Summary- Basically Willow and Tara are in high school and are both 16. Willow meets Tara in an unexpected place and they help each other discover more about each other whilst dealing with the normal angst and learning that comes with high school.
Chapter 10
Willow and Tara made their way nervously over to the table and sat next to each other, while Buffy sat opposite them. After a few minutes of awkward silence Buffy said “OK guys I’m not quite sure how to tell you this and you probably won’t believe me but …”
“Wait Buffy are you sure you want to get them involved in this,” Giles said interrupting.
“Giles there is nothing that I want more than to leave them out of this but I want them to know how to protect themselves cause I can’t be around to protect them all the time and I know that I can trust them with this,” Buffy replied.
“Ok, but it is against my better judgement,” Giles said worriedly, taking off his glasses and wiping them.
“OK would someone mind not acting like we aren’t even here and telling us what in the frilly heck is going on,” Willow said getting a little frustrated.
“Sorry Will first of all you both have to promise that what I am about to tell you will be kept secret,” Buffy said
“Well sure, I guess so, I mean now that I know that there's something to know, I can't not know, just because I'm afraid somebody will know I know, you know?” Willow babbled
“I think what she means to say is that yes we will keep it a secret,” Tara said smiling adorably at Willow.
“Ok well……. you know all these ‘unconfirmed reports’ of severe trauma to the throats of deceased individuals that have been circumventing the news for I don’t know how long? Well you see the cause of their death is actually due to them being killed by um …well by…. vampires,” Buffy said finishing quietly.
“Vampires? Come on Buffy I know that you can do a lot better than that, I mean your not even trying to lie convincingly with that” Willow said.
“Buffy is telling the truth Willow, this world is older than any of you know. Contrary to popular mythology, it did not begin as a paradise. For untold eons demons walked the Earth. They made it their home, their... their Hell. But in time they lost their purchase on this reality. The way was made for mortal animals, for, for man. All that remains of the old ones are vestiges, certain magicks, certain creatures...” Giles lectured.
“And vampires” Buffy said interrupting.
“Yes and vampires. The books tell that the last demon to leave this reality fed off a human, mixed their blood. He was a human form possessed, infected by the demon's soul. He bit another, and another, and so they walk the Earth, feeding... Killing some, mixing their blood with others to make more of their kind. Waiting for the animals to die out, and the old ones to return” Giles continued.
There was a pause before Willow started giggling nervously and said “So yeah I’m kinda waiting for the part where you tell me that this is all a joke and we all go on our merry ways, right?”.
“I wish I could Willow but it is all true unfortunately,” Giles said.
“Okay starting to get a little freaked out now cause I know that Mr Giles would never lie and would never actually tell a joke. And now thinking about it, there have been a lot of reports of people dying from severe trauma to the throat. And all of my classes seem to be getting smaller. Oh God you’re not joking are you? Vampires are real. Vampires are real? Oh boy I’d better sit down,” Willow babbled.
“Will, you are kinda sitting down,” Tara said taking Willow’s hand in her own and stroking it back and forth.
“Oh, well yay for me,” Willow said distantly.
“U-um B-Buffy I hope you d-don’t mind me asking you this b-but what do you h-have to do with all o-of this?” Tara questioned.
“Well you see I’m kind of the slayer,” Buffy said and was about to explain what a slayer was before Tara interrupted.
“I thought that you were after your conversation with Mr Giles. I think one of my books mentions a slayer, something like into each generation a Slayer is born, one girl in all the world, a Chosen One, one born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires, to stop the spread of their evil,” Tara exclaimed.
“How…how with the who and the what?” Buffy asked surprised.
“Oh well I guess there is something that I need to tell you all as well,” Tara said hesitantly whilst looking down at her hands, “You see I am a witch, a-a good w-witch, I kinda practice magics, b-but only white of course, so therefore I have already read up a lot on mystical forces and demons. That’s why I know about you Buffy, well what your role is anyway”
“Wow and I mean just wow, isn’t that wow Giles,” Buffy said
“Yes I must certainly say that this is an interesting development, if you wouldn’t mind Tara one day you might sit with me and go through what you know and your skills?” Giles asked interested
“Oh sure Mr Giles anytime. Are…. Are you OK there Will?” Tara said looking at Willow as she saw her turn white.
“Me? Why of course I’m fine. I just found out that my best friend slays vampires and my girlfriend is a witch. Why wouldn’t I be fine. Especially now knowing that every time I went out at night I could have been eaten and killed by vampires. Does anyone mind if I pass out?” Willow said getting more hysterical as she went on.
“Will, Breath,” Buffy said
“Breath” Willow said taking a big deep breath.
“Yes breath” Buffy repeated.
“Ok, I’m fine, just a lot to process you know and I’m kinda feeling out of the loopy here so just give me a second to collect my thoughts,” Willow said.
