Hiya Dixon, I was pleased to see an update of this.

All the Scoobs (well, except Anya, but that's typical of her) showing their support of Willow, that was so lovely. That's what friendship is, unconditional support.

Spike's sacrifice is noble I supose, but he has so much he needs to make amends for, that I think this just cancels his debt. Or maybe I'm just being harsh!

Dixon, I've been following this story and just gotta tell you, that I :love it. The first few chapters were so heartbreaking. I could take many things, but Willowpain is not one of them, gosh that hurt, but in a good way!

I love how you've written Spike, he was, after all, my third favorite character, before they screwed everyone in Season Sux. I also appreciate the way you've written Dawn. Personally, there's been so little to like about her, but I really like that she stood up to Buffy and Giles. Out of the mouths of babes! And thank goodness Buffy came to her senses, that girl is so self righteous, when it suits her. It pisses me off! But you've done a marvelous job with this story. :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

Hey Kittens,

Long time no post eh?

First and mainly - I AM SO SORRY.

It's just, some stuff happened in my life and then some more stuff happened and... well, it just seemed like a lot of painful and difficult things were attached to my writing. After that, it became almost impossible to write and … I just fell away from writing fic all together.

However, it has been pointed out to me lately, that since my life has long since regained some semblance of normalcy - that I should quit being such a great big donkey and at least attempt to pick up my writing again.

An old friend of mine recently contacted me and, well... she yelled at me kittens. I deserved, but still. She yelled at me and told me that I had no business starting stories if I wasn't going to finish them. She told me that I was a great big donkey for leaving readers (her w/ a J/7 fic in particular) hanging and that I wasn't being fair to myself either.

So, I did as I was told and attempted to pick up my writing again. I was also told that if I could get started - that it would get easier to keep on writing. And I'll be damned if the woman wasn't right yet again - I hate that.

In short (after so much long), for those of you, if any, who even remember this fic, or those that aren't too mad at me and want to see this fic play out and finally reach its conclusion - well, that should happen over the next little while.

And once again kittens - I am Very, Very, Very SORRY.

I'll be posting a part or two tonight and again, I really am so sorry for leaving you kittens hanging.

“Sweet Jesus Willow, what in the hell is going on?” asked Xander as the redhead emerged from the cave.

“We wait,” she said simply as she looked on at the cave, waiting.

“Okay, fine. We wait. I mean, it’s not like we have any choice. But I think you need to make with some explaining while we sit here with our no-choice waiting,” said an uneasy Xander. “What’s going on in there?”

“The end of a love and the rebirth of another,” Giles supplied sagely.

“Could you maybe translate there Giles Angelou?”

“Spike’s going to bring her back” answered Buffy as she emerged from the cave.

"And how is he going to do that?" asked Xander.

"By sacrificing his soul," answered Buffy.

"What is taking so long?" asked Dawn who was still reeling from the shock of finding out about Spike.

"I don't get it," offered Xander who as confused as Dawn. "He went through all of that trouble to get his soul back and now he's just going to give it up, just like that. I don't know about this, something's not right here."

"He got his soul back so we could be together," said Buffy. She was sitting on a large rock and staring at the ground. "He thought that if he had his soul that we could be together … that maybe I could love him back."

"And you can't?" asked Anya.

For the first time in over half an hour the slayer looked up, "No," she sighed. "I could never love Spike that way."

"What way?"

"The way that Willow and Tara love each other. Or the way you and Xander do."

"Someone's coming," said Dawn as she looked to the mouth of the cave.

"Tara?" Willow rushed forward only to be met by Spike who looked a little worse for wear. "Spike what happened? Where's Tara?"

"It didn't work?" asked Dawn as tears began to well in her sad eyes.

"It better of worked," Spike mumbled wearily as he sat down. "I kept up my end of the bargain so ole Lurkey better make good on his end and deliver Red's bird."

"But she's not here," supplied Anya.

Buffy quietly moved closer to the platinum haired man, "Spike?" He looked up at his name and the slayer took the opportunity to look into his eyes to see. He was soulless again. "How are you?"

"Just spiffy."

"Spike, where's Tara?" Willow asked as she moved towards the cave.

"He's gone luv. And when I came to I was all by my lonesome in there."

"Anya, Xander don't let Willow go in there alone," ordered the slayer and the two set off after the redhead. "Giles, do you have any idea about this?"

The watcher rubbed his head, "No I'm afraid I don't. This is far outside my expertise."

