Hey there,

I found this yesterday and it's lovely. You have painted a very deep, textured picture of the two women and their lives and obsessions. The discomfort is palatable and just so fun to observe. I thought "they may dance at the bar" but on the other hand, this could go on for a long time.

Well done,

Go Tara! But I can easily see Willow rationalising it away as Tara just being helpful, and Tara figuring Willow was just grateful for the save... tell ya what, there's gonna be a *lot* of pent-up longing being released when these two finally stop circling each other at a distance.

Tara's musing about Willow being dropped in her lap was cute. Willow in a bow :)

I like the art theme running through this too, continued here with Willow still beating herself up over messing up talking about Tara's painting. And no, I don't like it *just* because I'm thinking naughty thoughts about body paint :)

Great work.

I'm so glad you decided to have your second post be this story because it's great. I love the angst. You describe situations so well that I can feel what the characters are feeling, which is fun. It lets me relive a little of the angst my fiancee and I had before we got together. I can't wait for the next section.

Holy smokes. People are actually reading this thing. And replying. Holy smokes. Thanks very much to everyone who has read this sucker - first time I've ever posted anything I've written anywhere. Little overwhelmed by your words (in the very bestest way possible). Thank you, thank you, thank you.

willowhanded Thanks, and yeah, no pushy brunettes in the bathroom allowed! (There should be a sign...) :)

tarawhipped Thank you very much. There are so many beautiful stories on this board where Willow and Tara get to experience all of the wonderful, painful parts of falling in love and wanting someone that the show didn't describe. The very very best part of Pens, in my opinion.

AntigoneUnbound Thanks, esp about the setting scenes up. I figure, if I can see it in my head I might as well try and write it down. You're lucky with your stories though; we all know what Buffy's house looks like, etc. so you get to spend more time on the witty lines and fantastic plots (which are truly spectacular, both). Thanks also re: the bathroom (boy, don't get to say that phrase much). I think Tara's trying desperately to be that person who thinks "so so-and-so doesn't like me, no big deal" while it secretly eats her up inside. So, trying to inject perspective at every chance is a way to try and keep the blues at bay. We'll see how well that works out for her haha. Thanks again for reading (and you can presumptuously abbreviate me anytime!).

lilMissFortuneCookie "EasierSaid, hereafter known as ES (thanks to AntigoneUnbound) hereby absolves herself of any and all consequences lilMissFortuneCookie may encounter at work due to shirking work to read this story." :) Thanks very much for reading.

tinnakaren I know, I know - if it's any consolation this is the first time I've tried my hand at W/T fic, so, really if anything I'm just lame for not registering and commenting on the many many fantastic, inspiring pieces on this board before now. Still trying to get up the nerve to post in other threads. Kinda like double-dutch. "Wait, wait, okay go now!" And thanks for the pretty flower, I think I'll stick around for a while. ;)

VixenyTarasHot Thanks very much. The hurt hurts (obviously) but at least it's tempered by those brief moments of heart shattering happiness. Hopefully I'll be able to post as fast as I can think of stories to tell!

WickedReds A few updates, yup (*nervous chuckle*). I'm thinking more of a marathon of blindness (which might get tricky, come to think of it...) Hopefully it'll pay off in the end.

DreamsToDream They so totally SHOULD play girlfriend every day and every night! Thanks for reading.

YMKA Seriously, what is wrong with these two, don't they see how perfect they are for each other? ;) Thanks for reading.

snuggle79 I do accept late entries (especially considering what a late entry I myself have been to this awesome community). Thanks very much for your words.

JustSkipIt Lordy another legend. I can't tell you how many times I've read your stories, so wonderful, warm and inspiring, truly. Brilliant stuff! :) And yes, this is probably going to go on for a while. I love the little moments people share when they're trying to figure each other out - I'd be remiss not to try and record as many as possible (which I think, could get a little frustrating!). Hopefully, as I said previously, it'll be worth it in the end.

Irishgrl3 Tara to the rescue... okay now I'm having superhero/spandex thoughts (not that that's a bad thing). Thanks for reading!

Wired vixen Wow. I don't know about best ever (course, I don't know what you've been reading ;) ) But thanks for the compliments. I'm blushing big time.

alysagoddess85 I love Buffy! She's blunt, perceptive, oblivious and caring all at the same time. She makes a great foil, and definitely is going to be around a lot. Thanks for reading.

Artemis Body paint, huh... ;) Yes, lots of rationalizing going on. Both women I think are a little afraid of how badly they want the other, it makes them overly anxious about their interactions. They *really* gotta get over that. :) And yes, the continuation of the art theme - a touchstone, for sure.

Idgie Oooh, real-life angst, not as much fun as fic angst. And thanks, I'm so glad I decided to post. The response has been much more than I could ever dream it to be. Thanks for reading.

Alright, next up... update.

Rating: Overall NC-17, but for this part I think PG-13 works.

