It's funny to see Giles goofing on Willow about Tara and having Faith still there will make things interesting. And maybe deep down Buffy has feelings for Faith that she doesn't have for Eddie and that's way Buffy desperate to give her asecond chance? Diana's warning to Tara of the darkness is coming could mean that Glory or the First Evil is coming soon?

wow, so well written!

An i really hope Faith gets a shot at redemption.

Should i say i love Fuffy nearly as much a Twillow?

Hoping for a chance fo Faith to make it right, and for her and Buffy to at least be friends.
And i wanna know what the Goddess is up to, she's awesome.
Even if she turns out to be evil, she taught Tara to be stronger, and she did a number on Spike!
That was awesome!
I have always hated Spike, though i respect the need for someone a little like him in the story.

Just not vampire rapists please.

Looking forward to more, really really.

Love and cuddles :balloons

R :bounce

P.S: I'm a Willowhand now!
And i got to do it on this cool story!

P.P.S: Teasing Giles is lots of fun!

Giles! You sly dog. Noticing the Willow grins! Oh!
"Tara, There, see, you did it again." Me thinks he knows something...
I'm hoping they give Faith a chance. But we shall see.
And don't worry about the coming out, as far as I'm concerned it will happen when it's meant too, plus it's a good ride getting there!

Well, I wans't calling your interpretation of the Flaming "O" a mistake, because I sort of see it the same way. (Which doesn't mean I didn'tr praise another S-4 fic when Willow came back down from it, turned to Tara and said "I need to make you feel that.") One reason (the other being no TV & no DVDs on hand at the time I wrote it) I set my own "first time fic" at soem unspecified time after "Who Are You." sorry I gave that impression.. And I like that the warts and alll are there, even tho I forget when Im reading well most anything.

Diana's warning; hmm first time I've heard Adam called a distraction. So easy to speculate-heck, it could even, in a way, mean Mr. Maclay..

Good change of pace; a little surprised about Faith's not taking off because "5x5-Sanctuary" were such an important arc.for her in canon. And also curious myself as to what they are going to do as to "rehab."

I can see that Giles would be able to understand Willow's face language, given his own checkered past. (And, be honest, there was soem _HIMYM_ influence creeping in there, right?) And that he'd keep quiet.about it. (Actually, this is exactly the sort of things the Core 4 only failed to pick up on from each other because of their alienation. (Makes me wonder how this will change "Primeval..") Also reminds me of some things said to me (by my therapist and a close female friend) back in the 80s about my own real feelings for my future ex.

As always, this just gets more interesting with each resoluion.

Hey all, thanks so much for continuing to feedback. This already feels 'epic' in terms of being 'long' but today I redrafted part 144 (which is the start of the parallel of Tough Love) which means that I'm 100 parts ahead of the posting.

Three hundred days of posting at 3 days a post... Will anyone stick it that long? LOL Short by Sidestep standards though...

I may accelerate posting a little when I get the redraft finished... I hope to do that in January (though that might be tough) so I will have spent at least 11 months writing and redrafting nothing but this LOL since I started on Feb 29th last year... (That's 11 months excluding my Nanowrimo - 15 days of T&W do Raiders of the Lost Ark - in November)

Anyway, that was me... felt like a milestone.

Grimm - Is Faith that Slayer? Well... I was really just messing with the Yoda line 'There is another' but could be :)

I do like to let Giles tease from time to time... especially when it highlights the cuteness of the girls. I think things stand out more when seen through the eyes of others. Plus, nice that he kind of knows without being told.

Faith. I am right there with you. There are limits in the story in terms of what I can do, of course. But... suffice it to say that things will not exactly be canon. Make of that what you will. I mean, come on, I was the writer who gave you Giles and Jenny's daughter called Faith named after her... I'm not dead-pooling her (again!)

Thanks!

Kajun - I tend to do that, stick a nice chapter in there for the girls. Because so long as they're not out of character and forgetting everything that is going on, why not? The show rarely, if you look at it, had stories that covered consecutive, nonstop, day and night action. Usually they had time in between even in a crisis! So I like to fill that time and I will keep doing it.

I am not sure, right now, that Tara thinks Willow is 'too easy' LOL. Or vice versa!!

And why impersonate Faith if you have a Faith in a cage. There's a Buffy/Faith in prison story to be written there... cell mates of course!

Your speculation... I cannot possibly say, but I love to see it!! Since you made several guesses about the same things, I can say that at least one of them is wrong :)

Faith's chance... she managed it in canon. Sort of. So it's not unbelievable here... but as for the rest, again you are speculating :)

Thank you for your ongoing support, peep-peep.

Willow_friendly - LOL I can see that you'd be a fan of the Buffy/Faith in a cage... I have to admit that during the last two 'episodes' I was willing to mess with the tension and insinuation of 'Faith in Buffy' or vice versa... Course, I see Faith as a big-old top :) Though Buffy might surprise her.

I will say this... we're paralleling canon. Season 5 will be covered in detail. And Glory is an external factor, unaffected by the change made so far. So she has to be dealt with. But it may not play out as you'd expect. Or it might. As for the First Evil... I have a slight understanding that was something that happened in BTVS but I sure as hell wasn't watching. For me this show ended at the end of S5 (yes, I have problems with ALL of S6) so... no, nothing from after S5 (from canon) apart from dealing with a few 'issues' that raise their head in S6 in terms of proving we didn't have to go there but only if they show up in S5 too (like Willow's magic use starts in S5 so I do touch on it and deal with it in a much better way (I think))

Thanks!

Azirahael - Again, thank so much for the kind words!

I've never shipped any couple that wasn't at least partly canon so... I'd never thought of Fuffy much UNTIL I WROTE THIS. I mean, yeah, there was ridiculous tension between Faith and Buffy if you wanted to see it that way back in S3 and you know what? I never much cared about Buffy's love life in the entire show (or her as a character really - I was more about the others from episode 1). But I'd have cared about THAT! LOL

Buffy and Faith friends? That would be a tough sell... but they've agreed to give Faith her shot. Kind of... maybe.

Yup, whatever I do with Diana now, she'll always have killed Spike :)

I've killed him in practically everything I've done. Early. With no reason to linger. Almost... throw away. Funny that.

Dru on the other hand... well, she was Willow's sire in Sidestep, Darla's girlfriend and we've yet to see her appearance in this story but there's a canon episode so... :)

Thanks so much and congrats on your posting level...

Missocki - Hey, yeah... Giles isn't so innocent. As we know from Band Candy... He knows what to look for. Yeah, what you can pretty much assume in this fic is that anything that's an iconic scene for the girls will probably occur in the same 'episode' that it did in canon. Maybe slightly different and people may know already or whatever, but I try to stick to that so that you get to have those scenes in some form and still mean something. It's fun that way and saves me being as creative :)

Thank you!

Daddycatalso - Oh, I know you weren't criticising. You will notice, I love to reply and ramble to stuff (see all the above) so I like to let loose my thoughts when someone gives me the chance. That was all a chance for that really :)

Diana has another perspective on pretty much everything. She's quite focused in her own way... so yeah, Adam... distraction :) And in terms of 'big bads' he was pretty much the feeblest in terms of impact. The scoobies had already torn themselves apart and the season was more about that and the change for me than him. Witness the fact that he vanishes for so much of the time... So maybe Diana is reflecting my thoughts. Though... I do have something I THINK is very cool planned for him. Maybe you guys won't agree, but... I like it.

I know what you mean about Faith's arc and if I was writing her PoV then I'd probably have done it. However, this way I get to hold onto her for a little longer so... I prefer this one. Plus, see Faith in a cage fantasies above :D LOL

I don't specifically recall the HIMYM element to the facial expressions, but I dimly do think there was something about that in there. I think it was Robin though, rather than Lilly? I could be wrong... But yeah, you will find all sorts of HIMYM, Big Bang Theory etc in there. Mostly because I enjoy the shows and I've watched them a lot more recently than any Buffy which is 10/11 years ago for me. Not one minute of the show has passed my eyes since the episode before Seeing Red was first aired. Funny, I'm so very, very over that. I don't miss it at all because I have the stories here. Like I said above... I've spent 11 months nearly writing this, every single day bar a couple and writing long fic tends to create it's own reality. As I've said before, after many years writing Sidestep T&W I was struggling to break free of who they had become. I'm just about happy, as I redraft, that I've managed to pull this story's T&W back to who they should be.

With some tweaks...