“Sure Will, Tara do you have any other things that you would like to ask?” Buffy questioned
“Um j-just one more thing, Mr Giles correct me if I am wrong but are you Buffy’s watcher?” Tara asked
“Yes, it is fascinating how much you already know, I mean I try to get Buffy to read up on mythologies and such but it is like trying to draw blood out of a stone,” Giles said.
“Hey! I’m not the bad. Plus that’s your job anyway. You’re stuffy guy and I’m action gal, it is a very good working system which I don’t think needs changing” Buffy said.
“Um what’s a watcher?” Willow said feeling a little silly.
“Oh, their job is just to watch you as you get beaten to death by some beastie,” Buffy said.
“Buffy that is not true and you know it. As I reminded Buffy before my duties are to guide the slayer and to provide her with the necessary training required to defeat demons,” Giles said.
“OK this might be a dumb question but can’t we let the police deal with this?” Willow asked
“Oh yes and they would believe us of course” Giles said sarcastically.
“Well, we don't have to say vampires. We, we could just say that there's a, a bad man” Willow said
“They couldn't handle it even of they did show up. They'd only come with guns” Buffy contradicted.
Willow was in deep thought for a moment before asking, “How long have you been doing this Buffy?”
“Um only for a few months,” Buffy replied.
“And you didn’t tell me, why didn’t you tell me?” Willow questioned
“I just didn’t know how you would react Will and it’s not something you just blurt out amongst talking about new hairstyles and the quality of the lunch menu,” Buffy said.
“I still think that you could have told me. I mean do you think it was easy for me to tell you that I was gay and seeing Tara? Cause it wasn’t but I still told you cause you are my best friend and best friends don’t hide stuff like this from each other,” Willow said, getting angrier the more she thought about it.
“Will, sweetie I think you need to calm down a little,” Tara said worriedly.
“Don’t Tara you are in the exact same category as Buffy at the moment, I just …. God I don’t know how to deal with this. Look I’m gonna head off and clear my head or something, I just can’t be here right now,” Willow said.
With that Willow got up from the table and was about to head for the door, when she felt an urgent pull on her arm spinning her around to face Tara.
“Please Willow I didn’t mean to hurt you, I just didn’t know how to tell you,” Tara said tears forming in her eyes.
Willow quickly yanked her arm away and avoided looking into Tara’s tearful eyes as it made everything so much harder.
“Just please don’t Tara, I am so confused at the moment. I don’t know who or what to believe. I need some time to think this through, alone, and that means I can’t be near you at the moment,” Willow said and with that she headed out the doors leaving a stunned and shaking Tara behind.
“Should I go after her?,” Tara said, more a question to herself as she was not sure what the best course of action was.
“No, just give her time Tara, this is a lot for her to deal with. You know how that mind of hers works. She’s just scared and worried and she hates uncertainty. She just needs time to process everything, then she’ll be fine,” Buffy said
“I hope so,” Tara said still staring at the door.
“Now Buffy, should we get into a spot of training before you head home so that your mother does not worry. And what time will you be sneaking out tonight so that I can meet up with you?” Giles asked.
“Jeez aren’t you the role model of the century. I will be sneaking out at around 8 so I’ll meet you at the Bronze within half an hour to an hour of that, depending on how many vampires attack me along the way. Okay?” Buffy said.
“Sure that sounds fine, shall we then?” Giles said gesturing towards the weapons.
“We shall,” Buffy said
“Ah guys, look I think I am going to head off now cause I was supposed to catch the bus….oh god an hour ago now. I have to be off. Thank you for sharing that with me Buffy,” Tara said.
“No thank you for being so understanding. Are you right to get to the bus by yourself?” Buffy asked
“Yeah I’ll be fine, I will see you tomorrow,” Tara said
“Yeah see ya” Buffy replied before Tara made her exit

A part of Tara was hoping that Willow would be standing outside the doors waiting for her, but a larger part knew that she definitely wasn’t. She didn’t know what to make of Willow’s exit. She hoped that Buffy was right and all that Willow did need was some time to think. And everything was going so well, Tara thought sighing, what with the smoochies and everything. God Willow I am falling for you so quickly, please don’t leave it like this. And that was the last thought that Tara had before she felt someone walk up behind her. She had no time to react before a damp cloth was place against her mouth and her world turned black.

It was near the end of 1st period and Willow was idly staring at her computer screen. She had arrived just in time for the first bell so as to avoid seeing Buffy or Tara that morning. She was still completely confused about how she felt about what they had both confided in her yesterday and therefore she still didn’t feel comfortable enough to face them. As she randomly added bits and pieces to the program that she was working on she overheard Harmony and Rick talking.