Part Six

It was a good forty minutes before Tara was able to catch sight of Willow after the bathroom encounter. The blonde had been hijacked by a woman who ran one of the art guilds Tara was a passive member in as she swung the stall door open, and that had evolved into a long walk around the bar meeting and greeting with various women who also knew her from the art scene. She emerged from the backside of the bar relatively unscathed to see Willow sitting on the couch alone. Well not alone, there was that woman crouching down and chatting with her. Flirting with her. Tara felt her jealousy flare again and she started to head toward the couch, to save Willow from this unwanted advance, when she stopped short. The woman who was speaking to Willow stood, her eyebrows raised in what could only be described as the universal sign of 'you're sure?' Willow smiled politely, nodded, and the woman walked away.

Tara watched as Willow smiled to herself slightly before quickly glancing around the room and dug into her pocket for her phone. Tara smiled slightly and felt her chest swell with pride. Here she thought she had to save Willow, when Willow was perfectly capable of stomping on those poor women's dreams all on her own. That's my girl. Tara thought before sighing, shaking her head at the slip. Well, she *was* my girl for two, whole, glorious minutes in the bathroom. Her brow furrowed deeply and she stood confused. Wait, that sounds kinda naughty... Her eyes glazed over at a new image filling her mind of her pinning the panting redhead against the bathroom wall.

Tara was pulled from her thoughts when Buffy tapped her on the shoulder. She turned, blushing, to see the petite blonde standing behind her, holding two sweating bottles of water in her hands. "Did you see Willow shoot down that chick?" Tara nodded in the affirmative and Buffy smiled proudly. "That's like the fourth one that's tried her luck since Will got back from the bathroom. That little vixen is a 'no go' pro. Hey!" Buffy exclaimed, as if just struck with a thought. "Maybe she learned it from watching you!"

Tara frowned slightly at Buffy's good-natured dig. "You just left her over there to be accosted?"

"I had my own accosting to do." Buffy replied, nodding at the bartender. "Straight."

Tara laughed a little beside herself and shook her head, before her eyes went wide. "Oh! You will never believe what happened in the bathroom." Tara said.

"You'd be surprised," Buffy replied evenly. "I have a pretty open mind."

"Remember that brunette that would *not* take no for an answer from you at the Landslide a couple of months ago?" Tara related.

Buffy groaned and rolled her eyes. "You mean, Ms., Hands-In-New-Places?"

Tara nodded. "She had Willow pressed up against the paper towel dispenser."

Buffy's draw dropped. "What! That woman is shameless! Well I mean I don't know, she might have some shame tucked away *somewhere*, but on the whole, I think she's pretty shameless! Poor Will, what happened?"

"I pulled a butch and did the 'she's with me' thing." Tara said sheepishly.

"Really?" Buffy smiled wide. "What did gropes-alot do?"

"Just apologized and left."

"Wow, you got an apology even. How about Willow?"

Tara thought back to the redhead's stunned face, how she had wiped her hand on her pants the second her hand was free. Tara put on a false smile and just shrugged. "Just said thanks. I think I got there before any groping could occur."

"Well I'm sure Willow is eternally grateful. As am I, thanks for looking after her." Buffy said sincerely.

"Of course." Tara replied, equally sincere. Like I need thanks for doing something that feels so natural, so right.

"Wanna go sit?" Tara nodded and waited for Buffy to lead the way. They made it halfway to Willow when a slim woman with big, curly, Carole King hair touched Tara's arm. "Tara." Tara turned and smiled.

"Hey!" She leaned over and gave the woman a warm hug. She righted herself and caught Buffy turning, a questioningly look on her face. "Buffy, you remember Marissa, she's hosting the gallery show next week."

"Oh right, hi." Buffy shifted the water in her arms and extended a hand, shaking the slight woman's thin hand.

"Marissa, you remember my friend Buffy."

"Of course, you work for SF Magazine." Marissa replied smiling.

"I do." Buffy replied, smiling

Marissa turned to Tara, taking her hands. "Do you have a minute to go over some gallery stuff? I promise I'll make it seem less work like by buying you a drink."

"Of course." Tara replied, squeezing the woman's hands and nodding. "Buffy-"

"Right, you know where we are." Buffy smiled and looked at Marissa. "It was nice to see you again."

"Same." Tara and Marissa headed back to the bar while Buffy continued forward. She approached the couch to see Willow quickly look down to her phone.

Willow was reasonably certain Buffy hadn't caught her staring at Tara as they moved toward her. She quickly sorted through the phone's menu, fighting not to awkwardly demand who that woman was Tara had just disappeared with. She looked up only when Buffy put a bottle of water in front of her. "Thanks."

"No problem."

Willow rested the phone on her leg and reached for the bottle. She tried to sound nonchalant when she asked, "so who was the woman with Tara?" She flashed a quick sideways look at Buffy as she twisted the bottle cap.

"Marissa. She owns the gallery Tara's showing at next week."

"Oh." Willow replied before taking a quick sip of water. "They're friends? I mean, just friends?" She looked down at her lap, and dug her thumb into the paper label on the bottle.

"Yes. I think Marissa has a partner and Tara - well, she's a nun. A gay nun, but a nun nevertheless."

Willow chuckled softly. Yay! Her mind screamed.

"Hey, I heard about your adventure in the bathroom." Buffy said, settling into the couch.

