Dragons really don't think like that. They're kinda always in "the moment" mode. It's a defense mechanism. If they had to think about the dangers of fighting thread or dwell on the memory of the pain of threadscore, they wouldn't be as effective as they are. They leave that sort of thing to their human counterparts, again which is why the symbiosis between the two species works so well at defending an indefensible foe.

So, while I don't presume to know what our illustrious host will do, I don't see the two dragons conspiring with each other to get our two heros together. Now Willow and Rayenth discussing Rayenth flying Naliath, that's totally plausible. F'nor and Canth discussed the radical idea of Canth (a brown) flying Brekke's queen before she rose. But again Canth just accepted the idea that he would fly the queen. He didn't give it another thought until it was time to fly.

As for the update...very nice. It was a good spotlight into life in the Weyr.

Closing her eyes, she slipped into a calm sleep, an image of a smiling blonde flashing through her mind.

Loved that. Prolly a good thing too given that her dragon will be a potential mate for Nalianth.

Good POV on Willow and Tara's thoughts. It makes sense that Tara is looking for friends given that she is in a whole new place. It's also realistic for her not to expect them around the other werylings for a variety of reasons. Most of them are from the weyr and quite close knit and at home unlike folks from holdings like Tara. Also, hierarchily, a gold rider will have little to do with green riders on a day to day basis and much more to do with Bronze and Brown riders who are higher up on the totem pole. It's not a matter of snobbery but just the way things run in the Weyr. I think you improve on AM by letting women impress Browns and of course Willow as a Bronze rider.

In any case, a queen's function is unique while Blues&Greens have pretty much the same function as rank/file fighting dragons and Bronzes&Browns function as the leaders (weyr, wing and wing second etc) . As co-leader of the weyr, the Weyr Women is also involved in politics dealing with other weyrs and lord holders like her father. That will be quite an encounter. As Weyr Women, Tara will actually have a higher rank than her father as Lord Holder (I think) or at least be at his level. I imagine that it will be quite an adjustment for him.
Not only that, but she’d had Rayenth for three Turns now, and still he hadn’t flown a single female, not even a green.

Hmm. Thinking on this bit from Chapter One, I wonder if Rayenth's lack of interest has much to to with Willow. While dragons certainly have needs, a component of their rider's desires must play a role. For one, I don't think F'lar's Mnementh would keep flying Lessa's Ramoth well into older age for both rider and dragon unless both parties really wanted it to happen. In any case, considering the riders of the dragons join when their dragons do, it's certainly nicer if you like the other party though not essential. My feeling is that most Bronze riders develop some sort of positive feelings for the Weyr Woman if not love as a matter of common sense. F'lar was more than willing to have Mnementh fly Jora's dragon to become weyr leader despite not having any sort of attraction for her.

Another thing that I believe plays a role in who flies the queen is actually what the rest of the Weyr wants. In some cases, the Bronze that flies the Gold is the one that everyone wants to be Weyr leader despite the feelings of the parties concerned ala Moreta. The second is a complication that could hurt Willow's chances since her bronze is considered on of the "weakest". But really it's not a popularity contest. The Weyr wants a leader who knows how to lead in fighting thread first and foremost. Being weyrlingmaster is actually good training for that. It's been ages since I read the Pern books so some of the above is prolly wrong.

I really love this setting for W/T

Hey there,
I'm guessing I'm minutes ahead of another update. Lucky night for me I guess. Interesting again to see the contrast between the girls. They definitely need each other. I think that Tara's part shows not only her lonlieness and sensitivity but that Willow is right in her assessment about how Tara will react. She already understands the rawness of Thread from her friend's perishment. Your portrayal of Tara's dragon is really well done.

Willow's part very interesting indeed. She's so obviously interested in Tara but I really like your description of her passion for flying and for fighting Thread. Interesting that she predicts Tara will love it too. Very cute part with her thinking of Tara.

Hey guys. I'm very sorry about this, but apparently my clockwork broke. In all truth, I've had a rough weekend and haven't been able to work on the update at all. It is, therefore, unfinished.

However, it *will* be posted tomorrow, and next week's should be back on schedule.

Sorry it's taken this long. My mom unhooked my internet, so I didn't get it back until like ten minutes ago. :happy

SakuraEtsuko - Awww, thanks so much! ^^

tarawhipped - Of course. You'll have to make it up to me later though ;)
Okay, I messed up and forgot about the Threadfall. So let's just pretend it wasn't until the next update, okay? okay. I'll go work on that before I forget again...
Who, me? Cliffhanger? Nasty? No, never! Why Cam, I'm, I'm injured!
Don't you just love subtext?

