I have to say: this Riley is likeable. He has been so sweet, helping Tara and all.
Nice update. I want more! :peace

Loved this update, Riley was really likeable here, which i never found him to be on the show, i like how he helps Willow understand that Tara needs time to get over the shock of finding out she isnt a demon. Cant wait for the next update.

The next update is in beta, so it should be up ina few days. Meantime, I appreciate all the feedback folks!

FIRESIGN:

Excellent job! I like the way you are progressing with the development of the characters.

Thank you! I feel bad that I haven't read your 'Twilight revisited' but I just cannot stand twilight, so I havent been able to bring myself to read...

I very much appreciate the feedback though, and I promise I will try to overcome my twilight aversion *smile*

wimpy0729

Wow, what an emotional rollercoaster.

It was meant to be...glad it worked.

We go from the wonderful news that Tara is 100% human, to thinking about the dark depths of her abuse and how it is affecting her even now. I like the understanding side of Riley here, and how he got Willow to know she needs to give Tara her space here. I'm anxious to see how our girls work through this

One of the things I do not often see addressed in abuse-related fiction is the seemingly paradoxical reactions that survivors can and do have once they are truly safe. The healing process can be very tangled, and it's important to me to show some of that here.

They'll get through it. Lots of stuff to work through, but they will. Thanks for your input.

leonhart17:

I like that Riley is helping Willow be understanding - but at the same time - I feel that what he's telling Willow not to do is exactly what he did to Buffy in season 5

Exactly. I wanted Riley to be a more rounded character here, and to keep him. Especially with him having been a psych grad student, his behavior in season 5 never made sense to me. And I wanted WIll to have someone who would blast her with the hard truths, and had the experience to have them in the first place. Hence the evolution of Riley, here.

Thanks for the feedback!

Zampsa1975:

I hope Willow really listens Riley's advice and give Tara the space she needs

Willow has her own learning and healing process in this. Stay tuned! Thanks for commenting.

AmberGoddess:

I hope Tara talks to Willow soon, and someone finally makes Riley worth something

She will, relatively soon. And I am working on Riley...Thanks for the input!

abarda:

I have to say: this Riley is likeable. He has been so sweet, helping Tara and all.

I am glad...I want him to be a sympathetic character. I appreciate the feedback!

ScottishAsh:

I am enjoying playing with his character, to try and show Riley as he COULD have been, had he been allowed to be more than an angst device for much of his tenure on the show.

Thanks for reading, and the input!

Glad to see that Tara is not a demon and I can understand why she would want some time alone to get a grip of everything that has happened in her life lately. Maybe now she can focus on living happily ever after with Willow.

It does take time to deal well with massive changes in life. I promise happily ever after, but we aren't there yet...

Thankks for feedback!

Tara stared at the phone.

Can I really do this? Make an appointment, talk to a stranger, about the things that happened?

I have to. I made a promise. But I didn't think I would feel this way. I didn't know how much it would hurt - that it was all lies, all for NOTHING.

How will I ever get the words out? How do you SAY things like that? I have a hard time even thinking of what they did in words. I get...pictures. Feelings. But not words.

The phone and the number to the student counseling center were laying there on her desk, taunting.

Do I even deserve to do this? I mean, it's all in the past, right? It's over. I should be okay now. While it was happening, I went to school, got good grades and kept the house. I should be at least that okay now, right?

But I'm not. I'm so weak. When did I become so pathetic?

The phone remained untouched.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Zeke crouched in a large tree. In wolf form, he was watching the entrance to a series of caves just south of Sunnydale proper.

He had left the ground a good mile away, and climbed from one tree to another until he arrived at his current perch. It was a slow method of approach, but the one best suited to remaining covert. And if the Slayer was right about this Adam, staying hidden was essential to staying alive.

His pack mates, also perched in the forest canopy, were spread out in a long line back to the point where he had taken to the trees. If their guess was right, this was the monster/machine's headquarters, and they would need to get that information out as soon as possible. He would only have to travel a few hundred yards to pass his message, and the others would spread the word while he returned to his post.

He drew his breath in a silent hiss when a vampire wrapped in oilcloth ran under his tree, body smoking despite its covering. When it reached the overhang of the cave entrance, the vamp dropped its portable shade. He recognized the thing from the descriptions of the scoobies: Spike.

Curbing his impatience, he waited.

Several hours later his diligence was rewarded. Spike re-emerged from the cave just as the last rays of the sun were quenched by the horizon. And looming at the vampire's side, speaking, was a hideous patchwork creature. Hybrid of man, monster and machine, the thing sent every atavistic instinct he possessed screaming along his nerve endings. His fur rose of its own accord and stood out from his body.

Trembling with the effort of it, he forced himself to remain still. Biding his time till the vampire and monster finished their conversation, holding fast while Spike swaggered back toward town, gritting his teeth for five full minutes until the undead bloodsucker passed beyond reach of all of his senses.

He unleashed all that pent-up urgency in his silent scramble back to give warning. Warning and a call to the pack. It was time the true Hunt began.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Buffy arrived back in her dorm room, emotionally bruised and tired. She looked around the empty space and sighed. I wish Will were here. I need to get all this confusion out of my head, and she is always good at helping me see more clearly.

A tap at the door broke her chain of thought.

“Riley.”

