SMGOVAN - Yeah, I'm back. Where would the fun be in Willow turning her brain off? I just started the next part and that's all about the fact that Willow's brain doesn't turn off. Even when it should LOL. Glad you enjoyed it :)

LonelyTara - Hey, thanks very much. Nice to see someone else can make pussy puns in this thread. It is to be encouraged!

Thanks again both of you.

Katharyn

Great fiction! Once I wrote a fiction like this, I feel like it's the basis of all of our fascination with W&T - the speculation about how they got together.

Thanks very much knightlylove.

There is something about this period of their time together. It's pure, untainted and frankly was underwritten in the canon. It's almost back to the beginning for me as I wrote quite a long 'missing scenes' fic years ago (back in about 2001/02) which I loved doing. This is just more fun though :)

Katharyn.

Hey anyone who cares enough to click here. Not an update I am afraid but just to say that this month's update will be slightly delayed. It exists and just needs redrafting however I am pushed for time at the moment so it will be closer to the end of the month than the start of it.

Why? (I hear you ask since the last part was 23rd Jan anyway... or not.)

Well, I'd never usually explain myself away but this one I feel like sharing.

Basically... I'm writing lesbian porn :D

Not porn as in a movie but where the whole book is devoted to sex between a variety of women who just can't keep their hands off each other. So actually, kinda like fan fiction but with different names and no 'hackers'

In my own defence (in case you had illusions about me) I have a cool concept that I think really flies and each of the linked short stories is based around exploration of character as well as *cough* bodies. Seriously. In a world without censors you could make this into quite an arty movie. With naked women :)

I just figure I can get porn published more easily than anything else through the queer friendly publishing houses!! I mean, sci-fi and fantasy writers frequently branch out into romance to earn a living. Why not porn!? So... until the initial rush of writing this fades a little I will keep up with the porn. And deliver the humour of T&W (no porn) to you guys. See how much I care about kittens? I care enough NOT to give you T/W sex... Yes. And I would respect you in the morning too. :)

Thank you so much for the porn support :)

That project is about 3/4 done now - at least the first draft - and so far it's embraced a lot of... variations.

In a moment I'll post the latest T/W Processing part.

Title: Processing – What we do
Author: Katharyn Rosser
Feedback: Constructive criticism is always welcome. Flames just demonstrate you have a tiny mind.
Spoiler Warning: Probably none, and why the hell do we need to worry about this years after the show went off the air? Suffice it to say nothing bad ever happened to our girls.
Distribution This story was written for Pens. Pens is its home. No archiving off Different Coloured Pens (This applies to all my W&T fic)
Summary: Late at night, after the girls’ have had their fun, Willow wakes from a dream and…
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the copyrights or anything else associated with BTVS. All rights lie with the production company, writers etc, etc. I am making zilch from this series of stories. You know the drill.
Rating: Well, so long as you can cope with repetition of the word ‘Dildo’ then you won’t be offended.
Couples: Tara and Willow forever. I doubt I’ll even mention anyone else.
Notes: No pet of mine has ever been doinked in this way.
Thanks To: This one is for Xita who once had a conversation with me about me writing naughty – non-W/T fiction. Hey, I’m doing it :D

Processing

What we do

By

Katharyn Rosser

Willow jerked awake with a start, sitting up in the dark.

Fairy lights sparkled to either side of her, one set was real and the other reflected in the mirror on the other side of the room. She was breathing hard, a little clammy she could tell and totally, delightfully, butt naked.

Okay, she knew where she was now. The last part of that gave it away, she really had no naked time apart from here, least ways not that didn’t involve a shower.

She was in Tara’s room. Tara’s bed. She was Tara’s woman. Reality all came back together and reality was pretty fine today – tonight – thank you very much.

A hand touched her back, circling up and down gently. “You’re awake?” she asked. Like Tara did that in her sleep.

“You woke me a little while ago,” Tara said. “You were dreaming.”

“Sorry.”

“No, it was… cute.”

“Cute?”

“You were making little whimpers,” Tara said.

That didn’t sound too great. Were whimpers…? Well, okay. Some whimpers were good. She’d heard some whimpering at the moments that – well, she heard them in the moments that things didn’t get much better. But in a dream? What had she been dreaming about? It was fading… and she didn’t feel sexy so it hadn’t been one of those dreams.

And why dream it when you could live it anyway? She got plenty sexy enough being a naked lesbian in this bed for naked lesbians.

“I feel…” What did she feel? “I feel weird.”

“M-must’ve been an intense dream,” Tara told her. “Lie down.”

“Oh, yeah.” She rolled as she lay down, wrapping her around Tara and putting her head on her lover’s shoulder. Adjusting, seeking. Yeah, that was the spot. Right there when Tara’s arm came around her. It was almost reflex on Tara’s part and she’d been the one to discover it. Rest your head right here and Tara Maclay would hold you.

Cause and effect.

“Want to tell me about it?” Tara asked.

“I don’t think… I don’t know if I remember it.”

“Fair enough.” Tara kissed the top of her head and there was a sense of finality to the gesture.

So she lay there a while, Tara’s fingertips stroking her hair, her neck until they too – eventually – stilled. And she was still wide awake.

“What time is it?” she asked.

“Huh?”

“Oh, baby. Did I wake you? Again?”

“Hnn, no – I mean, did you?”

“What time is it?” Willow repeated. The only clock they could see in the dark was on Tara’s side of the bed.

“I can’t see,” Tara said, masking the fact that she had – probably – been at least a little asleep. Just nodding off.

“Look, would you?”

Tara moaned, rolled away from her and then probably found that the weight on her shoulder wasn’t going anywhere so probably just craned her neck instead. Willow was doing her best to be accommodating, she did that here – she was accommodation girl but this was just so damn comfy that… Her hand found Tara’s breast and that was comfy too.

“Will - ”

Tara managed to get her arm out and reach to try to get to the clock. There was sort of muffled crash and both of them froze at the sound of Miss Kitty yowling in protest. “What was that?” she asked.

“Umm.”

“What was it?”

“It’s two-thirteen.”

“What was that?”

Tara sighed. “It was – it fell on her.”

“What did?”

“The toy.”

“Oh… Ohhh.”

Yeah, they’d been experimenting with mail order – okay, not with mail order but what you could get through mail order and naturally enough when they were plum tuckered out – both of them had been quite enthusiastic – they’d left it there and now…

“Poor Miss Kitty.”

“It’ll teach her to set up her bed under ours,” Willow said. Yeah, she was deflecting the guilt of having put it there. But what was she supposed to have done? Gotten up to put it away? Left Tara here alone in this big empty bed for several seconds? Possibly even a minute? No, that just hadn’t seemed appealing in the glowing aftermath of physical and emotional bliss.

Tara was still grunting, straining. “What are you - ”

“I think the harness is caught on something - ”

“Leave it,” Willow said. “Leave it, it’s late. She won’t bother with it and it already needs – well, it needs a proper wash anyway.”

“I guess,” Tara said. “Did you keep the instructions?”

“Don’t you know by now? I read the instructions. We’ll boil and sterilize it.”

“You make it sound so sexy,” Tara said, with a sigh. Finally leaving it alone.

“Well, good night,” Willow said.

“I’m all awake now.”

“And that’s my fault?”

“Umm, yeah,” Tara said. “Kind of.”

“So…” Willow was waiting. This was about as judgemental as Tara had ever gotten with her and she was still as mild as… well, something that was really, really mild.

“So I’m all awake.”

“You want to snuggle?” Willow said hopefully, running a thumb over the somewhat softer-than-she-liked-to-remember-it tip of Tara’s breast.

“If you meant literal snuggles, then probably. But since I think you probably mean… well, something else. I don’t think that’d be a great idea,” Tara said, but she sounded reluctant. Open to persuasion. Except they both had class first thing and… yeah. Practicality won the night.

“What do you want to talk about?” Willow asked.

“I don’t – I don’t think I said I wanted to talk,” Tara said.

“Well, you didn’t want to snuggle and you’re all awake so… talking?”

“There was something you were going to ask me, earlier. You know, before we opened the mail.”