Maccoda - Yes, I know. In AM's Pern, women can only ride greens and golds. But... well, I didn't really see how a woman could Impress a bronze but not a blue or a brown... I find that odd. So, voila. Female blue and bronze riders.

watson - Oh, stop, I'm blushing! ...no. Go on. Really. Hehe...
The dragons aren't plotting. I'm not ruling out the 'knowing' bit, but dragons SUCK at plotting. They have no short term memories.
I love suspense. It keeps things interesting.

caz - It'll happen, it'll happen. Patience is a virtue ;)

skeeter451 - You read the Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, didn't you?
Glad you liked it... and I'm illustrious now? Oooh. Sparkly! (Don't ask. Illustrious just sounds like a sparkly word to me. I'm weird, so sue me.)

sam7777 - That's true. Gold riders do tend to have less to do with the lower ranked members of a Weyr and more with the wingleaders, weyrleader, junior weyrwomen etc. Though occasionally friendships are forged.
Oh yes, that WILL be an interesting encounter, won't it? She won't technically have a higher rank than her father, Lord Holder of Fort Hold and Weyrwoman of Fort Weyr would be at approxomately the same level. However, Fort Hold is beholden to Fort Weyr, pays for the Weyr's protection from Thread through tithe etc., so it's generally accepted that yes, she would have a higher social rank. And there are WAY more famous Weyrwomen than Lord Holders.
And actually, that was all pretty accurate.

JustSkipIt - Oh, you're good. You caught that, huh? Glad you enjoyed it ^^

Notes: Meeting at the lake

---------------
Chapter 6
---------------

Tara smiled softly. She was lying on her stomach in the grass beside the lake, a hundred lengths down the slope of the old volcano from the Weyr. She was alone, except for Naliath. It was a rough hike to get there, around back of the lake. Most of the weyrlings stuck to the front, barely knowing of the twisting trail through the trees to the far side. There was a small clearing here, and then a wall of trees, and then a stretch of beach before the lake. She lay in the middle of the three length by five length clearing, the trees on three sides and sheer, rocky cliffs, pockmarked with tiny caves, on the side facing the lake.

She picked a blade of grass, twirling it around in her fingers. Four sevendays, she’d been in the Weyr. Four sevendays, and she’d barely made any friends. Sure, Shannen, Illirie and the rest were nice enough, but… there was no one she really connected with. Apart from Naliath, of course. It amazed her how fast the little gold was growing. Already she was four, five times the size she was at Hatching.

They’d learned a lot together, too. It had started with basic dragon care, of course. Oiling, washing. A few trips down to the lake for bathing. They’d even done some stretching exercises, to prepare for flying lessons. They wouldn’t be for a long while yet though. Willow had taken them to the firestone room once. They weren’t to do their lesson there yet, but she’d wanted them to get used to the ‘reek’ of it. Tara giggled, remembering the way the weyrlingmaster had wrinkled up her nose at the smell.

Five days ago they’d begun working on their flying gear. There was a lot of it, so they had to start well before flying and between lessons. It was a whole outfit, and if you made one mistake you had to start the whole piece over with new leather. If you didn’t, it could be fatal. Tara sighed. She’d had no idea how much work was involved in Weyr life. Still, she wouldn’t give it up for all Pern.

Soon she’d have to go for her private lessons with the old Weyrwoman. While the other weyrlings were helping their dragons learn to chew firestone, she’d be learning how to operate a flamethrower. She figured it would be pretty easy, the ones used from dragonback couldn’t be that much different from the ones she’d used while out on ground duty.

Tara rolled over onto her back, tucking both arms behind her head. Closing her eyes, she smiled softly, feeling the sun beat down on her. I think I understand why you enjoy sunning so much, Naliath.

The quiet beat of wings willed Tara’s eyes to open. She looked around for a moment, confused. Finally, she looked up. The body of a dragon was fast approaching, the sun shining off the bright bronze hide. Naliath bugled a happy greeting. Love, who is it?

It is Rayenth and his!

Tara smiled softly and stood up, backing away a little to give Willow more room to land. She wondered at Naliath’s response; the young queen seemed very excited to see Willow and Rayenth. Was she lonely out here with just Tara? She shook her head and sighed, dismissing that thought entirely. It was just because they were nice, that was all.

Willow leapt down from Rayenth’s back, looking around a moment. Spotting Tara, she grinned. “Hey! Tara!” She waved the young woman over.

Approaching with a happy bounce to her step, Tara waved back. “Um, hi Willow. Do you want some, um, time alone? I can leave…” she gestured over her shoulder with her thumb.