"You don't think," Buffy swallowed and looked stricken, "she won't wake up the same way I did. Giles, Tara isn't strong enough to-"

"Let's hope that's not the case," interrupted Giles. "Let's get to a phone and cont-"

"Don't bother," interrupted Spike.

"I already took care of it."

"But I thought you didn't-"

"How did you-"

"Hold up a bloody minute and let me explain won't you?" growled the frustrated vamp.

"Spike, what is going on?" demanded Buffy.

"Don't get your knickers in a knot Slayer. I moved Blondie's body when I found out that Red was going to try and use the magics to resurrect her. That would have been the last thing we would have needed."

Buffy thought back to when Dawn attempted to resurrect their mother and what Willow and Tara had told her about resurrection; how people could come back wrong. Spike was right, the last thing she needed was to have face off with Tara.

"So where is Tara's body?" interjected Giles.

"I stashed her coffin in the McAlester crypt. It's only a couple of yards away from her grave."

Buffy ran her hands over her face, "I still want to get to a phone and call Clem to go and check on her. Coming back from the dead isn't the easiest thing in the world – even if you don't have to dig your way out."

Willow, Anya and Xander emerged from the cave.

"She's not in there – it's empty," offered Xander.

"It really didn't work," sobbed Willow.

"Don't worry Willow," Dawn piped up, "Giles thinks that she came back the same way Buffy did. We just have to go home and get her."

"What? I completely forgot about that. We have to get back," exclaimed Willow as she raced towards the safari bus.

"Well, what are we waiting for?" mumbled Spike as he set off slowly, "Let's go."

'Ouch, ouch, ouch,' she thought. 'Since when does waking up cause so much pain?" She slowly opened her eyes. "Oh, I suppose that sleeping on the ground could make for some painful waking."

She groaned as she pushed herself up into a sitting position, "Owie, I haven't been that uncomfortable since I…" her voice trailed off as she tried to take in her surroundings, "since I woke up and didn't know where I was."

"What? Buffy what is it?" Dawn asked anxiously as she watched her sister hand up the telephone.

"Tara?" Willow asked apprehensively.

"It's empty."

Buffy looked up at the group, "Tara's coffin … it was empty."

PostPosted: Wed Mar 26, 2003 10:32 pm

The young woman sat with her legs crossed, her hands resting on her knees, her eyes were closed in deep concentration and she was mumbling softly.

After a few minutes she cupped her hands together and gradually raised them above her head. She continued to mumble softly and ever so slowly a small light appeared in her hands and grew brighter until the area surrounding her was lit up similar to a pre-dawn light.

The unusual light caught the attention of several of the cave dwellers and they moved closer to investigate.

The young woman felt the light emerge from her palms and she opened her eyes. When she saw the dim light she inwardly cursed the lethargy she awoke with. She sighed knowing that she wasn't going to be able to do any better with taxing her already depleted energy reserves so the young woman squinted and peered into the surrounding darkness.

A noise to her left pulled her attention in that direction. She squinted hard into the darkness trying to get a glimpse of what was making the noise because whatever it was – it was moving closer.

The young woman felt herself begin to sweat despite the cool temperature and she was sure that her heart was going to pound its way right out of her chest.

The creature moved closer still and she gasped when the vampire moved close enough to the circle of light for her to make out the bumpy head and the fangs protruding from its lips.

"Uh oh."

Buffy looked up at the group, "Tara's coffin … it was empty."

"What do you mean empty?" asked Xander.

"So she's alive?" Willow asked with hope.

"Wait a minute," interrupted the slayer, "Clem said it was empty but he also said that it didn't look like anybody had been around for a few days."

"What does that mean?"

"There were no footprints and there was a thin layer of dust on the coffin. It looked like it hadn't been touched for days."

"So where is she?" asked Willow.

"I don't know," Buffy answered sadly. The slayer stepped towards her friend, "I'm sorry Will."

"What about the house?" asked Dawn. "Maybe she's at the house," the teen shrugged, "it's where I'd be."

"Buffy, tell Clem to check the house and UC Sunnydale, Oh, and have him get all the friendly demons to hit the streets and look for her," said Willow.

"No," Spike said quickly, "Tell Clem to go alone."

"Why?" asked Xander. "Shouldn't we have a search team of more then just Clem?"

"Next stop rocket science," the platinum haired vamp muttered underneath his breath.

"No, we don't to spread the word that a friend of the slayer is alone and possibly vulnerable," clarified the watcher.