See how I like to ramble? ;)

Oh... the alienation in this version of S4? I'm trying to keep it at the level of they all have new lives... That should be enough, I hope... With no Spike to stir it, I am hoping that what happens stays on track without worrying about that too much.

So, thank you for letting me ramble again. This is why I like feedback and especially feedback that raises issues. It lets me write in my excuses!! LOL

That would be the intention, yes. I don't write T/W just for myself...

It's pretty much a scene by scene retelling with the girls, an original character and some other BTVS characters in some of the other roles (but not a scooby story at all). There's not a lot of surprises if you know the movie, but it's based on the original script which has some interesting things in that never appeared on screen.

It's only 50,000 words or so (a short novel), but I had fun with it.

Also it opened up - for me - the possibility of an original story with the girls in the same roles.

My problem with it is that I've never been very happy with the girls not being 'themselves' at least in some way. Though I am sure there are some FANTASTIC stories here that are cross overs, they've just never interested me that much. So while I really enjoyed the writing of it and I will almost certainly post it here, what the future would be possibly for a sequel that was original? I don't know...

It won't be for a while yet though. Got to finish the redraft of this (CWS), do some other writing and then get to a redraft of Raiders. However by the time I finish posting CWS... it could be in the ballpark, timewise.

Oh... would now be a time to mention that at the end of November (as Raiders was done) I started a (Wo)Men in Black in original story cross over? (Funny, given what I said above!)

See, wasn't that a short response to a simple question? :D

EDIT - See, now I've had to go turn the Raiders March on... which inspired me through the writing. Also, I should note that the fic was done as a collaboration. Not just me!

Coulda. Woulda. Shoulda - CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE - 01/18/13

Postby Katharyn » Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:30 pm

Title: Tara and Willow – Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda – Chapter Forty-Five
Author: Katharyn Rosser
Feedback: Absolutely, yes please. That’s why I write for this place, to engage in the discussion about the story.
Spoiler warning: Not sure why I am bothering, really, but Season 4 and Season 5 of BTVS.
Distribution: This story was written for Pens. Pens is its home. No archiving off Different Coloured Pens and the Kitten Board please. No conversion to eBook or other formats please. Enjoy it here.
Summary: Tara meets Faith. Yes. Really.
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the copyrights or anything else associated with BTVS. All rights lie with the production company, writers etc. I am making no money from this series of stories however all original characters and situations remain my property. As this is a missing scenes and alternate reality fiction lots of scenes are new versions of those seen in the show, as such dialogue and situations are taken from the show. I’m sure you can tell which. All credit for those aspects goes to the original writers.
Rating: Occasional, tasteful, adult situations and contextual bad language. However by and large equivalent to the show.
Couples: Tara and Willow forever, that’s all I’m bothered about.
Text convention: Use of italics denotes either special emphasis if used for a single or a few words in a sentence OR first person thoughts if used for a whole sentence.
Notes: Okay, regular readers of mine will know that I have a soft spot for Faith and the possibilities that Tara and Faith in the same space open up. So… I had to have this, something that puts them together in a room before the end of this run of Faith episodes.
Thanks to: Whoever invented tank tops for girls… Fashion milestone exploited so beautifully by Miss Dushku.

“I trust you,” Willow repeated.

But she hadn’t once asked Willow to do that. Had she?

Saying it once, that was sweet. As a reminder. Twice kind of suggested Willow was trying to remind herself of it in the face of what she thought was a bad idea.

Three times? That probably made it a very bad idea.

At least now the discussions had stopped. Decision made. And it was probably really, really helpful that she’d arrived to find Buffy in an unexpectedly cooperative mood too. What with her aims and all.

Diana said they needed the Slayer. It was just that she hadn’t exactly meant Buffy…

So, that meant someone had to reach out to Faith. It wasn’t going to be Buffy, despite what Tara had overheard in the moments before she’d let them know she was there. It wasn’t eavesdropping, not if they could like see you just by turning their heads a little. And Willow should’ve known she was there anyway.

She guessed that it was because her girlfriend had been distracted by the conversation she was having. She still was. Faith Lehane was a big deal for Willow. Anything about her.

If not Buffy, who at least had some empathy – if not sympathy – for her counterpart/replacement. After what had happened then who’d have supposed it’d be that way? Willow was sounding about the most intransigent person and in her mind that was probably about all the things Faith had ever done to her, to her friends and… Willow liked to make her decisions quickly and then stick with them.

In terms of their relationship that had been a good, good thing. No angst, no worry. No doubts about whether that was really what she wanted. It just…was. Willow had decided and that was that. It was a trait Tara was appreciating very much.

But for Faith? Willow had as much as admitted that they’d fallen out the very first time they met. Faith had been sarcastic about her and rebuffed her attempts at being nice and making friends. It’d gone downhill from there because Faith didn’t sound like the most ‘transigent’ person in the world either. (If that was really the opposite of ‘intransigent’?)

Their personalities had clashed and by the time Faith went off the rails entirely there wasn’t any room left for anything but ‘I was right’ and ‘I told you so.’

And Willow had been right. She had told people so. Good for her.

But now Willow was the one between her and talking to Faith. She wondered, briefly, whether hearing it from Diana herself would’ve actually helped…? Maybe not. It probably would’ve just provoked an argument between Willow and a Goddess and… there was no telling how that would’ve turned out. Not well, she was willing to bet.

“I know,” Tara said this time about the trust.

“But I think you’re kind of cuckoo too.”

Tara smiled, Willow was making progress and wasn’t actually fighting her on this. She hadn’t done more than try to persuade her and even that had been couched in words of trust. Cuckoo marked the end of that resistance though. “I kn-know.”

“Well, so long as you’re aware of it, that’s the important thing. I don’t pretend to understand what you’re trying to do here.”

“Neither do I, not fully.”

“You’re just taking Diana’s word for it?”

“What choice do I have? I believe her or I don’t and she’s not misled me so far.”

“But she hasn’t been very transparent either.”

“She did tell me something,” Tara said, wondering whether she should go there. But, it was Willow. “Slayers… They’re hers.”

“Hers?”

“They’re hunters, they’re nature’s reaction to the presence of the demons and the supernatural. They’re the counterbalance to the things that don’t quite make sense within the laws of the world we exist in.”

“She said that?”

“N-no… I was kind of reading between the lines or most of that. But when I asked her, she did nod.”

“You got all that from a nod?”

“I’m… good at reading nods.”

Willow smiled for her. “Not sure that changes anything.”

“It does, because as far as she’s concerned Faith – and Buffy – are both hers. They might not know it, they might not look to her, but… they are hers and so… I don’t think she’d let anything happen to Faith if it wasn’t her will.”

This time though, Willow shook her head. She was pretty good at reading those too. Call it empathy.

“No, I’m sorry, baby, but she’s been letting things happen to Slayer’s for thousands of years.”

“I said that,” Tara said, which made Willow smile again. “I said that, because you’re right. But she hadn’t been paying attention, she didn’t need them to be anything but what they were?”

“But she needs Faith?”

“Yes.”

“Couldn’t she have needed Kendra? Maybe helped keep her alive? She was nice, she was friendly. And so far as I know she didn’t open her legs whenever there was a warm breeze.”

Tara, having never known Kendra, didn’t have anything to compare with really, but the facts were what they were. “The Darkness wasn’t coming at that point…”

“Who’s that? Sounds like a band?”

“I don’t know, but Diana’s worried about it. She’s plenty worried about it.”

“Which – I suppose - means we should be,” Willow said, then biting her lip. “How long do we have until this Darkness?”

“I don’t get the idea its right here,” Tara said. “She… She’s really not very good with the idea of time. I mean, we haven’t seen her for a while but she didn’t recognise that. Or what might’ve happened in between, but I get the idea that wherever she’s been, it’s brought this Darkness to her attention.”

“And now she’s worried. What does it take to worry a Greek Goddess?”

“Not just a Greek Goddess,” Tara corrected, “a supernatural concept, a balance…”

“Like she was brought into being by people’s need to hunt?”

“Ares was the personification of a human need to conquer and take what belonged to someone else.”

“Aphrodite being the desire to take someone to bed and have your wicked way with them,” Willow said, pressing up against her.

Tara kissed her girl’s face. “D-depends. Eros, Aphrodite’s child, was the God of Lust and Sex. Aphrodite was actually love.”

“So… Because I love you and want to have my wicked way with you,” Willow said, “we can have the organ grinder please, not the monkey? A female god. Aphrodite, please?”

