CHAPTER 9: WELCOME HOME
Willow was happy. Willow was excited. Willow...was totally freaking. Buffy had her job cut out for her.
"Will, calm down," Buffy said for the hundredth time that day as she chased after the pacing redhead. "The chicken is in the oven and smells delicious, the house is spotless, and you look amazing. It'll be fine. Just relax," she tried to say soothingly.
"But, Tara's coming...to my house...for dinner. Oh God!"
"Yes, yes, okay. But who else is coming?"
The redhead stopped, took a deep breath and smiled. "Chosen," Willow whispered as her smile grew even larger.
"Yes, and let that be your focus. Concentrate on Chosen and how good it'll be to have her here, and let everything else come naturally. There's no pressure."
"Whew, okay," Willow said, taking a deep breath, "okay, I'm better, and it's just a simple, friendly dinner."
Just then they heard a car door slam outside. Willow's eyebrows shot up and she felt a comforting hand on her arm. She closed her eyes, took another deep breath and blew it out. "Okay, I'm ready."

"Relax, T. It'll be fine," Faith spoke into her cell phone from the station.
"Relax?! I'm going to have dinner with her...at her house...alone!"
"It's just dinner, Tara," the brunette said soothingly. "You've eaten a meal with her before."
"Yes, but you and Buffy were there. It's totally different. This is a...a date." Tara had pulled into a gas station to get gas and check on Chosen and needed to hear her best friend's voice.
"You've been on dates before. What's the big deal?"
"THREE, Faith! I've been on three dates, and they all went horribly. I hate dates. I never know what to say, and it's just all...uncomfortable."
"Are you uncomfortable with Willow?" Faith asked even though she already knew the answer.
"What? Well...no, I'm not," Tara admitted once she thought about it. "I'm just nervous I guess."
"Well, don't be. It's gonna be fine. Besides, why are you going there in the first place?"
Tara smiled and turned to look out the window at the crate in the back. "To give Chosen to a great home."
"Exactly. And you and I both know we wouldn't give that dog to just anybody. Red's kinda special, T...and I think you know that."
"I do...that's why I'm so nervous," she whispered.
"Just think about Chosen, get her settled in and go from there. It'll be fine. Trust me."
Tara sighed and blew out a long, calming breath. "Okay, I'm ready."
"Good girl. Now go have fun and call me when you get home. Oh, and if you see B, tell her I said hi."
"I will, and thanks, Faith."

"You gonna answer the door or do you want me to get it?" Buffy asked Willow, who had yet to move towards the sound of the doorbell.
"No, I'll get it," Willow said as her feet finally started moving. With her hand on the knob, she took a second to put on her most welcoming smile as she opened the door.
"About damn time," Xander said as he rushed past her into the house, "this thing was starting to get heavy."
"Xander, what...?"
"Well, not to be outdone by a certain blonde superhero, I come bearing my own 'dog warming' present for Ms. Chosen," he stated proudly. Buffy rolled her eyes and headed to the kitchen in search of snacks.
The startled redhead finally saw the present, completely assembled, topped off with a big blue bow.
"Really?" The big green eyes and smile that lit up her face let him know that he made a good choice.
"Yep -- top of the line, luxury model dog crate for the newest member of our family."
"Oh, Xander, thank you!" Willow said as she flung her arms around her oldest friend. "That's so sweet."
Both heads turned as they heard a timid knock on the open front door.
"Tara!" Willow nearly shouted as she released her hold on Xander and gave the blonde a genuine smile. "You're here!" she said as she practically ran to the door.
Not sure what she had just witnessed, Tara looked around nervously. "Um...is this not a good time?"
"What? No. Perfect timing. Look what Xander just brought for Chosen," Willow said excitedly as she took Tara by the hand, led her into the house and showed her the crate. "My awesome friends both got her 'dog warming' presents. Isn't that sweet?" Willow was beaming at the blonde, caught up in the moment, still squeezing the hand that she held.
"Hi. I'm Xander," the carpenter said as he extended his hand to the newcomer. "You'll have to excuse Will's temporary bout of rudeness. She's a little overly excited today."
Tara gently extracted her hand from Willow, gave him a shy smile and shook the hand he offered. "Nice to meet you."
"Sorry, sorry," the redhead blushed and smacked him playfully on the arm. "This is Tara. Tara, this is my oldest, dearest friend, Xander."