He stood in the door looking uncertain. “I know you just got back. And maybe you want to be alone. But I thought you'd want to know about Tara...”

“The results came back? And?” Her face was neutral, but her mind was busy. He wouldn't look so concerned if it were good news, would he?

“She's not a demon. But there's some other stuff...” As Buffy seated him on the bed, he began to tell her about Tara's reaction to the news, and his conjectures about her past.

She sat quietly as he spoke about his talk with Willow, and what he knew from his own experience she would be going through. “...and I think she's really gonna need her friends.”

“She'll have us.” Weariness colored her tone. “Do you know where she is?”

“She said something about Giles and some computer thing he needed her to do.” He rose, and brushed his fingertips over her shoulder. “You look tired. I'll let you be.”

He was almost to the door when she called out. “Riley, wait...” He turned. “Look. I am really tired, and Angel spun my head a little. I-I don't really want to talk about it right now, but...could you hold me for a while?”

“I can do that.”

As he settled down beside her and drew her into his arms, he spoke again. “I'm glad you want me to stay.”

They lay in silence for quite some time. Buffy contemplated the situation between Willow and Tara, and what she could do to support them both. Then her thoughts turned to the girl Riley had loved and lost.

“She really changed you a lot, didn't she?”

She felt him stiffen a bit at the question. He was quiet for a moment and then let out a long breath. “Yeah, she did. Turning into a psych major was the least of it. I was raised to think a man was supposed to protect the women in his life from everything, like my dad protected my mom and sisters. But I couldn't protect her, and...I guess it made me grow up a little. Think things through a little more.”

“I'm not gonna pretend I'm not feeling a little nuts about the Angel thing. I'd like to understand, and be supportive, but I'm still a guy. The whole thing with Annie, though, taught me that pushing just makes things worse.” He hugged her a little closer.

Buffy leaned up on an elbow and looked at him. “Riley, I...if you heard that she was in danger, now, would you go to her?”

The burly commando thought for a moment, then answered slowly. “Probably. Even though I know she might not want me there.” He gave a wry smile. “I guess we both still have stuff to learn, huh?”

“I guess so.”

She laid her head back on his shoulder. They just held each other, and were content.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Anya was aggravated, and getting dizzy. She and Xander had returned to his place after delivering the clothes to Spike, and he was still furious that his friends had been talking about him behind his back. Xander's basement wasn't very big, and watching him pace around it, ranting, was much like watching a three-sided tennis match on fast-forward.

Once it was established that he was not going to join the army, she had tried everything she knew to calm him down. She had tried soothing his bruised ego, telling him that she, at least, knew he wasn't a loser. That had triggered more ranting, and she had quickly changed tacks.

Remembering that being agreed with often pleased people, she attempted to join into his diatribe, only to have him turn on her, and defend his friends. Pointing out that she was only repeating his own words had barely averted a fight between the two of them.

He didn't even want orgasms right now. The ex-demon was at her wits' end.

A shout from upstairs that Xander had company was a welcome interruption. When Hunk and Billie appeared at the top of the stairs, she was even more pleased. The wolves liked her, and she liked them. Maybe they could help her get Xander in a better mood.

As soon as the upstairs door closed behind them and Hunk began to speak, though, Anya realized that while Xander would no longer be acting like a crazy man, this was not necessarily a change for the better.

“We found Adam. And that vampire you visited today was there with him.”

It was starting to look like she wouldn't get any orgasms at all today.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Willow was trying to tune Spike out while she worked at her laptop. He had been needling her about Tara, and with the situation as it stood, she had no patience for it. When she hadn't risen to his bait, he started implying that her friends had issues with Tara, and she had quit paying attention to him altogether.

Seemingly undeterred, he had turned his cynical tongue on their host. She had just noticed out of the corner of her eye that Giles was drinking an awful lot, when the door burst open, and three figures hurtled through it.

She whipped her head around to see Oz and Hick pinning Spike to the floor while Doro held a stake hard against his chest. Giles was standing frozen against the entrance to the hall.

“What the bloody hell?” The vampire managed to sound indignant, regardless of his position.

“What's going on?” Willow could hear the shrill note of surprise in her own voice.

Doro was nearly growling as she replied. “This thing is working with Adam. We tracked it here from Adam's lair.”

Giles finally moved, to pick up the phone and dial a number. “Buffy? Come to my flat, as soon as you can. Yes. It's important. They've found Adam.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Tara, shaking, heard the phone ring once, twice, three times.

“Good evening, Student Counseling Services. How may I help you?

“I-I'd like to make a-an a-appointment.”

Aww yay! No Spike messing with the Scoobies heads! I'm glad the wolves caught him!

And I'm glad that Riley wasn't super-possessive guy like on the show concerning Angel... I'm glad he's letting Buffy handle it :)

And big yay for Tara calling the counseling center!

Excellent update!

And Merry Christmas!

Oh, nice twist here once again. I hope they give Spike a good thrashing. Can't wait to see how you handle Adam in this one. I'm so glad to see Tara seeking some professional help here. Again, nicely done.

The next update is in beta, should be up within the next couple of days. Meanwhile...

leonhart17:

I'm glad that Riley wasn't super-possessive guy like on the show concerning Angel...