“I g-guess.”

“Good. I’m happier with a Goddess than a God watching over us. Another one… I wonder how many of them are still walking the world, like she is? Is she a survivor? A straggler? Are they all still out there?”

“People still love, they still have sex and they still make war… I guess it’s maybe more relevant to talk about whether they’re personified like she is?”

“Hmm. Well, whatever, we have to tell Giles about this Darkness,” Willow said.

“Okay,” Tara said. “But there’s something else I need to tell you about Diana, what she said to me before…”

“So go on, tell me?”

“No, I need to see Faith first. I want to know if we can use her. It’d change things – I think.”

“Faith does the using,” Willow said. “Just ask Xander. Or don’t, if you don’t want to be grossed out with unnecessary details.”

“I didn’t mean – I didn’t mean ‘use.’ Not really. I meant if she’ll cooperate and work with us.”

“Baby, she’s a rogue Slayer. A snake. No matter how quiet she looks right now, she’ll want out of that cage and she’ll say nearly anything to get out of there. Do anything.”

“She can’t lie to me,” Tara said.

“What did you do?”

She turned her hand over, showed it to Willow. “Is that a truth stone?” Willow asked.

“Uhuh.”

“Where did you get a truth stone?”

“Umm.”

“Tara… where did you get a truth stone?”

Willow had seen through it right away, of course. They could’ve made one, but otherwise it would’ve required another trip to the nether realms to create and the last time… Yeah, that had been interesting all around. “I found it.”

The stone remained absolutely quiescent.

“Now, so far as I know the stone reacts to the presence of the truth so… you just told me a lie. Right?”

“I was testing it,” Tara said, causing the stone to brighten and glow. That was the point of the truth stone, the purpose to which it had been put for hundreds of years – or more. Not to catch the lie, but to reveal the truth. Testimony in the presence of the a stone guaranteed that the truth was being told – so far as those involved knew it – rather than attempting to find one thread of a lie in the whole tapestry. Finding a lie was a much simpler spell than uncovering the truth.

“Okay… so where did you get a truth stone?”

“Ethan.”

The stone continued to glow. More truth.

“You went to Ethan?” Willow actually sounded hurt.

“I didn’t choose him, or him over you, sweetie. D-Diana had already arranged it. He’s better at these things and I think, maybe, he just had this ready.”

“Ethan Rayne.”

“Yeah…”

“I trust you, Tara,” Willow said, much more simply. “But Ethan? I don’t trust him. Diana… I’m not sure we know what she is yet - or what she wants. But I’m telling Giles about the Darkness, we are. We have to.”

“Let me just see about Faith first,” Tara begged. Somehow she just felt it would go wrong if it wasn’t done that way around.

Willow, showing some urgency, pushed her lips against hers and kissed the heck out of her, holding her tight. “Only if you’re careful and you don’t get close to her. And never, ever, let her out. The only bruises you’re allowed are hickeys I give you, agreed?”

Tara grinned, possessive Willow was always a fun chick to be around.

Yeah, that’s right, I thought of her as a chick.

I’ve got a chick.

“I promise, I won’t let her give me a hickey.”

“Seriously, please be careful,” Willow stressed, symbolically stepping out of her way. Tara didn’t pass her right away though.

In truth she wasn’t exactly sure what she was going to say when she got in there and frankly the place spooked her a bit. Not only was it where Willow’s ex had secured himself so he didn’t hurt anyone at a full moon – the same cage - but the idea that a room like that could exist on campus – even given everything else she knew about what was on (and under) campus – was freaking her out.

Just a little.

Up to now she’d been focused on not sneaking past Willow. Full disclosure. That was where trust came from. And now she’d done it… what?

“Of course I’ll be careful,” she promised, finding dealing with Willow much easier than what she faced in there. “I’ve got everything to come back to.”

“Yes, you do.”

She waited, thinking. “Don’t you want to go in?” Willow asked.

Yeah. That. “Yeah. Okay. I’m g-going. This is me… going.”

“I hear raised voices then I’m coming for you, I’ll turn her into a toad and Buffy can stamp on her.”

Tara looked back, appreciating both the safety net and the freedom Willow was giving her by not insisting on coming with. That was what trust really was. “You think you c-can do that?”

“I’ll have to research really, really fast,” Willow admitted, making them both smile. “Maybe I’ll start now. Just in case.”

-----------------------

“This is unexpected,” Giles said.

“Buffy’s cool with it,” Willow replied.

“I’d imagine that it’s your blessing Tara’s more concerned with.”

Oh yeah, he definitely knew… “Well, I’m cool with it too. I don’t do ‘cool’ much, but I’m cool with this.”

“Because you trust her.”

“Yes.” Her look challenged him. Go on, say something about Tara. I dare you. I double dare you.

Whatever he thought he knew about them, he still didn’t know Tara. She was the one who did, only her… And to be fair, that would probably be the cause of his reticence. If he knew Tara better… yeah. And whose fault was that?

Hand up, lady with the red hair. That’s right, get it way up in the air and wave it around. Yes, you.

“Don’t you want to tell me I’m wrong, that I’m taking a stupid risk with a very dangerous person?”

“Undoubtedly, if this was Xander then I’d say ‘yes’ but you have a level head, you generally make good decisions about both your friends and your safety. Also, I know very well that you loathe the girl and have done for some time.”

“Just to be clear, we’re talking about me loathing Faith, right?”

He just smiled.

“Additionally, from what little I’ve seen, your friend Tara’s very much like you, but without the loathing.”

“I didn’t know this was going to happen,” Willow said. It wasn’t like she’d been happy about Tara going in there.

“I’d imagine not, but one day soon, Willow, we’re all going to have to sit down and take stock of what’s happening around us, where we stand and we should do about it.”

“Absolutely, I was just saying that to Tara. There’s stuff you need to know, stuff that she agreed you need to know.”

“And now isn’t the right time?”

“I’m watching this, I’m watching Faith.”

“No,” Giles said, “You’re watching Tara.”

He was right there. She turned back to the doorway and peered in through the bars.

-----------------

“So what’s happening, rug muncher?”

Tara sighed, surely that wasn’t the best way to start out.

“You know your girlfriend hates me?” Faith asked.

“I don’t think she h-hates you,” Tara said.

“Yeah, she does. But that’s okay. Plenty of people have hated me.”

Past tense. And she didn’t imagine it was because they’d all come around…

For a moment she wondered whether Faith was about to tell her the story of her life, the mother who abandoned her, the father she never knew. Something like that. Or maybe the Lehane family had been a happy one and Faith was the odd – wild - one out.

But if there was such a story then it never came. No excuses. No sob story. Just that comment and from what Willow and the others had said, Faith wasn’t one to hold back even if she the kind who’d despise being pitied. She had animal cunning. That was what they said. Not to mention a deep understanding of how to manipulate people. The chances she was holding those details back just for effect were probably slim.

More like she just didn’t want to talk about it. Even though it might actually have done her some good.

“You don’t care? That people hated you, I mean?”

“I haven’t up to now,” Faith said.

Which was telling, when you thought about it. It wasn’t of the present.

Impressions, that was what she was getting. She’d never met Faith in her own body until now and this, real, version was a very different person to who she’d been when Buffy was in there.

The way she held herself, the way she moved. The way she wore her clothes and her mannerisms, down to the smallest physical details. Buffy had – unconsciously – continued to try and be Buffy through the time she was trapped inside Faith. No doubt the reverse had been true too. More so because Faith hadn’t wanted to give herself away.

“I’m g-glad you got your real body back,” she said. “It suits you.”

“Now don’t you lez-out on me.”

“That’s n-n-not - ”

“Much,” Faith finished with a smile. A joke, even though she was locked in a cage. “Forget it, bad joke. I can see right through you, what was your name anyway? Tara?”

She nodded. Most people here had called her Lara or Sara after first meeting her. Faith remembering was an improvement.

“Well, Tara, you think you can read me, but I can see right through you. You’re like a penguin. You mate for life. Do I mean penguins?”

“I… don’t know. I get what you’re saying though.” And Faith was right. What had she been holding back out of? Fear? Sure. A search for perfection? Definitely. And now she’d found it… she couldn’t imagine herself anywhere else than in Willow’s figurative – and literal – arms. “Wait - ”

“Don’t worry, I’m not trying to seduce you into letting me go.”

“G-good.”

“You’d know if I was.”