"Hey, what am I, chopped liver?" Buffy asked as she rounded the corner from the kitchen, licking whipped cream off her finger.
"And you already know Buffy."
"Hi," Tara said as she gave the Slayer a little wave.
"Good to see you again, Tara."
"You too," Tara nodded at Buffy then turned her attention back to Willow, feeling a little more comfortable. "So, are you ready for her?"
"Oh, yes. I can't wait!"
The three friends followed Tara out to her truck. She lowered the tailgate and hopped up in the bed. She squatted down and spoke quietly to the dog before opening the door and attaching a leash.
Willow watched anxiously as her new dog slowly emerged, then stopped to take in her new surroundings. She looked even better than a week ago, and Willow felt tears once again trickling down her cheeks. Chosen's eyes met her teary ones, and once again her tail started that thump-thump-thump as it hit the crate behind her.
Willow held her arms out and Chosen quickly moved into them. The redhead buried her face into the blonde hair and hugged her as she cried. Buffy and Xander rubbed their friend's back as she finally got her tears under control. "Welcome home, Chosen," Willow whispered as she kissed her on the head.
Tara had slipped silently from the truck bed, giving the friends and the dog a moment of privacy. "Would you like me to lift her down?" Tara asked quietly from behind Willow, who smiled and nodded.
"Thank you."
"It's my pleasure," Tara said as she gently lowered the once severely mistreated dog down to the ground of her new home, and handed the leash to Willow. "She probably could use some water, and might need to use the bathroom."
The redhead looked up from petting the dog into those mesmerizing blue eyes that were smiling down at her, and her breath caught at the true beauty she saw. She turned her head, closed her eyes and took a deep breath trying to gain control of all the emotions running through her.
"Um...oh, of course. I'll take her out back."
Willow and Xander headed toward the backyard with Chosen while Buffy hung back to wait on Tara as she closed up the truck.
"This means more to her than you know," Buffy whispered to Tara as they watched Willow go. "There's a long story there, but that's up to her to share. Maybe she'll tell you someday. I just wanted to say thank you for making my friend so happy." Tara just nodded and smiled at the sincerity of Buffy's words. The two women made their way around the house to the backyard, coming upon a scene that was one of the most comical either of them had ever witnessed.
Willow and Xander each had a clothespin firmly affixed to their noses and were wearing long yellow dishwashing gloves. Xander was attempting to hold open a plastic bag for his friend but was obviously failing in his duties. The frustration was becoming evident in the redhead's voice, which was quite nasal thanks to the clothespin.
"Xander! Just. Hold. It. Open!"
"I'm trying, but I do not want that stuff anywhere near my hands."
"For crying out loud! You're wearing gloves!" Willow yelled, beginning to gesticulate wildly with the pooper scooper, which was a very, very bad idea as the contents were threatening to go flying everywhere. Xander dropped the bag and ran for the house covering his head screaming like a little girl.
Tara glanced over at Chosen, who was lying contentedly in the shade of a tree, her head cocked to the side watching her new mom and wagging her tail.
Buffy was laughing hysterically at her friends, but still had the presence of mind to reach in her pocket for her phone and snap several priceless pictures.
Tara decided to step in, although she was watching where she stepped very carefully. She held both hands up and calmly addressed the redhead. "Willow..." she said gently, causing the redhead to turn and notice her for the first time.
"Oh shit," she said, still nasally, with her eyes as big as saucers.
"Yes...it is," the blonde chuckled at the look on Willow's face. "Stay right there and don't move."
"O...o-okay."
"Do you have a bucket? Any kind will do."
"Um...garage," the embarrassed woman said, pointing with the overflowing pooper scooper.
Tara nodded and headed to the garage, passing Buffy, who was laughing so hard she was bent over holding her stomach, but still managing to snap pictures. Tara returned shortly with the bucket and another plastic bag she had found close to it. She smiled as she got to the redhead, whose face was as red as a beet.
"Lesson #1," she said as she placed the bucket on the ground, "bag goes in bucket, another bag inside of that," explaining as she placed the bag Xander dropped inside the first. "Fold the top of the bags over the edge of the bucket." She pointed at Willow's hands holding the pooper scooper. "Hold scoop over bags in bucket and deposit offending contents inside. Tie bags closed. No fuss, no muss." She waited until Willow did as instructed, then tied the bags securely inside the bucket and carried it back over by the garage.