"You did?" Willow asked nervously.

"Same girl tried to get me a few months ago. Was *not* familiar with the dictionary definition of 'no'."

"Oh. Well she wasn't that bad, just a little... bold."

Buffy smiled, opening her bottle of water and taking a drink. "So diplomatic." She scanned the crowd and looked back to Willow. "Saw you shoot down a couple of ladies."

"Oh, yeah." Willow blushed. "They were really nice."

"Yeah?" Buffy asked.

"Yeah, just saw me sitting here alone and came over to chat. One asked to dance. Kinda sweet, brave. I know I'd never have the guts to approach some stranger I thought was attractive." Willow internally grumbled, or you know, a roommate...

"Sorry I left you here all alone."

"You had to get water." Willow said fiddling with her bottle. "And the bartender's phone number." She tacked on mischeivously.

"I'm so transparent." Buffy said taking another sip, chuckling. Willow giggled and the girls sat quiet for a moment enjoying the music and each other's company. Willow's phone beeped and she looked down at the screen, smiling.

"Phone call?" Buffy asked.

"Text message." Willow said shaking her head. "Bryan."

"Ah, and how is Bry-Bry?"

"Good good." Willow replied, smiling goofily and shimmying in her seat. She noticed Tara approaching out of the corner of her eye, a drink in hand. She looked away, but felt her eyes being pulled back by the blonde's swaying form.

"Still living in New York?" Buffy asked, not noticing Willow looking past her.

God she's beautiful. Willow thought, watching Tara effortlessly maneuver through the crowd. "Uh huh." Willow answered Buffy absently.

"Anything new with him?"

Willow looked down at the table as Tara made her way into the area. Tara and Buffy shared a warm smile and Tara sat down in a chair next to the couch.

"New boyfriend." Willow responded, keeping her eyes away from Tara. Tara placed her drink on the table and joined the conversation.

"New boyfriend?"

"Bryan." Buffy said, nodding at Willow.

The air rushed from Tara's chest. Willow has a new boyfriend? When- When did this happen? She struggled not to let the panic and disappointment show on her face. She looked over at Willow, who was idly toying with the phone, her eyes downward cast. Is that why she's been upset tonight? Did he do something to her? What kind of jerk would-

"You have a boyfriend named Bryan?" She stammered out. Buffy burst into laughter and Willow looked up confused. She replayed Tara's question and shook her head. "No, my friend Bryan has a new boyfriend. Adam."

"Oh." Tara said, feeling foolish as Buffy kept laughing.

"I'm sorry," Buffy said trying to speak through the laughter. "Just, the thought of Willow and Bryan together is too funny."

Tara looked down at her drink embarrassed at the faux pas and Willow frowned at Buffy. She looked over at Tara, the blonde picking absently at her skirt. Stupid Buffy. The phone rang and Willow looked away from her roommate and answered. "Hello? Hey, ears burning?" She frowned at Buffy, who just laughed harder. "What? Bryan I can barely hear you, hold on." Willow stood. "I'm gonna take his outside." Buffy nodded and wound down her laughs with a contented sigh. Willow squeezed between Buffy and Tara on her way out. Tara bit her lip and tried not too look, as Willow's exposed waist passed close to her face. Don't even think about inhaling right now Tara. As soon as the redhead passed, she reached down and picked up her drink.

"Willow and Bryan..." Buffy said to herself, shaking her head. Tara took a hearty swig of her drink, and looked to the side just in time to see a woman approaching.

The woman stopped inches from Tara, a large, predatory smile on her face. Tara's mouth was still full of vodka and cranberry juice, and she looked up at the woman with her cheeks full, eyes wide. "Hey gorgeous, wanna dance?" The new woman asked.

Tara swallowed with an audible gulp and Buffy burst into laughter again. The woman looked at Buffy like she was addled and then back to Tara. Tara blushed apologetically. "Um..."

An hour later, Willow was back on the couch, alone. Several empty drinks sat on the table before her, and she absently wished she had something to sip, so she wouldn't look so awkwardly alone and out of place. She tapped the phone on her leg and thought about firing up a game. At least she wouldn't look so pathetic. She glanced over to the bar and saw Buffy laughing at something the bartender had just said. She smiled slightly.

"Hope you like martinis." Willow looked up to see Tara standing before her, holding a martini out toward her in her left hand. Willow blinked. "I mean, technically it's just the one martini that I'm hoping you like." Willow didn't speak, yet took the drink from the smiling blonde's hand. "For the cab ride." Tara explained.

Willow smiled slightly. "Thanks, you really didn't need to-"

"I know." Tara said, a half smile gracing her features.

I love that smile. Willow thought, melting.

"It's gin, I hope that's okay."

"It is." Willow said, taking a sip. "Thank you."

"I didn't know if you liked olives..." Tara trailed off almost apologetically.

"I actually do." Willow admitted apprehensively, her nose crinkling.

"Good." Tara smiled widely, bringing her right hand forward. Held in her fingers was a fancy pink toothpick and two olives. Willow felt the smile explode across her face as she looked from the olives to Tara's face. "I'm not really sure what I would have done with them if you had said you didn't." Willow chuckled slightly and took the offered gift. Their fingers brushed and both girls blushed. "Mind if I sit?" Tara asked, indicating the empty spot on the couch.