“No, that's all right. Wanted to say hi.” She smiled, patting Tara’s shoulder affectionately. Willow leaned back against Rayenth, tilting her head back to feel the sun on her freckled face. “Having red hair kind of sucks sometimes.”

“Why? It’s so pretty.” Tara bit her lip.

“I don’t tan, I freckle. All over the place. I mean, look at this.” She rolled up one sleeve and stuck out her arm. It was, indeed, covered in freckles.

Tara giggled. “It’s c-cute.”

The redhead lifted one eyebrow and shook her head. “It’s annoying is what it is.”

With a heavy thump, Tara flopped back down on the grass, leaning back to brace herself on her hands. She smiled up at the weyrlingmaster. “So, what brings you out here on such a fine day?”

Willow grinned. “I was thinking of going for a swim. It’s damned hot back at the Weyr, out of the shade, and especially in these clothes.”

Tara eyed Willow’s heavy riding leathers and nodded. “So swim away.” She gave a cheeky grin.

“Come with me?”

“Um… o-okay…” Tara stood again.

Willow grabbed the hem of her tunic and tugged it up over her head. Within moments she stood there entirely naked. Not for long did she remain, however, turning and running into the cool water. Up to her thighs in the lake, she launched herself forwards, ducking her head beneath the surface. She came up, spluttering only a little, and turned to face the shore.

Tara was staring, wide-eyed at Willow. She’d agreed to swimming, but hadn’t thought of all that entailed. If there was one thing Tara could never do, it was strip in public. Wrapping her arms around herself, she shook her head at Willow’s questioning look. “I, um, changed my mind. I think I’ll just stay up here.”

“Come on, Tara. What, nervous about stripping?” She giggled. “Trust me, Tara. In the Weyr, that’ll go away soon enough anyway. After your first flight…” she trailed off, wondering at the pang of jealousy that shot through her. She shook it off. “You’ll never be embarrassed like that again.”

“I just don’t like, um, being… in front of people.”

“No people here. Just you and me.” She threw herself backwards in the water, kicking her feet. “Nobody here but us wherries.”

Tara slipped her fingers under the hem of her shirt. Casting a nervous glance around, she bit her lip and tugged it off, stripping as quickly as she could and bolting into the water. Once in, she ducked low so only her head and shoulders broke the surface. Tara fixed Willow with a glare when the redhead nearly fell over with laughing.

Willow’s laughter was infectious. Tara couldn’t keep the glare in her eyes, and fought to suppress a giggle. Shortly she was too busy in hysterics alongside Willow to be self conscious.

*****

Willow lay back on the grass, Rayenth curled around her. The sun was just beginning to set over the trees. Tara and Naliath had left a few minutes ago, meaning to hurry back to the Weyr before dark. Being unable to fly, they had to leave before Willow did.

I’m glad we ran into Tara, Rayenth. I was looking for some time to be alone… but I think it was better with her here.

She’s nice. Naliath is pretty.

Egg robber. Don’t you go getting any ideas, love. She reached up and scratched Rayenth’s broad side. You’re enough of a handful, I don’t need to go waking up next to some post-proddy goldrider who’ll either be ridiculously clingy or run away in embarrassment. With Tara, probably the latter.

Rayenth made a huffing sound, resting his head down on the grass beside his rider. People could be so strange sometimes. His and Naliath’s felt attraction for each other. He could feel it, even Naliath, young as she was, could feel it. He huffed again. People were the strangest creatures.

So nice to take them out of their weyr surroundings and have an interaction that is not teacher / student. Though you've skipped 4 weeks (ooops, sevendays), the sense of slow progress is apparent. Learning to fly a dragon and fight thread and go between must be complicated and daunting. I like the need to drill the young riders of the need to get their gear on properly, or start again ... their lives / the lives of their dragons and other riders ... all depend on it.

Big LOL moment when Willow stripped naked to go swimming. They are a lot more free and easy in the weyr than in the hold, not surprising, cos of the dangers that a rider faces constantly.
I don’t need to go waking up next to some post-proddy goldrider who’ll either be ridiculously clingy or run away in embarrassment. With Tara, probably the latter.

First, post-proddy :lmao Second, it seems that Willow doesn't find it unusual or appalling that she'd sleep with Tara if Rayenth flies Naliath, but I sense the a distinct lack of commitment there. I guess if she'd really thought about it, she'll only end up having mating flight sex with green and goldriders -- mostly women(?) -- so strictly speaking she's gay (don't even think those definitions exist on Pern). It'll be interesting to see whether the mutual attraction that both Rayenth and Naliath are aware of already will manifest soon, or only after Naliath rises. It'll be fascinating either way and I can't wait for future updates. Hope you can continue to access the internet.