Never had opening the mail been quite as… rewarding as that had turned out to be. Not even when she’d gotten her college acceptance letters. And the box had been addressed to Miss Maclay and Miss Rosenberg. It’d seemed better to send it here, because if it’d gone to Stevenson then a) Buffy might’ve opened it on her behalf – disaster – and b) she wouldn’t have been able to stop herself and seeing the look in Tara’s eyes…

Her sweet Tara, so overcome by shock/surprise/desire/lust. It’d been a sight to behold. One she hoped to remember almost as long as she would looking down into those eyes while they…

Couldn’t they snuggle?

“I’m sorry,” Willow said. “What?”

“You were going to say something, before you got like that. Forgetful. You were thinking about it again, weren’t you?” Tara accused.

“Weren’t you?”

“Not right at that moment.”

“But now you are,” Willow guessed, hearing the shift in Tara’s tone.

“We can’t – it’s so late!”

“I didn’t even suggest it. My lips were sealed.”

“Your lips were devilish,” Tara told her, yawning. “Not just your lips.”

“Not very sealed either,” she said, recognising the flaw in the statements.

“Not really.”

“So… the thing,” Willow said.

“It fell in Miss Kitty’s bed - ”

“No, not that thing. The thing, I wanted to say. Actually it’s more of a question. Really it’s someone else’s question and I should know what to say, I should I know that because – hey, plenty of experience here now – but I was stuck and I didn’t know what to say and maybe you do and – and - ”

“Breathe, baby.”

She inhaled as instructed.

“Now, what is it?” Tara asked.

“Today… Well, I got asked the question.”

“Ah, the question.”

So Tara knew what she was talking about. That’d make things easier. “Yeah.”

“What question?”

Oh. “One of those questions I really should’ve been expecting. I mean, you know, I can anticipate test questions – I’ve always been able to focus in on what’s important and figure out what they’re going to ask. So I should’ve known this was coming - ”

“Will.”

“Sorry. Well, this is one of those questions. You know how I’m a lesbian?”

“I’d noticed.”

“And not everyone is, in fact most people aren’t.”

“Uhuh.”

“Well, I guess some people who aren’t are curious about the people that are – or not about the people but more the thing itself.”

“The lesbian thing?” Tara checked.

“That’s it exactly.”

“You know someone who’s curious?”

“Buffy. Buffy’s curious.”

“Buffy’s curious?”

“Buffy’s curious.” There, they seemed to have that sorted. Buffy, her roommate, was curious. And how awkward was that? Coming out to her was supposed to be… it wasn’t supposed to involve curiosity. She had the pamphlet and that was never mentioned.

“How curious…?” Tara asked.

“Pretty curious,” Willow replied.

“No, I mean… curious curious or curious.”

“Ohhh… No. I mean no, not curious. Not like bi-curious or anything like that sort of curious. I mean – yes, she boffs the undead. Or she has, but that’s about the limit of her divergence from the…” What was the word? “Hetero-norm?” Was she allowed to say that? Not ‘normal’ because she felt pretty damn normal and natural and all those other things when she was being at her most lesbianish with Tara.

But ‘hetero-norm’? That wasn’t judgemental was it? Not being able to see Tara’s expression she couldn’t tell if there was a reaction but frankly even that had to be better than Tara thinking her girlfriend’s roommate was bi-curious because that wouldn’t be a barrel of laughs.

“So Buffy - ”

“Yeah, she boinks the undead. Not exclusively, there’s been a few boys in there too – TA’s even. But yeah, boinking has been pretty much of the undead variety and who hasn’t had that fantasy?”

Once again it was one of those moments she’d said too much.

“Not that – no I mean, yeah he was pretty boinkable but that wasn’t my undead fantasy. I mean – no – my undead fan - It was a vampire you know, my undead fantasy was a female vampire. Except – kind of me. Did I tell you that was the first time I even considered that I might be – no, that sounds all wrong. Not because of her – I mean me. The first - ”

“Will, stop digging.”

“Right.”

“Buffy?”

“Yeah. Well, Buffy’s like totally… ‘What is it you do, Willow?’ and I’m like ‘What do you mean?’ and she tells me what she means.”

“And you couldn’t answer?” Tara asked.

“Well, I could – but you know that thing I do when I branch out into too much information?”

“Hmm?”

Yeah, she could imagine that Tara was familiar with the concept by now. “Well, I was definitely trying to avoid that and then I was thinking – what do I say? I mean, it never came up before. Everyone knew what I was doing then. Not because I told them, because I didn’t but because they just knew. It was what they did too and – even though I’m pretty sure Buffy’s seen some pornos I wouldn’t like to compare what we do with any of those!”

And that didn’t sound at all judgemental. Oh no.

“Not that,” she added, “what we do is worse than that. It’s better, clearly but also it’s not representative.” Then she thought about what Miss Kitty had in her basket. “Except when it is.”

“I see your problem,” Tara said.

“You do?”

“Not really.”

Willow sighed. “I… You know I’m not ashamed of you right?”

“I know.”

“And you know I’m not ashamed of being a lesbian? I mean, I’m down with dykes. One dyke. With you, going down, I mean. But - ”

“I know.”

“I just didn’t know what to say. How do you answer a question like that?”

“You c-could try the truth?” Tara suggested.

“What? All of it?” Willow was horrified. Open was one thing and Buffy might’ve been her best friend, the one person before Tara that she could really tell anything at all – even the girly things that you certainly wouldn’t want to say to a certain Xander Harris – but telling Buffy…?

When she’d said ‘tell me everything’ a few years ago to Buffy? She hadn’t really meant it. And she hadn’t gotten chapter and verse either.

“No. You could say that we make love, maybe give her a clue what that means.”

“I guess… I don’t think… I don’t think she gets it. Buffy is a fan of the peen.”

“Willow!”

“Sorry, but there it is. I think maybe she has a problem knowing what it means when there isn’t one involved.” There it was, that was how it had come across to her. “Of course, after tonight…”

“Willow…” Tara started to warn.

“Okay, I get it. Tonight and what is currently laying in Miss Kitty’s basket was/is totally not about that. I get it. Just not. So… help me?”

“I thought I did,” Tara said.

“No, you said hint. I don’t do hint very well. Remember the last time you asked me to hint? I told that lady at the coffee shop who was trying to set me up with her son that I was a big old dyke.” Literally. Big. Old. Dyke. By anyone’s definition, only one of those statements was true.

Tara paused. “Okay, I admit, ‘hint’ might’ve been the wrong word. D-do you want me to talk to her?”

“No!”

“Oh.”

“Not ‘no I don’t want you to talk to her’ but ‘no I don’t want you to talk to her about that’” Willow corrected hastily, seeing where she might just have made a boo-boo. After all it’d taken Tara that long to get brought into the circle of her friends and that had taken so long purely because of her.

Because I wanted something that was all mine. Just mine.

“Okay,” Tara said, sounding much happier. “Because, I don’t know what I’d have said.”

“Aha! You too.”

“No - ”

“You said it,” Willow said, “You said you didn’t know what you’d say, which is exactly my problem.”

“Because I don’t know her that well and it’d be weird.”

“I do know her that well and it would very definitely be weird. Maybe I should like, leave a book lying around?” It was a thought, and – she thought – not a bad one. She could facilitate the transfer of knowledge in as much detail as Buffy could stand without actually getting involved in it herself.

“That’s not a bad idea,” Tara said.

“You think?”

“I think if she really wants to know, if she’s not just making conversation and trying to be cool with it - ”

“You really think that might be what it is?” Willow asked. She hadn’t thought of that. But yeah, that was totally what Buffy was like. When she realised she should be supportive of something then she’d definitely feign an interest. It wasn’t that she wasn’t supportive, necessarily; just that she wouldn’t know how to express that. Buffy could be a little princess-of-the-universe self-absorbed. And thatw as okay, because she had to save the world on a regular basis.

And if she’d gone back and said all the things that did happen when two women were in bed – while he wasn’t at all sure she and Tara had reached ‘all the things’ just yet – then that would’ve been very, very weird.

Not withstanding previous conversations about Buffy’s personal life. But hey, she’d been boinking a vampire. A gorgeous one at that.

But a book… “What book?”

“Umm.”

“You don’t know a book? What kind of suggestion is that if you don’t know a book?”

