Chapter 9: Silk Shirts and Sweat Pants? Part 1.
Tara got out of the shower and dried herself off, then dried her long blonde hair with a towel. She looked around the bathroom seeing if she could find a hairdryer, but she could not find one. ‘Oh well, I’d much rather go to bed anyway then waste anymore time screwing around.’ Tara wrapped a towel around her and opened the bathroom door letting the steam from her shower escape into the cooler room, warming it up. Tara walked over to Willow’s bed where there was a magenta silk button-up shirt and a pair of gray sweat pants. Tara smiled and mused to herself, ‘Silk shirts and sweat pants, what interesting taste in night clothing, but hey I’m not picky! Hell, I’ll take anything.’ Tara slipped out of the towel she had wrapped around herself and began to dress slowly, loving the way the silk felt on her newly washed skin. While in the process of getting dressed, Tara’s stomach growled, Tara put a hand across her stomach and frowned, ‘Not tonight, I don’t want to be anymore of a bother then I already am to Willow!’ Tara looked at the silk laden bed and her frown deepened. ‘I really shouldn’t be taking her bed, it’s not fair that I should get the bed and she the couch! Maybe, just maybe, I can talk her into switching me! Hold on, just one little snag in that plan, where is the living room?’
“Knock, knock.” Tara looked at the door and smiled recognizing Willow’s voice.
“Willow, you do not have to knock after all, it is your room.”
“Yes I do, well you know just incase you are still dressing or something.” Tara blushed and went over to the door and opened it to see Willow standing there smiling with a plate full of sandwiches. Tara looked at the sandwiches then back at Willow.
“I see that you brought some food up, are you planning on bribing me?” asked Tara, Willow just smiled and walked in.
“Maybe, depends.” Tara tilted her head and looked at Willow questioningly.
“On what?”
“On whether or not you are hungry.” Willow said with a smile as she handed Tara a sandwich, which Tara took and thanked her for then ate quickly.
“So I guess you are then.” Tara looked up at Willow with her eyebrow raised a questioning look in her eyes.
“What?” Willow just shook her head and smiled.
“Hungry, duh!” Both girls broke out in a fit of giggles.
“Maybe just a little bit.” Answered Tara as her stomach growled its response. Willow handed Tara another sandwich and sat back and watched her eat it in a comfortable silence.
“Mmm, these are good!”
“Well I’d hate for you to say that they were bad.” Said Willow with a playful smile, Tara rolled her eyes and playfully shoved Willow, while she fiend an expression of hurt. Tara just smiled at Willow and then began to eat another sandwich that Willow had handed her, when she noticed that while she ate, Willow did not. Instead she just watched her and seemed satisfied with doing just that. Tara wiped her hand across her mouth to rid herself of any crumbs that may have lingered there and looked at Willow.
“Willow?” Willow’s eyes went wide when she realized that she had been caught staring at Tara.
“Um…Yeah?” asked Willow nervously, pretty sure that Tara had noticed her staring and probably was going to call her on it and cuss her out.
“How come you are not eating? I mean vampires do eat solid food as well as blood, right? Or is it just a strict blood only diet?” Willow sighed relieved that Tara hadn’t said anything about her staring and doubly relieved that Tara hadn’t cussed her out for it if she had noticed. Willow then looked at the plate that she had put the sandwiches on and thought a minute.
“Well, I haven’t actually really eaten real solid food in a long time. Not that vampires can’t, because they can, believe me they can. They can also drink juices and stuff like that, it is just we prefer blood over normal food because blood fills us faster and longer, and I am probably grossing you out aren’t I?” Willow looked up at Tara, while Tara just shook her head and smiled.
“Actually, no. This is actually very fascinating to me, I never knew that vampires could eat real food and taste it, I always thought that because you were unliving meant that your taste and everything else had left you.” Tara got quiet for a minute to process everything she had just learned, then suddenly asked excitedly,
“Hey, can you change shape too, and be like a bat or a wolf or something along those lines?” Willow raised an eyebrow and looked at Tara to see if she was being serious, when she saw she was she started to laugh. Tara looked at Willow not understanding why she was laughing.
