Chapter 5: A little bit of conversation
Willow just stood there, for what seemed like forever and a day, but in reality, it only being a matter of two or three minutes. As soon as Tara took a step towards her though, she found her feet, turned and took off towards the truck. Completely forgetting her sister and mother, who stood at the shop they had been in watching the entire exchange.
Willow hopped into her truck, reviving the engine and squealing the tires, as she made a mad dash for her parents’ house. Once she got there she just sat back in her truck breathing heavily, finally giving into the tidal wave of emotions. Willow just clung to the wheel crying hard against it. She hadn’t been expecting to see her ever again and then the one time she comes back to Orlim shes here. What the heck.
After a few minutes she finally started to settle down, taking breaths to make her heart beat go back to the normal beat it had been.
Willow thought to herself as she climbed out of her truck.
She walked into the house and up the stairs barely seeing what was around her. Once she got to her room she feel onto her bed tears silently sliding down her face as the weight of what just happened consumed her once again, in a restless sleep.
Tiffany and Shelia got back to the house, about an hour later, after catching a ride from Tara. Upon entering the house Tiffany went to go upstairs to see how Willow was when her mother stopped her with a hand on her arm.
“Let her have her time to deal with this, this is huge for her, she needs time,” was all Sheila said as she went to sit on the couch slumping into it.
“This wasn’t how she was supposed to find out, that she was back, mom. I should have told her, I should have been the one to let her cry, into my shoulder, when she found out that she’s back”
Sheila put her hand up to silence her daughter.
“You are going through a lot yourself Tiffany; you’ve got a lot on your plate, not to mention you know how stubborn she is. She wouldn’t have believed you without seeing her for yourself. And yes this was not the best way for her to see that Tara was back, but we both know it had to happen, sooner or later,” Sheila finished pinching the bridge of her nose.
Tiffany finally sat down on the couch sighing heavily. She was worried about Willow but she knew that her mom was right. Tara was back and Willow needed to face the demons of her past, sooner or later. She just felt horrible for keeping the secret from her. Tara had been back for a while, she and Tara had become great friends actually, and all she wanted was for her redheaded twin to find her again, and fall back into love with Tara, who Tiff knew was Willow’s soul mate.
“She’s coming over tomorrow to help with the garden, maybe that’ll be a good time for them to sit down and talk to each other,” Sheila said to no one in particular.
Sheila was scared though. It had crushed Willow when Tara left with her family. It had crushed her even more when Tara had told her that they couldn’t keep being girlfriends. To tell you the truth Sheila had been pretty upset the first time she saw Tara back in town. She couldn’t believe that Tara had told Willow she would never be in Orlim again and then just like that she was back. Sheila had since gotten closer to the young blonde having her help her with her gardening. Tara was a natural at it, which was a true tribute to why the blonde had such a great business going.
Both Tiffany and Sheila sat there just starring off both in their own worlds, but both thinking about their dear Willow, and wondering what was going to happen next.
The next morning Willow woke up again to the smell of coffee. This time eggs, bacon, and she thought she smelled pancakes accompanied the coffee smell. Willow got up from bed slowly having had slept the whole day and night, being completely exhausted. Willow went to get into the shower before she went downstairs. It had been a really long time since she had a good breakfast and she loved pancakes. Something she had always blamed on one person, a person who had just seemed to walk back into her life.
Willow shook her head going into the bathroom.
Once she got out she got dressed and headed downstairs. She walked into the kitchen expecting her mother to be standing at the stove. As she looked up at the woman standing in her kitchen, her breath was once again taken away, because standing there in front of her a foot away was Tara, looking into her eyes.
“W.w.willow,” Tara cursed herself under her breath she hadn’t stuttered in years. Clearing her throat she tried again. “Hello Willow.” She smiled at the woman of her dreams hoping the redhead would stay and not run off like yesterday.
“Tara, what..why…how,” for once in Willow’s life her babble was failing her. She had so many questions, so many things to say and all she could do is stare at the woman who had been in every dream she had ever had for the last 6 years.
“Why don’t you go sit down and I’ll bring you breakfast and we can talk ok,” Tara asked hopeful.
“Ok, food and talking sounds safe and ok,” Willow turned around making Tara giggle at her brains lack of function. The sound sending Willow reeling having wanted to hear that laugh in so long, only hearing it in her head, now having it come from the person itself was surreal for her.
Willow sat down at the table and Tara quickly followed her with a cup of coffee and a plate of food, setting them down in front of Willow. She sat down across from Willow, seemingly in trance, looking at the features of the woman who had held her heart for so long. She looked amazing; Willow had grown up really well. When Tara had left Willow had been gorgeous but she was still a teen still filling in and finding her beauty. But now Willow was a woman and Tara could see that she was stunning even in shorts and a t-shirt. Willow had confidence that in high school was hidden under the heavy sweaters and long red hair. Willow had cut her hair to her shoulders but and it seemed to have a different shine to it. Tara had always loved her red hair and those green eyes still seemed to hold all the secrets and depth that Tara could find.