Willow looked up slowly from the ground she had been staring at when she saw a pair of boots enter her line of vision. Twinkling blue eyes were looking back at her.
"Welcome to the wonderful world of dog ownership," Tara said with a smile as she reached up and gently removed the clothespin from the cute, freckled nose. She wanted to kiss that nose so bad right then, she couldn't stand it. Instead she took a half step back, still smiling at the adorable woman, and held out her hands.
"Is there someplace I can wash up?"
Willow gulped and tried to get her brain and mouth to start functioning together again. "Uh...um..."
"Come on, Tara. I'll show you where it is," Buffy stepped in to rescue her friend, and led Tara inside the house. After a few deep breaths, Willow removed her gloves and looked over at the new family member, who was rolling happily in the grass. She walked over, sat on the grass, gave the dog a kiss on the head and smiled. "So worth it."

Hidden high, well out of view, a lone figure leaned back against the trunk of the tree and smiled as they settled in to keep their usual vigilant watch.

"Hey, Will, you comin' in?" Xander yelled from the new back porch.
"Be right there," she answered as she picked up Chosen's leash. "Come on, girl. Let's go see your new home."
Willow entered the house with Chosen trotting along right beside her. She took her to show her the new dog bed she bought, and the crate Xander brought, then explained to the dog that she could sleep anywhere she darn well pleased. Chosen decided the dog bed was good for now, so Willow went to wash up. When she got back to the kitchen, her two friends were there, but no Tara.
"Where'd she go? Did I scare her off already?" she asked her friends nervously.
"Not at all, cute buddy. She said she just had to run out to her truck for something," Xander explained, hugging her, "but I gotta go. I just wanted to meet your new girls," he said waggling his eyebrows, "and I highly approve of both."
"Xander!" she scolded, swatting his arm as he went out the door. "Thanks again for everything."
"Love ya, Will."
"Love you too."
She held the door open as Tara was walking up the steps at the same time. With all the hub-bub out of the way, she finally took in the appearance of the blonde -- nice, new-looking boots, snug jeans and a periwinkle polo shirt with the Rainbow Rescue logo on the left chest. Simple, but damn, she sure wore them well. The highlights in her hair sparkled in the afternoon sun and Willow stared dumbfounded for a few seconds as the blonde entered then bent over.
"Hi, again," Willow said dreamily as Tara straightened and gave her a shy smile. "Come on in the kitchen. Would you like something to drink?"
"That sounds great, thanks."
They entered the kitchen to find the slayer lying on the floor beside Chosen, showing the dog all of the pictures she had just taken, still laughing. "Isn't your mommy silly?"
"Don't mind her," Willow nodded towards her friend, "she's had one too many knocks to the head," earning a "Hey!" in protest from the Slayer still sprawled on the floor.
Tara laughed and went over to pet Chosen. "You look awfully happy there, girl. Yes, you do. I think you're gonna be just fine," she whispered to the dog and could've sworn she smiled back at her.
"Is tea okay?"
"Yes, please," Tara said as she took a seat at the large kitchen island.
"Buffy, you want some?"
"None for me, thanks. I'm gonna head over to mom's for a while before I go pa...straight home and go to bed."
"Oh...are you sure?" Willow asked, her nervousness from earlier returning at the thought of being alone with Tara.
"Absolutely," Buffy said as she stood to leave. "It was good seeing you, Tara."
"You too, Buffy. Oh, Faith says hi."
"Oh, she does? Well, tell her I said hi back," the Slayer said happily as she nearly skipped out of the kitchen to the front door.
"I'll be right back," Willow explained to Tara as she followed Buffy out.
"Buff...?"
"You're gonna be fine, Will...really. She adores you."
"How do you know?" Willow's insecurities were rearing their ugly head.
"By the way she smiles at you...like this." Buffy produced her phone, showing her the images of her and Tara as she took the clothespin off her nose. "See what I mean?"
"Oh...wow," the redhead's heart sped up at the picture of the two of them together.
"See them sparks flyin' all over the place?" Buffy teased. "Now get back in there to your girl. And don't forget -- if she stays after dark, text me and I'll swing by real quick...or, you know...she can always spend the night," the Slayer whispered in her ear as she hugged her goodbye.
