darkened, it became panicked and full of fear. Tara didn’t understand what was happening, Willow was moving but where, why?

Then it hit her Oh Goddess, she knows…Tara also realised just where Willow was heading I’ve gotta stop her. Please Willow, please don’t come here, he’ll hurt you!

But Tara couldn’t do anything. She pulled herself away from the memory and this time was focused enough not to move when she returned to her present body. However what she heard next chilled her to her very core: a brief, erratic scream. It was Willow. Tara tried to reach out again, tried to find Willow, but it was too late, there was nothing. Nothing but darkness, nothing but shadow.

Willow was gone.

:( Very, very sad. I don't know if I can hold out for the next update, but I will hang in there with the hope that Tara's dad and brother will be eaten by these bug demons. That would be awesome. Preferably after those evil men have somehow been set on fire.

A very busy day ahead, so an early update is in order!

lonelylanding: hi! Thanks for stopping by, yes that chapter had a lot of badness, which is unfortunately continued for a while but hey, I'd like to highlight how, in my opinion anyway, experiences like this would have given Tara such a strong character. I would've liked to have seen more of Tara's past or it's effects on her on the show, that's for sure.

LonelyTara: Don't worry, I promise things get a lot better soon, you've gotta go through the bad to appreciate the good though right? :peace

In addition to the addition: As the one before it, this chapter has pretty high angst so you are hereby warned!

CHAPTER FIVE

The scoobs went on with their selected activities after Willow left until all the solution was stored in various ‘weapons’.

“We got enough of this stuff to barbecue an army of Voglar demons” Xander grinned as he pumped air pressure into his very manly-coloured pink super-soaker.

“Yeah they’ll see your ‘weapon’ and explode! What colour is that? Manly magenta? Poofy Pink?” Spike’s accent cut through the air as he entered the store.

“Spike don’t you have some poor defenseless human to be draining, oh no wait! You can’t do that anymore can you? And it’s not mine!! I’m borrowing Willow’s.” Xander went back to pumping pressure in the water gun.

“Yeah so I take it you’ve heard of the lil tripes invasion!” As he stepped closer it became apparent that the vampire had been in a few fights very recently. His left eye was completely closed over and his split lip had barely begun to heal.

“woah! What happened to you?” Buffy asked out of pure curiosity rather than concern. “Beating you up is kind of my job isn’t it?”

“Well, they know how to pick a location that’s for bloody sure!” Spike spat into the night air “They took over my crypt a few days ago. Been trying to get it back but they’re stealthy lil buggers.”

“Awww did lil Spikey get his ass whooped?” Xander put on a mock pout and smirked.

“Yea well, what can I say? Invisibility’s a bitch mate” Spike glared at Xander before turning back to Buffy.

“So you’re saying the whole nest is at your crypt?! Awesome! It’ll make them so much easier to kill!” Buffy smiled in satisfaction and began to load herself up with all the axes in the weapons chest. Throwing one to everyone in the room including Spike, she adjusted the axe on her back before starting for the door “Okay, let’s go” but she was stopped by Spike.

“Woah, woah, woah love hang on. You do know that there’s no way you’ll” he stopped at Buffy’s raised eyebrow “okay okay, we’ll be able to kill them with just axes and pink plastic guns”

“Relax Spike, we know how to stop them doing the invisible ‘thing’. One came in before and when it was sprayed with deodorant: don’t ask, it sizzled and stopped the whole invisibility trip. I went slayerish with the axe and poof! No more demon.”

Anya piped in with a hopeful correction “Actually it was more like sizzle! No more demon.”

Xander shuffled in his place and gave a tight grin “Thanks Ayn”

Spike frowned “I’m a little lost here pet.”

“Hey. In what insane alternate universe would I ever be your pet?!” Buffy began but was cut short by Anya who decided that adding in her opinion was beginning to be fun.

“Yes yes we can all feel the sexual tension. Now back to the issue at hand, so to speak! Basically the stuff in this manly pink gun and all these others will fry them into view and we’ll kill them with these.” She smiled, picking up an axe and throwing it over her shoulder “Very simple Spike. Now let’s go before a customer comes.” Anya stressed before ditching another smaller axe at Spike and walking out the door.

Xander grinned “that’s my gal!” and the four exited the building with their water balloons, super-soakers and axes in tow.

