Chapter 8
************************************************************************
Willow was bouncing on the balls of her feet as she eagerly awaited the arrival of both her best friend and Tara for the pizza party. The pizzas and sides had been ordered and while Jake was showering she had gone out for drinks buying four cases of soda. Now all she needed was for her friends to turn up.
“Hey Will, have the gang turned up yet?” Jake entered the living room in jeans and a mash top sweater watching his sister amusedly as every five seconds she kept looking out the window to see if Tara and Faith or Buffy and Dawn or Xander, whom she had phoned earlier, were coming.
“No, not yet,” she sighed, as Jake joined her by the window; putting a comforting arm round her shoulders.
“She’ll come Will, there’s no way that Tara can possibly resist you.” Jake said lovingly, knowing who Willow really wanted to see at the party.
**************************************************
A half hour later the pizza arrived with Xander following close behind.
“I hope you ordered a pepperoni with extra mushrooms for me,” The young dark haired man said as he entered to hugs from the siblings.
“Don’t worry dude, we got your favourite,” Jake told him with a smirk and the two took the pizza boxes took the couch, placing them on the coffee table while Willow remained by the window keeping a watchful eye out.
A few minutes later her vigilance was rewarded when she saw two familiar figures, one with blonde hair and the other with dark, crossing the road to their home. Willow ran to the front door with a smile so bright it could have lit up the darkest night.
“Hi Tara, Faith..., Tara you’ve arrived,” she said breathlessly, a huge smile spread right across her face. While she addressed both girls her green eyes could only see Tara’s blue. A stare that Tara reciprocated while Faith just watched the two with a knowing smirk.
Yeah T, I knew you had it bad.
“Hey Red, any chance we could come in at all?” Faith asked with a smirk as she saw the loving look that the two girls were giving each other.
“Uh, what...oh yeah please come in,” The redhead said in reply standing to one side granting Faith and Tara entry. “Umm would you like a soda, not that you necessarily have to have a soda, we have other things to drink. There are a couple of my dad’s beers in the fridge as well as orange juice, my mom left some chamomile tea and coffee.” She babbled, nervously blushing when Tara started to giggle and Faith laughed out loud.
She is so adorable when she does that, thought the statuesque blonde as she gazed at the smaller redhead, drinking in every small part of her that she could. The light spattering of freckles that dotted her face, the green eyes that reminded Tara of trees and their canopy of leaves, her fiery red hair that bought to mind the many sunsets she had been witness to, both at home and on vacation. While her clothing, a sweater with a design of two cartoon rabbits kissing and jeans with a heart design on the rear pocket, just increased Tara’s belief that she was the most adorable being in the entire universe.
“I’ll have a soda please, a root beer if you have it.”
Faith’s smirk grew as she watched her sister staring at Willow, practically drooling at the mouth over the redhead. “I’ll have a beer Red, ya got some right?”
“Yeah sure, we have a couple of bottles of Bud in the fridge. I’ll grab you one!” Willow headed to the kitchen to retrieve the drinks and on her return she saw that Faith and Tara were going through the music collection.
“Wow, this is some shit music ya got here,” Faith said scornfully about the cd collection which wasn’t necessarily untrue, as most of the discs were either classical music or prayers and hymns in Hebrew.
“Oh yeah... sorry, I left my CDs upstairs. I’ll run and grab em.” And with that Willow disappeared up the stairs. She quickly returned with a dozen discs in plastic sleeves, all mix albums that she had compiled herself from her laptop. Faith had joined the boys on the couch eating pizza and chatting about anything.
“So which one do you want to listen to first?” Willow asked as she proffered the sleeves to Tara who readily took them and looked at the track listings; finally deciding on a club and dance mix album.
“Can we have this one please?” Tara asked, showing it to the redhead.
“Sure, no problemo,” Willow replied as she switched the stereo unit on and set it to the cd before sliding the disc into the tray. Within a few seconds ‘Ride on Time’ by Black Box started from the speakers.
**********************************************
Jake, Faith and Xander were chatting about video games, debating the pros and cons of the various video game consoles while Willow and Tara were swaying in a corner to some music playing on the stereo when the door bell rang again. Jake was about to get up when he saw Willow go to answer it.
“Buffy, Dawnie!” She squealed out excitedly as she saw the petite blonde and her younger sister there.