Well a day late but not a dollar short. I really like this update. I love the relaxation you really depict about Tara's trip around that lake and her sunning there. Then when Willow shows up, Tara's offer to leave is sweet but she makes two completely flirtatious remarks (pretty and cute) without Willow flirting back. What's with that? Of course Willow does better than flirt back: she strips naked. She seems implusive and bold and quite wonderful.

I'm not surprised that Tara was a bit chicken on stripping. But she finally did and it certainly showed Willow how shy the blonde is. Lol about the post-proddy. At least the thought is in her mind and I'm intrigued about the dragons' attitudes about it. Well done.

Girl, I could have written the guide...like I mentioned before I was writing Pern fanfiction before the guide was published... In fact, it was my involvement with the Pern community on the old GEnie network (anyone here remember that?) that prompted me to seek out the Buffy fanfiction community when I first discovered the show. The first thing I did after discovering Buffy was look to see if any fanfic was written for it, and boy was I in for a surprise!

Illustrious...of course. Not only a Kitten author, but as soon as I do my updates sometime this week, you'll be a Muse author as well. That makes you doubly illustrious.

Liked the update. Is Willow weyrbred? That would certainly explain her lack of modesty and attitude about waking up next to a post-proddy goldrider. Weyrbred or Holdbred, I'm guessing that Willow's no virgin. Even though Rayenth hasn't flown another dragon, everyone knows that the lusty hormones fly (pun intended) all over the Weyr during a mating flight inspiring the Weyrfolks to party down. And I think that Willow probably hasn't had any problem finding partners, male or female.

As for Tara, I think that as time goes on, she'll grow more and more at ease with Weyrlife. Will the senior queen fly before Naliath is ready to fly? If so, then she'll experience that hormone-fest herself, even if she doesn't act on it.

And I'm sure that sometime before the queen flies (still haven't figured out who the rider is, but I'm starting guess Buffy), Willow and Tara will discover each other and the attraction their dragons feel will certainly extend to them. And I'm sure that by the time Naliath flies, the bond will be cemented and there will be no one else ever for the two of them.

Naeryn/ Megan
Hi. I'm new to this forum but I've been lurking around for a while, reading the great fics I found here.
I'm enjoying this fic very much. I was a big fan of McCaffrey's books many moons ago, and re-read them many times, but my favourites were always the Pern stories. Love the dragons. You've recreated the setting - and the dragons! - very well, and the circumstances you put W/T in really suit the characters.
I'm looking forward to the blossoming of their love in yet another 'verse, but Willow's attitude (post-proddy - what does that mean, anyway?) indicates it's not all going to be smooth sailing. Although I've a feeling that Naliath's first queen flight will be when Rayenth demonstrates his superiority over the other bronzes. I wonder what stage of their relationship Willow and Tara will be at when that happens? Can't wait to find out. And I'm kinda wondering if Tara realises what's in store for her when the queen does rise??? She seems pretty ignorant of the Weyr customs and way of life.

Aw the dragons are so cute :x I wonder how much effort it'll take Rayenth and Naliath to get their people to stop fretting and go for each other? Well, probably not that much, after they've got them talking.

I'm also not sure which to concentrate on, skinny-dipping Willow or riding-leather-clad Willow :blush

:lmao That's just hilarious. I love the contrast between hlder and weyr sexual mores.
You’re enough of a handful, I don’t need to go waking up next to some post-proddy goldrider who’ll either be ridiculously clingy or run away in embarrassment. With Tara, probably the latter.

More and more I think it's Willow's own hang ups that are holding Rayenth back in mating flights. She may not have holder prudery but she certainly has some hang ups. Great update nice to see :willow and :tara slowly getting together.

I'm sooo slow at catching new wonderfull fics like these :-D

I like the entire setting you're using/creating (having never read the books you mention I'll just credit you with everything;-). I can see Tara as some sort of healer, as much as a fighter. I'll porbably have to read your explanation page several times before I get *all* the words. Thats not your fault though, I just want to understand stuff :lol.

I'm wondering about Willow's background. It appears she has been riding/fighting for quite some time (and seen her share of unpleasant things:cry). That would leave precious little time for a somewhat normal childhood, playing around and such.

I was touched when Tara walked toward the gold dragonet to help it. Poor little Naliath got stuck just after hatching and no-one stepped forward to help her ? For shame...tsk...tsk.