“So how was the Bronze last night, was it like totally kickin’” Rick asked
“Yeah it was fun as usual but you wouldn’t believe what happened when I was coming out of the bathroom, Buffy the freakazoid comes running at me. Screaming! With a stick! 'I'm gonna kill you! I'm gonna kill you!,” Harmony said.
“Woah! Really?” Rick said
“I swear,” Harmony said, “I mean I know that all the girls envy me because of how popular I am but I mean that is just going to the extreme,”.
“Wow that is totally trippin’, I wonder what set her off,” Rick said
“Ah probably the fact that she if like a complete wacko,” Harmony replied.
“No she’s not,” Willow said sticking up for her friend.
“Excuse me what did you say,” Harmony said giving Willow a death glare.
“I said she is not a wacko, you don’t even know her,” Willow said meeting her glare.
“Excuse me? Who gave you permission to exist?” Harmony nastily asked
Willow says nothing to this and just looks down into her lap.
“Do I horn in on your private discussions? No. Why? Because you're boring” Harmony continued
Willow still did not retaliate but rose from her chair and headed over to the printer to get her printouts.
“Okay, I think the program's is like totally done now” Rick says
Taking her deathly gaze away from Willow, Harmony exclaims “Finally the nightmare ends! Okay, so how do we save it?”
“Deliver,” Willow simply states heading out the door as she hears the bell goes.
“Deliver? Where's that?” Harmony says searching the keyboard.
“Oh!” She exclaims thinking that she has found it. As she hits the "Del" key, she looks up and sees her program disappear. She stares at the screen in shock and horror.
Willow walked down the corridor with an evil smile on her face. She was now heading to the library hoping to catch up with either Tara or Buffy. After defending her best friend in class she realised that it didn’t matter what the two girls got themselves into, she would always be there for them cause they were the closest thing to a family that she had. Plus they were saving people’s lives which she obviously couldn’t stay mad at them forever for.
As she made her way through the library doors she was glad to see that Buffy and Giles were sitting at the table. Her happiness quickly faded as she got closer though as she noticed how badly bruised and worn out Buffy was.
“Buffy, what happened?” Willow nearly shrieked.
“Willow! What are you doing here?” Buffy said in surprise.
“I came to say that you will always be my best friend and nothing can change that. But god look at you Buffy you’re all hurt, what happened last night?” Willow asked worriedly.
“Will, I think that you had better sit down before I tell you this,” Buffy said
“Okaaay,” Willow said hesitantly not knowing how many more surprises she could handle from her best friend.
“Last night when I was on patrol I was attacked by a really large vampire. He was really strong. Anyways I managed to beat him off before he almost killed me. I heard a scream and went out of the crypt that I had been fighting the large vampire in, leaving him unconscious against a wall. I fought off a couple more vampires until one said that they had a message for me. Will, the message was is that they have Tara and they will keep her alive as long as the slayer is no where near the Bronze tonight. I’m sorry Will,” Buffy exclaimed
“Tara,” Willow whispered “Oh god Tara! What are you doing here then? Why aren’t you going to rescue her. Isn’t that what you do? You know what forget you, I will find her myself and I will kill them all if they have done anything to her,”
“No Willow you can’t Tara is my responsibility, you would last about 5 seconds with them. They are a group of vampires. Plus we don’t even know where they have her,” Buffy said
Willow sat back defeated until Giles asked “Did you here a car take off or anything last night?”.
“No I’m pretty sure I didn’t,” Buffy said.
“Well then let’s take an intuitive guess and say that they have gone underground,” Giles said.
“Vampires really jam on sewer systems. You can get anywhere in the entire town without catching any rays. But I didn't see any access around there” Buffy said
“Well, there's an electrical tunnel that runs under the whole town” Willow offered
“If we had a diagnostic of the tunnel system it might indicate a meeting place, it would, uh... I suppose we could go to the building commission” Giles said
“We SO don't have time” Buffy exclaimed
“Uh, guys? There may be another way” Willow said

“Aah the pretty girl awakens,” Tara heard an eerie voice exclaim as she slowly opened her eyes and lifted her head from the ground.
A scream escaped from her mouth as she looked up to see a figure that was obviously that of a vampire but more distorted then any of the vampires she had seen drawn in books.
“After all these years master you still know how to get a girl’s heart racing” she heard a feminine voice say from behind her.
She then felt strong hands lift her from the ground and force her to continue facing the demon.
“What do you want done with her master?” she heard the voice speak again.
“Put her in one of the chambers and Darla no more snacking,” the Master said
As he said this Tara bought her hand up to neck and realised for the first time that she was bleeding.
“Oh please master she tastes so good,” Darla pleaded
“NO! Now do as I say,” the Master barked at Darla
Tara finally found her voice and asked, “Are y-you going to k-kill me?”
“Not at the moment, for now you are merely bait,” the Master said with an evil grin.
That was the last that was said before Darla dragged her to one of the chambers.