Yeah, that Riley isn't the one I am writing here. I had considered a confrontation between Angel and Riley, but writing it differently, but realized that *this* Riley would avoid that if at all possible.

wimpy0729:

I hope they give Spike a good thrashing. Can't wait to see how you handle Adam in this one. I'm so glad to see Tara seeking some professional help here. Again, nicely done.

Spike...well, that would be telling. You'll see in the next update. My handling of hte Adam situation will reflect the changed group dynamic...or so I hope. I'll be interested in your opinion of my solution. And as for Tara...timely therapeutic intervention is so important.

And thank you!

taranwillow4ever:

I like how you are moving the story along.

Thanks. A lot of this is, as you know, experimental, learning what works and what does not to move the plot along and regulate dramatic tension. You know I value your input.

FIRESIGN:

My only complaint - I want more!

It's coming, I promise. I have been fighting with these last few chapters, writing and re-writing them, trying to get them just right. Much of that is my learning process...but the next segment should be up soon!

AmberGoddess:

1) I hate Spike.
2) Yes, I said this already, but I like Riley. A lot.
3) Big yay for Tara being brave enough to get help.
4) I love how you integrated the wolves into the plot.
5) Can't wait for more.

1) I am unfond of him as well.
2) I am glad...I like writing him. He's influenced by a couple of my close male friends.
3) She made a promise..and she has a lot to heal for. *smile*
4) Thanks! I was worried that there might be resistance to that...
5) Soon, I promise!

Zampsa1975:

Good that the wolves prevented Spike to mess with Scoobies mind with his tricks... Big yay for Tara finding courage to call to student counseling

I *hated* "the Yoko Factor" a lot. But I needed the Scoobies to find out Adam's plan...So, enter the wolves. Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you all so much for the feedback. It really helps.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Spike had been securely bound while the Scooby gang began to gather. During the bustle, Willow grabbed the phone and took it into the bedroom of the apartment.

With shaking hands, she dialed. She breathed a sigh of relief when, after a few rings, she heard Tara pick up.

“Hello?”

“Tara, it's me.” Willow's voice was low, uncertain.

For a heartbeat, there was no answer, then, “Willow. I-I'm sorry I...” Tara's voice trailed off.

“It's okay. I know you're going through a lot, and I don't want to be all pushy impatient-girl. I just...” She paused to collect her thoughts, trying hard not to babble. “We found out where Adam is, and everybody is coming to Giles' to figure out what to do. I...I know it’s selfish, but I wish...”

Tara cut her off. “Do y-you want me to come over there?”

Relief and hope colored Willow's answer. “Yes. I mean, you don't have to, but I really...I want you here.” For this, for everything.

“If you're sure, I-I'd like to help. I'm on my way.”

“Thank you. I love you.”

There was a hitch in Tara's voice. “I love you too.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It was a full-blown council of war.

Buffy and Riley paced the living room floor as everyone contributed what they knew about the current situation to the general fund of knowledge. It was important to make sure that the expanded Scooby gang understood the situation thoroughly – it looked to be complex enough without miscommunication.

Hick had been sent back to Zeke with one of Riley's military radios. The remaining four werewolves were sitting on the couch that had been pushed back against the stairwell in order to make the central space larger. Their body language clearly indicated a keen desire to be doing rather than planning. Nonetheless, they understood the importance of this session, and were paying close attention.

Willow, Tara and Giles stood in front of the large bookcase, next to a table covered in maps of Sunnydale and the surrounding areas. The two witches had been careful with each other since Tara arrived. They had hugged, and exchanged small touches occasionally, but it was apparent that there was a strain between them. Giles acted as a sort of buffer. With him so close, they could each pretend to themselves that they were holding back to avoid causing him discomfort.

Xander and Anya were, uncharacteristically, seated in separate chairs. Anya had proclaimed loudly, to the barely concealed amusement of the wolves, that if she was not to receive orgasms, she would rather sit alone. Xander had simply blushed, stammered a bit, and sat down. As the explanations progressed, he spent a lot of time glaring at the heavily bound Spike.

Early in the meeting, it had become obvious that the vampire had been actively attempting to sow discord among the Scoobies. As each person recounted what they knew and had seen, Spike shifted in the corner where he had been unceremoniously dumped.

The personal tensions that had been stirred up were by now pretty much disarmed. Under duress, Spike had divulged what he knew; Adam wanted Buffy alone within the Initiative in order to even the kill count when the demons were released from their confinement. The discussion had turned to ways to intervene when Riley's radio/phone began to squawk.

The soldier snatched the device from his belt and held it so everyone could hear.

“A soldier just went into the cave, alone...Zeke's going after him. I'm heading closer to the cave just in case.” Hick's voice sounded tense, even through the small speaker.

A murmur of disquiet ran around the room, the wolves and Riley exhibiting particular distress. Riley pressed a button and spoke into the receiver. “Describe the agent, over.”

“A black guy, about Zeke's size, medium build, twenty-four or so.”

“Forrest.” Riley's voice was grim, but he looked to Doro for instructions to pass onto her packmate.

The slim young woman looked anguished but determined. “Tell him to stay outside and unseen. If the worst should happen...” She paused, swallowed and continued, “we still need to know where Adam is.”