*****

After almost half an hour of searching for Willow Tara finally gave up. She was very near the point of exhaustion and was fighting to keep her breathing even so Donny wouldn’t suspect anything. She had one more thing left to try, it would take a lot of her remaining energy but it was her last hope. Taking long, deep breaths she focused her energy on Buffy and slowly but surely her essence reached the slayer.

Buffy, who was still following Anya to Spike’s crypt, stopped abruptly “Something’s wrong” she whispered to herself. She could feel something, no, someone, reaching out to her. There was trouble, she took a breath and closed her eyes while raising a hand to stop any of the other scoobs from talking to her, she focused.

Buffy? This is Tara, Buffy I need you to listen. Something was very wrong. “Tara? Willow’s Tara? Tara what’s going on? Why can I feel you? What’s happened?” Keeping her voice almost below a whisper at all times she fought to keep the connection giving most of her strength to ease the pressure off of Tara who seemed to be struggling with it.

Buffy, Buffy please listen to me, there’s not much time. Willow, she’s close, outside Stevenson building. Please hurry, I can’t find her, there’s only darkness…

And with that the connection was lost. Buffy was more than a little confused but she felt Tara’s distress and exhaustion through their connection so she was soon sprinting off towards the college. She dumped her supplies on Spike and as she ran she yelled a quick “I got a thing that needs doing! Go on without me guys!”

Giles followed her regardless and was doing his best to keep up with “Buffy! Buffy where on earth are you going?!”

When the slayer realised that she was being called after she stopped and saw Giles panting and desperately trying to reach her. She held onto his shoulder as he steadied his breathing and explained.

“It’s Tara, well, it’s Willow. It’s both! Tara reached out to me just then and told me Willow was in trouble at UC Sunnydale, outside the Stevenson building. I don’t know what’s going on but she felt a wicked shade of scared so, right now, I trust her completely. I’m gonna run ahead okay, if she is there we’ll meet you back at your place okay?”

Giles simply nodded and the two ran in their separate directions.

*****

As soon as the connection was broken Tara collapsed, though it wasn’t very noticeable as she was already slumped over her chair. She forced her eyes open purely out of instinct as she heard her father’s footsteps enter the room. As he entered she could see that he’d been drinking. This isn’t going to be good she thought as she concentrated on staying as still as possible. The pain in her side was getting worse and she had to shuffle in order to prevent herself from screaming. He saw her move and stalked over towards her immediately.

Slapping her violently with the back of his hand his words were slightly slurred “Don’t you move! I told you not to try and leave. I told you but you didn’t listen to me.” Slapping her again, this time harder he added “Just like your mother. Ungrateful bitch!”

Tara’s world blurred, her eyes couldn’t find focus but at least now the pain was evened out through her body. The pain in her face was a searing heat, it was like he’d poured hot wax on her skin and was just waiting for it to harden. She shuddered; thank God he wasn’t that imaginative. “Why are you here?” She let the sentence be whispered out before thinking of what the consequences could be.

Her father grabbed her by the shoulders roughly, his fingers digging into her soft skin, he shook her as he spoke “WHY? What do you mean WHY? You’re going to change Tara! You’re going to be so glad we came when it happens, when you finally become a disgusting, dangerous demon! We’re the only ones who will ever really love you Tara. NO ONE ELSE WILL EVER UNDERSTAND!” The tears in his eyes were barely visible as he pushed himself away from his only daughter.

But Tara knew better. When she was a little girl, no matter what her father said to her, in the secret moments her and her mother shared she made Tara promise to never believe anything about her ‘demonic side’.

Tara closed her eyes at the memory.

The room smelled like the fresh bread that her mother made every morning. The two were sitting on the kitchen table and Kathryn was teaching her young daughter how to levitate the leftover dough. While holding Tara’s hand passing on her energy to the small blonde she whispered in the soft soothing tone she never seemed to lose “The magic you hold is a gift little leaf, it’s bathed in purity. Don’t ever think it has a hidden evil. Feel the energy inside you; it is nature lending her strength to you Tara. Evil has no place there.” Giving Tara’s hand one last squeeze Kathryn let go and watched as her daughter softly floated the pliable blob around the room.