“It was just an idea,” Tara said, a teeny bit defensive. “I never – look, I never did the reading.”

Willow was caught between giggling and genuine surprise. Since she’d come into the awareness of who she was she’d done plenty of reading, from all sorts of sources. The book store clerk, as well as the librarians who checked out her books, must’ve had a fair idea about her by now. But Tara hadn’t done the reading? That sounded more like a reason for why her homework wasn’t in on time.

“Never?”

“No. Well, I mean… If I heard that there was some scene in a book then I might look it up. I didn’t have much to go on, but it wasn’t like the library back home was blessed in the LGBT department.”

“Bookstores neither?”

“Nope.”

“That sucks.”

“Different part of the country,” Tara said.

“Sounds like a different world.”

“California is the different world.”

That was a conversation for another day – night – early morning. Right now… “There’s that ‘Wet Sex’ book?”

“Might gross her out,” Tara said.

“Really?”

“Think about the title. Could be… misleading.”

“Ohh.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m sure, just because your dirty minx mind went there,” Willow said, “Buffy wouldn’t. Because I mean, eww. And not at all referenced.”

“It might.”

“Perhaps something simpler like… an encyclopaedia?” Willow suggested next.

“You know of such a thing?” Tara asked.

Yeah, that might be a little bit of a hindrance. “I could always check - ” Willow started. It wouldn’t take but a second but Tara’s hand restrained her. “What?”

“No computers after bed time,” Tara said.

Oh yeah, that. She had made a promise. What with all the Scooby stuff ‘bed time’ was a flexibly timed concept, but generally once her daytime clothes came off – and no matter what went on, or didn’t – that was bedtime. “I’m sure someone wrote one. Or I could leave a regular encyclopaedia open at a relevant page.”

“But which? And… I might be wrong but I don’t think they go into much details, even if they cover whatever you’re thinking of.”

“You’ve looked these things up, haven’t you?!” Willow was triumphant to have realised it. That… It made them kind of the same.

“I… tried. I was young, I had feelings and nothing to understand them with so… I went to the library.”

“And came away disappointed?”

“Actually,” Tara said. “There was enough there, over an afternoon, that I came away with ideas. One word led to another to another and…”

“I’m so proud of you,” Willow said, re-emphasising the hug and taking a moment to tweak her girl’s boob. Her girl. Her boob, in a way. Boob… great word. “And I told you words had power.” Okay, so Tara hadn’t denied that. Just the necessity of an approved words list.

“But it’s not solving your problem is it?” Tara wondered, stroking her hand as well as her hair now.

“I think maybe you just made the point that if Buffy is curious enough, she can go to the library. It’s entirely possible she hasn’t found that on campus yet anyway.”

“Willow. That’s mean,” Tara said.

“No, seriously. It’s genuinely possible. I mean, in High School she checked out only one book despite hanging out in the library – before it blew up – all the time. And that one book, she had it until she’d racked up forty five dollars of late fees.”

“Really?”

“Truly. She’s my friend and all, but Buffy and books? They don’t do the mixing thing. But maybe that’d all change if she was on a mission?”

“A mission to…”

“Figure out what women did together.”

“I doubt it.”

“You want to explain it to her?” Willow asked. “Because she might ask, she – like I – has been known to ask totally inappropriate questions from time to time.”

“Really?”

“Okay, she’s unlikely to muse of the lubricating qualities of olive oil while cooking dinner in a kitchen full of your dorm-mates,” Willow said. “But that wasn’t a suggestion about the oil. More of a comparison. Looking for the right thing to pick.” Not that she’d needed it with the… “Tara, baby. Pick it up. Before Miss Kitty decides to…”

“What?”

“I don’t know. But she might do something catty with it.”

“You really want me to move?” Tara asked, clearly as comfortable as she was.

“No, but… It’s Miss Kitty.”

Her lover sighed and rolled from under her. Willow looked on as, in the dim light, Tara was caught in glorious profile. Boobs… lovely, lovely boobs. No need to go look those up. She was, pretty much officially, a Tara Maclay boob expert. More than that she was a boob girl, Tara herself had declared it.

Admittedly after some overt fascination which had been mutually rewarding.

“Okay?” Tara asked, putting their recent delivery aside in what Willow hoped was a safer place. “What?”

Willow was giggling. “Nothing.”

“Will, tell me. Bad enough we’re awake at this time, I don’t need to be kept up wondering what you were giggling at. Was it me - ?”

“I have two new words for the list, baby.”

“The list? Uhuh.”

“The list is important. We agreed this.”

“I’m pretty sure that I just stopped talking about it,” Tara said quietly.

“See! We agreed.”

“There’s a lot of Sheila Rosenberg in you, young lady,” Tara said.

“Now that’s just mean. Do you want to hear the words or not?”

“So long as you promise not to get up and add them right now?”

“I promise,” Willow said equitably. Give a little to get a little and she’d been getting a lot for a while now.

“Okay then,” Tara said. “Tell me.”

“First…” Willow pulled Tara’s arm around her again, resting her head right where it had been. Once they were sleepy again then she’d move, but for now this was comfort. This was home.

“That’s n-nice.”

“I think so,” Willow agreed. “Word number one. Ready?”

“Go for it.”

“Doink.”

“Doink?”

“Yeah.”

“Give me context?” Tara asked.

“Well,” Willow said, wondering what she could come up without using word number two. “Can I move to word two and do it all in one go?”

“For sure.”

“You’ll know this one, cos you know you’ve been done with it.”

“Uhuh?”

“Miss Kitty got doinked with a dildo.”

“Will!”

“She did! And I think – I want dildo on the list. Doesn’t it just roll off the tongue?”

“You tell me,” Tara said making reference to what had happened earlier.

“Minx. Don’t you like the word?”

“Dildo?”

“Yeah.”

Tara considered that, said it under her breath a couple of times. “Dildo. Dildo.”

“Good, huh?”

“Approved,” Tara said.

“I knew you would.”

“Because we had fun? There are other words that we didn’t approve but still liked doing.”

“True,” Willow said. “But you’re a dildo girl, I can tell.”

“Never say that to anyone else,” Tara pleaded.

“Perish the thought! It’s only for me. You’re only for me.” She delivered a kiss where her lips lay.

“Good. And Willow… not everyone might know what ‘doink’ means. So…”

“I won’t use it in that context again,” she promised. After all it wasn’t like it was going to happen again now was it? How often could a young cat get doinked by a dildo? It was a once in a lifetime event, surely?

“Good.”

“I remembered a little of my dream,” she said.

“Really?”

“I fell in love with this insanely beautiful, sexy girl.”

“Oh?”

“Uhuh.”

“What did she look like, this girl?”

“Like I said, baby. Insanely beautiful. Sexy. Helen of Troy time, but you know – at the time her face launched a thousand ships, not now - ”

“Willow. Spoiling it.”

“Yeah, well, I fell for this girl. Hard.”

“I’ve seen how you do that,” Tara said. “I can imagine.”

She just loved that Tara could say something like that now, not doubting for a moment that she was the simple cause of the real world version. “Well… I fell for her, I spent a lot of time with her. We made food together, made love and made lists - ”

“No way, you did not dream the lists.”

“I might have,” Willow said, defending herself against the accusation that she’d justify some of her more meticulous habits through the recounting of a dream. “I don’t remember.”

“So why did you wake up like you did?” Tara asked, obviously sleepy as she said the words through a yawn.

“Because it was a dream and when I woke up, it couldn’t be that wonderful. I was terrified of that. Losing what was in the dream.”

“And?”

“And it’s all real.” She kissed Tara, firmly and passionately on the lips. “It’s real. You’re real and we’re real.”

“We are,” Tara said simply.

They lay there a little longer and she started to recognise the signs of Tara drifting off to sleep once more and when she tried to pull her head away, to make them both more comfortable and less likely to wake each other again, she was insanely pleased that even in semi-consciousness Tara pulled at her. Possessive, wanting her right where she was.

“This, this is what we do,” Willow murmured.

Zampsa - That's not a bad idea. Poor Buffy, I only ever mention her to pick on her LOL. Thanks.