“I’m sure I-I would.”

“Actually I’d already be out. Or… you’d be in here, if you’re kinky. You kinky, Tara?”

“I…”

Faith’s narrowed, judging her. “Hmm, you really don’t know yet, do you?”

“I’m n-n-not kinky.”

“Relax, girl,” Faith said. “It’s no bad thing and one person’s kink, that’s another person’s vanilla. But… I’m surprised you and Willow haven’t sealed the deal yet. You’re obviously so into her it’s just… It’s sickening actually.”

“Not everything is about… that.”

“What? Sex?” Faith asked and Tara nodded, blushing just a little. Wasn’t she supposed to be the one controlling the conversation? “Sure it is. Wars are fought over it. Land, territory, resources, all that stuff – it’s really just about having food to feed kids, having women to have kids with. One way or another.” She shrugged. “It’s your basic human thing.”

“No wonder you’re so down on everything.”

“I don’t pretend to be smart, what I learned I mostly learned by doing. That or off the TV. And that was my one, big speech. But go on, tell me I’m wrong?”

The thing was, you couldn’t really argue with it. She wanted to believe people had come further than that – she did believe it of individuals – but as a mass, Faith might have a point. Maybe.

“That’s not what I came here to talk about,” Tara said, feeling like she ought to get control of things.

“Oh, well, please have a seat.” Faith gestured to the empty floor in front of the cage and sat down, cross legged on her straw, hands propped under her chin and looking like a small, attentive child. Apart from the fact she was so obviously a woman.

And that was something she’d already concluded about Faith. She didn’t think this was a girl anymore. Maybe she’d skipped right past ‘girl’ from child to woman. Maybe that made her the way she was. She’d grown up too fast. Maybe… she wasn’t asking for that consideration though. Maybe Faith didn’t care what she – or anyone else – thought?

Luckily for both of them, even knowing she was gay, Faith wasn’t making a play for her. It wouldn’t have worked anyway, but it would’ve been… kind of insulting. This was better.

“Thank you,” Tara said, for more than just the offer of a hard floor. She’d have expected to be told to F-Off. That was definitely what Willow had thought would happen.

“And you have manners too, Willow’s Mom must be thrilled. Except… no, maybe they’ve not met you yet either. Hmm, Willow’s keeping you under her hat. Or is it just in her bed?”

“It’s not like that,” Tara said firmly, surprised that Faith was even trying to be that observant. That wasn’t what she’d been told. Maybe Faith saw more than she cared to admit to?

“No…? Because, she was about to introduce you around when I showed up. You were the one who spotted me, I could tell.”

She nodded, that had been the way it went down.

“The bathroom thing, I couldn’t help myself. That one was a mistake too. Am I right?”

Once again, she nodded.

“Sorry to rain on your parade there, Tara. Still, you must be good at what you do. You were the one who found a way to swap us back too?”

“Y-yes.” Was that the start of a threat? But Faith didn’t seem that bothered. She was stuck in a cage, but she didn’t seem to even care. What had happened to the girl – woman – that everyone had been so afraid of?

“Good work. You know, I think the man who gave me the gizmo to do the swap over, I think he’d have liked you. He’d have found you a job working for him, if you wanted it.”

Not knowing who that was, Tara didn’t know what to say and she’d generally found it better to say nothing at all in that circumstance.

“I’m babbling now,” Faith said. “Already bored. You know, you wouldn’t have to let me out if you want to come in here and help relieve the tedium? You can even handcuff me if you like. Except… no, you’re – you like a girl who uses her hands. Or you will.”

“Stop it.”

Faith laughed, revealing just how absurd her attempt at ‘seduction’ had been, even to her.

“Bet you ten dollars I’m right about the hands though, I know the type… Knew, anyway.”

“Stop, please.”

“Oh, come on. Show a little adventure, Tara. It isn’t cheating if I get there first is it - ”

Tara shook her head. This wasn’t serious it was just… It was what someone who knew Faith better would’ve expected. A caricature of herself in way.

Was Willow or one of the other’s watching? Was Faith putting on a show for their benefit?

“Stop. It. Faith, I know you don’t mean a word. You’re not the only one who can read people, you know.”

She liked to think her gift was empathy, Faith’s was observation and a cynical understanding of people. It was a shame really, because no one could deny that she was attractive, she was smart enough to survive as a Slayer and she had all those gifts of that heritage.

And then she’d turned rotten.

“No f-f-fooling you then.”

Shaking her head sadly, she brushed off the taunt. “And that’s just p-petty.”

That she wasn’t getting to her seemed to deflate Faith and she visibly slumped, turned it into leaning back and finally asked the question she should’ve asked right up front. “What do you want, Tara?”

“I want you to give yourself a chance.”

Loved how strong the conversion with Tara and Faith was and i think that after they start to know each other more they'll become good friends. Giles conversion to Willow about the lack of communication thats going on is really important especially when something Big is coming. And Diana needs to understand that Buffy is the true defender of sunnydale and not her and Willow should tell Tara that also. Sorry when it comes to the chosen one i don't like change. :ashamed

Love the story and Can't wait for next update!!!!!

nice!

I like that Faith is so adversarial, even if she's trying to do the right thing.
It makes it seem real, like she doesn't know how to get what she wants, so she's trying, but getting it wrong.
if you get me.
Um.

anyway, cool. :bow

And i'm really hoping Buffy and Faith become friends.
Possibly friends with smoochies. :pray

Love, everywhere!

Eagerly looking forward to more! :bounce

I'm such a sucker for solid Tara and Faith interaction, and I sit here with my fingers crossed, whimpering.

You've got Faithy bear down pat, and I can just picture the two of them sitting there. You pain a brilliant picture, madam.

Oooh, big response so quickly :)

Missocki - There's just a big dibby pawprint... :)

Willow_friendly - Well, I've written Tara and Faith as friends before. As we know Tara's way stronger than she looks and I think you'd have to be with Faith. She's the sort of girl who'd break her toys... (not that Tara is a toy!) But you have to be able to put up with a lot. Though whether they have time for that... not saying... The rest of your post is almost speculation I shall not answer just yet :D But thanks!!

Azirahael - You're really back with a vengeance LOL. Faith's not going to change very quickly even if she does change. She was no different with Angel which - in canon - was occurring a little later than this and her experience (until this part) really hasn't been so different to canon so it stands to reason... And even if she's trying - which I am not convinced she was until the very end of the part - you're right that she's still adversarial. That's what she knows, it's who she is.

For me she was playing with Tara. Rather like a cat with a mouse. Except the mouse is outside the trap and has her finger on the button to flush the cat down the toilet. And isn't very mousy... Umm... Anyway, it's only when she's not getting anywhere with that she actually sits down and gets into what Tara wanted.

Buffy/Faith? You're a bunch of lesbian chasers... Sheesh. Everyone liked Eddie (unless they thought he was a bad guy in waiting) and now you all want Buffy and Faith to hook up? Poor Eddie...

Thanks very much :)

Faolan - Heya, thanks! Tara/Faith. For real (rather than Jenny/Giles daughter Faith in Sidestep)... Do you know how long it is since I last did that??? A LONG time. Oh yeah. So I am enjoying myself in these period where I've got them both.

IThis is one of the more meaningful Faith-Tara interqctions I've read, as well as a very beleiveable one.

My references to _HIMYM_ above- I had 2 scenes in mind. One where Lily keeps saying Robin's name to Barney to catch his reflexive smiles, and another ep. where Lily is trying to keep something quiet and Ted rmeinds her that one drawback of her having "giant anime eyes" is that it nakes hiding things almost impossible for her. Giles's little speech reminded me of both those.

Daddycatalso - Thank you. I hope the ones that follow it live up to that. Needless to say, we're not just going to leave the Faith thread hanging.

Re: HIMYM - I recall the parts that you were talking about now, though I certainly didn't when I wrote it (I tend to rewatch the 3 random seasons I have on DVD more than the rest which I don't... I have no patience for actually watching TV these days. I record stuff then watch the whole season in one one LOL). More likely I was just channeling it or it came from just 'general exposure' or somewhere else entirely. So much of writing is synthesizing what you've seen and read and thought looked cool with a new twist and maybe a touch of originality for seasoning :)

Thank you again

I'm glad Faith's attempts to rattle Tara's cage came up empty. I hate that she feels like she has to lash out at everyone around her ALL the fricking time. I know it's just a defense mechanism. But, It still sucks major ass when it's directed at Tara :rage .