"Go away, Buffy," Willow said, shooing the Slayer away, as she turned a light shade of pink. "Thanks again, and be safe."
"You too. Call me later. I want details." Before Buffy pocketed her phone, she glanced back down at the picture. <Well...huh>

Willow entered the kitchen to find Tara sitting on the floor gently petting Chosen as she lay sleeping. The sight made her heart flutter.
"Hey," she said quietly as she leaned against the door frame. Tara smiled sweetly at her as she stood up and brushed off her jeans.
"Hey."
"Are you hungry? Dinner's about ready," Willow asked as she opened the oven door and leaned over to check the chicken.
"Yes, I'm...starving," Tara said a little too breathily as she was once again presented with the sight of that cute little butt sticking up in the air.
****************************************
She walked swiftly over behind the redhead, grabbed her by the hips and pulled her back hard into her pelvis. The redhead melted back into her body, resting her head on the strong shoulder, opening herself up.
She moaned as soft kisses fluttered down the side of her neck and confident hands worked their way under her shirt and smoothly up her stomach claiming the small, firm breasts. Willow gasped and reached back, clutching the hip tighter to her as the blonde began grinding into her ass.
"What is it you want, Tara?" she whispered. "Just tell me...and it's yours."
*****************************************
"Huh?" <Oh crap. Willow was talking. What did she say?>
"I asked what kind of salad dressing you want."
Tara's mind was still having trouble focusing. "Uh...creamy...do you have creamy... Italian?" <to match my panties>
"Sure," Willow said as she leaned inside the fridge. "Creamy Italian coming right up. Where would you like to eat?"
"Huh?" the blonde asked again dumbly as she licked her lips. <Oh God that ass...and please don't say 'eat' again>
"We can eat in the dining room or eat in the living room. We can even eat out on the new porch."
<Oh My God>
"There's a table and chairs out there we can eat on, and even a big chaise lounge you can throw me down on and have me for dessert."
"What?!"
"I said, I made dessert. Do you like cream pie?"
"Uh...I need to wash up," Tara said hastily. "I'll be right back."
Willow tilted her head and watched as Tara hurried down the hall. <Damn, that girl sure can rock a pair of jeans>
Tara quickly shut and locked the bathroom door and leaned on the sink looking at herself in the mirror. "Get a grip, girl. What is wrong with you?" She splashed cold water on her face and washed her hands. After drying off, she looked back in the mirror and gave herself a stern talking to. "You can do this! Check your hormones at the door and have a nice, casual dinner with this girl you are seriously lusting after. Got that? Okay."
"I just thought we'd do it on the dining room table if that's okay with you," Willow said as Tara walked back in the kitchen.
"Uh, that's fine." Tara gulped. "I'll do it anywhere you want." <Oh hell>
Willow looked over her shoulder at the blonde as she blushed and followed her to the dining room. They took seats at the table opposite one another and Tara still hadn't looked back up at her. Tara made sure to carefully choose her words the next time she spoke, still looking down.
"This is really delicious, Willow."
"Thank you. It isn't much -- one of the few things I can make that's actually edible."
Willow noticed the signs of nervousness all too well and decided to help the blonde out, starting easy with some small talk.
"How was your trip down?"
<ohhh...edible...down...STOP IT AND GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER!>
Tara swallowed and took a long drink of water. "It was good."
"Did she do okay in the back of your truck?"
Finally getting back to a subject that steered her brain away from naughty-ville, Tara relaxed and took a breath. "She did great. I stopped once to check on her and get gas and she was sleeping like a baby."
"That's great. So she'll probably do okay going for rides in my car?"
"I assume so. She's still a little timid, so I'd suggest maybe not overdoing it with her at first. Slowly get her used to new things, small...crowds..." Tara trailed off as she felt a shy foot giving her own a gentle nudge. She looked up through her eyelashes at the smiling redhead and couldn't help but smile back.
"When did you take your boots off?" Willow asked playfully as she nudged Tara's sock-covered foot again.
The blonde cocked an eyebrow and nudged her back. "After I came back from the truck. I brought in Chosen's paperwork for you. It's on the kitchen counter."