Laragh - Do you just sit around watching the board? LOL. You have said about the banter before, which is probably why I've done a few banter heavy parts recently. Maybe I need to branch out next time...

On the other hand this stuff writes itself!

Indigokane - There is much to be said for book learning, but I always approved of the practical experimentation more than that! Thanks.

edob - Umm, you mean am I so mad as to have the list of the list that Willow has? LOL... Only by looking back at this and adding more great words. I am sure 'the list' will rear it's head again :) Thanks.

LonelyTara = Oh yes, it is grand. And actually I stole that line and put it in my *cough* porn *cough* story (not W/T) which I nearly finished :) Glad you liked it.

Thanks all,

Katharyn

Knightlylove - Thanks for that. Their banter was always cute and - as I've said before - writes itself once I'm in the mood and get into the flow. Buffy curiosity... well... why not :)

Dildoes = boring? That's a matter of opinion and there's some people I know who'd debate you fiercely LOL. However for the purposes of the story it's a good word and has comic potential. There is no other criteria for inclusion :) Besides, it had to fit with 'doink'

Hi Wayland, thanks for that.

Of course the real life version of that quote you mentioned is more of a violent reflex. Touch X person in Y place and she's likely to fling her arm out and strike Z in the face LOL.

For T&W it seemed better this way!

See, I knew there were some dildo fans out there... :)

I am now ashamed that I didn't make that kind of pussy joke at the time of writing. Good call SMGOVAN

Oh... guess what I've been writing the last few days.

No, not Lesbo Porn (finished in first draft)

No, not the next part of this (finished in first draft)

Sidestep 3... Since you were the one who pushed it on me and led to thoughts... It'll be much tighter and more controlled. A story that doesn't ramble so much. But I do believe there's a worthy story there. Several chapters in (first draft) and once I am certain I have the rest of the story mapped then I'll start to revise and post...

It's the power of three.

Katharyn

Title: Processing – Gone Fishin
Author: Katharyn Rosser
Feedback: Constructive criticism is always welcome. Flames just demonstrate you have a tiny mind.
Spoiler Warning: Probably none, and why the hell do we need to worry about this years after the show went off the air? Suffice it to say nothing bad ever happened to our girls.
Distribution This story was written for Pens. Pens is its home. No archiving off Different Coloured Pens (This applies to all my W&T fic)
Summary: Tara ends up fishing with Ira…
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the copyrights or anything else associated with BTVS. All rights lie with the production company, writers etc, etc. I am making zilch from this series of stories. You know the drill.
Rating: Umm, no fish metaphors hereabouts.
Couples: Tara and Willow forever. I doubt I’ll even mention anyone else.
Notes: So I know nothing about fishing and I’m too lazy to do the research. Live with it! This one comes from a desire to see Ira back. Y’all responded well to him and its always fun to write an out and out supporter. Which made it strange that I have issue the following note…
I wanted to stay away from it, I didn’t want this series to be angsty and linked to ‘Family’ but when I found myself writing what I did, there was really no way to stay away from it. And ultimately, if we’re saying these are the things that happened around and between canon, then you have to deal with that whole issue. So… a little less fun this time. It’s not an angst part, but it makes references to concerns Tara simply must’ve had. And I think it ends in a good place. I’ll tell you up front that it ends with Tara believing that her ‘fate’ isn’t what it appeared to be. It ends with some hope and will let me move on past this ‘ignoring’ it all over again…
Thanks To: My Dad, who has certain Ira like qualities to him. Nothing you could point to and say ‘that’s from there’ but add it all up and he’s always been more than I ever hoped he could be. Thanks Dad.

Gone Fishin

It was a sad time.

It was a sad and exciting time.

It was a sad, exciting and special time.

People were starting to pack up and leave to mark the end of the college year. Maybe they’d finished up their exams already. Maybe they’d gotten everything they could out of the library and wanted to get back home, see their friends and generally get out of here. Whatever the motivation, there were plenty of people doing just that.

She’d had no-less than three hugs today and only one of them had been from Tara.

Under the circumstances Willow didn’t consider that Tara would be in a jealous rage about that, even if she knew. First of all there was nothing to it – obviously – and secondly the very idea of Tara Maclay in a jealous rage was… incredible.

Incredibly unlikely cos, you know, Tara was Tara and Tara didn’t do jealous rage. If she had, she probably wouldn’t have been very good at it either, and that was just an observation. She wasn’t being unsupportive.

Also, Willow had to admit, Tara in a jealous rage might well be more than a little sexy.

On the other hand there weren’t many scenario’s featuring Tara that she couldn’t make sexy, at least in her imagination.

But it was a point of no small pride to her that they hadn’t needed to have make-up sex even once. And that was something to be proud of because they’d had nothing to make up for, no fights or disagreements that’d merited that kind of re-bonding.

But again, on the other hand (she was running out of other hands), she couldn’t help thinking that maybe she was missing out on something that would’ve been special. It was a very small, very private part of her. One that she didn’t often listen to because it had the dumbest – if interesting – ideas.

But the idea of hurting Tara in any way? It made her shiver enough that make-up sex lost all it’s attraction. Lets face it, they just weren’t dramatic enough to make that work for them.

Thinking of Tara though… Where was her witch?

Standing in the doorway to the dorm room they practically shared - after letting herself in with the only-slightly-illegal copy of the key that they’d had made - there was no sign of her woman. Which was not a good thing, after all it was Saturday morning and she had this whole riff about how sad it all was that everyone was leaving already worked out. She was pretty sure that Tara would’ve agreed with her.

Now she was going to have to be sad and alone here too?

Thing was, she never quite felt alone when she was in Tara’s space. Not totally. There was always a presence here, in her room. A delicate mixture of scents both natural and artificial – even when the window had been open to air the place out after they’d stayed in last night.

But yeah, where was Tara?

There was a note though. Ironically enough it was on top of the pile of books Willow’s lover had sworn she had to get through this weekend.

‘Gone fishing’

Now what in all the hells did that mean?

----------------

“It’s been a while, Sir.”

“If I’ve told you once, Tara, I’ve told you three or four times…”

“Sorry.” She had been told, more than once. Maybe even the number of times that he’d said. Don’t call him ‘Sir.’

Trouble was, she was an old fashioned girl at heart. She called her own father ‘Sir’, so how could she do any less for Willow’s? Seriously, it was pure instinct that was at work on her rather than being obstinate or pig-headed.

They’d been largely sat in silence for the last hour since arriving here and setting themselves up. Wherever ‘here’ actually was. Up in the hills outside of Sunnydale there was a lake. Who’d known there was a lake? Willow was a native and she’d never mentioned it but a lake there was… Weird how, in this town, you had virtually everything on your doorstep.

The ocean.

Woods.

Hills.

Hellmouth.

If someone had shown her a mountain that you could ski on in winter she wouldn’t have been surprised, even though she certainly wouldn’t have skied. That required more coordination than she was probably capable of for all that she’d successfully decoupled the movements of say tongue and fingers.

But a crystal clear lake – she hadn’t asked if it’s was the name was anything like that – where no one else seemed to have come for a while… Wow. Hidden secrets or what?

Evidently Willow’s father, Ira, was just about the only person who visited it and yet they’d driven up here, to about a mile away, and then carried their stuff over to the lakeside.

The whole experience was pretty surreal. After all he’d just turned up, without calling ahead. When she’d explained that Willow was out, not expected back for a while, he’d said that was just fine because it was her he’d come to see.

And he’d come to take fishing?

Okay, so leaving a note like that for Willow? Yeah, she was going to get all sorts of questions thrown at her the next time she saw her girlfriend and it would have to wait until then because there was like zero cell reception up here.

And that was another little anomaly about the area. Men had sent text messages from the Himalayas in order to get rescued, but she couldn’t get reception in the middle of California? What was up with that?

Hellmouth… probably. Most things around here were because of that when you got right down to it.

Except from Ira Rosenberg’s point of view there was no such thing. Blissful ignorance and one that she wasn’t about to disturb by getting onto the topic of their witchiness either.

‘And just why is it my daughter does spells with you, Tara?’

‘Well, Sir – Ira, it started out with curiosity and later it was another way to have some world-melting orgasms while we pretended we were taking our relationship more slowly after we had sex practically the first time we met on the floor of the laundry room.’