Giles has Willow's number...lol

So, the Slayers belong to Artemis?.......Hmmmm :hmm . I am very curious as to the reason Tara needs Faith to play nice in the sandbox.

I'm putting the cart before the horse here. But, is the something dark that has Diana worried her Uncle Hades or the Uber Bitch, Glory?.......And, are Glorificus and Artemis on the same level as far as strength, speed and power?

I need to know :gnome !!!!!!!

It's not that i wish Eddie ill, he's just not very interesting.

Grimm - Thank you!

I can imagine that Tara has some experience with people lashing out (and probably meaning it) from her brother who we will see is a nasty piece of work. So she probably reacts more calmly than the only children Xander, Willow and Buffy. Plus, she's Tara...

Slayers belonging to Artemis... I refer you to previous comments. Just because it's said doesn't mean it's necessarily so. I mean, the Greek Gods 'claimed' just about everything one way or another. Could be a case of last (wo)man standing!

Your questions/speculations, I really cannot say! All will become clear!

Thanks again!

Azirahael - I was teasing, of course. And I still am. Bear that in mind as I say...

We have no way to know just how interesting Eddie might be. He's just not 'interesting' in sight of the girls. Could be, in private, he's very interesting! Plus... Buffy needs normal. Riley was supposed to be, but wasn't...

Technically, you're not on a lesbian board. You're on a board where the only lesbians we have to present are Tara and Willow. Apart from that, we're very inclusive and welcoming (still teasing!) I don't owe you no other lesbians. Though... you may not be unhappy with SOME of the things that are coming *cough* (Please remember this is a T/W PoV fic... so you ain't gonna see anything even if it was there! Which I'm not saying!)

Happy at the end of S5 is the goal, of course. Though kind of tricky. I mean, look at the canon!!!!

Gay? Well, the important ones will be...

Katharyn, It is rather hilarious that Ethan, of all people, would have a truth stone. Can he even be near one without it registering lies off the charts? LOL Tara is pretty good at reading people but questioning Faith, and accepting the truthfulness of her answers, would require more than pretty good. The concrete statues springing to life, Artemis, a sleep spelled water pistol and now a truth stone. You’re just full of cool ideas and gadgets!

Faith was going easy on Tara compared to the bathroom incident. At least, that’s the way I see it. Here, there’s a different tone that feels more teasing than outright mean. There were plenty of times, in canon, that you could see Faith right on the cusp of opening herself up to friendship and trust. But, it sure didn’t take much to make her retreat with a viscous slamming of the door. If anyone can get through to her, it’s Tara. Still though, I’m glad Willow is watching Tara’s back… and I don’t just mean Tara’s back-side! :grin

I must be out of it, I actually thought I went back and gave you feedback. Fevers do that to a lady I guess.
So, lots to absorb here. The slayers being hunters and therefore under Diana 'mantel' if you will, is oddly fitting, it also ties into what Dracula said/will say to Buffy. She may call it patrolling, but she is hunting. I'm curious to see what Tara will be asking of Faith.
I like that Tara and Faith seemingly see right through each other and know just what to say to get right to it. Go Tara for getting Faith to cut the crap. I like Faith, sometimes, but not when she is doing the defensive teasing.
Giles really gets it, and it's funny that Faith could tell that Willow was trying to tell everyone, yet the rest of the gang (not including Giles, because knows something is up) doesn't see what's right in front of them. It does play right back into the distance of the group and of the incidental parting of ways.
I can't wait to see what you have in store for us kittens as continues on (season five +?)

Kajun - Hey peep. I figure that Ethan has probably got all sorts of things hidden away LOL. The man travels with a bust of his god as we've seen, so it stands to reason he has more! Also I wanted to make sure that we were showing that he did have something going for him that the girls could not do (or would've found harder.) He doesn't use 'magic' in the same way that they do, but he's good for the rituals and transmutation. Just nice to remind you guys of that when I can.

Also, if I want something, I can just say 'It came from Ethan' with no other explanation required!

There's another 'cool' effect coming up in the not too distant future... before the end of the season, that falls under the same category as you listed there. :)

Not at the time, but in hindsight, I think perhaps that Faith was 'going through the motions' with Tara. What she's expected to be. But the fact she's still in the cage suggests she's accepted it. In full on 'wild Faith' mode she'd have broken out, hurt someone or hurt herself in the attempt. Maybe all three. This is more... broken Faith. Kind of paralleling what she'd have been with Angel in the canon after she left Sunnydale.

And yes, you know where Willow was looking :)

Thanks!

Missocki - You is sick? Get well soon!

I don't think I'd thought of what Dracula said in canon (though it may have been in my mind anyway) when I wrote this. But you're absolutely right, it does fit into that. It just seemed natural though, of the Gods I've implied are still around in some form, Diana is the natural fit and it's good for the story.

As I've suggested in some previous feedback, I'm not really seeing the group tearing itself apart in this season. Spike isn't here to stir it, but they are further apart than they have been. As people will be when they leave school and go into the world. So the dynamic is still there, but I won't be taking it to those extremes.

(Interestingly my ORIGINAL plan before I'd written much at all was to have them fragment and pretty much leave us in the story with just the girls... I wanted to do that to 'get rid of' the scoobies in the same way that in Sidestep I re-wrote reality to remove or kill them. But actually... no. I'm having fun with them again for the first time in ten years or more...)

So yes, there's distance and that will be handled, but not the destructive split.

Thanks so much and... Season 5+? LOL. Well, I am wondering as I still prevaricate about the content of the final episode of S5 )or this parallel version), whether I'd be better not trying to fix everything in that episode and instead do the episode and then clean things up after that. Not as S6 but instead as a series of chapters to deal with the resolution.

Plus time to show the happy and together after the storm...

Katharyn, I want you to know that I have no expectations of all the Scoobies making it to the end of Season 5 alive.

So, to make things easier on you, I nominate Dawn as the Scooby I would like to see eliminated......PAINFULLY :grin .

So, to be clear, you want me to 'eliminate' the character whose presence drives the whole 5th season canon? Umm... T&W are, of course, safe but of everyone else that you could pick you pick Dawn?

This isn't a question of merits but actually of difficulty!!

Coulda. Woulda. Shoulda - CHAPTER FORTY-SIX - 01/20/13

Postby Katharyn » Sun Jan 20, 2013 6:37 am

We're a day early, but I figure a 300 day head start on y'all could be enough! I'd really advise checking out the links and in the notes and yes, I know it's spelled 'wrong' in the story. But that's kind of the point!

Katharyn

Title: Tara and Willow – Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda – Chapter Forty-Six
Author: Katharyn Rosser
Feedback: Absolutely, yes please. That’s why I write for this place, to engage in the discussion about the story.
Spoiler warning: Not sure why I am bothering, really, but Season 4 and Season 5 of BTVS.
Distribution: This story was written for Pens. Pens is its home. No archiving off Different Coloured Pens and the Kitten Board please. No conversion to eBook or other formats please. Enjoy it here.
Summary: Celebration and some down time after capturing Faith

Notes: I think it’s one of those things that’s important – especially reflecting on how relentless season 5 will become (in canon too) – to let the Scoobs have their down time. It was a big part of the show in the first three seasons, often played out in the Bronze, and despite them having their separate lives and our focus on Tara and Willow, this is… I wanted to show it. Why not? Plus… Muppets.
Also, time really does pass. We last saw Tara in with Faith. It’d not going to be like flicking a switch to sort her out now is it?
Thanks to: Jim Henson. Because. And if you’re too young to remember the Muppets back in the day, this specifically OR you just want a reminder, the folks at Youtube are here to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N_tupP ... ature=fvwp
(PS – I first saw the Muppets a few years after they came out… I’m not quite that old! Searching for the above link revealed the utter horror of a Disneyfied, CGI show…)

“So…? Manamanama?” Giles asked, repeating the word slowly.

“That’s right, Manamanama.”

“I’m sorry. I have… no idea what you’re talking about,” Giles said.

“Didn’t you get the Muppets in England?”

“Absolutely, though I was undoubtedly too busy drinking tea and cutting the crusts off little cucumber sandwiches to notice.”

Willow grinned. “The kind of tea you were drinking back then, I’d bet it’d make the Muppets even more colourful and amazing.”

He sighed, but didn’t correct her assumptions about his recreational drug use back in the day. “Remind me why I’m here?”

