Chapter 11: Demons?
Tara looked at Willow and could feel anger and hurt coming off of her in waves, waves strong enough to twist Tara’s insides and make her feel absolutely horrible for what she had just said. Tara reached out to Willow only to have Willow recoil from her touch.
“Willow, I didn’t mean-.” Willow raised her hand in order to silence Tara.
“Hey. It’s okay. I mean who would want to stick in the same place with a monster like myself? No one right.” Willow turned back to Tara with the plate of pancakes in her hand and forced a smile.
“Willow, I didn’t mean it like that! I simply meant-.” Willow slowly walked over to the table and gently placed the plate on it and walked over to Tara and softly touched her arm.
“No, I get it. Really I do.” Willow smiled softly and guided Tara over towards the table and sat her down, then sat across from her. Tara looked down at her food and then back up at Willow, her eyes shinning with tears. Willow looked up and into Tara’s eyes and noticed that she was about to cry, ‘Great.’ Thought Willow, ‘I made her cry, AGAIN! Man I am such an ass!’ Willow quickly got up and ran over to Tara.
“Tara I didn’t mean to be harsh, I just…I just…” Willow looked down ashamed. “I don’t know how to respond this.”
“To what?”
“What you asked me!” Willow said her anger quickly flaring up again. Tara winced at Willow’s words.
“Willow, all I asked was if it was okay if I could ever leave. What harm is there in asking if I may leave?” asked Tara, curious to know why Willow was acting so…so…so dare she think it? Willow took a breath and ran her fingers through her hair.
“It’s just I take you into my home, clothe you, and all you can think about is leaving. Why?” Willow looked at Tara with questioning innocents in her eyes.
“Because, this isn’t where I…” Tara took a breath to sooth her nerves. “This isn’t where I belong, as you said before, this IS your house, not mine. This is your life not mine, and I hate to be a weight bringing you down.” Tara looked down not meeting Willow’s eyes. For a few minutes they sat in silence, Vampire and Witch, Friend and Friend, or was there more then they were willing to admit? Finally after what seemed like years to them both, Willow spoke,
“What are you talking about?” Tara’s head shot up and looked up at Willow.
“Wh-what?”
“Bringing me down? Sorry to tell you hun, but no one can bring down the already damned.” Willow looked at Tara then locked eyes with her. “You could never bring me down, I like you to much for you to ever do that. I just still don’t get why you want to leave. I mean I thought we were friends, we are friends, aren’t we?” Tara looked into Willow deep green eyes, so filled with confusion and something else she had never in her life encountered from someone before. After hearing Willows words Tara threw her arms around Willow’s neck and hugged her closely.
“Of course we are friends! Don’t doubt that Willow, not for a second! I mean you have done sooo much for me, and haven’t asked for a thing in return.” Tara looked sad for a minute, then saw that Willow was watching her with concerned eyes, so she smiled at her. “You are the sweetest and most kind-hearted person I have ever met Willow. You actually treat me, like…like a human being, instead of something evil or disgusting.” Willow looked at Tara confused then took her hand in her own.
“Who could or would ever, treat you badly?” asked Willow concerned. Tara looked away not wanting to meet Willow’s eyes and admit where she had come from. “Tara, you know you can trust me right?” Willow tilted Tara’s head towards her own and looked into her deep blue eyes, as Willow continued to gaze into Tara’s eyes she could tell that Tara was very reluctant to talk about her past and where she had come from. Tara looked at Willow and could see how concerned and worried her friend was, and then it hit her: Willow wasn’t just taking pity on her because she was homeless and friendless, Willow wasn’t going to hurt her either, she cared, Willow ACTUALLY CARED about her!! Tara smiled and threw her arms around Willow and pulled her close. Willow looked on in surprise and confusion at the sudden change in Tara’s moods, because a minute a go Tara was on the edge of crying and now she was smiling and hugging her close. ‘What a weird human.’ Willow shook her head to clear her mind and to pull herself out of shock, and hugged Tara back. Tara turned her head to the side and laid it on Willow’s shoulder and softly breathed on her neck. Willow tried her best to ignore the building burning sensation in her neck as Tara’s warm breath hit her cool neck, but inside she was shivering, shivering from joy and longing. Willow smiled and gently pressed her hand onto the small of Tara’s back, smiling wider when she felt Tara’s breath hitch a little bit. Tara slowly pulled back from the embrace at the sound of a small ‘Meow’. Willow looked into Tara’s dark ocean blue eyes, when suddenly out of nowhere; Tara jumped up with a yelp and looked wildly around her, with her eyes wide. Willow looked around and spotted a little black tail disappearing under the tablecloth, meanwhile Tara was looking around terrified at not being able to see the thing that had brushed up against her leg; then noticed that Willow didn’t seem concerned, instead Willow was giggling. Tara put her hands on her hips and looked at Willow crossly.
“What’s so funny Willow?” Willow looked up at Tara and noticed how cross she looked and that only furthered her laughing. “Willow? What is so darn funny about me freaking out over here?” Willow looked at Tara then picked up the edge of the tablecloth and reached under the table. Tara held her breath, not knowing what to expect, then she heard a little squeak, she looked over at Willow as Willow began to pull the thing that had attacked Tara out from under the table. Willow looked up at Tara and smiled.
“It wasn’t you freaking out that I was laughing at, it was why you where freaking out.”
In the Immortal Words of Tara Maclay:
"Japanese commercials are weird."
I think we all can agree on that subject.