Tara took in a shallow breath. She often wandered how her mother had gotten through all the years and still remained so pure and good, tears formed in her eyes at the thought. Looking down at her father she was relieved when he seemed to be occupying himself with another drink, Buffy would be close to Willow by now. Pushing everything that was happening around her away, she finally let herself succumb to a shallow, troubled sleep.

*****

After Buffy and Giles’ bizarre departure the scooby gang and Spike had remained very quiet and begun to move faster.

“I wonder what the deal with Buffy is,” Xander said, breaking the silence as they entered the cemetery.

“It was odd, even for her” Spike voiced in his own concerned tone though he hoped the others didn’t pick up on it. The last thing he needed was to be labeled a softy for the slayer.

“Oh, she’s insane we all know that!” Anya stated with a short snort like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“Ayn! She is not.” Xander gave his girlfriend a tired look before continuing “She looked all slayery to me, I think something happened but we just couldn’t see it.”

Anya scowled in disbelief until, after another silence, he spoke up again to conclude the uncomfortable conversation, if it could even be labeled as one “Well either way Giles said to concentrate on barbecuing these Voglar demons … so that’s what we’re gonna do!”

The last of the sentence was said with effort as Xander strained to get Spike’s crypt door open. When he finally busted it open the three gripped their axes and super-soakers before entering to extinguish the nest.

Buffy had just run through the gates of UC Sunnydale when she saw the small figure of her best friend huddled up in a little ball on the stairs leading into Stevenson.

The image drove her to run faster and she was next to the frail hacker in no time. Buffy breathed a sigh of complete relief after checking the redhead’s pulse and feeling a strong but fast beat underneath her fingers.

”Willow? Will, wake up. WILLOW?” Buffy tried shaking the hacker to no avail. After several more failed attempts to shake her friend awake the slayer gave up and lifted both herself and Willow off the ground in one swift movement. Something was very wrong but she just couldn’t figure out what.

The redhead’s eyes were moving at an erratic speed under her closed lids; it was like the hacker was having a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from.

When she reached Giles’ apartment and set Willow comfortably down on the couch she began explaining what she knew to Giles.

“Okay Giles, Tara did something, I don’t know what it was but she reached out to me. It was like I could feel her around me and I don’t know why exactly but I trusted her right away. She felt … I dunno how to explain it … she felt, sincere and really really scared. Does that make any sense?” She questioned her former watcher who she hoped could still have all the answers.

“Well yes, quite a bit actually.” Giles smiled “It seems that Tara reached out her essence to you. A person’s essence is like their soul Buffy, their spirit, it’s what they’re made of. If you trusted her straight away than she must be a very honest person.” He took a sip of the tea in his hand before adding “Oh yes, Buffy. Who is Tara exactly?”

“Oh.. OH! Tara’s a friend of Willow’s; she’s a witch, obviously. I haven’t actually met her before but Will’s told me a bit about her. She seems like a really nice person. What I don’t understand is how Tara could’ve known something was wrong. I mean she wasn’t anywhere around when I got there.” The slayer was puzzled to say the least.

“Ah yes, a witch you say. Hmm.” Giles looked deep in thought before asking “So her and Willow have cast together before?”

The slayer inwardly pouted Okay, now I just feel dense! “Cast???”

Giles smiled “yes, cast spells”

“Oh yeah! They have, apparently Tara’s way more advanced than Willow but when they ‘cast’ their essences still combine perfectly.” Buffy proudly smiled happy to have finally had some information that was of use.

Giles took off his glasses and thought, “Buffy, when Tara’s essence reached out to you what did it feel like? Did you sense any deep distress?”

Buffy was quick to respond “Oh yea! She felt so horrible. Like she was really scared, kind of panicked. But also, she felt really tired. She was pushing exhaustion. Giles...” Buffy swallowed in helplessness “I don’t know what’s going on.”

Putting his glasses back on Giles held Buffy’s shoulder and became confident “I think that as a result of the various spells Willow and Tara have cast combined with the connection their essences seem to share, Tara was able to feel what happened to Willow. Whatever that was.”

The pair looked at the small hacker and saw she was shivering. As Giles went to get a blanket Buffy sat down near the trembling girl, smoothing her hand over the hackers forehead in an effort to try and relax her Buffy smiled and whispered “Don’t worry Will, we’ll get you back. I promise we’ll get you back.”