"How much longer until we can get on the plane?" Anya asked.

"Just a few more minutes," answered Willow as she dropped down heavily into a chair.

Dawn walked up behind the witch and wrapped her arms around Willow's shoulders and gave her a reassuring squeeze. "She's okay, I know she is."

Willow reached up and squeezed the teens arm, "Me too. But I need to see her."

Dawn hugged her again and smiled, "Soon."

"Enter onto the plane," came the accented voice of the pilot in broken English.

"Why do I know that there isn't going to be a movie on this flight," sighed Anya as she made her way towards the small airplane.

The small group started to make their way to the plane except for Spike who held back and called out to the slayer.

"Spike? What's going on?" asked Buffy as she looked up at the vamp.

"I woke up from my ordeal in the desert. I'm going to check and see if maybe red's bird ended up in the same way."

"Tara might be here?"

"She might. She might also be in Hollywood at Ellen's pool party," retorted Spike. "She could be anywhere. Resurrection isn't exactly a science luv. I'm only sticking around – just in case - and to see if I can maybe get something from the locals."

The slayer studied Spike for a long, hard moment before speaking, "You're never coming back, are you?"

Spike blinked, "Are you daft slayer? Of course I'm coming back. I just have a few things here I have to take care of."

Buffy looked Spike in his eyes and tried to determine if he was telling the truth or not. She may not have loved him – but she wasn't quite sure if she was ready to say goodbye.

The slayer finally broke off the look and nodded, "I'll see you in Sunnydale then. Bye Spike."

Spike just dipped his head and watched as the blonde jogged over to the plane and climbed up the stairs. Buffy turned and gave him one last look before disappearing into the plane.

"Bye luv."

"Okay, st-stay calm," she told herself, "it's o-only one vamp. Just b-be calm."

The night dweller moved closer, almost stalking, and he snarled at the woman holding the dim light.

"Shoo! Go a-away!"

The vamp snarled again, only this time with delight. No rats for supper tonight.

"I d-don't want to hurt you."

"Don't worry," the vamp moved closer still, "you won't."

"I'm friends with the slayer."

The approaching vamp stopped his advance and looked around quickly.

Seeing her opportunity the woman seized it, "You don't want to m-mess with a friend of the slayer, believe me."

The vamp stepped even further away and shrunk down while looking around nervously, "The slayer is here?" he asked in whisper.

The young woman nodded vigorously, "She is. You don't think she'd let me come here by myself do you?"

The vampire looked like he was going to wet himself, "She shouldn't have left you here alone there are hundreds of vamps down here."

Hundreds!?! "Um, s-she said she w-won't be long. In fact, she should be back a-any minute now. Maybe you should j-just go on and… shoo."

The vamp cautiously stepped closer, "How about we make a deal? I keep you safe while you wait for the slayer and in return – you tell her not to, " he swallowed hard, "you know."

The young woman stood up slowly, careful to keep the light going. "You know, I think you were right – I shouldn't be down here. How about, you escort me out of here and I'll tell Buffy not to dust you? Deal?"

The vamp looked at her suspiciously, "But you said that she was going to meet you here. If you leave and the slayer comes back – she might think I did something. No, we wait right here."

The young woman smiled reassuringly, "No need to worry about that. I'll contact her and tell her the new plan. So, we should … come on, lead the way."

"How will you contact her?"

The young woman held up the glowing orb in her hand, "Does this look like a flashlight to you?"

The vamp frowned, "I see your point, follow me."

"So, where exactly are you leading me to… exactly?" asked the young woman as she followed the vamp and her eyes roamed the darkness of the cave.

"Me first," said the vamp as he navigated their way through the tunnels of the cave, "I ask a question and then you ask one."

"Why is the slayer roaming around in the old high school?"

"Rumor has it that the vampire that attacked a friend of hers the other night was hiding down here. She's only here looking for him. She takes attacks on her friends very personally."

The vampire nodded, "Your turn."

"How old were you?"

"What?!" the vamp stopped and spun around to face the woman.

"How old were you when you were turned?" she asked undaunted.

The vamp looked at her curiously for a moment before turning around and resuming their exit. "I was 21."

"I'm so sorry."

"Me too, let's go."

"Can't you do a spell or something?" Dawn asked the redheaded wiccan.

"Yeah, do that yoga lesbian light thing," added Anya from her seat beside Willow.

"The what now?" Xander asked while Willow just shrugged.