Oh... 'sevenday' is a week, ah.. I read that as 47 days, which is a bit more :)

Hi Megan. Getting fb in under the wire, I hope (where does the week go?). I like that you showed W/T away from the weyr, becoming more comfortable with each other and closer. It seems like such a busy place, inconducive for shared quiet time, especially with W's job and T's new responsibilities. The skinny dipping was a nice diversion, and I like how unselfconscious Willow is.

I kind of like not having any preconceptions of what things look like, what certain events entail {**ignorance is bliss, Cam? you must be ecstatic!**} Crap, now Watty and Car have me snarking on myself. Seriously though.....what's up with Willow's jealousy about Tara flying? Do they fly naked? Cause that's just...odd. Next time I fly, if the person next to me so much as removes a jacket, I'm alerting the FAA.

Finally, I continue to love the way you write the dragons' voices, and show the love and affection between the dragons/riders. The "egg robber" line was hilarious. Great job, Megan, and I can't wait for this week's installment.

watson - Heh, I can't take credit for anything to do with the lessons. All of that goes to Rayinte and Nikiana, the two weyrlingmasters of the Pern roleplay I am a part of on Gaia. Rayinte actually made an interesting threat involving weyrlinghide jackets that I might have to work in somewhere... And there tend to be about equal numbers of male and female greenriders, plus gold riders. So the chances are slightly greater that Willow would sleep with a woman, as opposed to a man.

JustSkipIt - I'm afraid I'm a day late again. This chapter was particularly trying to write. What can I say? Bronzerider Willow hasn't discovered the joys of flirting. In the Weyr, they tend to skip that part...

skeeter451 - Ooooh, DOUBLY illustrious. I feel sparkly ^^. And yes, sparkly is TOO an emotion! Willow is weyrbred, and that will be addressed in greater detail a bit later, I think. And the senior queen won't fly, she's retired, meaning she can't fly anymore. She's past clutching age.
And what is with you readers and getting in my head all the time?!

caz - Yep, they do. I'm not sure how the nudging process will go, though. Dragons aren't good at subtlety.

eirnlove - Oh my god. I got an 'illustrious' AND a bow? o.O...

spells42 - I'm glad you feel I've done the setting and dragons justice. And post proddy... well, a woman who's made horny by her dragon getting ready to rise is referred to as 'proddy'. They tend to be exceptionally irritable. I think you can figure out 'post-proddy' from there...

SakuraEtsuko - Hey Karen! Holy shit, that's a lot of bowy emotes... O.O Don't worry, next week's should be relatively long. I'm going to have a lot to resolve... hehe.

Artemis - Well, since riding leathers aren't exactly pretty, and very cover uppish... focus on skinny dipping Willow.

sam777 - Liked that egg robber thing, huh? I originally had it as 'cradle robber', but then, I'm not entirely sure if they have cradles on Pern, and 'cradleboard robber' just doesn't have the same ring to it. Besides, dragons don't have cradles anyway.
Good to see you picked up on that. There's really a lot more of the rider's desire in a dragon's flight than people realize.

grimlock72 - Don't worry, I read the Dragonlover's Guide to Pern five times and still haven't got it all figured out lol. It's a very complicated, in-depth world, with as much layer and realism to it as Tolkien's Middle-earth. The cult following just isn't as big.
And most people in Pern don't have what we consider a normal childhood, they're doing chores and working and not spending a lot of time playing right from the get go, if they're in Hold or Weyr. If they're holdless, they're pretty much just screwed. Unless they're REALLY lucky.
And no one stepped forwards to help Naliath because they aren't supposed to. Beforehand, they're expressly told not to. But Tara never got that speech ;)

Selena Taiki - Good Goddess! Now I've got 'illustrious', bowy-emotes, and a DRAWING! Very nice, by the way. I left you a comment.

tarawhipped - Where does the week go? I ask myself that just about every Sunday and Wednesday, :lol Logically, in a Weyr, Willow wouldn't be selfconscious. No one is. Everyone's seen each other naked, there doesn't tend to be a whole lot of privacy.
When referred to in that context, 'flying' refers to Dragonflight, that is, a dragon's mating flight. And the rider of the dragon who flies Naliath will end up sleeping with Tara.
Glad you're enjoying it!

**HUGE GARGANTUAN CLIFFHANGER WARNING!**
-I am not liable for any heart problems caused by waiting one week after reading this cliffhanger.

-----------------
Chapter 7-1
-----------------

Mine! Thread falls north of the Weyr!