“Because we’re celebrating,” Willow reminded him. “All of us. Because Buffy’s where she should be. So is Faith and because every so often you have to let yourself off the leash.”

“Ah, that. And perhaps you’d now tell me why I’d submit myself to this bastardisation of a once great and noble culture.”

“Huh?”

“Karaoke. And more particularly, Muppet karaoke?”

“It’s one word,” Willow said. “And it tells you on screen when to do it. Look. One word. The ball even bounces along it.”

“Then I can’t imagine why you don’t do it.”

“Because ‘manamanama’ needs a male voice. I bet you’ve got a great voice, I don’t have a voice at all. No voice. In fact I’m surprised you can hear me now.”

“No.”

“Tara and Buffy are waiting for you.”

“Then they’ll have a long wait.”

“One word… one word… and I’ll tell you what Tara told me. After all that is why you’re really here, isn’t it?”

“As long as you don’t feel you’d be betraying a confidence.”

There was a hint of criticism in his tone, which was fine. But Tara had spent nearly half an hour with Faith and declared – not asked - that she was going back the next day. Okay, yeah, then she’d asked if anyone minded and the declaration had turned into more of a polite request. It’d been cute to watch, really.

And no one had been able to think of a reason why to not let her do just that.

After all, what else did anyone have in mind?

Updates on what Tara had accomplished had been harder to obtain for the rest of them. It wasn’t that her girl had sworn her to secrecy but… Willow hadn’t felt it was her place to say anything while the others hadn’t quite known how to ask for themselves because they didn’t know Tara well enough.

And so Giles’ quandary. He was curious, he had a professional concern and he had to say something to the Council at some point. So… yeah, he needed to know.

But before all that he could do what his Slayer wanted. He could get up and sing. Then he could get the info he wanted.

Such as it was.

He was in America now and over here you didn’t get something for nothing here. His singing was really just getting into the spirit of capitalism and self-reliance.

“Are we quite certain that Buffy’s been swapped back entirely?” His question suggested a certain dubiousness as he looked up towards the stage.

“I’ve heard her sing before,” Willow said. “But, you’re right, I’ve never seen her want to do this. If it’s any reassurance though I think Faith would rather die than sing. And Tara says she’s sure they’re both where they should be.”

“Aha!” Triumph.

She’d given something away, but that was just a little taster. To get him to do this.

“Okay, okay, that was one of the things Tara wanted to find out. She figured it out first, so we thought maybe she could make double-certain that everything was back to normal. Well, as normal as life on a Hellmouth gets.”

“Well, thank you for that much at least.”

She couldn’t say that Tara reaching through the bars to take Faith’s hand and check her had been something she’d wanted to happen. Seemed like a psycho Slayer might’ve turned that into something. But Faith had gone along with it and Tara had come away both unscathed and reassured.

For some reason Tara hadn’t even felt it was a risk whereas – if she’d been asked up front – Willow would’ve said that it was a certain way to get a broken arm at the very least.

“You know what you have to do to get the rest,” Willow reminded him.

He didn’t go though. At least not yet. “You put a lot of store in what she says, don’t you?”

“I think we both know that you know that I know why you know that,” Willow said.

He nodded. “I can’t imagine why you don’t just say something? You know how oblivious some of our little group can be. If you’re hoping they’ll just work it out - ”

“Stuff, in the way.” She shrugged. “There’s no hurry. Tara’s not going anywhere. But… you are.” She knew him well enough to recognise his attempts at distracting her.

“So why isn’t Eddie doing this part?” Giles asked, his question marking an acceptance of the requirement. Last arguments.

“Umm, because he’s not here.”

“True. I imagine a low profile would be helpful to him right now. He and Buffy talked I take it?”

“Yeah… she wasn’t very happy when she came back. That’s why we’re out and why we’re celebrating. Get her mind off that and what Faith did, what she almost did and what… he did.”

“Ah.”

“Ah.”

“Well, if I do this, it’s on the strict understanding it sets no precedent for future social occasions, nor any implied approval of this venue or the activities that take place there in.”

“Karaoke.”

“Yes, that.”

“Noted,” Willow said happy to have gotten what Buffy had wanted.

“And you need to join me. You need to face your fears, Willow.”

“Uhuh,” she said, shaking her head fervently. “I don’t face my fears. I avoid them entirely, find other ways. Like… not going up there. I don’t sing. Period.”

“It’s just one word though…”

Which was what Tara had said. But it wasn’t true! “No, the girls part is much, much, much more complicated and requires the ability to, you know, carry a tune. Stay in tune – something about tunes anyway. See, I don’t even know the terminology. If I can’t get that down and I can’t follow the theory let alone the practice, what use would I be?”

“Sing or stand aside!” The MC’s voice rang out over the mircrophone before Buffy borrowed it to introduce him.

“In the title role, Mister Rupert Giles!” The crowd didn’t go as nuts as you might’ve though, though a pair of Japanese businessmen had been looking suitably enthused all night. Did they get Muppets in Japan? Would it mean anything to them? Surely it would. Everyone liked Muppets.

Tara liked Muppets.

“Role?” Giles mouthed as she was led away.

“I guess maybe Buffy doesn’t know the terminology either…”

Willow sat back, watching events unfold up on the ‘stage’ area. Giles tapped the microphone, both Buffy and Tara already had one. This was like… perfect. She was sure Tara wouldn’t stammer singing anyway, but this wasn’t even a ‘song’ in that sense. And it was more than great to see Tara getting on with her friends. Especially after that time with Faith that everyone was just a little suspicious about.

Maybe ‘suspicious’ was a little harsh. But certainly curious. On top of the link with the Goddess… that curiosity probably wasn’t helping to integrate Tara into the group.

Willow’s girl had proven herself though, she’d earned a lot of slack. Maybe not as much as any of the others just because they’d all helped each other many times over the years, but she could tell that her friends liked Tara. Events, once again, were complicating that but they liked her. This was the night out that they’d meant to have before Faith stole Buffy’s body.

And what wasn’t to like about it?

Willow’s mind was elsewhere when it came to rating Tara… she was far past ‘liked’ and soaring up into ‘adoration’ but tinted with ‘surprise’ all along the line.

Tara was always surprising her. Three things in the last few hours. The first, obviously, with Faith. The second just how yummy Tara made that sweater look with her jeans (yay for the way she wore her girl-curves) and the third about volunteering to sing.

That was something she’d absolutely not known and would never have guessed at. The one time she’d had cause to be in the shower block at the same time as Tara hadn’t exactly been a moment to sing…

But, on reflection, Tara was always humming and singing to herself when she thought no one was listening or she wasn’t interrupting anything else that was going on.

This was going to be good though.

“What are we doing?” Anya asked, sitting down next to her without being invited.

“Anya?”

“Yes. It’s me. We’re late because we were having sex.”

“Remind me to ask someone to talk to you about what TMI means, okay?” Willow asked.

“Okay, sure. Are they going to sing?”

“Umm, yeah. Xander’s…?”

“Getting drinks. He’s not getting you one.”

“Okay… thanks for sharing that.”

“Get your own boyfriend if you want to be bought drinks.”

“Okay. Will do.” She already had a full glass so it wasn’t worth arguing about.

“What are they singing?”

“Tell me you know what the Muppets are?” Willow asked.

“Of course, very popular in the demon realms. The greatest cultural contribution of this reality in the last century . Why?”

“Nothing… just the backwards British guy doesn’t know Manamanama.”

“Manamanama?” Xander asked, sliding across her – much to Anya’s annoyance which she wasn’t slow to demonstrate – is that what they’re doing?”

“If they ever start,” Willow said. “Ooh!” The music had started, which silenced any further conversation. No way in the world were any of them going to miss this.

With Buffy and Tara looking at each other, waiting for the bouncing ball and then managing to get their timing – and pitch – just right…

“Do-doooo-do-do-do

Do-do-do!-do

Do-do-do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do”

“Manamanama!” which was the Englishman’s contribution to the performance. And he looked suitably embarrassed as it was made clear to him that his voice needed to go down… way down. The second time was a little better, but then by the third one everyone seemed happy with the guttural “Manamanama!”

Even Giles. There were cheers.

Because by the time they were getting most of the way through what was – opportunistically – being called a ‘song’ he was into it, swinging and almost dancing as the two girls leaned in close to him for their do-do’s.

Willow had never considered the phrase ‘it does my heart good’ before, but it did do her heart good to see Tara in amongst her friends, singing no less. And between she and Buffy, they were carrying as much of a tune as they needed to.