Anya rolled her eyes at her former fiancé and looked at Willow like she was somewhat slow, "Can't you do that thing with the little light? The thing that Tara did the night we brought Buffy back and then those Harley Davidson demons chased us through the woods."

"Oh, the Tinkerbell light thing?"

"No," interrupted Giles, "no magic or spells."

Willow dropped her head and her gaze fell to her lap, "Giles is right. No more magic."

Anya looked thoughtful, "Yeah, that's probably a good idea."

"Well, this is uncomfortable," said Xander. "Hey, watch me juggle these parachutes."

"Xander, get away from the parachutes and go sit next to Buffy," ordered Anya. "There's too much weight on this side of the plane. What, are you trying to kill us or something."

"Oh, this is going to be a fun trip home," mumbled Buffy.

"Buffy, did you try Clem again? Any luck?" Dawn asked trying to redirect the attention away from Willow and onto something else.

"No such. We'll have to wait until we land or until we get on a real plane," the slayer answered.

"We'll be landing soon," the co-pilot yelled back from the cockpit, "but there is a storm below us so make sure that your seatbelts are secure."

"And the fun just keeps on coming," grumbled Xander as he tightened his seatbelt and reached for a parachute.

Oh Wow! It's been... how long since I last read this fic? Back in June???? I remember a lot of angst and grieve, but that's about it. Think I'll read it again.

And tell your friend she had every right to yell at you! Unfinished fics are so not fair. Heh. I know, cause I'm one of those writers too.

Anyway, good to have ya back! I'll be off reading now!

Hey Kittens,

I'm surprised that anyone even remembered this fic or that you're even speaking to me - I personally think that I deserved some yelling.

Well anyway, thanks for your feedback kittens and I promise no more disappearing acts this time.

"The surface is just up that ladder," said the vamp.

The young woman smiled at the vamp, "Thanks Richard."

He just nodded at the blonde as she started to ascend the ladder. "Wait," he reached out and grasped her arm. "It's still dark out."

The young woman smiled at him, "I know, but I have to get home. I'll be okay."

The vamp shook his head negatively, "There's an old crypt … it's just a couple of meters from the opening. It was used as a groundskeepers shack until he … but anyway, it's never been used for anything else. It's empty and it can be locked from the inside. Stay there until it's light – you'll be safe."

"Thank you," the young woman nodded and then added, "Goodbye Richard."

The vampire stepped away from the young woman, "Goodbye Tara."

"Well?" started Buffy. "Clem said she wasn't at the house, the school or the cemetery."

"So, what's the plan then?" Xander asked as they made their way out of the Sunnydale airport.

"We split up and look everywhere," said the slayer. "Xander, Anya, I want you guys to hit the campus and then town. Giles, you and Dawn can check the magic shop and then head to the house. Me and Willow are going to hit the cemetery and then Spike's place."

"Buffy-" the teen started to protest but was interrupted by her sister.

"Dawn, we don't have time for this now. If Tara goes anywhere it'll be there. I need you at the house … please?"

The relented with a dip of her head and moved off with Giles in the direction of the magic shop while Xander and Anya started for the Sunnydale campus.

It was when they were finally left alone that Willow spoke. "Why can't we find her Buffy?"

"I don't know Will," the slayer gave her friend a one-armed hug as they headed towards the cemetery, "but I'm not giving up. Come on."

"Unh," the young woman grunted as she pushed back against the door, trying to close it.

"Aw, don't be that way honey," taunted the vampire who was trying to force his way into the groundskeepers shack to get at the young woman, "I just want to take you to out and maybe grab a bite to eat."

"Oof," grunted the woman as she pushed against the door and fought to get the latch closed, "I, uh, hate, ungh, vampire," the latch clicked shut and the blonde sighed in relief as she slid to the floor, "humor."

"Damn," the vampire punched the locked door in front of him, "You can't stay in there forever, honey. You'll have to come out eventually."

"I'm staying here until the sun comes up," yelled the young woman, "or until my friend, the slayer, gets here."

The vampire laughed, "Nice try sweetie, but everyone knows the slayer is gone."

"Gone? What do you mean gone?"

"Come on out here and we can talk about it, baby."

A low grow preceded the sound of the latch being pulled away and the door to the groundskeepers shack opened to reveal one incensed blonde.

"Well now," smiled the vamp.

"What happened to the slayer?" demanded the young woman.

The vamp laughed again, "Relax baby, she's only out of town. Now, enough about the slayer, why don't we talk about me and you and how much fun we're going to have."