Willow sat bolt upright in bed. Thread? Now? But it wasn’t supposed to fall until this afternoon!

Weather changes brought it on early. Hurry, Mine. We must join the wing…

Yes, yes of course. Willow threw herself out of bed, grabbing her riding gear from where she laid it out the previous night, on the chair near the entrance. Quickly, she tugged on the thick, protective leathers. Rayenth was already perched outside, waiting for Willow to finish dressing and fly down to the Bowl.

Love, tell the older Weyrlings to assemble, and they’d better all be there before I am. Tell the younger ones to gather at the eastern end of the Bowl, that’s where the injured dragons will go. They’ll be helping the Weyrhealer and Dragonhealer.

Rayenth made a smug noise. I’ve already done it, Mine.

Tearing out of her weyr, Willow launched herself astride Rayenth, riding straps in hand. He dropped off the ledge, carrying them quickly down to the waiting fighting wings.

*****

Tara sat perfectly still. She was perched on the edge of her bed, staring in Naliath’s direction without really seeing the gold. Ilirrie, Shannen and the rest of the female weyrlings were clustered around her, trying to get her attention.

She’d been standing when the news came, imminent Threadfall near the Weyr. She’d frozen, her features the picture of shock. And then the news came that the leading edge was north of the Weyr and moving south, towards the water. It didn’t look like it would fall right over the Weyr itself, passing a little to the east. Tara had… collapsed, onto the edge of her bed. That was fifteen minutes ago, and she hadn’t moved since, not even to blink. Only the slight rise and fall of her chest indicated that she was alive at all.

Her thoughts were moving too quickly to comprehend anything outside of her mind. Threadfall, Tara’s worst fear, and so close. Since Winnie’s death, she’d been terrified of the thin white filaments. Strange, they appeared so innocuous, and were so incredibly deadly. Tara was a fool to ever think she could handle living in a Weyr, the pain… How could she be expected to fight Thread? She was only a Holder’s daughter, granted a prominent Holder, but she herself had been little more than a drudge!

Mine… mine… mine… mine… mine… Naliath’s insistent words finally broke through Tara’s catatonia.

She blinked.

Shannen smiled, reaching out and hugging her briefly. Then, taking hold of the bewildered Tara’s hand, pulled her to her feet. “Come on, we’ve got to get ready. We’re helping the Weyr- and Dragonhealers. She patted Tara softly on the back. “It’s all right. They know what they’re doing, and don’t get injured very often anyway.”

“R-really? How do you know?”

Illirie looked over at her and, her own hand held tightly in Lianne’s, addressed her with wide, fake-wise eyes. “We’re Weyrbred. We know stuff.”

Tara giggled, following the girls out.

*****

Willow took her place in the A-formation wing, third from the point, right behind the wingleader’s best friend. He was a bulky brownrider, who particularly enjoyed belittling Willow for Rayenth’s apparent inability to fly so much as a green. He wasn’t one of the best trained either, and had only achieved his position in the formation due to his close relationship with the wingleader. Willow fumed inwardly, she despised being placed behind the man.

He tended to make mistakes. Slipping out of formation, just a little, coming out of between just a little too close to someone. Luckily the rest of them had paid close attention during their fighting lessons, and so could duck between in time to avoid a collision, which could be disastrous.

The leading edge of Thread glistened on the horizon. It was awfully close to the Weyr this time. Willow hated it when that happened, if someone got injured, the new weyrlings would be able to hear it. Some of them would never get over that, for a threadscored person’s scream was pure agony.

The wingleader, J’net, flung his arm forwards, giving the signal to rise. In perfect sync with the rest of the wing, save S’rith, the brownrider in front of Willow who was just a split second ahead of everyone else, the wing as a whole rose from the earth of the Bowl.

In a unit, they turned and hovered for a moment, waiting for the other eight active wings to meet them. They would be the highest elevated wing, since they had all the best trained fighters – save one – and therefore would be the ones to flame the most Thread. Willow frowned at S’rith’s back. He wasn’t holding his position, moving back and forth like a faintly swaying pendulum. That kind of lack of discipline could kill an entire fighting wing.

Then the signal came, and Willow abandoned all thought of S’rith, flying determinedly towards the leading edge with the rest of her wing.

*****

Tara sat, off to the side but near the rest of the weyrlings. She could see the older group over near the firestone room, quickly bagging the rock and tossing the bags along a line to a few green and blue riders who were perched on their dragons, waiting to ferry the stone up to the fighters.

They weren’t exactly busy. One or two of the riders from the wings had betweened down to get brief treatment for a slight score, and then gone up again, but that was all. Shannen had been right, it seemed. They didn’t get seriously injured often, no one had been hurt so badly it would leave a scar yet.