After Riley relayed the instructions, a twitchy silence descended on the group. Riley paced, his jaw bunching and fists flexing. The pack huddled closer together, their shoulders drawn in together, and faces unreadable. The rest of them simply stayed still as possible, hardly daring to breathe.

Finally, the radio crackled again. “This is Zeke. The army guy...I'm sorry...he was dead before I could get to him. That taser rifle...Adam just ate up the blast from it. I'm sorry. It was all I could do to get out without being seen.”

“Acknowledged. Remain covert, and on site. Make contact every 15 minutes” If Riley's face had been a study in apprehension before, now it was a mask of carved granite. His eyes had gone flat at the announcement of Forrest's death.

Riley whirled, and before anyone even registered his intent, he drew a stake from a pocket sewn into his trousers, crossed the room, plunged it into Spike's heart.

“Let's take a break.” Buffy's quiet words, spoken as she moved toward her boyfriend, seemed loud in the silence. Riley, kneeling in the ashes of the undead, buried his face against her torso when she reached him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

After his initial embrace of Buffy, Riley had placed a call to Graham. While they waited for him to arrive, the slayer led Riley upstairs to the bedroom, giving him some privacy to vent his immediate grief.

Giles had immediately busied himself making more tea, as the Scoobies and the pack dealt with the import of the last few minutes. The news of Forrest's death broke down whatever barriers there had been among the gang for the moment; Tara drew Willow into her arms, and Anya had moved immediately into Xander's lap.

The werewolves had intertwined themselves further. Hunk and Doro were touching from shoulder to hip, with Billie in her boyfriend's lap, and Oz wrapping his arms around the diminutive packleader from the other side. The contact seemed to be instinctive, a giving and receiving of comfort through physical touch.

Aside from Oz, the pack was plainly stricken by the sudden appearance of death. While all of them had some acquaintance with the supernatural, and the dangers inherent in what they had chosen to do, for these three, along with Tara and Anya, the sudden demise of someone connected to their self-appointed mission hit them hard. For the first time they faced the depth of the situation.

Oz and the core Scoobies had faced apocalyptic danger and the deaths of those close to them before, but that only made the current situation even more somber for them. Xander, Willow and Oz had none of the common youthful belief in their own immortality. They knew all too well that whatever they decided to do, there was more than a slight chance that some of them would not return to eat doughnuts and savor their victory.

Giles had understood this as long as they had known him; now they were coming to understand him better as they watched their newer compatriots come to terms with what was happening. The Brit watched over them all with the weight of his experiences pressing upon him. He no longer led them, he could not protect them, and his heart ached at the thought of any of these magnificent young people dying under his watch.

The minutes stretched out as they all searched for and found a new resolve. By the time Graham arrived, their fear and shock had abated enough to allow them to think again.

They gathered once more in the living area of the apartment, and planning began in earnest.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

A couple of hours later, they had a strategy. Xander had made a goofy suggestion from a movie, and it had sparked an idea that seemed like it could work. The only problem was that the plan revolved around a meld of Initiative science and Scooby magic.

And Graham didn't believe in magic.

“You've got to be kidding me. We're gonna put our lives on the line with only some hocus-pocus to back us up?” Graham was agitated, tension written in every line of his angular frame.

Riley extended a placating hand to his comrade-in-arms. “I didn't really believe in it either, Graham, until, I saw it with my own two eyes. But it really does work. And if these two” He nodded at Willow and Tara, “say they can do this, then I'll take their word for it.”

Graham folded his arms across his chest. “I've never seen anything to make me believe what you're trying to sell me here, Finn.”

“I-If we showed you some m-magic, w-would you reconsider?” Tara's hesitant voice seemed to cut the tension considerably. Willow smiled at her girlfriend and turned to await an answer.

Almost defiantly, Graham nodded.

Tara reached out her hand to take Willow's, the two of them slipping easily into the rapport necessary for casting together. They communicated all they needed to with a shared gaze and a quirk of a smile. This demonstration would not be about finesse – someone like Graham would respect a show of power over precision any day of the week.

They held the gaze between themselves for a long beat, then both their heads snapped to the side, their eyes focused instantly on Graham.

He uttered a startled oath as his radio and every weapon he carried were suddenly yanked from their places in his uniform and landed in a neat pile on the table near the witches. The oath ended in a croaking gasp as he began to rise, arms and legs held rigid, until he hovered some three feet above the floor.

Willow spoke calmly to him. “This is one of things we can do without preparation; no ritual or spell ingredients. What we plan to do is not that different, just requires more power. So then we'll be in trance, and you know the rest of the preparations we've talked about.” She searched his face before nodding, and squeezing Tara's hand.

Graham's face was troubled as he came to rest on the floor once more. He shifted a few times, as though to test the solidity of his contact with the earth, and turned to his friend.

“I'm in.”

With that, the group broke up into smaller units, each concentrating on refining different parts of the concept they had adopted.

A while later, Oz and Willow were going over some equations that looked like ancient Sumerian to most of the others. They had just begun to quibble over a particular value assignment when the military radios came to life.

“This is Zeke. That thing has left the caves...he's heading in the general direction of the campus, and he's carrying the guy that went in earlier. I've got Hick following him, and I'm following Hick. We're trying to stay covert. I'll get back to you when we see where he's going.”

Buffy's grim tone cut the babble that followed Zeke's announcement. “The Initiative. It has to be where he's headed. Adam must have decided to go ahead down there and wait for me.” She turned to Riley and Graham.