The young woman smiled dangerously, "Two things."

"Yes?" the vampire asked giddily.

The young woman held up her hand and ticked off her fingers as she counted, "First, thanks for the information on the slayer. And second…"

The vampire licked his lips, he loved fun prey, "And second?"

The young woman smiled and then her eyes narrowed. It was then that she twisted her hands around and aimed them at the vampire.

The vampire blinked in confusion and then his yellow eyes widened in fear as the blinding light emerged from the woman's palms. Mere seconds later … her was dust.

The blonde moved slowly back into the shack, locked the door and slid wearily down to the floor, "Don't call me, baby."

"Maybe we should check the police department," suggested Anya as she walked down the street with her former fiancé.

"Oh yes," affirmed Xander, "Hi, a friend of ourd died recently but we decided that since that SUCKED, we went ahead and did something about it. So, doing the normal thing and all, we went ahead and resurrected her but only, we're not sure where we resurrected her to. Have you seen her by any chance?"

"You know Xander, it's only considered humor IF IT'S FUNNY!"

"Hey, how about not yelling at the one who didn't have the stupid idea," the construction worker shot back.

"The idea wasn't stupid," challenged Anya, "you are."

"And how do you figure that?"

"When Buffy first came back she was confused and disoriented – she didn't know what was going on," argued Anya. "The police might have picked her up if they hadn't been run out of town by a horde of demons on motorcycles. So, maybe they found Tara wondering around and took her to the hospital or home or something?"

"And don't you go yelling at me about stupid," shouted the former demon, "I'm not the one who summoned a dancing demon that tried to kill us all, I'm not the one who had the bright idea of leaving my fiancé at the alter, I'm not one who tried to bribe our Nigerian guide with Nair, I'm not the one-"

"Hey, it's the money there," he defended.

"They're called naira's, you idiot."

"It's not like that's common knowledge you know," Xander argued back, "and why are you yelling at me?"

"I'm yelling because I want to and because I'm worried about Tara and because… and because you're an idiot."

Xander dropped down onto a bench along the sidewalk and looked up at his ex-girlfriend, "I'm worried too," he said softly.

"I have a bad feeling about this, Xander," said the former demon as she dropped down next to him.

"Hey," the construction worker slid his arm around her shoulders, "Let's not go having any feelings of a bad nature. We don't know anything yet."

Anya sighed and dropped her head against her ex-fiancé's shoulder, "I'm not sorry I yelled – it made me feel better. But sorry for what I said. You're not an idiot."

"Sure I am," he squeezed her reassuringly.

The ex-demon just shook her head and stood up, "Come on idiot."

The sunlight streamed through the small window and landed on the young woman lying in heap on the floor. She grimaced when the light settled on her face and she tried to turn her head to avoid the bright rays.

Being ever persistent, the sun continued to shine on the sleeping blonde and it finally forced her to open a bleary eye. It was looking around and taking in her surroundings that the events of the previous night came flooding back and she groaned.

"Uh, what a way to spend the night," she muttered as she pushed herself into a sitting position and blinked to clear her vision.

As stiff as she was from sleeping in a heap on the floor of a crypt, the blonde slowly pushed herself to her feet and pulled back the latch to the door. With much effort and just a little cursing she managed to get the heavy door open and she stumbled out onto the grass.

"Okay," she said to herself, "get yourself home and then find out what in the heck is going on."

Something was going on. She awoke alone in an in underground cave, one that was full of vampires and had no memory of how she got there, or why she was there in the first place.

She forced her fatigued body to start moving in the direction of the house, "Oh yeah, there's definitely no place like home."

I was a stealthy lil' lurker when you started this fic. Your work (and others of your caliber) brought me from the shadows. I'm glad for that. I think the person who hollered at you trusted you enough to do so and that's valuable.
I personally think that I deserved some yelling.
Only you would know.:blush But I'm just glad you're back.