She stood and turned, scanning the horizon. The leading edge was closer now, practically on top of the Weyr, save that it was over to the east and moving south. Unless the wind made a sharp change very suddenly, they wouldn’t be struck by it.

Tara could see the dragons flying amongst the silvery storm, they all appeared to be about an eighth their actual size and flying in an incredibly disorganized way. She knew that wasn’t the case though, she simply couldn’t see all of each wing due to the amount of Thread. She sighed, hoping everyone was all right.

Her eyes narrowed. What was going on? That uppermost wing, she could see almost all of them through a gap in the Thread. Someone near the point of the formation was bobbing and weaving around, contrary to what everyone else was doing. He popped in and out of between repeatedly, each time seeming to fall further and further out of formation.

He almost crashed into the rider behind him, who ducked between to avoid a collision. Then he burst back out, out of formation. Of course, the stupid rider hadn’t moved and was now occupying two positions. Her eyes widened as she saw a clump of Thread blow towards the indistinct out-of-formation rider.

A hoarse, piercing scream rent the air.

*deep breath*

Man, that was an intense cliffhanger. The entire foreshadowing with
That kind of lack of discipline could kill an entire fighting wing.

I don't want to think about who or why that cry at the end belonged to. All points to S'rith, but then Willow and Rayenth could have popped back from between and got caught up in a three-way collision. It's worrisome, and I have to wait a whole week? Sigh.

On the ground, Tara's fear of Thread is also worrisome. She will need help and understanding to get over that fear, if she is to progress as goldrider and live in the weyr.

Again I'm loving the easy way the dragons and riders communicate. It's so natural, so in sync, so ... fulfilling. I'm also loving the regular updates. One day late is fine, as long as I know you're writing.

"We're witches. We know stuff." Tara to Dawn in.... erm, Forever? I think? Do I get an extra cookie for knowing the episode? Har.

So I haven't ever replied to your fic before, but I figured I'd let you know that I'm reading and quite liking. I've read only one of the Pern books like, ever, and I think your version is a lot more nicer. Ya know, with the whole women Impressing different colors rather than being given the crappy dragons... well, no dragons are crappy, but damnit, I know what I mean and I hope you do too, because I'm having a bad case of Inability to Articulate.

Oh, and I'm so grumpified by that cliffhanger!

Ok, lets get this clear; Tara is currently not anywhere near ready to combat thread. Can't have her freeze like that while airborn or in-between. I love Naliath, she got Tara out of her trance-like state eventually. Still it's worrying, she'll need special training for that.

I don't follow the hierarchy I think. Just re-read chapter 1 into but it still sounds weird. Willow is the highest ranking rider below the Queen, yet outranked by Wingleaders ? I would have expected her to at least BE WingLeader (a general working under a colonel is what it sounds like to ignorant me:) ). I wonder about this because obviously the WL of the wing Willow was on has a priority problem, getting his friends in places were they cause problems for others. It's not like S’rith will ever learn to do it right if he continues to get favourable treatment.

J'Net as wingleader and as S'rith's enabler of promoting bad flying is primairly responsable for everything that happens or goes wrong. So whomever got scarred by thread at the end, it's J'Net's fault. I feel almost sorry for S'rith since he clearly was in a position he had insufficient skill or experience for.

Endangering Willow is NOT a good thing. Naliath should be able to tell Tara who exactly got scarred there. It didn't read like it was Willow (description was fairly detailed), but she could easily get caught up in the after-effects.S'rith taunting Willow about her dragon is also not a good way to make me like him btw. :) It's not like Rayenth isn't able to fly a dragon, he's just selective :lol.

If S'rith's dragon is still alive, Tara will have some real patching up to do. Not the most pleasant of duties, though Tara probably likes to heal people and/or dragons.

Even if should would have gotten the 'do not approach' speech on hatching I doubt Tara would in fact have stayed put :bow :bow

Code: Select all
THREAD:      A parasitic spore, long white and threadlike in appearance, that falls on Pern for fifty year Fall periods, interspersed with hundred year Intervals. Thread is killed by fire, water, or extreme heat or cold.

THREADFALL:      The active fall of Thread. Usually lasts three to four hours. Dragons and riders go out during Threadfall and burn it from the skies to prevent it falling on the earth, where it will burrow and destroy crops, kill animals, and lay the land waste.