"Oh...thank you," Willow could feel the blush rise as she remembered what she was looking at when she let Tara back in the front door and she bent over. "So, are there any other helpful instructions besides the correct way to clean up my yard?"
"Not really. There's a booklet in the folder on basic stuff. But you can call me if you have any questions at all."
"I can?" Willow asked coyly, and Tara nodded.
"Of course you can."
"What if I don't have any questions?" Willow asked as she stood and picked up the plates to take to the kitchen. She playfully swatted Tara's hands away as she tried to help her. Tara followed her into the kitchen and leaned against the counter as she watched her place the dishes in the sink and waited until she turned back around.
"You can still call," she said smiling shyly.
This was the dance...the one they both usually hated with a fiery passion...but not this time.
Willow moved slowly closing the gap, just as Chosen came over, sat down, looked up at her and whined. The girls both laughed nervously.
"You need to go outside, girl?" Willow asked her as she ruffled the blonde hair on her head. She looked back up at Tara and gently took her hand. "I guess we're moving this party outside for a bit." Willow grabbed a bag sitting beside the door before opening it and watched as Chosen moved faster than she'd ever seen her move before.
"Wow, I guess she really had to go," Willow laughed as she led them over to the chairs. They sat outside on the original concrete patio, still holding hands until Willow had to let go to open the bag. "Just some stuff I got her. I wasn't sure what she liked to play with, so..."
Tara sat wide-eyed, watching as she pulled out toy after toy for her new dog. Chosen was going to love it here.
"And last but not least..." she said as she turned to grin at the blonde, producing her new collar and leash.
"Very pretty," Tara nodded, looking into sparkling green eyes and knew her words meant so much more.
Willow finally broke the eye contact and called Chosen over. Tara helped her remove the old collar and then rubbed the dog's ears while Willow attached the new one. The redhead sat on the ground and showed the dog her new toys -- balls, squeaky toys of all kinds and chew toys.
"Which do you want, huh?" She held up the tennis ball and saw the dog's eyes light up. "Okay, then, here you go," she said as she rolled the ball just a few feet away at first. Chosen immediately retrieved it and came back to her, dropping the ball, ready to go again. They kept that up for a while, laughing at how a simple ball made the dog so happy. Finally, Chosen took a break for a drink of water then came and laid beside Willow, putting her head in her lap. Willow looked over at Tara and they shared a shy smile.
"Hey, would you like that dessert now? I could make some coffee if you want."
Tara glanced at her watch and saw that she still had plenty of time before dusk. "That sounds great."
The girls decided to eat on the new porch and relax with what time was left of their day.
"I can't believe he built this in just a few days. He did a really nice job."
"Yeah, he did, and Buffy helped with the decorating. She wanted to give it that light, island-type feel. I love it. Now when Chosen needs to go potty at night, I can sit over here while she goes down there and does her business."
Tara thought this was a little curious, that perhaps Willow knew about the evil that lurked in Sunnydale. "Yes...it's probably best not to let her wander around in the yard at night." She really didn't want anything to happen to this dog, especially after everything she'd already been through.
Willow couldn't help notice how her guest kept checking her watch and glancing outside, and thought maybe she was getting bored with her or just needed to go home.
"Um, Tara...do you have to work tomorrow?"
Tara found herself lost in thought. Just how do you go about asking someone if they know about vampires and demons without them thinking you're totally off your rocker.
"What? Oh, no. I don't go back until Monday morning. We alternate shifts, so I'll be back on days for a week."
"Well, that's good. Would you maybe want to...watch a movie or something?" she asked hopefully, but again noticed the blonde check her watch and look out at the fading daylight.
"You know, I would really like that," Tara said sincerely as she reached over and took the smaller hand in hers, "but I should probably be heading home."
"Oh, okay," Willow said, trying but failing to hide her disappointment. Tara squeezed her hand gently causing her to look up.
"I'll take a raincheck though," Tara smiled, curling that top lip up so sensually that Willow suddenly felt warm all over.
"Really?"
"Absolutely. But unfortunately, I need to go," she said as she stood up and walked into the kitchen. "I had a really nice time, Willow."
"Me too. Thanks for coming and for bringing her." They both looked over at the blonde dog, who was once again sleeping peacefully on her new dog bed.
"My pleasure...really."