*****

Tara opened her eyes. She figured she must’ve been asleep for no more than ninety minutes because her father had just recently passed out. Tara closed her eyes and began to focus on all the natural energy that existed in her room to try and regain some of her lost strength. Though some of it was marred by her family’s visit after ten minutes she felt a lot better.

With her strength back, she once again let her thoughts travel back to Willow. She thought of all the possible ways she could help the redhead but her options were very limited. There was one way that stuck out in her mind somewhat but she would need to use her dolls eye crystal. She had put it under her pillow months ago to help her sleep but, as she thought back, she realised that since a certain redheaded had entered her life, she hadn’t had need for it. She had placed it next to her mattress under her bed.

For this to work Tara would first have to get past her father, who was currently slurping in his sleep on her mattress. She muttered a quick numbing spell she remembered once mentioning to the hacker and focused it on her ribs.

The relieving sensation in her midsection allowed Tara to relax into her chair for the first time in hours but no sooner had she relaxed she crept out of it and began moving towards her bed.

Tara was amazed at how stiff her body was. Her joints actually creaked when she moved them, she felt like a version of the tin man from The Wizard of Oz. She winced. The slightly more bruised and battered version of the tin man from The Wizard of Oz.

Taking slow, deliberate steps she focused on the floor to avoid stepping on any particularly busy areas. When she finally reached her bed she held her breath and bent down. Her father was mere centimeters away from her face under normal circumstances if they were this distance apart Tara would be trembling with fear, however these weren’t normal circumstances. Willow was in trouble. She was lost and Tara had to find her. She just hoped they were connected enough to do it.

She moved her hand under the mattress in painfully slow movements so not to wake her father from his drunken slumber. Her breath hitched as she felt the rough texture of the crystal under her fingers, she grasped it and began gradually sliding it out of place.

In the same moment as she wrenched it free her father gave a loud mumble and spun around onto his side. Tara ducked out of pure reflex to his flying hand and it narrowly avoided her face.

After taking a very short moment to get her breathing under control and quietly stretch Tara began to walk back to her chair.

After hiding the crystal in her sleeve she cast the numbing spell on her side again to prevent the pain from returning for another half an hour. With concentrated effort, she began to focus the crystal’s power on Willow.

*****

Buffy and Giles were completely lost.

“Giles, I think we need Tara to figure this one out. I mean, I think she knows more then she told me.” Buffy said in a concerned tone.

“Yes Buffy, I agree. But you don’t know her contact number do you?” Giles asked, he took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. He hated dead ends.

Buffy slouched “No. I don’t. But HEY! You could do the hacker thing and go on UC Sunnydale’s website. It’s got all the telephone numbers of the students living in dorm. My guess is there’d be more than one Tara but hey we gotta start somewhere right!” Buffy was practically jumping up and down in joy as she finished.

Giles gave a small smile before nodding “Yes, although I’m not the most advanced computer user I’m sure I could find something of use. I’ll go make myself a tea before logging on. Keep an eye on Willow, and don’t leave her side. Anything that happens could be of great importance.” And with that he was gone.

Buffy sat down beside the hacker again watching her friend’s eyes race around under their lids. What are you dreaming bout Will? Buffy thought as she continued to watch over the sleeping girl.

*****

Willow was floating along in the darkness. She didn’t know how long she’d been there or even where exactly ‘there’ was but she didn’t really care. The visions that had been forced upon her were still so fresh in her mind they cut at her insides like knives.

She didn’t care much about anything in this place. It was all a waste, a waste of time, a waste of life. She would begin to drift away even further but then a thought kept her where she was, Tara. She would think of the gentle blonde and be at peace, but, inevitably hate would follow, not for Tara but for her family, for her father.

Willow didn’t think it was possible for her to hate a human as much as she hated Tara’s father. It popped and sizzled inside her and she fought very hard to suppress it.

Willow looked around her as she suddenly she felt something approach. It was the most calming presence she had ever experienced. It was warm and relaxing, it cradled Willow. She felt like she had just let go of a breath she didn’t even know she was holding.

Bathing herself in what she was beginning to recognize as complete and utter bliss, Willow floated further and further away from where she had been just before. It was like she was drawn to the center of the presence by some mystic force she couldn’t detect. As she grew nearer, a smile graced her lips.

Oh, she knew who this was.