"No, please." Willow said. Please, please, please! Tara sat a good foot and a half from Willow, carefully arranging her skirt, glancing around the club as she settled into the soft seat. Willow looked at the gap between them and sighed inwardly. She put the olives in the glass and then rested the drink on the table. Tara looked over in time to see the action.

Probably should have asked Buffy what Willow's favorite drink was instead of just showing up with a martini... Doesn't look like she likes it.

Willow turned and their eyes caught. They smiled nervously. "Having fun?" She asked, bringing her fingers together in her lap, slightly fidgeting.

"Yeah, more or less." Tara said, smiling. Willow felt herself melting again. And staring. Oh, staring not good. She turned suddenly and picked up the drink.

Tara's smile faltered and she looked away from the redhead. She looked back as Willow swallowed. Okay, so maybe she does like the drink. Or, she just needs to be drunk to find conversation with me interesting. Maybe I should think about serving wine at our dinners... Tara lost her train of thought as she found herself staring at Willow's neck. She only just brought her eyes up in time to meet Willow's returning gaze, as she placed the drink back on the table. "How about you?" Tara stammered out. "Fun?"

"Yeah." Willow replied, nodding slightly. "More or less." She smiled mischievously and Tara smiled back, hearing her own words echoed. They sat for a moment silently, not looking directly at each other but hyper aware of the other's presence.

"So how do you know Bryan? From work?"

Willow shook her head, leaning back into the couch as the music switched from something relaxed to something louder with a driving beat. "From school."

Tara frowned and leaned toward Willow. "What?"

Willow leaned toward Tara and repeated. "School."

Tara shook her head and leaned back. She stood a little and moved closer to Willow. Willow sucked in her breath, then sighed as Tara sat back down. She was sitting close enough for the redhead to feel her warmth, and she swore she could smell her shampoo. "Sorry, the music changed and I couldn't hear." Tara explained, blushing at their close proximity.

"S'okay." Willow choked out, picking up her drink. She took a deep gulp, finishing the martini and settled back into the couch, facing forward. Tara looked over at her roommate and then moved her eyes forward.

Okay, so sitting close, bad idea. "H-He w-went to M.I.T.?" She asked.

"Yeah." Willow said, noticing Tara's stutter. The blonde didn't do it much, only, it seemed, when she was uncomfortable or surprised. Bryan going to M.I.T. wasn't all that surprising, hello, went to school with me, so the blonde must be uncomfortable. "He lives in New York." She tacked on, her shoulders sagging a bit at the thought of making the blonde uncomfortable.

"Calling kinda late for him."

"He's Mr. Outgoing. And kinda needy. Not really a big surprise to be hearing from him at all hours. Was slightly more annoying for him to call me after midnight when we were in the same time zone." She smiled at the thought of her friend.

"Midnight phone calls, good friend." Tara said.

"He is. He's... my Tara." Willow said simply, smiling to herself. She looked up and caught Tara perplexed look, so she elaborated. "Like if I was Buffy...? Because you're Buffy's Tara. I mean, you are Tara, and it's not like Buffy posseses you or whatever, you're Tara-on-your-own, independent of Buffy, but, you're her best friend from college and Bryan's my best friend from college so... he's kinda, my Tara."

My Tara. Tara gulped and nodded, not daring to speak right away. She almost begged ignorance so Willow would explain some more. So she would say it again. My Tara. "He's a really lucky guy then." She finally said, softly. Willow's face twisted in confusion and Tara elaborated. "Cause, if he's me, and I'm lucky to have Buffy..." she trailed off, nodding her head hopping Willow would follow. "He's a really lucky guy." She again stated sincerely.

Willow thought about it for a split second before a warm, glowing smile broke across her face. Tara's breath caught at the sight of it. They looked into each other's eyes, both of their chests filling with warmth. "Thanks." Willow said softly.

"Okay, who's ready to take off?" Buffy stood to the side, a weary look on her face. Both Willow and Tara turned to her and nodded, silently standing up, not acknowledging the moment they had both shared. Willow leaned forward, picked up the olives on the toothpick and popped them in her mouth. Tara smiled, seeing the action out of the corner of her eye. The group turned, and filed toward the door.

The cab ride was less quiet than the first, both girls exchanging their impressions of the club's ambiance as they snaked back emptying streets to Tara's place. Willow again paid the tab, and they climbed the stairs and entered the apartment quietly. Tara tossed her keys on the small table near the door and looked over at the microwave clock: 12:24. Both girls moved to the stairs to their rooms without preamble. They emerged into the hallway at the top of the stairs and split off from each other, each heading to their own rooms on opposite ends of the long hallway.

"Goodnight, Willow."

"Night Tara."

The entered their own rooms, and closed the doors.