“What?” asked Tara as Willow began to calm down, Willow looked at Tara and just grinned.
“Now I know that you watch way too many movies.” Tara looked down blushing, ‘Great.’ She thought. ‘Now she probably thinks I am a total loser for thinking like that.’ Tara blushed a deep shade of red as Willow looked her over. Willow smiled to herself, ‘Goddess she is so cute when she does that, but I would like it better if I could see her face.’ Willow reached out and tilted Tara’s chin up and smiled at her.
“It’s okay, a lot of people make that mistake, and it’s really no big deal.” Willow smiled at Tara and could tell that Tara felt a lot better. “Anyway back to what we were talking about. Normal Vampires can not change shape but, I on the other hand am not an ordinary vampire.” Tara looked at Willow confused.
“I’m sort of a Mutt.” Said Willow. “A mixture of a bunch of demons and other mystical things. Like my being able to change shape and keep most of my instincts and my brainpower, is thanks to the fact to me being a Shapeshifter.” Willow looked over at Tara and could see that she was shocked.
“What? Did you not think that me being a vampire let me have a little bit of power from each of the people I drink from or drain?” Willow smiled, then the realization of what she had just said hit her and she began to frown and looked down at her boots. Tara noticed the change in Willow’s demeanor and wondered what was wrong with her.
“Willow? Is there something wrong?” asked Tara as she placed a hand gently on Willow’s knee. Willow looked away.
“You know it’s not all that fun, being a vampire and having to drink people’s blood in order to survive. It is terrible, I hate my life now.” Willow looked up at Tara and into her eyes. She sighed, “To tell you the truth, when I didn’t have a soul I use to kill everything and anything, just for the hell of it, and I never gave a care for the people I hurt or the lives I ruined.” Willow looked back down. “Now I hunt as little as possible, even when I feel the demon inside me want to kill for fun, but I refuse to do so, because it hurts. I feel what my victims feel.” Willow turned her head away from Tara in shame. “I feel everything, their pain, their fear, their lives slip away.” Willow choked back tears and tried to continue. “And to know that I am the one that caused all of that. What disturbs me even more is when I feed on people and all I feel is, Hope, the hope that this is the end and that this is their way out of life.” Willow sighed and a tear slipped down her cheek and onto Tara’s hand. “What scares is that sometimes when I feed, I can feel the demon coming out and sometimes I am not always able to stop myself from killing my victims.” Willow put her hands over her head and whimpered, as if she had been struck by some invisible hand. Tara took Willow’s hand in hers and gently began to rub the back of her hand with her thumb.
“W-what happens if you don’t feed?” asked Tara seriously concerned for her friend, and generally curious herself.
“Ever seen a living skeleton?” Willow looked over at Tara, as she shook her head ‘no’.
“That is exactly what we are, living skeletons, except worse off. I myself get sick and weak and believe me, a sick vampire is not a happy vampire.” Willow looked at Tara surprised once again to how much concern she could feel coming off of Tara.
“When was the last time you fed?” asked Tara looking at Willow and noticing for the first time how pale Willow was.
“Umm…a little over three or four days ago.” Willow looked down at her boots suddenly finding them Very fascinating. “I was hunting last night when I came across you.” Tara stared at Willow in wonder.
“Well, how come you didn’t just feed on me then?” asked Tara, Willow looked at Tara and smiled slightly.
“Because, when I saw you sitting there, under the old oak tree petting my kitten. I just…I dunno, I just couldn’t. I felt that I had to protect you, get to know you, and I know that probably sounds pretty funky coming from a Vampire like me.”
“No, not at all! I mean maybe if you were an ordinary vampire it might, but your not, your… you!” Willow smiled and leaned over and gently kissed Tara on the cheek, causing the blonde beside her to blush and duck her head, causing a curtain of blonde hair to fall over her face. Willow grinned and tucked a piece of Tara’s hair behind her ear and smiled when she could once again see Tara’s beautiful face. Tara looked up at Willow and smiled at her.
“What was that for?” she asked, smiling.“For being, you.”