And back you are!:applause I was all set to comment on your first updates when...lo and behold you updated *again*!:eek When you kick it into gear you really go into overdrive.:)

Things I like:

1. Spike willing to sacrifice his hard-won soul for Tara. He had nothing to gain by this (certainly not Buffy's love). And I like that it didn't kill him even tho' he may choose to "disappear" of his own volition;

2. "Shoo! Go a-away!" Cracks me up...only Tara would rely on something so inocuous to discourage a vampire!;:D

3 . Richard - he seems like a sympathetic and disoriented undead-type-person;

4. Tara's big laying scary vamp low with light!;

5. And maybe best of all
"Can't you do a spell or something?" Dawn asked the redheaded wiccan.

"Yeah, do that yoga lesbian light thing," added Anya from her seat beside Willow.
Ya' know - I was actually debating the benefits of yoga vs. pelotes. Thanks Dix for helping me make the decision!:glasses

Things I don't like:

Well not actually a "don't like" but I wonder WHO will find dear Tara first? Dawn/Giles going to the house or Buffy/Will searching the cemetary?

Whoo-hoo...I can't wait.

TY oodles~Suse p.s. You're old sign-off "Peace-Dix" has a great deal of meaning these days.S.

Hello Kittens,

I hope a good weekend was had by all...

I'm glad that you all are sticking around to see this story out with me. I promise way less angst and more goodness from here on out.

Thanks also, for all of the feedback and encouragement kittens. It is appreciated and encouraging thank you.

And Cindy Lou Who - Wow. I'm flattered and glad that I played a part in your 'outing' (so to speak) from lurkdom. I didn't know I rated a caliber - again with the wow and thank you, very much.

Now, on with the show.

"Do you really think it worked?" the teen asked as they walked down the street towards the house, "Do you think Tara is somewhere out there?"

"The evidence would seem to support that, yes," answered Giles.

"Are you mad?"

The watcher stopped and looked down at the teen, "Why would I be upset?"

Dawn kept her eyes down, "You were angry when Willow brought Buffy back."

"Dawn," Giles used his fingers to tilt the teen's head up to meet his, "I wasn't angry that she managed to resurrect, Buffy. I was…"

Giles sighed and rubbed his hands over his face, "So much could have gone wrong."

Tears pooled in the teen's eyes, "Do you think that's what happened with Tara? Something went wrong?"

The watcher pulled the young girl into an embrace, "I don't know, Dawn. I just don't know."

"What are we gonna do?"

"We're going to find her," Giles answered gravely, "no matter what."

"Did you ever notice how small this town was - except when you're looking for someone," the slayer asked conversationally. "I mean, it's like-"

"We should split up," interrupted Willow.

"Buffy, it's almost sunup; we'll be able to cover more ground that way."

"Hey," argued the slayer, "We talked about that."

"Look," said Willow, "We've been looking for hours and no one has found anything. We'll have a better chance of finding her if we can cover more ground."

"No," argued Buffy, "We'll just keep looking until we find her – we don't have to split up."

Willow stopped walking and looked at her friend, "What is going on? Why are you so against us splitting up to look?"

"Willow," Buffy started but then stopped and sighed, "We don't how that demon's magic worked…"

The redhead blinked in confusion before realization dawned on her, "You think she might've came back wrong," she accused. "You're with me incase…"

The slayer squirmed and looked guilty, uncomfortable and pained at the same time, "Willow, I-"

"Don't Buffy," interrupted the witch, "I cannot hear you say those words."

"I'm sorry."

The witch just shook her head, "I can't be near you right now."

"Hey, Will," called the slayer, "Willow please?"

"Buffy," the witch sighed, "I know. I get it, really I do. But that doesn't make it any easier. I just need to be alone right now."

"Willow," the slayer said sadly, "I'm sorry."

Willow hugged her friend, "It's not your fault and I really do understand. I promise." The witch pulled back, "I also need to be alone right now."

Buffy just nodded at her friend, "I'll check the hospital and police station again."

"I'm going back to the cemetery to look around again, I'll call you in about in hour," said the redhead as she started off.

"Hey, Will?"

The departing witch looked back, "Yeah?"

"You know that you're my best friend and I love you right?"

Willow moved back to her friend and hugged her again, "I know and I love you too." She pulled back and looked at the slayer, "Always. But I need to be alone for a while."

Buffy nodded, "Be careful."

"You know me, Captain Careful," smiled the witch as she turned to leave and promptly stumbled over an old arrangement of flowers. Willow regained her balance quickly and looked at the slayer, "see? I was so careful that I didn't even fall."

Buffy just shook her head as she stood and started back towards the hospital; all the while she was praying that she would find Tara and that she would be the same Tara they all knew and loved and not some… Well, not something else.

The blonde stumbled from the groundskeepers shack and had to lean on a nearby tombstone to keep from toppling over. The young woman steadied herself with one hand and used the other to push her tangled hair out of her face. She tucked her hair behind her ear and looked down at the tombstone she was leaning on.