Oh yay! you're staying! ;)

I can't say how happy I was when I saw your update. See, I just read the story yesterday, and I've been praising it to everyone I've talked to today, telling them that you are one writer that knows how to use words in the right way. That is, you use the right words, at the right time to convey the right emotion in the right way ... everything's just right with this story. And this update only solidifies my opinion of it - it's amazing :)

I can't begin to express how much I adore this story! The shy glances, Tara gettin' her jealous on, Buffy too wrapped up in flirting with cute bartenders to notice the weirdness. The dialogue and the desription are equally fantastic.

It would be much more frustrating at this point if the story wasn't so damn good, but since it is, I'll just trust that you'll make them get a clue at some point.

Soon? Please?:pray

I'm still enjoying the understated way you're revealing this Willow and Tara and their relationship or lack thereof. I'm also glad that there are moments when the two of them are beginning to realize that their reticence may be hurting the other (Willow's self-flagellation regarding the 'just paint' blunder).

And as much as I want these two to come together I have to admit I am SO glad it didn't happen in the gay bar. when you revealed they were going there, I was just a bit worried that we were heading into 'drunken sex in the bathroom' scenario. not that that would be a bad thing...eventually. just that the pace of this is so lovely and I can't help hoping for more for the both of them. and you handled it wonderfully, maintaining the tension, but allowing the two of them to take a few more baby steps toward each other.

I do find myself wishing one of them will break down and confide in their mutual best friend. ;)

hey Heather,

I've finally found some much needed time to sit down and catch up on some of the new fics around here and I must say I'm exceptionally glad I decided to sit down and read this one!

I'm all for slow build ups in the relationship between Willow and Tara and can i say that the build up in this fic is torturous!! I'm definitely a sucker for torture in this scenario, especially when it's as beautifully written as this. I love the pace and timing of your writing, it's perfect...not too much waffle but not too sparse either. You write dialouge and description equally well, keeping it natural.

I'm eagerly awaiting the continuation of this story if only to have my heart strings tugged to breaing point along with Willow and Tara's. Poor Tara, thinking that the woman she's in love with doesn't even enjoy her company...while all along Willow has feelings for her. I wonder why Willow is reluctant to fes up to this?

At any rate, it's definitely worth the wait to stick with a well written story as the eventual relationship will be made all the better for the build up. So that pretty much means you can torture this poor little kitten all you want, because I'll keep on reading.

Happy writing

Well, they're making progress... slowly... and taking a step-and-a-half back for every two steps forward, but hey, we'll just have to have faith that they'll get there in the end. Nice timing on the club's music getting loud - it's good to know that fate isn't set against them :) Willing to lend a hand, even - probably just as well. But that conversation was heartening, they seemed to be willing to take a chance, if even just in small ways. All those small chances have got to built up eventually :) Great chapter.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know I'm finally getting caught up and am a newly-devoted fan. Your work is awesome!

There's so much going on. I love the fics with the miscommunications. They're so frustrating but so tantalizing that they just keep you coming back and coming back for more. Great job!

Can't wait to see what's next.

oh i just love it when you update! you really are a very talented writer. i love how you are able to convey their uncomfortableness without going overboard. its just very believable. ALTHOUGH i was hoping that they would let something slip in a lovely drunken stupor...but i guess ill just have to keep waiting then. good on me...i get to read more!

You write them so well....and its not over the top and it doesn't jump, if that makes sense, its fluent, yeah, fluent. Makes sense. Huh.

The whole Bryan thing made my heart stop for a moment there, as did the whole 'My Tara' thing, great stuff :bow

*Worshipping you!*

Great stuff!

tinnakaren Aw shucks. Well thank you very much. I'm tempted to ask, "mom?" but I really don't want to know if you are in fact my over-proud mother. Instead, I'll just blush profusely at the compliment and move on. :)

Irishgrl3 Superhero Tara is the best. Mmmm. And yes, Buffy is a walking hormone, at least in my mind. Hopefully some out loud thinking will happen... eventually. Thanks for reading.

littlecrazy80 You just caught up with this story, I just wrote it - it all works out! :) And thank you for the 'amazing' - I'm just amazed by the fact that someone has used that word to describe something I've written.

WickedReds Oh lord, well, there will be some waiting. These girls are dense. (You know, in a good way). Thanks for reading.

snuggle79 Thanks, I too like when they talk one-on-one, it's easy to write. Hopefully they'll find time to converse more in the near future.

tarawhipped Again with the blushing. Thanks, and yes, rest assured that eventually clues will be had. No *way* I'm putting all of us through this for nothing.

lipkandy This is definitely a slow burn story, so don't worry about the sudden pouncing (although, really, how great would that be in the more frustrating moments). And yes, Buffy. Buffy, Buffy, Buffy - her mutualness should come in handy at some point in the future. You know, if the girls ever get brave enough to confide in her or if Buffy ever gets independently clued in. Thanks so much for reading.

KiwiAlcyone Hi Alcy. :) Hopefully this next update will get into why Willow is so reluctant. She definitely has a reason, although who knows if it's a *good* reason. Thank you very much for the kind words re: the writing. It's tricky finding a pace that moves things along but allows for the little moments (I'm a sucker for the little moments). I'm so very glad you're enjoying it.

willowhanded *sigh* I'm right there with you. Thanks for reading. :)

DreamsToDream Thanks! I agree, acting will be good. They'll get there... you know, eventually.