“You two better go ahead and get back. He won't start without me, so figure twenty-four hours until I show up. Will that be enough time to get things ready?”

“If we can't do it in a day, we can't do it at all.” Riley stepped forward and cupped his girlfriend's cheek in his palm. “But I think we'll get it done.”

“Good.” She looked around the room, lingering on each determined face. “None of us could do this alone. But all of us together can. Let's all get some rest, and make sure we've got everything we need. We'll meet this time tomorrow outside Lowell House.” Her eyes swept the room once more. “Any questions? Comments?”

Shaking heads and negative murmurs answered her, and she gave a predatory smile to them all.

“Good. Tomorrow we take Adam down.”

Great update! But I didn't like Spike's being staked. I like him.
Well, I just hope that everything will be okay in the end.

Hi there. I'm still enjoying the twists you're putting in this wonderful story, but honestly, I'm a bit torn about Spike being dusted. Yes, he was evil for the most part, but he also did a lot of good and made me like him on the show. He also added a lot of humor, which I enjoyed. But this is your story, so you can do as you please. Plus, we all knew how bad Riley really did want to dust his butt anyway. So please, continue with this soon so we can see how this all turns out. I'm very anxious to see how they take care of Adam.

I think I'm about 2 updates behind, but wanted to drop in and tell you how much I'm enjoying your story. I've enjoyed the branch off from canon including Buffy 'outing' Tara and in a friendly way, pushing them to realize their feelings for one another.

Love the reintroduction of Oz and the way you've done it. He was such a great character and I love how you've kept him in the Scooby fold and provided a very realistic relationship closure.

The other character I've enjoyed reading is Riley. He was always sort of a take him or leave him character for me, so I like that you've made him more dynamic. Transitioning his thought process from dutiful soldier to active Scooby was very well done. It would certainly be a struggle for him and I like that you didn't gloss over that. His one on one talk with Willow also showed that there's a lot more going on beneath the surface.

Hopefully I'll have a chance to finish catching up soon. Thanks for posting!

Postby Morrigan » Sun Jan 03, 2010 3:33 pm

My dad has been here this past week, so the next update is not yet finished, but I wanted to give some attention to those who have been kind enough to leave feedback.

I want to address the Spike issue before I get to replies. I did not actually plan the dusting of Spike. The original plot outline called for him being run out of town, but not killed. But while I was writing the scene, the character of Riley kind of mutinied on me.

I realized as I was writing that Riley could not possibly stand in a room, after hearing of the death of his friend, with the minion of his friend's murderer ,and NOT retaliate in kind. Add in that in Riley's mind, a vamp is a demon, chipped or not, and we have the story as it unfolded.

To Spike fans, I'll tender an apology. But I had to remain true to the characters I am writing, as hubristic as that may sound

leonhart17:

This fight with Adam will be very different from canon..I do hope you will enjoy it!

Zampsa1975:

I hope the plan works... I hope Spike's staking doesn't cause future problems for Scoobies...

We will see if the plan works, soon. As for the staking, it will likely cause some problems in the future. As I am diverting from canon, however, what exact problems that causes remain to be seen. Stay tuned!

abarda:

Great update! But I didn't like Spike's being staked. I like him.

Thanks for the honesty. As I said above, I had not planned for it, but it fit the characters I am writing. I hope the rest of the story makes up for that a bit.

FIRESIGN:

Interesting twist - can't wait to see where you're taking this!

I am all about the twists, it seems *grin*

wimpy0729:

Quite honestly, I was torn too. While I disliked much of the Spike storyline, I did really enjoy the redemption thing he had going on in later seasons, when he edged further into the grey area between being evil and caring for the scoobies. And he was good comic relief, at times.

I ended up having to make the decision whether to please the readers (I knew his dusting would upset many) or to remain true to the characters i am writing. I am honestly not sure whether I made the right decision, as this IS my first foray into writing fiction. But then again, that's what first stories really are about, learning what works and what doesn't.

So please, continue with this soon so we can see how this all turns out. I'm very anxious to see how they take care of Adam.

I am nearly finished with the next update...then it goes to beta, then posted after revisions. I do very much appreciate the honest feedback. As much as I adore the ego-feeding kudos, I learn a lot from hearing what people do NOT like as well.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment at all! I am quite a fan of your work. I wanted to show the scoobies who acted more like close friends than simply comrades in arms.

Love the reintroduction of Oz and the way you've done it. He was such a great character and I love how you've kept him in the Scooby fold and provided a very realistic relationship closure.

Thanks. I love him as a character. I also like the idea of providing more strong male characters. A s much as i love the theme of strong women on the show, I think it is just as important to show strong, good MEN as well.

That means a lot to me. I am ex-military myself, and there are large differences between the thought patterns instilled into active-duty soldiers and civilians. I wanted Ri to be able to grow past knee-jerk obedience, and into a fuller potential as a full partner for Buffy. It also always bothered me that he seemed rather shallow for a psych major..

Hopefully I'll have a chance to finish catching up soon. Thanks for posting!

Thankyou for reading, and for the feedback!

This is very interesting. Some nice twists were done, and turn out well so far. You even manage to make me not get all "blaaaah Riley *shudders*". If you make me like him, then wow! ^^

Let's hope therapy will help Tara, and that she opens up to Willow.