Maybe I need to ask her to sing for me.

And Tara surely would, once freed of the artificial constraints that you don’t sing to your girlfriend. It was a rule, one Willow mostly applied to herself because, hello, nearly tone deaf. But it didn’t have to apply to Tara. Oh no.

The crowd in the bar seemed to split themselves into two groups, the girls joining in with Tara and Buffy, while the boys tried to out-do each other on how down and gravelly they could make their “Manamanama!”

All too quickly it was over though and they could milk the crowd’s appreciation for a minute before the next names were called out and they were heading back to the tables.

“Oooh, sushi,” Willow said as Tara passed her one of the two plates they’d been given in return for getting up to sing.

“I didn’t know you liked it?”

Willow grinned. “What’s not to like?” Yeah, so far there was only one person around this table who might read anything into that and he was far too ignorant of slang after 1970 to say anything.

“Hey, guys, guys, shut up a minute. I have something to say…” She looked at Tara, wanting her know that this was the time. This was the moment, but she had time for a taste, before Xander scoffed the lot.

Popping a piece into her mouth, she was all too quickly in a flood of tears as she virtually inhaled what must’ve been wasabi, stuck to the roll. It went right up her nose. “Hot. Hot. Hot.”

Tara’s hand in the small of her back didn’t help, that was one thing her girl couldn’t fix. Burning fire in her sinuses that felt like the only way it’d go away was if her brains slipped out and cleansed them all.

“Drink this,” Tara said, a little more practically.

Not seeing how it’d actually help, she did as she was told only for Tara to slap her on the back just as she was taking a deep drink and…

After the water had stopped running out of her nose, “Hey, that really helped but… oww.”

“S-sorry,” Tara said.

“You okay, Will? You’re looking a little green, kind of Wasabi colour,” Xander teased.

She nodded, still dribbling. Or was that dripping if it was her nose?

“I don’t know what you saw in her,” Anya said. “I mean… look at her.”

And everyone was. Not for the reason she’d wanted though. Damn it.

“Nothing to see here,” she gasped. The burn was still there, but lighter now, very much relieved.

“Exactly my point,” Anya said. “I have to say ‘thank you, Willow’, you’ve probably put Xander off you for life.”

Shaking her head, Willow just brushed it off. She hadn’t exactly covered the ‘Xander’ thing with Tara in any detail. But she had no reason to think that she’d actually be at all bothered. After all, they all their histories, except… Tara really didn’t. But that was a history in it’s own right. And she hadn’t enquired too much about it.

Not meeting the right person, that was explanation enough.

And you know what, it applied to her just as much as to Tara. Right up to now… After all ‘not meeting the right person’ was something that either didn’t happen to you or did happen and you found out the hard way.

“Wh-what were you going to say?” Tara asked when she’d recovered enough to talk properly.

This was like the text book on how to ruin a perfect moment though. Triumph, that was what she’d been about to exploit. They’d come through something bad and Tara had been the one to get them through it, otherwise how would they have swapped Faith and Buffy back? That was all Tara and with everyone realising that, with the triumph, hadn’t now been the perfect moment to tell everyone the perfect news? After the singing?

Except…

She had burning sinuses and water coming out of her nose. Everyone, you know Tara. She’s not only a powerful, witch and nice girl, but she’s the person – woman – girl – I’ve fallen for – fallen in love with. Me and her… we’re together – lesbians together – lesbians - gay type people – gay lovers – in love.

And it’d started out so well, she’d planned and thought everything would just… flow. Then Wasabi. Curses on the stuff.

Still, better than the time she inhaled that rice and Buffy had to give her the Heimlich. She’d thought her ribs might crack.

Maybe, on reflection, maybe sushi wasn’t her friend.

------------------------------

“I was going to do it.”

“I know y-you were.”

“I wanted to do it.”

“I heard,” Tara promised. “I heard you. You were ambushed.”

“Yes,” Willow latched onto it. “I was ambushed, by Wasabi. You know, me and sushi? There’s bad blood there. I shouldn’t have had any, after all it was you three that went up there. I hadn’t earned it and because I hadn’t karma came back to bite me with a fiery nasal cavity.”

Tara smiled. “You know I don’t mind.”

“You don’t mind anything,” Willow said as they neatly sidestepped someone intent of getting into a power-bar but struggling with the packaging. Horrible things.

“That’s n-not true, I mind lots of things,” Tara said.

“Then you don’t complain, not ever.”

“I might, if you keep putting me on a p-pedestal.”

“Is that what I’m doing?” Willow asked, seeming part amused and part curious at the idea.

“I’m not perfect, Willow.”

“I think you’d have to let me be the judge of that.”

“You’re biased.”

“It’s true, I am. So go on, make your case, Tara Maclay. Convince me that you’re not perfect. Maybe I’ll just leave you right now and stop returning your calls.”

“I don’t c-call you.”

“Okay… that’s true. But it’s not a flaw. I prefer seeing you to just hearing you. I’m a very visual person. I’m all about them inventing the practical video phone.”

“W-words, I sometimes have trouble with words. You m-might have noticed.”

“Me too,” Willow replied. “I can just go on and on and on… usually till I get right off the topic and everyone’s lost. But I’m stopping now, before that happens.”

“I’m shy.”

“And it was adorable.”

“Was?” Tara asked. Adorable she could imagine, Willow had waxed lyrical more than once about the first time that their eyes really met. And she felt the same way, how could she not? Seeing simple, immediate connection and – what she now knew be – adoration in that moment… Adorable was the right word. But now it was past tense?

“You’re not so shy as you like to think, you’ve been coming out of your shell,” Willow said. “Which is ironic, being as every time I try to come out something gets in the way and just spoils the moment.”

“I know you’re trying,” Tara said, squeezing her. “You think I’m not shy though?”

“I have news for you, shy girls don’t – as a rule – get up and sing Muppet Karaoke. I think that’s in the shy-girl handbook, your warranty is invalidated and your membership revoked from the Shy Girls of America when you get up and do that. They’re not very happy with you.”

What could she do but laugh? “I’m in t-trouble?”

“You were one of their brightest stars,” Willow said. “But that shy smile was just too adorable – I mentioned adorable, right?”

“Uhuh.”

“Your smile was too adorable and there was no way that you could keep to yourself.”

“I’m a failure as a shy girl,” Tara said. “It’s true.”

“I love you anyway. Anything else you want to try and persuade me of? More flaws? I mean, come on, lets get them all out there. I’ll refute each and every one of them as anything but the perfection that is you.”

Tara considered. She’d laid the biggies on the table and Willow had brushed them aside.

Well, not all the biggies.

I’m a demon.

“I’m not very… experienced.”

“Me neither, and we’ll fix that one anyway,” Willow said, all conspiratorial.

“I don’t have as many friends as you.”

“As of tonight… probably yeah, you do. You just don’t realise it yet.”

“J-Jokes,” Tara said, now reaching the point where she was dredging the bottom of the barrel.

“What jokes?”

“See! There, I don’t tell jokes.”

Willow pursed her lips and thought about it, Tara could almost see an analysis of all their time together going on and that was already some significant time… thankfully. “No, sorry… you’re wrong.”

“I told a joke?”

“Third date,” Willow said. “You sprang it on me on the third date. I hadn’t realised that you were such an old-fashioned kind of girl, waiting for that long before our first joke. I really thought you were the kind who’d put out on the first date.”

She had to grin, what else was she going to do? “I couldn’t see much to joke about in the laundry room, let alone putting out. It just seemed… wrong.”

“That wasn’t our first date,” Willow reminded her. “We decided that, remember? That was more like ‘hi, I’m terrified, your terrified, want to run down here, get to know each other a little, make out, and your lips are very soft, mmm, that does feel good.’

“That was the laundry room. Definitely not a date, why would you ever say that?”

“Oh… right. What joke did I tell anyway?”

“On the third date, which I guess you’re calling the fourth…?”

Maybe that was a flaw? Maybe Willow would have to admit defeat if they couldn’t agree on that? If they were looking at things that differently, maybe they’d just have to accept it or move on…

“It was the play on words, about the Fae paranumeral/perambulator? I still can’t help smiling when I think of that.”

“You can’t help smiling when you think of me,” Tara corrected.

“Oh, you noticed that too?”

“I think it’s adorable,” Tara said, mimicking her in just about every way.