Artemis They are making progress, and yes, you are so right - to go forward they have to go back. Which will probably make me seriously unpopular, but you know... c'est la W/T. Thanks very much, Chris.

wimpy0729 I wonder if blushing can turn permanent (cause, I'm working on some serious prolonged redness here). Thanks very much for the kind words, and a big yes with the tantalizing miscommunications. It makes the eventual end result all the sweeter.

alysagoddess85 Aw thank you. You love when I update, I love when you comment -- lotta love right now. :) And thanks, I try not to go overboard. We'll see whether I'm able to resist the maudlin as this thing progresses...

Wired vixen Brilliant! (Just like those two Guinness scientists - "Guinness in a can - brilliant!") Yeah, good ol' Bryan, almost mucking up the works, yet ultimately allowing them to get a little closer. He's a good man, that Bryan.

Okay, update time.

Thoughts in italics

It was almost 1:30 in the morning and Willow still couldn't sleep. She moved onto her back and opened her eyes. Her bedroom was softly lit from the nearly full moon outside. It was bright enough so that she could see some detail in her room, the computers resting on her desk across the room from the foot of her bed for instance, but not so light that she was unable to sleep.

No, there was an entirely different reason for that. Tara.

Willow closed her eyes at the thought of the woman. She had been trying to quiet her busy mind for the last forty minutes, to no avail. Every time she thought she was close to sleep, her mind pulled a fast one and slipped in an image of the blonde, or a snippet of the woman's voice, and Willow would begin to think.

Of Tara in the kitchen. How the whisps of blonde hair gently fell about her face and neck as she cut mangoes for dinner. How strong her hands looked as she worked with the different ingredients, cupping, pinching. How her full breasts would strain against the cotton top when she would pause for a moment, resting her hands on her hips, biting her lower lip while considering her next move. How red those lips were in the warm kitchen.

Please... not tonight... Willow thought, knowing where these thoughts were leading. Where she had allowed herself to be led on so many nights since she discovered her attraction to the blonde three years ago. Her hips were aching to roll, and when she shifted a little to ease her growing tension, her legs fell open slightly.

She took in a deep, steadying breath and felt her chest rise and fall, sweat beginning to accumulate on her neck. She reached up and ran her left hand across her neck, her forearm rubbing against her breast in the process. She had to bite back a groan. She removed her arm to her side, opened her eyes and looked down her body, where her stiff nipples pressed against the thin material of her tank top. She knew she didn't have much in the breast department, but on nights like these, with thoughts like these, they were more than enough. She moved her left hand to her rib cage, and pushing up, cupped the underside of her right breast. She moved her thumb, passing the digit over her erect nipple. She released a shuddering breath at the contact.

She shifted again, her legs falling open a little further. Her breath was growing increasingly ragged, soft, deep sighs in the dark that grew her excitement. She arched her back slightly, as she put her right hand on her stomach. She drew a lazy circle and then slowly moved the hand down, slipping it eventually into her flimsy cotton pajamas. She squeezed her breast gently with her left and sighed.

She would usually run her hand over her damp panties, tease her mound and mind with the growing signs of her arousal, but tonight there was no need. She was ready, and desperately desired more friction than teasing would allow. She slipped her hand beneath the waistband of her cotton underwear, and slid her hand down through wet curls, squeezing her breast a little more roughly, pinching her nipple between her thumb and hand. She squirmed a bit, opening her legs wider in anticipation of her fingers. She rubbed them lightly down and over her outer lips, feeling the liquid trickling out.

"Oh god..." She moaned, almost silently, thinking of how wet she'd be if Tara ever sought her out in the night. She let her fingers move down between her folds and she slipped in her arousal. So wet... She had tried this before, thinking of others, and while it was good, it was just... good. But when Tara was on her mind... she groaned quietly, pressing into the abundant wetness. "Oh god..."

She thought of the skirt Tara had worn to the club, the kick pleat dancing over her strong, creamy calves as she moved. How she'd like to tickle her fingers over those same calves, how she'd tease Tara before taking a handful of the skirt and pulling it up the blonde's leg slowly. Willow stroked the length of herself deliberately, bottom to top, intentionally missing the bundle of nerves she knew was waiting for her. Her hips rocked forward after her fingers slightly, as if begging for more.

Her mind showed her Tara's collarbones, peaking out into the area the peasant top she wore at dinner revealed. Willow imagined running the material of that shirt's neckline between her fingers and thumb, from the collar to where it met in a 'v' at Tara's breasts. How soft the blonde's skin would feel under her knuckles; how Tara might moan if Willow pushed the palm of her hand into the inside of her breast.

Willow released a low, quiet moan herself, stroking along her length again slowly, bottom to top, again missing her clit. She loved how her body felt when she thought about Tara. Awake. Alive. Bold. She felt like she could feel every cell in her body; the muscles in her back as she tensed and relaxed at her fingers touch, her thighs as they did the same. It was wanton, electric and powerful; things that Willow had been afraid sex would never be years ago.