Keep up the good work. :)

Thanks...Riley, in the show, was boring and then just problematic. I wanted to make him more likeable...glad you like!

The tension between them is not at all about a lack of love...just tension because of inner turmoil. And dealing with Adam can clear the way for them to focus back on themselves, and their relationship for a while

Thanks again to everyone for the feedback!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The control room in the Initiative was stark and white, its angular brightness broken only by the backlit world map on one wall. Graham was seated at the control console, a headpiece with an earphone and microphone fitted over his closely cropped hair.

As Riley moved up to stand next to him, he gave a forced chuckle. “I never thought being benched for a while would be a good thing.”

“Ironic. I am learning that when it comes to dealing with HST's and slayers, there is a lot of irony to go around.” Riley's voice was wry, sardonic even.

“Yeah.” Graham's fingers flew over the keyboard, for a moment, changing the views of the take from the surveillance cameras until he could see the corridors approaching the room they were in. “Okay...you have at least two minutes.”

There was no reply, as the larger man was already under the next console station, pulling off an access panel. With a grunt, Riley began to strip one particular wire in two different places, attaching an odd-looking to device to both bare spots with alligator clips. He attached a multimeter, took a deep breath and clipped the wire he had stripped halfway between the places where the two devices were attached. When no alarms or sirens went off, Riley quickly disconnected the meter, and closed the panel.

Standing, he handed what looked like the control for a garage door opener to his friend. “I have one of these, and so do you. When the power goes down, hit the top button.”

Graham looked at him. “Both of us doing it won't turn the circuit back on?”

“No. That's the second button. And it shouldn't matter. According to the design specs, we only need to break the circuit for a second or so.” He sighed. “I've shifted the duty rosters for the rest of the day, signed out weapons to your squad and Forrest's old one. We're just about ready.”

Riley clapped his friend on the shoulder as he walked toward the door.

“Hey.”

He turned.

“Good luck. I hope we know what we're doing here.”

“Me too.” With that, Riley turned and headed off to finish his preparations.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Scoobies and the wolves met on the large grassy lawn out in front of Lowell house. All were doing their level best to seem as nonchalant and unobtrusive as possible.

Buffy smiled in turn at each of them as they arrived. “Everybody clear on the plan?”

“Got it.” Doro was obviously speaking for the rest of the pack.

The full humans all just nodded. They all had calm expressions, belying the anxiety that was thick in the air.

“Then it's time. You guys should get to the backdoor about the time I make it in. Make sure you are inside within 15 minutes.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Graham was waiting for Buffy just inside the door to Lowell house. She met his worried eyes, trying to project a confidence she did not entirely feel. What was it Riley said? When in command, appearance is everything. I can let the gang see me scared – but these guys will only see a weak little girl if they see the same thing.

“Everything ready?” She was surprised that her voice sounded calm and even.

Graham grimaced as he answered. “Yeah. Except Riley disappeared a few hours ago.” He held up a hand to forestall her questions until he finished. “He headed into 314, and didn't come out. One of the other team leaders went in looking for him, but nobody was there.”

Buffy just stood for a moment, her mind racing. “Dammit, Adam's got him. The secret lab must be behind the 314 area, and somehow, Adam got him when he went in there.” Her breath hitched, and she firmly shut her fear for her boyfriend behind a solid wall in her mind. I have to focus on the mission. He would understand better than anyone.

Searching her face, the chiseled soldier asked, “What do you want to do?”

“Nothing changes. Except we keep an eye out for him when we go into the lab. He...he would say the same.”

“I know.” Reaching out, Graham squeezed her shoulder before turning and leading her to the mirror-covered elevator. “Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell...”

“Poetry, Graham?” Buffy's lips quirked as she tried to remember where she had heard the lines before.

A sheepish look crossed his face as he faced the mirror and hit the buttons activating the retinal scan. “English major, before I joined the army. And Tennyson really nailed this kind of thing.”

The elevator door opened and they stepped inside.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Willow grumbled under her breath as the group made their way through the sparse woods to one of the back doors of the Initiative. “Stupid woods. I wasn't expecting a cross-country hike.”

“Y-you don't like the forest?” Tara's voice was low and breathy. She moved fluidly through the underbrush, sliding past branches that seemed to reach for and cling to Willow.

“I like it most of the time. I just don't really think it likes me.” The redhead yanked what seemed like the hundredth thorny vine from her pants. “Or maybe it likes me too much - wants to keep me in one place so some bear can eat me or something.”

Tara reached back and drew Willow onto a small game trail she had been following. “It's not a-allowed to keep you. I'll protect y-you from bears.”

A beaming smile lit the hacker's face at those words. It didn't last long.

All of the Scoobies gasped and recoiled when a hairy form dropped out of the trees next to Doro. When none of the werewolves reacted, Willow realized that the interloper was Zeke in his wolf form. A moment of growled communication to Doro precipitated movement - all the wolves except Oz began to strip off their clothes immediately.

As the purely human members of the team (except for a fascinated Anya) tried to find some safe place to rest their eyes, the crackles and pops of the Changes began to fill the air around them. Within a few moments, four more shaggy bodies rose from the leaf-littered ground to take up perimeter positions around the group.