"Sorry," she apologized to the stone, "I don't mean to be rude by just- why do you have the same name as me?" she asked as she looked more carefully at the headstone. "Make that the same name and same birthday."

"Where are you?" Willow asked the air around her as she walked through the cemetery. "You're not at the house, at the campus, in town, the magic shop, the woods or the park and about a half a mile of a walk left from not being in the cemetery either."

Willow sighed and ran her hands over her face. She closed her eyes and looked up into the early morning sky, "I can't remember that last time I prayed… but please… this has to be real. I need her to be real. Please?"

The redhead opened her eyes and stared at the sky, almost as if she were waiting for an answer. When none came she steeled herself and started walking again. The last leg of her search of the cemetery was the hardest place for her to be near. It was where they had buried Tara not so long ago and the few times she had been there had always been extremely difficult.

Willow took a breath, "Here we go."

The blonde moved around and dropped down in front of the gravestone and studied it. She looked at beautiful arrangements of fresh flower and picked up a card that accompanied the bouquet.

'You are missed and will never be forgotten.'

The blonde held the card for a long time and finally she looked up and glanced around the cemetery, "Okay, I'm in the cemetery and I just found a gravestone with my name and birthday on it and I can't remember the last few… hours? days? Well, however long its been, this probably can't be good."

The young woman carefully returned the card and then grabbed her wrist and felt for a pulse. "We have cardio activity and since it's morning and I haven't burst into flames… Okay, one down, infinite possibilities to go."

The blonde sighed and used her fingers to rub her aching temples. Fatigue swept over her and she moved behind the large headstone and leaned against it. She pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her crossed arms on her knees.

"This can't be happening," muttered the blonde and she buried her head in her arms.

Willow trudged up the hill that led to her lovers grave and forced herself to keep moving even as the large stone with Tara's name on it came into view.

The surface above the grave wasn't grassy yet and the redhead stopped at the foot of the grave, not wanting to walk on the dirt.

Willow studied the engraved name on the stone for a long moment and tried to will away the tears that formed in her eyes. There was a possibility that Tara was alive, somewhere. But that possibility wasn't enough to quell the ache that Willow felt throughout her body at seeing Tara's grave. Occupied or not, the sight made a lump form the redheads throat, tears slipped down her cheeks and her heart ached as it remembered the loss.

Sunlight streamed through the surrounding trees and the rays fell across Tara's grave, almost highlighting it. A sob escaped her throat before she could suppress it and Willow fought to keep her building emotions from erupting.

Willow cleared her throat and forced a small smile to her lips, "Hi," she croaked out softly.

"Hi," she heard a soft, kind of familiar, voice croak and her head shot up.

She looked around before she realized that voice had came from the other side of the gravestone she was leaning against.

The young blonde woman gulped audibly and stood up slowly.

Willow chastised herself inwardly as she wiped futility at the tears slipping down her cheeks. She had barely managed to get out the word 'hi' and she was loosing it already.

She wiped her cheeks and sniffled again when a noise caught her attention and she froze. The sound had come from the other side of the large headstone and Willow watched in shocked silence as a figure, silhouetted by the sun, slowly rose from behind the stone and stood looking back at her.

The silhouetted figure leaned forward and her face began to come into view. Willow's heart was pounding so hard and so quickly that she thought it may have stopped.

After a few inches more the silhouetted woman came into view and Willow gasped.

Bad Bad cliffhanger! Dix, I love this fic! I gotta say poor Willow, 'cause she's the one that's suffering. Tara doesn't feel any pain, yet. Of course, when things are gonna be explained, she's gonna hurt, but just seeing Willow like that makes my heart break. Please, update soon! :grin

Hey Kittens,

It's a hit and run update - as I'm on the run.

More later.

PEACE ... Dix

For the first time since she woke up in the cave the blonde felt relief and she smiled at the redhead, "Willow."

Tara looked on as Willow stood a few feet away trembling. It was upon closer inspection that the blonde noticed the tear streaks on her lover's cheeks and the sadness that was etched from her eyes to her soul. There was a heaviness surrounding the young woman and it looked like it could come crashing down on her at any moment.

Taking in the sight of her fraught partner Tara pushed her fatigued body to move forward, "What's happened?"

She couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't comprehend and couldn't believe. All she could do was stare and try not to blink – it was when she blinked that Tara would always disappear.