It hadn't been like this when she was younger, exploring her body tentatively, afraid that even alone she'd do something wrong, or crass. Or even later, when she had been wrapped up in her crushes on Xander, on Oz. She had to work to find release then. This, her body's natural reaction and obvious arousal, this was because of the blonde, and she secretly rejoiced in it.

I shouldn't be doing this... Willow briefly thought guiltily, pulling her hand up to her curls. Tara's just down the hall, and isn't there something sort of, wrong, depraved, about doing *this* while thinking about a friend? Willow's brow furrowed, her breath still ragged. But she isn't a friend, Willow thought, pushing her hand back down into herself. She's Tara. She sighed, contentedly, massaging her breast, running her thumb over the nipple, before migrating to the other breast. She's the woman that the redhead adored. She cupped her left breast and squeezed. The woman she loved.

The images started to come unbidden to her mind, faster, just as her hand's movements sped up. Tara's half smile. Tara's ass as she leaned over the kitchen counter, her weight on one leg forcing her hip out. Tara's hips when she walked. Tara's arms as they raised in the air when she tied back her hair in a loose bun. Tara.

Willow let her thumb graze over her clit and she bucked, swallowing a grunt. Oh god, she thought, this is gonna be fast. Her hand was slick, her buttocks squeezing and relaxing, ready. Willow took a couple of breaths, paused in all movements, trying to corral her mind. She wanted one more thought, one more image of the blonde that she could hold on to and focus on as she came. She saw Tara, standing in the doorway, in a flimsy nightgo-- Oh my god.

Willow shifted suddenly, sitting up some on her left elbow as she saw Tara standing in the doorway in a flimsy nightgown.

Willow's eyes were wide at the sight of the blonde and she sat up fully. She quickly pulled her hand out from between her legs and held it away from her under the comforter. Not sure what to do with the now-offending extremity, she wiped it quickly--and she hoped subtly--on the sheets. Note to self Willow thought oddly coherent for a split second, do laundry tomorrow. She continued to stare at the blonde, speechless, her mind racing. How long has she been standing there? Did she see, did she hear--

"I was on my way back to bed from the bathroom and I heard some noise." Willow closed her eyes and sighed in humiliation. "Are you okay?" The blonde asked softly, her quiet voice carrying in the night.

"Yeah," Willow croaked. She sighed again, biting her lip and then nodded, embarrassed. "Yes," she repeated, this time her voice under control. "I'm just, having a hard time sleeping. I'm sorry if I disturbed-"

"You didn't." The blonde quickly reassured. There was a moment's silence. "May I come in?"

Willow's mind swam. She tried to think, had Tara ever been in her room since she moved in? She looked at the expectant blonde and nodded sharply once. Tara crossed to the bed and sat down. Willow's left hand lay dead at her side, the right still under the comforter.

"Why can't you sleep?" Tara asked gently. "Work stuff?"

Willow nodded. Sure, why not. Yes, work stuff. "Uh huh."

"You look kind of tense." Tara whispered.

"Oh..." Willow thought of an appropriate answer. "My back, and shoulders, kind of tight, so...hard to get cozy." She finally answered numbly.

"Want me to see if I can help?" Tara asked quietly, helpfully. Willow's brow knit together in confusion. "Here, lay on your stomach." Tara scooched back, giving Willow room to roll onto her stomach.

Willow looked to the space and then back up. "No, really you don't have to-"

"I know. But just let me try." They held each other's gaze for a long moment before Willow nodded and obediently moved to her stomach. She was careful to keep her right hand close, and she tucked it under her body as she settled.

Tara reached down and tugged on Willow's right elbow, to free the hand but Willow quickly spoke, "No! I mean, this is how I usually sleep, so..."

"Okay." Tara said. "I just want you to be comfortable."

Not going to happen. Willow thought, her body rigid at the blonde's proximity. Tara reached down and began to gently rub Willow's shoulders through the redhead's tank top. Oh god... Willow shuddered, trying hard not to moan.

Tara rubbed for a few minutes, deepening the pressure and moving from the redhead's shoulders to below her shoulder blades. Willow became more and more relaxed, and when Tara rubbed along her spine, she couldn't help but sigh contentedly. A half smile quirked across Tara's features. "I think someone likes this..." she teased. Willow nodded into the pillow. Tara chuckled, and then spoke, her voice low and husky. "I think that someone might be me..."

Willow went instantly alert at that. Did she just say she likes rubbing me? I mean, massaging me? Tara's hands dipped lower onto Willow's back, and Willow found it impossible to relax again. Each swirl of the blonde's hands was getting closer and closer to her backside. Tara's hands dipped a little lower, and rubbed the fleshy area just below her hips in deep circles. Willow couldn't help it, and groaned into the pillow. She was instantly mortified, and her body tensed.

"Hey," Tara said softly, pausing her motion then sliding her left hand up Willow's back as she stretched out and laid down to the redhead's right. Willow turned her head to face the blonde, seeing her roommate rest her head on the pillow next to her face. The blonde licked her lips and reached her left hand out, tucking a lock of hair behind Willow's ear. Willow closed her eyes at the touch. When she opened them, she saw Tara staring at her intently.