“It’s not my fault,” Willow said. “It’s not my fault. Giles told me about it and then I went and looked at myself in the mirror and he’s right, you’re both right. I think of you and… Look, I’m doing it now. Silly smile.”

“Sweet smile.”

“It makes me look like I’m dippy,” Willow said.

“Is that a b-bad thing?”

“It would be,” Willow said, moving right up against her. “If it wasn’t you that was making me dippy.”

“I like that,” Tara replied, leaning right back into her.

“You really do.”

“It’s part of the Willow umm-package.”

“True, it absolutely is. There’s no way that you can have one part without the other and I know that you’re into all my parts.”

“Every last one,” Tara breathed, anticipation was rising in her. “Well – except - ”

“So… are you going to kiss me or do I have to, like, grab you?” Willow asked.

“Guess I’m going to kiss you,” Tara said. Naturally once she’d announced her decision she was required to follow through, otherwise she’d be nothing but a tease and Willow didn’t have the patience for much by way of teasing. This she’s discovered, learned and was willing to put into practice.

“Don’t guess,” Willow breathed, pulling her by her belt towards her, against the wall of the dorm.

“Thought you’d want to g-go upstairs - ”

But Willow’s intent was plain enough. Kisses. Lesbian gay type kisses. Lips. Together. She’d heard the monologue, felt it put into practice often enough. Remembered that Willow was always following her. When her lips stayed closed, so did Willow’s. When she opened them, so did Willow. When her tongue… so did Willow’s.

And so she kissed her, leading both their enjoyment of the simple intimacy. Depriving both of them of enough breath over several minutes that when they broke from their clinch, it seemed like they’d been lightly jogging. Snatching for air, just a little.

“You’re the one smiling now,” Willow said.

“Of course, b-but you should look in a mirror.” Rather than that, Tara ran her fingertip lightly around the lines of Willow’s smile. Showing it to her, but Willow seemed much more interested in trying to kiss the fingertip, finally catching it between her lips.

“I love you can do that,” Tara said.

“What?”

“Be… you. Out here. Where anyone will see us.”

“You don’t seem much of a shrinking violet either,” Willow said.

She was, really. Kissing anyone was still a new thing and in the same way that she could get up on stage and enjoy herself in front of lots of people who didn’t know her by singing along, yeah, she could kiss Willow. A lot. But… this seemed a little different. Sucking on the end of her finger… It just seemed like a step beyond a kiss and a little out of her comfort zone because of it.

Not that she actually stopped Willow from doing it, but when her face must’ve flickered Willow had stopped for herself. And, maybe, she didn’t mind what Willow did. She just wouldn’t have done the same thing in her place.

That was what made them different and unique though.

“Sorry,” Tara said.

“Ohhhh, Tara.”

Oh-oh. Yeah… that.

“Sorry,” she said again, but that just made it worse.

“We’ve been through this, baby,” Willow said. “We have. You do something really wrong, I’ll appreciate your apology and we’ll kiss and make up and everything will be good as new - with kisses. But we talked about this, didn’t we?”

Tara had to nod.

“We said, you don’t need to apologise for things that aren’t your fault, didn’t we?”

Once again, a nod.

“And you know what we said might happen if you did.”

“Uhuh.”

“Well?”

“What? Here?”

“I told you, you agreed. You thought it was a good idea. Well, what sort of girlfriend would I be if I didn’t carry through on a promise that’s just for your own good?”

“You’re enj-enjoying this, far too much,” Tara said.

“Well, if you want to wait until we get inside…” Willow said.

But no. That would just be worse now wouldn’t it? Who knew how playful Willow might get about things given that chance… And that was somewhere Tara was comfortable, in her own mind, that she didn’t need to go. Especially in the circumstances that might involve a bed and considerably less clothing.

“No.” Keep it simple. Keep it clean. Keep it… out of the bedroom. That was tougher when all you had was a bedroom and a communal bathroom. Everything else was… outside.

“So?”

Reluctantly Tara turned her back to Willow and before she’d even settled herself found her ass being spanked. Once, then again. Hardly strong enough to be an effective chastisement. But the chance that someone might’ve seen it? That was more of a worry than anything else. She didn’t want to be the girl who enjoyed lesbian spanking.

Lesbian, sure, by all means. But spanking? No… that wasn’t her at all.

The third ‘stroke’ turned into almost exactly that, resulting in Willow pinching her butt and making her shriek and devolve into laughter. “It’s for your own good,” Willow insisted when she protested.

“Just wait until you get crumbs in bed again,” Tara said, allowing herself to be pulled in to another embrace. This one coloured by even deeper tenderness, almost as if Willow wanted to apologise.

“I can’t wait…”

And there it was. She wasn’t – quite – sure whether Willow was joking. After all they were different people. And they’d not exactly finished their… explorations. Indeed, they were only just getting started.

“You’ll just have to,” Tara said. “I’m serious about the crumbs. R-really.”

“I know. It’s usually me that has to lie in them.”

“So you know to stop…”

Willow got, if it was possible, even more playful. “I promise to do better if you let me stay tonight.”

“Let you?” Tara asked.

“You’re right… you’ve got no choice. No choice at all.” A kiss sealed the deal. “Come on, I want to go to bed.”

“Sleepy?” Tara asked.

“What do you think?”

It's nice having the scooby gang enjoying themselves for once. And good thing Willow didn't inhale the Wasabi she would've puke all over the table and on herself...lol. And i also been wondering where Adam has being hiding lately? :hmm

Love the Update and can't wait for the next one!

Heya, thanks :)

Missocki It is nice to do a sweet part, even in the midst of what is going on. I think sometimes where I am up to in redrafting changes the parts I am prepping to post. These last couple of days I've been redrafting Tough Love in S5... So that may have had an influence too. But as mentioned in the notes, it's obvious from canon that they didn't sit there worrying and doing 24-7 even within episodes...

Crumbs in the bed is something that will return, for all it may seem adorable. Pet peeve of mine... I am Tara in this :) As for Mahna Mahnama I've had that in my head for years... didn't take much of a prompt to bring it up :)

Yes, we will hear more on Tara and Faith in the very next part. Thanks you!

Willow_friendly - Yup, you can see above the theory on them having fun. Also, it's a celebration of beating Faith... Which comes to your question. If you recall, the attack on the church that Faith came back from the airport to stop was orchestrated by Adam. I did refer a little to that a couple of chapters ago. And - again - it's one of those things where I can sometimes cover days or weeks in one chapter, or spend LOTS of chapters on just a few hours. So for you it may seem longer than it was since we saw sign of Adam.

But actually, I remember S4 that way. He vanished for a long time. It was only the Spike interaction that showed he was still there. At least later...

Wasabi? That was me. Kind of... :) I didn't puke!

Thank you too!

Katharyn, Cookie Monster!!! If only Ethan could have seen Giles getting into the groove of Muppet Karaoke. Ripper would’ve never lived it down. –LOL Anya informing Willow that Xander isn’t getting her a drink? She cracks me up. Hanging out with her would never be dull, that’s for sure! I keep wondering which episode had this line or that and then realize…. That’s awesome.

So Tara will be continuing her conversations with Faith. Hmm.. I should have known you would take a little side-step :wink and keep us guessing what’s being said. I would be willing to not sing for that info. You ever watch “Splash” with Daryl Hannah? eeeiieeeiieeeee

Poor Willow. What’s gonna happen the next time she starts to spill the beans? They get attacked by zombie-squirrels? Anya wouldn’t be too happy with Willow if Xander’s boy parts were put in danger. LOL

Now it’s not so bad when everyone but Willow is getting spanked. :D Nice twist there! More please!

Very nice; When I read "Muppet Karaoke" I thought it was of the original songs from the movies, and when you wrote those syllables I couldn't place them. THen I realized it was from the early seasons of the show (actually a "cover," so to speak, of an existing vocal/insturmental from earlier in the 70s) altho I thought the deep-voice alien sounded like "manoobanoop." Oh, well. (DOn't recAll exactly when that ep. first aired but, assuming Giles is TOny's exact age -the show soemtimes implied he was soemtimes younger, almost defi9nitely younger in the comics- it could have been after he'd left the cult and was trying to return to the Watcherfold. Whichever it was, unlikely he'd've watched the show then :-).)

I am definitely *not* tired of Willow's getting sidetracked by little disasters when she tries to be honest, still funny with that right touch of poignancy. (will you be oding "Superstar"?)

Kajun: Like the old joke, "Let's eat one now and bury the other one."