Oz spoke quietly. “There are some demons out here guarding the door. The pack can take them. Just stay close to me, and try to be as quiet as you can.” He moved off, following his pack, trusting the Scoobies to follow his lead.

Tara's hand crept into Willow's and held tightly as they started after the others.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Buffy left Graham behind after the elevator opened. Moving as quickly as she could without being conspicuous, she headed directly for 314.

Her hope of reaching the labs unimpeded was dashed when she got closer There was an armed guard exactly where she needed to go, and as she slowed to give herself time to think, she heard movement behind her.

“Where, exactly, do you think you're going?”

The slayer turned slowly to see the colonel in charge of the Initiative's military complement glaring at her. Six soldiers flanked him, their weapons trained steadily at her. She slowly raised her hands, palms outward, to shoulder level.

Before she could speak, Graham's voice cut through the charged silence. “Colonel – Sir, you're needed in the Ops center.”

The senior officer looked torn for a moment, then gestured to the squad with him. “Bring her along. And watch her closely – you've all seen how she can fight.”

A minor chorus of “Yes, Sir's” later, Buffy was being pushed along a white-walled corridor. She turned her head to the side, and the soldier that had a firm hold on her arm gave her a slow wink.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The fight between the werewolves and the demons had been bloody.

The Scoobies hadn't seen much of it; as soon as the sounds of battle had filtered to them through the trees, Oz had stopped them and gestured for Xander, Anya and Giles to position themselves on either side of the witches. The three men and ex-demon had faced outward, crossbows at the ready for anything that might get past the pack.

Willow had tried to protest her protected position, only to be stopped by an angry snort from Xander.

“Will, you and Tara are the really important ones here. We lose you, we LOSE.” Her old friend's words had stung, though they made sense. The thought of anyone getting hurt protecting her made her cringe.

Once again, Tara had comforted her without needing to say anything. Her hand had tightened its grasp, communicating support through touch and the beginning traces of the rapport they would soon build between them.

Several tense minutes had passed before Oz had relaxed at a low, growling bark from up ahead. As he led them forward again, they began to see the carcasses of demons scattered about the small clearing they entered into.

Two of the werewolves were wounded, cuts on their flanks and chests slowly weeping blood. They shook away all attempts to aid them,;, charging forward to a door that was now visible behind some trampled brush at the far end of the little glade.

The group reached it just in time. As they pulled open the heavy steel portal, three thick deadbolts shot outward from the edges. Had the fight lasted a moment longer, they would have been locked out of the Initiative. And Buffy needed them inside.

They stood silently for a moment, looking around at each other. It was Xander who finally sighed and stepped down into the dark corridor and led them all inside.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The colonel led the soldiers and Buffy into the sterile control room.

“What is it, Willis?”

“Sir, something or someone is changing the surveillance subroutines. The cameras have changed to a different scanning pattern, and the infrared and heat sensors have gone offline.” The soldier seated at the computer console was nervous, pointing out the changes to his commanding officer. “We've been either infiltrated or hacked, Sir.”

“It's Adam.” Buffy stepped forward from the group of commandos surrounding her, and faced the colonel squarely. “He's pulling a Trojan horse on you – all those demons you've captured recently are just waiting for him to open the doors so they can come after you.”

As if in response to her words, the lights went down, and it took a moment for auxiliary lights to come up. The colonel sputtered for a few breaths before collecting himself. He turned to glare at Buffy.

“Or it could be that you are at the bottom of this.” The tall commander collected the squad with his eyes. “We need to take the armory, now.” Turning to Graham, he spoke harshly. “This woman is under arrest. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Sir.” Graham waited while the colonel and his team left the ops center. Once they were gone, he grinned at the young man at the console. “Great job, Willis. You trace the incoming signal?”

“Yeah. Whatever it is, it's behind 314 somewhere. Looks like the gas canisters have been released in the containment areas, but I can't get a visual on them from here. I hope the guys there got out in time.” Willis' face was serious, his eyes flickering back and forth between Buffy and Graham. “You be careful back there. Alpha and Gamma squads are armed and waiting for you in the lab complex.”

Graham clapped him on the shoulder as he turned to lead Buffy back out of the control center.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Scoobies and the pack moved as silently as they could through the damp tunnel. After the first few steps, the wolves again moved forward to lead and scout ahead.

After a few minutes, although it seemed much longer, the lead figures waved back at the rest for silence and stillness. Two of them crept forward and disappeared around a corner.

Those left behind hardly dared to breathe. They shifted closer to one another, as if by physical proximity they could keep themselves and each other safe.

A seeming eternity of nervous tension later, the two scouts reappeared and beckoned them onward, gesturing for quiet. As the group reached the bend, one of the two leaders laid his hand/paw over Willow's mouth, and shifted her forward so she could see around the corner.

When she saw what lay beyond, Willow was grateful for the hand stifling her gasp. Riley was seated in an odd-looking chair, with three monstrously altered humans clustered around him, and a look of helpless fury on his face.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Buffy, Graham and the double squad they had found waiting for them were moving swiftly through the corridors behind 314. It had taken them only a few minutes to find the entrance. With ten people tapping and probing at the walls of the once-secret lab, the hidden doors had come to light quickly, and the soldiers fell easily into formation behind Buffy as she passed through them.