"Tara..." She whispered softly, her voice full of need, and uncertainty.

"Shhh..." Tara said gently, pushing on Willow's right shoulder to get the redhead to roll onto her side so they could face each other. Inches apart, they were lost in each other. Willow had so many questions, but she couldn't seem to focus long enough to string together a sentence. She let her eyes drift over Tara's features, her eyes passionate, heavy lidded, her lips full. She didn't even feel Tara's hand move down her right arm, past her elbow, and toward her hand. She snapped out of her reverence however, when Tara's hand closed on her wrist. The thought of where that hand had been previous to Tara's appearance caused Willow to panic; her eyes went wide and she tried to jerk her hand away. But Tara's grasp was tight, and she pulled the hand toward her.

NO! Willow's mind screamed as she watched the hand move toward Tara's face. Her chest rose and fell quickly, but Tara's eyes serenely stayed locked on her own.

As soon as she had the slim, freckled hand to her face, Tara closed her eyes and deeply inhaled, moaning, "Willow..." Willow's jaw dropped and she lay transfixed at the sight. Tara turned her head and pressed a wet, open mouth kiss on the redhead's palm, her tongue reaching out and tasting the skin, tasting her, and Willow almost came. She closed her eyes and breathed heavily, trying to remain in control of her now trembling body. It was almost too much. She opened her eyes, Tara again staring at her. "Willow..." She again said, this time softer, full of need, adoration. She moved the hand from her face, pulling it down to her collarbone, where she pressed it into the exposed flesh.

Willow bit back a moan, and Tara began to guide the redhead's hand down her body. Over her chest, slowing as the hand travelled over her round breast, the taut nipple grinding into Willow's palm as it passed below. Willow's hand then travelled over the blonde's ribs, down further over her belly. She could feel every curve under the barely-there material. Willow couldn't tear her eyes away from the blonde's face, mesmerized by her slightly parted lips, air passing through them irregularly as the girl softly panted. The sweat forming on Tara's brow, and the deep, dark eyes. "Willow..." Tara again sighed, moving the redhead's hand between her legs, pressing it into the wetness, the softness, hiding just below the nightgown's material."Yesss..." She hissed.

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Willow's eyes flew open and she saw her room flooded in sunlight. Her brow furrowed in confusion, and she moved her thick tongue sluggishly in her tired mouth as she blinked. She squinted, trying to place herself, the beeping shrill in the background. She twisted her head, pulling the tangled sheets with her as she looked to her left; the bed empty. She looked to the door, closed as she remembered it being when she climbed into bed the night before. She flopped her head back down into the pillow and pressed her eyes shut tight in disappointment. It had been a dream. She moved her head to the side and fought off a sob, taking a deep breath to calm herself. Finally composed, she rotated toward her night stand and turned off her alarm with her left hand. She extricated her right hand from where it rested between her legs, and freed from the sheets, threw her legs over the side of the bed and stood. She walked to the closet, grabbed two towels and headed to the bathroom.

Once there she quickly turned the nozzles to start the shower. She held her hand under the stream until it felt sufficiently warm and then quickly stripped. Her busy mind raced, and her cheeks were hot. Just a dream. Her lips drew into a thin line as she entered the shower, the warm water blasting her shoulders and matting her hair to her face. She shook her head ruefully and picked up a bar of soap, rubbing it harshly across her fevered skin.

Of course it was just a dream, it will always be, just a dream. Willow put the bar down and stepped into the stream, letting the water wash away the suds. It'll always be a dream, because you're a coward. Willow picked up the shampoo bottle and squirted the liquid into her open palm, then rubbed it into her scalp furiously. Because you're too afraid to tell your friends and family that you're gay. Willow stepped into the stream and let the water rush through her locks. Because you're so afraid that if there were no obstacles, if you were out and you told her how you felt... she would say no. Her chin started to tremble and she rested her palms flat on the shower wall. She reached down and quickly turned the nozzle until the hot water cut out, and the stream turned icy cold. Tears ran down her face as she stood under the freezing water. Tears, because it had been such a wonderful dream.

Tara awoke to the sound of the shower going. She rolled onto her side, the down comforter loosely resting on top of her, her head resting heavily on the soft pillow. She opened one eye and checked the clock. 7:00. She sighed and closed the eye. She could easily drift back to sleep; she had no reason to rise at such an early hour.

Her sleepy lips broke into a wide grin. The noise that woke her was Willow readying herself for the day. Willow in the shower. Tara's smiled widened. Willow in the shower... She knew the redhead liked to get up early on work days. The girl didn't need to be in to work until 8:30, but she liked giving herself an hour in the morning to read the news on her laptop as she drank a cup of coffee in the kitchen.

She sighed happily and pulled a spare pillow to her chest, hugging it tightly. "My Tara." She thought back to the glowing smile Willow had given her when they sat close on the couch at the club the night before, how they lost themselves in the other, if even for a brief moment. She was there with me, right? The blonde sighed again, then giggled quietly, remembering Willow popping the olives she had given her into her mouth. Such a beautiful mouth. Tara thought. I wonder what she likes for breakfast... The pause was brief before Tara rose from bed to find out.