Tara has a typical holder attitude towards thread: getting underground until it passes. As a queen rider she won't be fighting thread in the thick of things as a Bronze rider like Willow does. Liked the chapter. Threadfall is always exceiting. I think poor Willow may actually be taking a bit of injury here. Hopefully that will open that Wing Leader's eyes. It'd be nice if Tara nursed her back to health. :blush

Poor Willow. Having a chaste bronze is simply not conducive to getting respect in the weyr. That cliffhanger was cruel but I'll deal. Can't wait to see wht happens.

Threadfall always makes my heart pound - and I don't particularly like going outside in the rain after reading about it!

Good update. Hopefully it wont be Willow or Rayenth who are hurt but it's sods law that the person who causes the problems isn't the one who gets hurt by it.

I Imagine that if it is Willow or Rayenth who are hurt Tara will find out pretty quickly since Naliath and Rayenth have some sort of connection.

Gotta say that I was upset that you didn't update on Sunday - but it was so worth the wait!

Eep! Willow's okay, right? :paranoid And Rayenth? It seems to me like the dragons would be in more danger than their riders, being bigger. Whatever happened, S'rith needs a good solid ass-kicking, this thread stuff doesn't sound in the least like something you want to be messing around in the presence of.

Incidentally, I'm continuing my stubborn-yet-fun practice of not looking anything up, and you're doing a great job of conveying the necessary information about the world without it being cumbersome. I didn't have a clue what thread actually was (prior to glancing over the section Grimlock quotes), but I had no trouble understanding what it meant to the riders and the people on the ground, and how it behaved. Parasite huh? I was thinking extradimensional extrusions... but then again, that's my answer for everything odd :D

A Great update. Tara's reaction surprised me a bit - I would've expected a Holder's daughter to have had more experience with threadfall, either as part of the mop up operations on the ground, or in treating injured hold people? I'm really going to have to re-read the Pern books to refresh my memory. Whatever - her reaction matched what we know 'til now of her character in this fic. She's got a way to go before she can handle being Weyrwoman.
Willow's position in the Weyr seems to bring her animosity from some rather than respect for impressing a bronze. I know she loves Rayenth but her life seems rather friendless. I hope that's going to change soon?

I hate that her wingleader puts his friendship ahead of skill and ability. S'rith is a danger to the whole wing and especially to Willow. From what Tara saw it sounds to me like Willow was the one to pop out in the path of the thread, but I'm not certain if it would've been her or S'rith who may have been injured. If it was S'rith, Murphy's Law says it'll be Willow somehow gets blamed for it. Maybe Tara will be able to set it right, since she witnessed it.
I've just had a thought, maybe the scream wasn't someone being injured .....????!!! Can I hope? Can't wait for the next update.

watson - We'll be working on Tara's fear... I was a little nervous about watching the fight from her perspective. I'm afraid I didn't quite express it properly... but then, a little confusion as to the injured party never hurt anyone ;)

Katez0r - You get a cookie! And I don't remember the episode name either, so :P
I know what you mean, lol. I always thought that was a little unfair, myself, thus, changeage.

grimlock72 - No, Tara isn't ready to fight Thread. But hey, she's still got a year before it's even remotely an issue.
And no, Willow rides the highest ranking dragon. That is, a bronze. However, she is outranked by wingleaders, wingseconds, the weyrleader and the weyrwoman. Also, as the weyrlingmaster, she has a rank that's a little bit apart from the rest. I won't get into that, because it's exceptionally confusing if you haven't read the books.
J'net has a bit of a problem there, yes, but it should be resolved rather quickly... we're not going to focus too much on him.
Naliath could tell Tara who got scored, but where's the fun in that? And you're not supposed to like S'rith.

eirnlove - sort of. Thread is a parasitic spore that is produced on the Red Star, a wandering planet (that is, on an irregular orbit). Every two hundred years or so, the Red Star passes close enough to Pern for Thread to make the jump from one more hostile environment to Pern's more welcoming one. Threadfall is the active fall of the spore onto Pern.

sam777 - I might be going a slightly different way with this, but that's a good idea ;) Also true; Tara will be in the lowest altitude of wings, fighting with other golds (if there are any) and weyrlings.

caz - Well, I hope updating on time today plus the particular events of this chapter redeems me a little in your eyes... ^^

Artemis - No, you definitely don't want to be fooling around with Thread. And you're one step ahead of me in that I don't even know what an extradimensional extrusion IS. Yeah, I know. Some scifi geek, right?

spells42 - Of course she has a way to go before becoming Weyrwoman. Aside from the Thread issue, she's incredibly shy and very modest. That just doesn't fly with a Weyrwoman, pun intended.
Heh... you'll see.