No.

No. No. No.

Nooooo.

Yeah, and those flashes of reticence never really lasted beyond the orgasms in question anyway. Then they’d been back to sleeping together.

In a bed.

So, it’d been a while.

“But you do remember how to fish, don’t you?”

“Rod. Reel. Hook. Worm. Cast. Wait.”

“Sounds about right,” he said with a grin.

Something inside was just waiting for the other shoe to drop though. Why had he asked her to come with him? What was it he wanted to talk about? She’d been turning that over in her mind since he’d shown up in reception and asked for her, obviously wary of being a lone, slightly more elder male walking into a dorm block – even though there were boys on the floor. He wasn’t to know that though as he’d never visited her before.

So… what was it? Optimistically she thought that maybe he wanted to tell her that everything was cool and he – still – had no problem with her and Willow. But optimism had a flip side and then she started to wonder whether he was going to warn her off. Not to threaten, she didn’t think Ira had that in him, but maybe to suggest or tell her that she was holding Willow back… His wife had said something about Willow possibly being able to transfer at the end of this semester and year, pick a better school.

So far as she knew Willow had no such intention, but despite the fact he’d defended Willow from Sheila’s verbal prodding he was married to the woman. She might’ve worn him down. Sheila struck her as the sort of woman who could wear anyone down.

And if they couldn’t persuade Willow – which they couldn’t – then might they try to show her that it was the best thing for their daughter’s future and something, as the woman who loved her, she wouldn’t want to stand in the way of?

“You’re thinking too much,” he said a few minutes later. “No worries here. That’s why we’re here. To get away from them.”

No worries…

And yet, here she was. On her own, with Willow’s dad.

“C-can I ask you something?” she asked eventually.

“Sure you can.”

“Why – I mean, why did you invite me here?”

“Because I wanted to go fishing.”

“B-but with me?”

“You said you’d fished, that you hadn’t done it for years. So I thought you wanted to go fishing too.”

Tara bit her lip, he couldn’t see her unless he turned to look and he hadn’t done anything but look at the water the whole time. “Without Willow?”

“Willow doesn’t fish. Believe me I’ve tried to get her to.”

It was easy to laugh at his tone of voice, because she recognised the problem. Sitting, largely idle, for a prolonged length of time without even learning anything to make up for not doing anything? That wasn’t the Willow that either of them knew.

“You-you don’t want to talk about anything?” she asked, manning up to ask the hard question. Better to find out and get it out of the way, if that was what was at stake here.

“Like what?”

“Umm… I don’t know.”

“I don’t know either. So lets fish.”

He was being straight with her, there was nothing he wanted. Nothing he wanted to do or to say. Nothing he wanted to ask her or suggest to her. Nothing that was going to push Willow away from her because… if it was the best thing for Willow, she might’ve told her girl it was okay to go study somewhere else. That they could do it long distance or meet up again later… She’d have really done that if he’d convinced her it was the best thing for Willow.

But he wasn’t even going to try.

Hopefully because he didn’t believe it.

She could actually believe that he’d brought her out her solely to fish. On the back of an off hand comment she’d made on only the second occasion she’d met him, he’d decided to do this?

Something… nice.

Willow would tell her off for thinking about herself this way but she still wasn’t all that used to people being nice to her. Not that most people were mean, but because she’d not really had the confidence to join in with whatever was happening – or the permission sometimes – most people just didn’t really notice her. Those who had… well, Willow and her friends were redressing a balance that was still firmly on the side of not wanting to be her friend.

So for her – previously-thought-to-be-straight – girlfriend’s Dad to just do something like this for no other reason than he could? It wasn’t really hard to fathom why she was having a hard time believing in the simplest explanation.

And then, for the first time in her life, she caught a bite almost right away.

Seeing that she was a little less confident about how to actually land a fish than start the process of catching one, Ira came to her side and gave her some quiet encouragement as well as guidance when she asked for it. Otherwise he just let her get on with it.

Meanwhile she was a sheer adrenaline high because – hello – caught a fish.

By the time she reeled it in and could get a good look at it, she was practically ecstatic.

“Well done,” he said, stepping back and taking a photograph. “It’s a big one. Bout as big as I’ve ever caught here and here’s you on your first time too.”

Awkward smiles, getting her picture taken wasn’t one of her favourite things but this was the sort of thing you wanted to record.

“C-catch and release right?” she checked.

“Absolutely.”

The fish gave her a last flick with its tail before she released it back into the water. Sorry, Mister Fish.

“And now we start again,” he said, sitting contented beside her again.

“I…”

“Yes?”

“I want to th-thank you,” Tara said.

“Whatever for?”

“For being nice. You didn’t have to be. Lots of people wouldn’t be.”

“Tara?”

“Yes?”

“We already had this conversation.”

“That was about being nice then,” she explained. “This is about being nice now.” The first time they’d met he’d been surprised by her, by Willow. Okay, so he’d guessed what she was to his daughter before Sheila had, but still… surprises all around. Now he’d had plenty of time to think about it.

“I should’ve been an ogre?”

That might’ve been an unfortunate turn of phrase, given where they lived, but she shook her head anyway. “N-No,” she said. “But I’m glad your not.”

“Ah!” he said, and she thought he had a bite. No, he was still looking at her. “You thought I brought you up here to what? Give you bad news? Forbid you from seeing Willow? Bury you out in the wilderness?”

That last one hadn’t actually occurred to her.

Thankfully.

“Ah, that was a little joke. One that wasn’t actually very funny,” he said. “But you thought I was bringing you here for a reason?”

“I thought maybe you wanted to talk to me.”

“Well, I don’t want to talk to you.”

Hmm. The silence that hung over the pair of them was awkward. She knew what he meant and it hadn’t been said unkindly but the words were still unfortunate. That was reassuring, in a way, that he messed up what he wanted to say as well. She couldn’t be the only one.

“No. I do want to talk to you,” he said. “I mean, I’d love to talk to you. But not about anything in particular. There’s no reason for you being here except fish.”

“Okay.”

“Good.”

Silence, except for the sounds of the wind in the trees, insects and the soft lapping of the lake against the shore.

“So what shall we talk about?”

“I don’t know,” Tara replied, wracking her brain. The only things they had in common were:

a) Willow
b) A fear of his wife
c) Fishing

The first and second it didn’t feel right to talk about too much. The last… she hadn’t done this for years and didn’t think she could sustain a conversation beyond about two minutes. ‘Yes, it was a big fish.’

“Umm, lets see now. Willow tells me you’re a wiccan?”

“Umm, yes.”

“That… that’s good.”

“Really?” It was one of those things that should’ve been off limits. Ira Rosenberg, according to his daughter, was fervent in his faith.

“You sound surprised?”

“I-I am a little, I guess. Will - ”

“Willow told me how she snuck out every year to the Harris boy’s house to enjoy the Christmas TV shows?”

Almost exactly that, actually. “Sort of.”

“You think I didn’t know where she went? Every year?”

“Umm, no?”

“Well, I did. And if her faith was that easily shaken, I’d have put a stop to it. But a person should have faith in something. Whatever you want to call it, whatever you worship. Now, of course, I’d have preferred you to be a nice Jewish girl…” He left that hang for a while. “I’m joking of course. I don’t care what your faith is, Tara, so long as you have some.”

“What about Willow?”

“She still has faith,” he said. “One she’s made her mind up about for herself. Unless you seduced her into it with all your wiles?”

“I’m wile-less,” she said, fighting the urge to add ‘Sir.’

“I’m not sure my daughter would agree,” he said. “But so long as it wasn’t naked dancing around the fire in the worship of some carnal lusts that made her mind up for her – or some spell – then I’m comfortable with her choices. She’s old enough now to make up her own mind. About everything.”

The ‘everything’ had a significance that wasn’t lost on her. It still didn’t mean that he had to be nice about it though. He’d have preferred Willow to retain her faith, she was sure. Even though she hadn’t had anything to do with that choice, she was the girl who’d come along and taken away the straight line to grandchildren too. At least from their point of view.

“That’s – I like that outlook,” she said.

“Well done, Tara.”

“Well done?”