Tara closed the distance between her and her lover quickly but stopped just short of touching her or reaching out. She couldn't. Willow's expression told her that something was wrong, very wrong.

The haunted look in her lover's eyes was enough to make her breath catch in her throat and fear ripple through her body. "Willow?"

It was when the blonde was in touching distance and had spoke her name in the familiar melodic voice that Willow was finally able to move. With her eyes locked onto crystal blue eyes she thought that she would never see again, Willow slowly reached out towards her partner with a trembling hand.

Pale blue eyes were locked with emerald green and Tara reached out to meet the touch she knew was coming, the one she didn't see but felt coming.

Their fingers brushed softly against each other, almost shyly at first before their hands slid together, fitting perfectly like the last piece of a puzzle snapping into place.

It was just like the first time they touched – a few years before. Here they were again – touching again for the first time. At least, that's what it felt like.

Tara's eyes slid shut and she smiled in bliss while Willow gasped, closed her eyes tightly and squeezed the hand that fit so perfectly into her own.

Willow was frozen with fear. She was afraid to do anything for fear that it would cause Tara to disappear and the moment to end.

Tara felt the tenseness in her girlfriend's hold and she immediately opened her eyes, "Willow?"

The blonde got no response and she was about call out to her redheaded partner when she noticed that Willow's lips were moving slightly – she was saying something.

Tara leaned closer to hear what the other witch was saying.

"Please be real, please be real, please be real," Willow was chanting, praying and begging.

"Will?" Tara called worriedly.

Willow stopped chanting, took a deep breath and opened her eyes.

Tara called the redhead's name again but Willow didn't acknowledge her and just stared at the blonde instead.

Tara stood worried albeit patiently while her lover seemed to scrutinize her appearance.

It was a long moment before the redhead reached up with her free hand and moved it towards the blonde's face, her other hand was still locked with Tara's in a vice-like grip.

Tara watched idly as the trembling hand reached towards her face. The redhead's fingers made contact with the blonde's forehead and she gasped slightly. She wasn't expecting to find Tara's body to be warm.

Willow ran her hand back and forth over Tara's forehead and then used two fingers to trace slowly over each eyebrow all without removing her gaze from Tara's crystalline blue eyes.

Willow turned her hand and slid the back of her knuckles down Tara's cheek, used one finger to graze across the blonde's chin and then slid her hand up until she was cupping the wiccan's face.

The witch appeared to mesmerized.

With her hand on the side of Tara's face, Willow used her thumb to brush across the blonde's lips.

"So soft," she muttered softly as tears built in her eyes.

Tara was torn. She wanted to reach out and comfort and console her lover but she didn't want to interrupt whatever spell she seemed to be under either. Unable to decide, Tara opted to wait and then follow Willow's lead.

The trembling hand slid down Tara's face and came to rest on her neck; the redhead's fingers immediately finding the pulse point there.

Willow almost sobbed when she felt the strong pulse beneath her fingertips and the building tears rolled down her cheeks.

Not able to hold back any further, Tara reached out and wiped away the spilling tears, "It going to be okay, Will."

Willow let Tara's voice caress her and she blinked and leaned into the touch before regaining her focus. The hand that was resting on Tara's neck slid down to the blonde's chest and over her heart.

Willow's hand was greeted with the strong and rhythmic pounding of Tara's heartbeat. Feeling the heartbeat beneath her palm caused Willow to crumble.

"Oh Tara."

The redhead released Tara's hand and fell to her knees before the blonde. Willow threw her arms around Tara's waist, buried her face in the wiccan's stomach and began to cry.

The blonde felt her heart clench at her lover's pain and she reached out and began running her hands through the red hair of the woman wrapped around her.

"It's going to be all right, darling," soothed Tara. "I've got you. I've got you."

"Please don't go," begged Willow as she squeezed the blonde tighter. "Please don't leave me."

Tara placed her hands on either side of the redhead's face and forced her to look up into serious blue eyes and she guided her girlfriend back to her feet.

"I'm here, Will," Tara said in a soft but firm voice, "I love you and I will never leave you. Not ever"

Willow swallowed hard, closed her eyes and leaned in to rest her forehead against Tara's, "Is this real?" she asked timidly.

Tara leaned in and kissed Willow gently, "Nothing is more real then you and me, Will. Nothing."

Any energy she had fled Willow's body with that declaration and she sagged against her lover, "Let's go home?"

Tara gently kissed Willow on her forehead and they started walking slowly, "You are my home."

PEACE ... Dix