They were armed with a variety of weapons; some of the soldiers carried automatic rifles, fresh magazines ready in their belt pouches. The others carried so-called 'taser rifles' that were common on demon patrols. They were actually electrolasers, much more powerful than the conventional taser. The electrolaser, rather than send its current down a wire, used so much voltage that it actually created a plasma conduit through the air to carry its current, so it would deliver much more energy to the target.

These electrolasers were essential to what Buffy had planned for Adam – she would give him what he wanted, and make him choke on it.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Willow and Tara were beginning their descent into a light trance. They would not go into the full rapport until Buffy made her appearance, but it was essential to begin establishing the links they needed now.

They started by controlling their breathing, putting from their minds the fear for themselves, and the horror of Riley being in the hands of their enemies. Gradually, their hearts began to beat in sync, their minds meshing just enough to link, but remain conscious of their surroundings and able to act.

Simultaneously, they each reached back to take Xander's hands. To the surprise of everyone, especially himself, the goofy young man had proved best suited to channeling the energy of the rest of the group to the witches. Gathered just behind him were Giles, Anya and Oz, each with one hand pressed to Xander's back, all of them reaching deep within themselves to send whatever energy they could into the spell to come.

It might have surprised an outsider, how easily these disparate people were able to give themselves to this effort, but to the werewolves watching them, it seemed more natural than breath. The supernal senses of the changed pack heard six hearts pump in unity, six pairs of lungs inhale in concert, and could nearly feel the power of those six minds focusing together on one shared goal. It did not matter that only two of those minds truly understood the physics of what they were to do, that only one could actually see the forces they meant to shape to their ends. It mattered only that each was willing to give everything to the others, in this moment.

The wolves understood – this too, was a pack, just one made for a different purpose than their own. The power being raised so close to them stirred their fur, like static electricity. They stayed alert, watching for the moment to lead the spell-workers into view of their objective.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When the moment came, it seemed dreamlike and surreal to Willow. Everything seemed to happen at once. She heard Adam, roaring his displeasure, stalk into the room where Riley was being held. She opened her eyes as she felt herself being gently herded around the corner, and saw Buffy and a group of commandos burst into the same room from yet another doorway. The wolves leaped forward to interpose their bodies between the linked spell-group and any possible threat. And she saw the demon hybrid that had once been Forrest launch himself at his former comrades.

The moment Tara opened her eyes was unmistakable. Linked as they were, Willow shared her girlfriend's ability to see energy patterns, and her vision suddenly changed, the solid forms of people and lab equipment overlaid by a misty kaleidoscope of color. Buffy stood out like a beacon amid the duller colors of the humans surrounding her, and Willow felt a surge of love and admiration for the slender warrior who now depended upon her for so much.

It seemed Buffy felt it too - at that instant, she locked eyes with Willow, smiled, and threw herself to the side of the group she led, shouting “Now! Fire!”

The soldiers reacted instantly. Those with machine guns engaged Forrest and the two white coated monstrosities that had once been doctors. The rest, turned their electrolasers toward Adam, and opened fire.

The demon-cyborg laughed as the first tendrils of electricity hit his body, soaking up the energy like mothers milk. Adam never had the chance to understand what happened after that – it was all too fast.

Upon hearing Buffy's words, Willow had closed her eyes, focusing only on the energy patterns Tara saw. She pulled hard at the power that had been pooling in Xander these last minutes, and began to construct a tube of pure magic in front of Adam.

As soon as the electrolasers began to fire, she tightened that tube around the magnetic field being created by the strong flow of electricity. She pulled more power from her partner and friends, and bore down harder, compressing the magnetic field as tightly and small as the combined power of the Scoobies would let her. For Willow, it was an endless second, holding as tightly and as long as she could, straining to create the largest magnetic flux possible when she let go.

She succeeded. When she felt the last reserves of magic being spent, she released the spell with a hoarse shout, allowing the electrical and magnetic fields to flux wildly back to their natural forms – and destroying every electronic circuit in the room.

The results of the magically created EMP weapon were just on the survivable side of catastrophic.

The taser rifles themselves simply melted, the soldiers throwing them down with startled oaths. Lights popped and shattered around them, lab equipment following in bursts of cascading sparks. Riley clutched his chest with a yelp, and the reanimated doctors simply dropped where they stood. Forrest, already having absorbed quite a few bullets, collapsed as well.

The energy explosion had, however, served its purpose. Adam began to come apart at the seams.

Most of the visible metal in his body glowed white-hot for a moment, before he too, began to emit small streams of sparks. Tendrils of energy swathed his right arm, and crawled around his chest and head. His mouth opened in a primeval scream of agony, filling the darkened lab with tortured sound, until Buffy buried her hand in his torso, and pulled back hard, yanking his power source out of him entirely.

The soft green glow of the uranium core was the only light as Willow and Tara passed out.

Whoa... that is so cool. I like it better than the other way, Tara gets to help, and there's no yicky chest-gouging from Riley (I mean really, was there a point beyond squidge factor there?) I hope Willow and Tara are okay, and that they get over the uncomfortableness soon. More soon please!

I hope Riley lives to fight another day. Maybe now that the fight with Adam is over Willow and Tara can focus more on their relationship. Hopefully Tara will open up to Willow about what exactly happened in her past.