“That might be the first time I heard you express an opinion about another person. Yourself, you’re quite willing to do yourself down, but to talk about another person… I’ve not heard you do that before. Making a value judgement.”

He might be right. She hadn’t meant to and felt like apologising.

“I see the changes in her, you know?” he said a little while later.

“Changes?”

“You’re changing her.”

“You think?”

“Don’t worry about it, everyone changes as they meet new people. Get to know them. You can’t help it and neither can she. I’m sure she’s changing you too.”

“I guess.”

“You’re happy. But you don’t think you deserve it.”

What was he? A psychologist? She was self-aware enough to understand he wasn’t a million miles from the truth in his assessment. “She makes me happy.”

“And that’s good. But when things go wrong – and there are always rough patches – you have to remember and focus on the fact she makes you happy. Not on how you feel when she disappoints you or you fight. At the end of the day, happiness is the best you can ask for in life. If her love does that for you then you have to fight for it. You think living with my wife is easy?”

“N-no,” she said, very quietly.

“There you go, another judgement. But you’re right. It’s not easy. But she makes me happy and I know I do the same for her. That’s enough to sustain love, even when things are difficult.”

“I get it. I think.”

“This is your first relationship,” he said. It wasn’t a question.

“My first proper one, yes. How did you know?”

“Because you’re listening to me. Anyone who’d been through it would’ve thought they knew it all.” He laughed.

“I’d still listen to you,” Tara replied.

“Yes, Tara. You probably would.”

“I was saying you make her happy,” he said, bringing them back to his earlier point.

“Yes?”

“I think it’s because you’ve given her something she didn’t have before – besides the obvious. You’re… you’re her partner, Tara. And I don’t mean it in the gender/relationship neutral way they use it now. You’re her partner. You two just… fit together. From the outside, looking in, it doesn’t look like a boyfriend/girlfriend thing.”

She stayed silent.

“For obvious reasons, okay. But what I mean is that there doesn’t seem to be a sense of possession there. You don’t belong to each other. It’s more like you belong with each other. At least that’s how it seems from the outside. But I may be biased.”

And only two people had ever said anything to her than meant more than that.

“You’re s-supposed to be biased against me.”

“Says who?”

“All the laws of parenthood, I thought?” she suggested. Not the laws of nature because, really not wanting to get into that kind of discussion.

“Ah, I’ve read about this. Because you’re taking my little girl away from me?”

She nodded.

“But actually, on that basis, I should welcome it being you rather than some… boy. The theory goes that in his daughter’s suitor, the father see’s the younger version of himself. A threat to his position as head of the group. His son he wouldn’t see that way, because he carries on the same genes. But the son-in-law? Oh yes, I’m supposed feel the threat of his presence.”

“N-not with me?”

“Well, I suppose nature hasn’t programmed me for that. You might take over as the head of my family, I suppose, but I don’t react against you because of it. Besides, I think you’re quite nice.”

“I think you’re nice too.”

They fished in silence for a little while, until the sky clouded over and Ira took the opportunity to head into the trees. “It occurred to me, Tara.”

“Yes?”

“I have some curiosity.”

Oh no. Not again.

“Something I feel I should ask.”

No, please not the same sort of questions Buffy came back to Willow with. Not that…

“Yes?”

“I’d ask Willow but, to be honest with you I think she’d find it intrusive and I really have no need to know but simple curiosity, as I said.”

If he asks me what girls do in bed… I’m hiking out of here.

“You c-can ask me anything.” It was the first lie she’d told him. Except he really could ask, it was just the answering that she’d have trouble with.

“You and Willow,” he started.

Here it comes…

“What are your intentions? It sounds old fashioned, I know but I honestly can’t think of a better word for what I’m asking. There’s probably some sort of politically correct phrase for it or at least a better way of asking but I don’t know what it is. What?”

He’d cottoned on to her relief had he? “Nothing.”

“You thought I was going to ask you something else? What was it?”

“The question everyone asks,” she admitted after being stared down for all of three seconds.

“Oh. No. Noooo.”

“Yours is a better question,” she promised.

“Can you answer it though? Again, I’d ask Willow but… to be honest with you Tara, you seem to be more…”

“You’re not going to say ‘mannish’ are you?” Because she was pretty far from that. Crushed on a few girls who had been, but… not her personal choice.

“No. Though I suppose in days gone by that and what I mean were probably confused. You seem more mature than Willow. I suppose you are a year older. I think that you, more than her, understand what you have together and I’d have to call you a liar if you told me your mind hadn’t turned to the future. You’re a good girl, practical and careful. You have thought about it.”

He wasn’t wrong.

With a girl like Willow, when you were in her life like she was, how could you not look to the future. She’d read somewhere that you shouldn’t make plans beyond as far into the future as you’d already been together. Sounded like good advice, but pretty much it wasn’t the way people worked.

It wasn’t the way that she worked anyway.

When she was with Willow… Yeah, she thought about their futures. And not all of those thoughts were the romantic, happy ones. Sometimes she got a little down on herself, probably because of this being her first, real love and… well, there was that other thing. But she couldn’t see beyond the fact that they’d always be friends with a fondness for each other. No matter what else happened.

But she also had her dreams and she dreamed big.

A house, a dog – and a cat of course – a beautiful red haired woman to come home to. Maybe things would turn out that way. Maybe.

“I – I – I want to be with her. It’s tough to look too far ahead.”

“But you have.”

“This summer, Willow and I are going to spend it together. Here in Sunnydale. She… I didn’t want to be the one to tell you this.”

“Go on.”

“She won’t be coming home.” There, she’s said it. Not exactly a big secret, but Willow had put off telling her parents, or mostly her Mom, for long enough now.

“Any special reason for that?” he asked. “Apart from you?”

“I d-don’t think so.”

That was the second lie that she’d told him. She knew very well that Willow didn’t want to be faced with a summer of being lectured, badgered and persuaded about this, that or the other. Ira probably wouldn’t have been the culprit, at least not in Willow’s mind. In fact she’d been so caught up on her Mom that Ira had rarely rated a mention.

“Hmmph.”

He didn’t sound especially bothered by it, more… just… hmmph.

“And where are you two going to live?” Ira asked, turning to the practicalities. “You know we’d make you welcome, if you needed it.”

“I know, thank you. But… Willow and I are together and…”

“And she has a small bedroom, which is next to ours and doesn’t offer much privacy.”

She didn’t say anything, what with being beyond embarrassed. It hadn’t been a consideration up to now, but since he mentioned it... Tara didn’t think she’d have been able to bring herself to do much of anything in that position. Maybe not even if he and Sheila were out.

And what sort of summer would that make?

“I’m getting a job,” she said.

“Excellent!”

“It’s just a casual thing, they’ll ring if they need me and all…”

“Leaving you plenty of free time with Willow?”

Tara smiled. Yes, there was that. She’d been forced to get a job by finances really. Daddy hadn’t ever assumed she’d stay here at college during the summer. He expected her home and he expected her to be doing work for him. That meant there was precious little money set aside outside of tuition and living expenses for the semesters. Of course the logic of that, when he had a full course worth of funds saved up and she was only expected to be here until… Well, that was something she was putting right out of her mind.

That was her reason for being here. A summer, a wonderful summer. The kind of summer you could talk about the whole rest of your life. The kind of summer people made movies about.

And once they were back in their apartment, snuggling, the kind of summer she’d never let anyone make a movie about.

“I do understand, you know? I was young once. I had a girlfriend before Sheila and did something very similar.”

“Why are you whispering?”

“The hills have ears,” he said, breaking into laughter. “It’ll be good for you. College is a different thing to really living together. No matter how much time you spend together, sleeping over and making meals and the like, you’re not really living together until you’re sharing your space the whole time. It takes some getting used to.”

He hesitated, but saw that she wanted to hear him carry on. “Sharing your life, your space with someone else is all about learning compromise. When you have your own place to go back to you really don’t have to do that. Maybe when you decide where you’ll go for a meal or something, but not minute by minute. When you live together though… it’s the real test of what future you have. Every little thing needs either active agreement or tacit acceptance.”

She hadn’t thought about it like that, but could see what he meant. “So you think we’ll argue?”