Tara didn’t realize that at the same time Willow was studying her through her lashes looking Tara up and down. Back in high school she had thought Tara was a goddess, but now she knew that, that had only been a short glimpse of what was to come. The Tara that sat in front of her now was so much more, that she didn’t even know if goddess covered it. She had curves in the right places her body moved like it had a confidence no one could touch. So different from the shy stuttering teen she had been.
“So…”
“I want..”
They both began at the same time blushing at each other.
Tara and Willow giggled at each other, both loving the sound after not hearing it in so long.
“You go first,” Tara said smiling at Willow melting Willow instantly.
“I don’t even know where to start Tare,” Willow said using Tara’s nickname without even thinking about it.
Tara got a tear in her eye hearing that name. She hadn’t let anyone ever call her that except for Willow. “Well how bout we start with How are you? And work our way from there?”
Willow smiled, “I’ve been ok, got my computer company up and going fairly quickly and now it’s one of the best. I live in Chicago now; I actually haven’t been back here since graduation. Came back here to help Tiff out, How bout yourself?”
“I’ve been about the same, I moved back to the states after school and went to college in Boston at Brown to become a lawyer but I dropped out. Arguing was never my best subject anyway. I then decided to come back to Illinois and went to Southern Illinois University for agriculture. Stayed down in Carbondale for a little while but about a year ago I came back to Orlim, opened my own landscaping business and have been going strong ever since. I’ve got business in towns from here to Chicago.” Tara finished quietly knowing that this might upset Willow.
“You’ve been here for a year, and you work near Chicago?”
Tara flinched at the hurt she heard in Willow’s voice knowing that she was the reason for it.
“Why didn’t you call or say you were back. You obviously remember where my family lives. Why didn’t you tell me you were back,” Willow said hurt thick in her voice.
“I..i,” Tara didn’t know where to start, “I didn’t think I had the right to tell you I was back. I didn’t think that I had the right to come back into your life like that, but when I came back I bumped into Tiffany. After a while she and I became friends and then your mom asked me to landscape her garden for her. And…”
Tara was cut off by Willow’s hand, “you and Tiff are friends, and you did the front yard. My family knew you were back and didn’t tell me either.” Willow was angry now.
“Will please don’t get mad at them. I told them not to tell you. Like I said I didn’t feel I had the right. Tiffany told me that you hadn’t been back since graduation and she didn’t think you were coming back, so I didn’t feel it was fair for me to just barge in on your life.”
“But Tara I love you…” even as it left Willow’s mouth her eyes going wide her hands flying to her mouth.
Tara was just as shocked. She still love willow too of course but she didn’t expect the woman to return the feelings. In fact she expected her to hate her.
“You love me? Still even after all I did to you?”
Willow didn’t know how to answer. She wanted to say no, she wanted to tell the woman that she didn’t mean it but she could never lie to Tara.
“Of course I still love you, you were my life, you were my soul mate.”
“Were?” This hurt Tara; past tense meant that it was gone.
“I..you left…and then you told me that you didn’t want me anymore. That you were never coming back.” Willow said a tear falling from her face.
That single tear broke Tara’s heart. All she wanted to do was take the redhead in her arms and hold her till the pain went away. Right then and there Tara made the promise, that no matter what she was going to make it up to her goddess, if Willow wanted her in her life she would be there.
“That was a lie. The not wanting you part. God Willow I wanted you, want you, so bad it’s just my father said that we weren’t coming back, like I had told you, for senior year. And I figured you would find someone else who was better and near you. I didn’t want to take that chance away from you, so I thought if I let you go then you would have the chance to find someone else.” Tara said her voice getting quiet at the thought of Willow with someone else.
“Are you fucking mad,” willow didn’t mean to be so harsh, but it hurt to know that Tara did it because she thought Willow wanted someone else. “I’ve only ever wanted you; I’ve never been on another date since.”
Right at that moment Tiffany walked down the stairs. “Tara your pancakes smell…” Tiff stopped short, seeing Willow and Tara sitting at the table tears running down their faces looking at each other. “Oh Will your up, I’ll just...”
“No stay, I’m going to leave, I have to call Rochelle and Susie today anyway, to tell them I’m gonna be a bit longer than I thought.” Willow got up and walked past Tiffany towards the living room.
“I’m so sorry Tara I didn’t mean to…” Tara got up before Tiffany could finish her statement and walked past her towards Willow.
“Will, stop please, I want to talk to your more please.” Tara caught up to Willow grabbing her elbow before she got to the stairs.
Willow twisted around looking down at the hand on her elbow feeling the electricity shoot through her arm at the contact. Wanting nothing more than to take that hand and hold it and to hold the blonde in her arms but stopping herself.
“Not now go spend time with Tiffany” Willow said hurt so thick.
“Can we have dinner or something, and talk, Will please. You deserve an explanation about everything. Please let me give you that.”
Willow shook her head, “Fine we can have dinner.”
Tara cheered a little on the inside smiling, “How’s tomorrow around 7 I can pick you up?”
“Ok that sounds like a good time, see you at 7 Tara.” Willow silently panicked inside.
She shook her head to clear her thoughts
“7 it’s a date,” Tara said shocking herself
Tara let go of Willow’s arm and Willow climbed the stairs to go take another shower this time to clear her thoughts.