Tara walked over to the sleeping dog, squatted down and gave her a tender kiss on the head. "You're a lucky girl, Chosen," she whispered to the dog, who cracked one eye open, then closed it in a wink and quickly fell back asleep. Tara sighed and stood up.
"I promise to take good care of her," Willow said as she stood watching the exchange from the doorway.
"I know you will."
"Plus, I'm working from home all week, so we'll have plenty of time for girl/girl bonding."
Tara smirked as she walked by her in search of her boots. "My favorite kind."
Willow's jaw dropped as she turned to watch the blonde bend over to pull on her boots. <Damn, she's sexy>
Willow cleared her throat as she moved to open the door for her guest. "I'll walk you out." She noted the quickly darkening sky as she slipped on her shoes and grabbed her jacket, where she always had a trusty stake hidden away.
Tara leaned with her back against her truck door as the redhead slowly stepped toward her. She was in a race with dusk and she knew it. She didn't want to leave Willow, but she had no choice. What she really wanted to do was turn her around, press her against her truck and kiss her senseless.
She was looking down, battling with her hormones again, when she saw a pair of sneakers slip between her boots and felt two small hands on her hips. She looked up shyly as Willow moved in closer between her legs.
"I know you have to go," Willow whispered, "but raincheck...soon?"
Tara's heart pounded in her chest as she brought her hands around the tiny waist and pulled her closer. She nodded mutely as she leaned forward and closed the remaining distance. She closed her eyes and felt feather soft lips pressed lightly against her own, and a fiery tingle shot quickly throughout her body. She felt the heat from the other woman pull away from her much too soon and opened her eyes to see those warm lips smiling back at her impishly.
"I'll call you," Willow said as she reluctantly pulled herself away from the soft, warm body.
Tara nodded again, then finally found her voice. "I'll be looking forward to it. Goodnight, Willow."
"Goodnight, Tara. Have a safe trip."
Willow stepped back and watched as the blonde seemed to shakily open the truck door and climb in. After closing the door and putting on her seatbelt, she started the truck and put it in reverse. Before backing away, she took one more glance up at Willow standing on her front porch giving her a cute little wave. She couldn't keep the huge smile off her face as she waved back, then slowly backed down the driveway.
As Willow watched the purple truck fade into the distance, she let out a huge sigh and sagged back against her house.
"You can come out now."
There was a soft rustling from the bushes along the side of the house, then a blonde head slowly emerged.
"I wasn't watching, I swear!" Buffy asserted, making her way up to the door.
"Liar," Willow said with a silly grin on her face.
"Well, not all of it. I closed my eyes there at the end."
"Shut up and help me inside before I fall down."
Buffy looked at her with wide eyes. "Why?"
"Because my legs feel like jello, and I think they forgot how to work."
The little blonde looked at her in shock and took her by the arm, leading her inside to the sofa.
"No way. That was like...a...a 2-second kiss!"
"Way...oh...WAY," Willow gushed, flopping back against the cushions. "And I thought you said you weren't watching?"
"Well...well," the Slayer sputtered, "someone had to have their eyes open to watch for vamps!"
"And I appreciate it, Buffy."
"I was going to ask how it went, but I don't think I need to," she smirked at her dazed friend.
"It was...nice," the redhead admitted, still smiling goofily.
"Nice, huh? Looked like more than nice to me."
"The nicest kind of nice," she explained. "I think she was even more nervous than I was, and even though we were both crazy with the nerves, it was just so...warm and...sweet."
"You make her sound like one of those big gooey cinnamon rolls."
Willow bit the inside of her lip as she thought of Tara's warm, sweet places.
"And that was our first kiss," Willow sighed again.
"First? You mean you didn't...all that time alone in the house?"
Willow shook her head slowly, still smiling. "No. But I just couldn't let her leave without feeling her lips against mine. And Oh My God, Buff...I feel like I stuck my finger in a light socket! In a good way," she clarified.
"So I take it it was good?" Buffy teased. "Well, I'm glad. I've never seen you so happy."
Willow leaned up off the back of the couch and looked her square in the eyes. "I am. So...when are you going to get with the smoochies?" Willow wiggled her eyebrows, teasing her best friend.
"Oh, God. I don't know. We're supposed to do that haunted school thing next weekend, but that's not exactly date material, ya know? Not very conducive to smoochies," Buffy pouted.
"You never know, Buff. You never know."