“Probably not, I don’t think you have the kind of personality that would let it get that far. But you’ll find more differences between you than you noticed before. And that doesn’t have to be bad. I think you grow a lot.”

“You’re talking about that other girlfriend, aren’t you?”

“Absolutely. Without Rebekah I don’t think I’d have been in any state to marry Sheila.”

She smiled, wondering about the hills having those ears. Wasn’t that like a movie title or something too? “I love her.”

“What is it you kids say? ‘Well, duh!’ That’s so obvious, Tara. So obvious. I’m sure that the only person who doesn’t see it is Willow.”

“W-Willow?” What was he saying?

“Oh, calm down. She knows you love her, but she’s on the inside of the relationship. I don’t think she probably sees it as clearly as I do – as her mother does. You know what bothers Sheila? You’ll laugh at this.”

Maybe.

“What bothers her is that she doesn’t get a say in this. Willow has something in her life now that’s non-negotiable. My wife knows very well what would happen if she tried to get Willow to leave you or to move to Oxford or something. She’d risk losing Willow, because our daughter wouldn’t give you up.”

And she was suppose to laugh at that? “D-do you really think… Really?”

“See, you’re blind to it too. You’re on the inside looking out. From the outside looking in… Yes, that’s what I think. And Willow’s the one who doesn’t realise it. She’ll probably try to avoid her mother this summer, but there’s really no need for her to do that. The battle was lost before it even started. My wife doesn’t fight battles she can’t win, let me promise you that.”

“Well, good.”

He laughed, appreciating both the word and how she said it. “You’ll get used to Sheila.”

“She’s Willow’s mother, I want to do more than that.”

“It strikes me, Tara, that you can achieve pretty much what you want to.”

“No, n-not really.”

“Why would you say that?” he asked.

“That’s not me, I’m not really what you’d call a w-winner.”

“Faint heart never won fair lady. And you already won her.”

But there was the thing. The thing that she stayed away from and hid from everyone, including Willow. The thing that… Looking to the future was hard for her, because she knew exactly what it was supposed to hold. She could only hope she could find a way of having Willow in that future too.

She shook her head again.

“What is it?”

Some deep dark secret? Oh no, how could Tara Maclay have some deep, dark secret. She’s so nice and not at all dark.

Little did he know…

“N-nothing.”

“Fair enough, Tara. If you don’t want to say. But you should know that I believe it. There’s no reason I should think you’re the one for her, but I do. And if that’s the case, do you really think Willow’s going to let you be anything but that?”

“No.”

“There you go then. Whatever it is you’re worried about, believe me it’s easier when there’s two of you. That’s the other side of life as a couple. Yes, you might compromise a lot. You might find a pleasant middle ground through some things but when you’re up against something external to you, you don’t have to do that any more. Because you have her support. Her love. And her determination.”

And there it was, he was right. She was already feeling it. For weeks now she’d put what was going to happen next year – around her birthday - right out of her mind. Willow had filled the vacuum. Maybe he was right, maybe that didn’t need to happen at all. Because with Willow at her side, she’d be grounded. Under control. What happened to Mama didn’t have to happen to her.

“You’re right.”

“I know I’m right. It’s the wisdom of age. And it’s why the person who steals my daughter’s heart away is nowhere near ready to replace me.”

Tara laughed, in spite of where her mind had gone. Would he have been this nice to her if he’d known her secret?

Nice, perhaps. Accepting of her place with Willow… No. Which was why she couldn’t tell him, even though he’d have probably tried to help her. She couldn’t bear for him to know – while Willow didn’t – and for that acceptance to go away. That was something she couldn’t take… So she’d keep being ‘nice Tara’. ‘Good Tara’. She’d keep being who she was and looking for the help to get through what was coming. Because he was right. She was stronger with Willow than without her.

With Willow, there was hope. Without her there was only resigned acceptance.

“I feel bad now,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because we got so serious. So let me turn it around. There’s something you didn’t say,” he pointed out. “When I asked you about your intentions.”

Tara tried to think about what she’d said, admittedly it was only about the summer but talking about more than that – even if she’d thought about it – was… No, she was putting the bad thoughts behind her. Looking to a brighter possibility. “What’s that?”

“Fun. You didn’t say you were going to have fun.”

“I… I never liked that.”

“You don’t like fun?”

“No, I mean – yes, I like fun but I don’t – calling it fun? It makes it seem less than it is. Some people would think it was just a fling. College experimentation. Something else.” There was her problem with the word. More for Willow than for her. She could just hear Sheila saying ‘You’ve had your fun, dear. Now you need to switch schools and find a nice boy.’

Maybe it was unfair, but she could hear in her mind it all the same.

“Not that kind of fun.”

“Okay.”

“The kind where you go out, take advantage of the fact you’re young and free to do what you like instead of just taking advantage of my daughter. Joke!”

She was forced to smile, just the way he said it was enough to lift her.

“I’ll bear that in mind.”

“See that you do, Missy. You two can’t stay in the bedroom all the time – tempting as I remember that can be.”

“Mister Rosenberg!”

“We talked about this.”

“Ira, you can’t say things like that.”

“What if I’ve been waiting my whole adult life to be able to say things like that?” he asked, after he casted again.

“You have?”

“Not exactly that but… close enough. I didn’t really get to know your… predecessor. He was a musician you know?” He said the word like some people she’d met said ‘lesbian.’

“Y-Yes, I know.”

“Do you have any idea how disappointed I would’ve been if my Willow had stayed with a musician? The point is though, that you two have to get out and enjoy everything else. Friends. The beach. Ice-cream – and I know you can do that one in bed but… humour me.”

It might well be that he did have a point, but before she could agree he stunned her into silence. “Not that you shouldn’t get what you can before that lesbian bed-death thing I’ve read about sets in.”

“Mister – Ira, that’s not going to happen.”

“Tara, my dear, I really don’t know why they call it ‘lesbian bed death’ though, it comes to all of us. Trust me.”

“N-not to us.” It seemed important to make that point.

“I hope you’re right. But anyway, enjoy the summer. There aren’t many of them until you have to worry about work, kids and how much the AC is costing to run.”

“We’re talking about you now, aren’t we?”

“Indubitably.” He took a deep breath. “Don’t get me wrong. It’s still worth it. It’s all still worth it and not just for what’s in the past. But you don’t want to be my age and looking back at what should’ve been because you’ll never have as good a chance to do it again. Which is why…” He pushed an envelope at her.

“What’s this?”

“Open it and find out.”

Looking at the envelope she had a horrible idea that he’d done something far too big, something she couldn’t pay him back for. They looked like… Just the right size for…

Airline tickets.

Two of them.

“San Francisco?”

“That’s right.”

“One way?”

“That’s right. Care hire’s taken care of, you can drive back. One week up there, one week to come back. You said that job was casual right? So you can start a little late.”

“I-I guess.” Actually she had no idea.

“Then you should go to San Francisco. And not because it’s the gayest city in the Union, but it’s just a great town and the drive back is… amazing.”

“Why didn’t you give this to Willow?” Tara asked. “Why get me alone?”

“Willow doesn’t like fishing.”

“Oh. Well, thank you so much. It’s such a sweet… I don’t know how I’m going to tell her.”

“One word after another,” Ira said. “One word after another. But while we’re talking. I wonder if perhaps you want to know what twenty years of marriage has taught me?”

How could she say ‘no’, after what he’d done for her and Willow already?
“Please.”

“Never stop working at it, Tara. Not now. Not in twenty years. Not ever. If you stop working at it, you’ve stopped valuing it. Things will change and you’ve got to change with them.”

“You really want us to be together, forever?”

“For as long as I’m fit enough to go fishing at least.”

She giggled. The selfish reason came to the fore. “Okay. I’ll d-do my very best to stay with her as long as you want to come up here.”

And she intended to. People did change. Willow would change. She’d change. They’d change in response to each other…

They’d come through it.

Now, perhaps, there was a different option in her future. A shiny, bright and good option. “I kind of want to hug you,” Tara said. “But…”

“After I catch a fish,” he replied.

“Okay.”

-----------------

“Tara?” Willow asked, realising the stupidity of the question being as she had the only other - illegal - key to Tara’s room. “Where’ve you been?”

“Yes, it’s me.”

Obviously enough, since she was stood there.

“And where’ve you been?” Willow was trying not to sound any of possessive, obsessive or negative. But curiosity was her thing. If there was something to be curious about then, generally, she was. Up to and including the whereabouts of a woman she’d given her heart to.

And damn it, she wanted to know where that heart had been taken.

“Didn’t you see the note?”

There was… something different about Tara. But she didn’t have time to worry about that now. Things to find out, more immediate things like “What does ‘Gone fishing’ mean?”

“I thought it was pretty explanatory,” Tara said, bending to kiss her.

“You smell like the great outdoors,” Willow said. “Have you been out to those surf chicks? No, that’d smell like the ocean. You’ve been… outside all day.”

“Yes, Sherlock Rosenberg,” Tara replied. “I went fishing.”

“Sherlock Rosenberg? Seriously?” For Tara that was verging on spicy talk. That was right up… After all, Tara Maclay didn’t do sarcasm. Well, she did. But it was so subtle and masked that no one could ever take offence. Not that offence was what she was doing now. More… fascination.

“Sorry,” Tara said.

“No, don’t apologise. I kinda like the new you. I just wonder where she came from, that’s all. You really went fishing?”

“Yes.”

“You like to fish?”

“Umm, yeah.”

“And you do that a lot?” Willow asked. Had she missed something? Starting with the absent time and ending with whatever – presumably fish-type fare – a fisherwoman was supposed to bring back with her. Had she missed all that? They’d had fish like… one time. And that had been eating out. Not in the spicy way, either.

“Not for a while, not until your Dad asked me.”

“My Dad? You do mean, Ira Rosenberg right?”

“Yeah.”

“But he doesn’t eat fish!” As in ‘aha, are you sure it wasn’t a doppelganger or something – one that liked fish – because there was a lot of that sort of thing going around. We know about that swim team, they probably like fish – but didn’t look much like my Dad…’

“No, he throws most of them back.”

“Oh.”

“I think he just likes fishing. It’s peaceful. He likes peaceful.”

“And… he came here, and asked you to go fishing with him?” Willow wasn’t getting over that part any time soon.

“Yeah.”

“Was he looking for me?” she wondered.

“No, baby.”

“Why not?”

“Because you hate it? Because you can’t sit still for long enough and it does nothing for your curiosity,” Tara answered, counting them off on her fingers.

“Alright, stop now. Fine. I’d hate it. But my Dad asked you?”

“Uhuh. And I have news.”

Willow shook her head and patted the bed beside her, inviting Tara to come and sit down. At least for now. “Okay, but first Tara, I have to ask you something very important.”

Tara sat, clutching an envelope. Was that the basis of her news?

“Okay?”

“Tara,” Willow said, forcing herself to be as serious as she could. “I have to ask… Are you having an affair with my father?”

The first things it earned her was a smack on the arm. “Willow!”

“Well… look, you and he… you get on. Ira Rosenberg has hated everyone I’ve taken home. Everyone. And okay, that was a grand total of two people before you and one of them wasn’t exactly ‘official’ but it’s still a one hundred percent record.”

“We talked about that,” Tara said. “I don’t threaten his place at the head of the pack.”

“And have you been reading Call of the Wild?”

“No, look Willow, I have some news - ”

“It’s because,” she said, interrupting Tara. How much news could there be from a fishing trip? “It’s because you’re not a musician. Or… Xander. Both of those were pretty much no-nos in his eyes.”

“Willow we’re going to San Francisco and driving back down the coast,” Tara blurted it all out, almost as a single word.

“Wha?”

“We’re going to San Francisco and driving back down the coast.” When she repeated it, it was a lot more confident and matter of fact.

“I’ve always wanted to go to San Francisco or at least I have for the past few months since – well, you know - ” There’d always been an appeal to the city, landmarks, artwork. Hills that cars bottomed out on in a shower of sparks. But somewhere that actually had it’s own big old gay street? So much more than a coffee shop?

“I know,” Tara said.

“So why are you going with my Dad?” Not having an affair with Dad? Could’ve fooled me.

“I’m not going with your Dad,” Tara said. “I’m going with you. We’re going. The two of us.”

“Ohhh, the two of us?”

“The two of us.”

“That’s okay then. In fact that’s… that’s freaking great.”

“So do I get a kiss?” Tara asked.

“You’re sure you haven’t been kissing my Dad?”

“Only on the cheek.”

“Okay then.”

“There was a hug.”

“A big fatherly hug or… like we hug?” Willow asked.

“Kind of fatherly,” Tara said, wavering a little.

“That’s good. Do you know, I don’t know the last time my Dad hugged me,” she revealed.

True story.

“Three weeks ago, when we were over there?” Tara suggested.

“No, that was you.” She remembered quite distinctly, Tara hugging her Dad. After all their secret conspiring in the kitchen while she’d been fighting with Mom.

“I’m p-pretty sure it was you too.”

“No.”

“I was so sure…”

Willow held back a grin. Truth was, she didn’t begrudge Tara a hug at all. Knowing a little of what she’d come from, losing her Mom and how that had affected her Dad, no… she didn’t begrudge that. And more to the point, Ira Rosenberg wasn’t the type of Dad who hugged.

Except Tara, apparently.

“There is something going on between you though, isn’t there?” she teased as she leaned back and examined the plane tickets up there and the hotel reservations. She could see research on the horizon. Glorious research.

“No.”

“Okay, I know you’re not having an affair. That was just me teasing. But… my father’s cheating on me. Isn’t he?”

“No, Willow. He’d never do that. I’d never take part in that.”

“You’re fishing with him, hugging him. He’s buying you plane tickets.” It was all she could do to hold it inside, all the laughter. Tara wasn’t buying her anger, of course, but it was fun to spar.

“He’s buying us plane tickets,” Tara said, playing along. “Look, there’s your name too.”

“But yours is first.” There wasn’t much Tara could say to that. On every piece of documentation that contained both their names, it was ‘Ms Tara Maclay and Ms Willow Rosenberg’.

“It’s okay, baby,” Tara embraced her, which was just about all Willow had wanted anyway. “He doesn’t love me more than you.”

“Did he tell you that?”

“No.”

“He didn’t tell me either!” Willow faked bursting into floods of tears and used the hug to nuzzle her face into those boobs she loved so much.

“Happy now?” Tara asked.

“Mmmphf.”

“That’s what I thought.”

She was in a happy place at the moment. Physically and emotionally. It was all coming together – and she didn’t just mean she and Tara. The latest big bad was bad no longer. They’d already been looking forward to the summer together – casual job aside – but they were going on a trip too?

Oh, and Tara-boobs. Yeah, this was some kind of bliss.

“I… I can get him to hug you,” Tara said, teasing her hair.

Willow lifted her face from nuzzle-city, population me. “Would you?”

“For sure, I love you – I can get you a hug.”

“Guess I’ll have to make do with you in the meantime.”

“Guess so.”

Dibs!

Aww, that was just so sweet and delightful and charming. Much of what Ira said about long-term relationships is what my future father-in-law told my fiancé when we got engaged.

I really loved how he'd known all along about Willow going to Xander's to watch Christmas shows; it's the sort of thing kids think they get away with, and parents let them think they got away with.

I really loved what Ira said about waiting his adult life to tease someone about her relationship with his daughter. I don't want kids, but if I did, I'd look forward to that day. Instead, I torment my future brother-in-law.

Love, love, love!!

I've never, ever seen a piece where there was so much Ira/Tara interaction, or even alone-Ira/Tara interaction. It was wonderful. I loved how he spoke to Tara about seeing their relationship from the 'outside'.

That really was a joy to read :)

And anything that ends with Tara-boobs is a plus in my book!

:peace

PS Hope the porn business is treating you well :wink

Yay for great update-y goodness... I'm glad that Tara and Ira got along so good... I guess Willow must have been pretty pissed when she found the "Gone Fishing" note...

Katharyn,

My how I love your writing. That was simply wonderful. I loved how Ira reached out to Tara. Fishing seams like a reflective activity which suits Tara's personality well. The banter between the two was lol funny :laugh ...Tara.. sweet Tara is far from wile-less and Willow is a big ole tity whore!