“Hey Wills!” Buffy called out as she entered the Rosenberg’s front door. “I’ve missed you so much,” She declared, giving the redhead a huge bone-crushing hug. Something Tara couldn’t fail to observe as she stood quietly in the corner.
Oh, I guess she already has a girlfriend then,Tara thought sadly as she observed the two friends greeting each other. Well the least I can be is a friend to Willow. Who knows, maybe she has a friend who’s single.
“Hi Willow, is Jake here?” Dawn asked forcing her way in between Buffy and Willow getting a big hug from her friend and an annoyed glare from her sister.
“He’s right over there sweetie,” Willow indicated where Jake sat chatting with Xander on the couch. “Oh and there’s soda’s in the kitchen if you want one.”
As Dawn went to join Jake and Xander on the couch, Faith noticed how her sister’s face had fallen, so she went to join her in the hopes she could improve Tara’s mood.
“Hey T, you ok? Ya don’t look to good.”
Tara looked up as her sister joined her.
“Yeah I’m fine Faith, but I think that Willow has someone already.”
“Oh yeah, who?”
“The blonde who’s just arrived, she gave Willow a big kiss on the cheek as she came in.”
Faith observed the perky blonde girl and the younger dark-haired girl, who was obviously looking for another party attendant. Within seconds the younger girl spotted Jake and quickly went over to where he sat chatting with Xander.
“I’ll say this for Red, if that’s her girl she has good taste.”
The blonde glared at her sibling, “Not helping Faith.”
“Sorry, just sayin’ that’s all.”
Tara suddenly noticed that Willow was bringing the blonde girl over to them.
“Hey Tara, Faith I want you to meet my best friend Buffy Summers. Buffy these are our new friends and neighbours Faith and Tara Maclay.”
Buffy looked between the two girls thinking how little alike they were forgetting the disparity between herself and Dawn.
“Yo B, you ok,” Faith inquired after the slim blonde had been staring at the two girls for several moments.
“What, oh yeah sorry, it’s just that Willow said you were sisters but you look nothing alike.” She said in confusion.
The siblings grinned at this and shared a look and a knowing grin.
“It’s ok we get it all the time,” Tara said.
“Fact is, we ain’t really sisters,” Faith continued. “I’m actually adopted by T’s family.”
Tara nodded in affirmation as she took over the story. “It was when I was about ten, until then I had been an only child, there’d been some kind of complications with my birth so mom couldn’t have any other kids. It didn’t bother me at first, but then it seemed like all the other kids in school had brothers or sisters or spoke about them. I asked my parents and they told me the story of my complicated birth, so I asked if they could buy me a brother or sister.” She grinned at the memory of this while Willow’s head was filled with images of young Tara attempting to purchase a child from a Wal-Mart’.
“So eventually they decided to try and adopt a sister for me. I was hoping for a little sister so I could dress her up like a fairy tale princess, but instead I get this.” Tara motioned with her thumb in Faith’s direction. She rolled her eyes exaggeratedly as a tiny grin tugged at the corners of her mouth.
Faith turned, “Hey, standing right here,” she said with an ‘I can’t believe you just said that’ look on her face; causing Tara to giggle.”
“Awww sweetie, you know I love you...really,” Tara replied and she wrapped her arms round Faith giving her a quick hug. “Am I forgiven,” she asked sweetly, fluttering her eyelashes. All the dark haired girl could do was laugh at her sister’s attempt to make up to her.
Faith looked at her, an expression of faux suspicion in her eyes. “Two weeks worth of chores,” she said decisively.
“Two no way!” Tara scoffed at the offer. “One week,” she offered.
“How about a month?” Faith replied, smirking as the blondes eyes went wide in shock.”
“You are such a meanie!” Tara said, scowling at Faith.”
“It is said to be one of my better aspects,” Faith said proudly, as her smirk grew wider. “So what’s the word Tare...a fortnight, or a month?”
“Fine,” Tara huffed folding her arms across her chest, “Two weeks worth of chores, but no desserts.”
“That’s my girl,” Faith said as she placed her arm round Tara’s shoulders. The blonde made an unhappy face while Willow and Buffy could only giggle at the antics of the adopted sisters.
“Can I get back to the story now?” Tara inquired wryly. She appeared serious, but, there was only lightness in her voice and her eyes sparkled with merriment.
“So anyway, one day my parents came home with Faith,” She continued, “And at first we didn’t get along at all.”
“Oh Jeez no, it was basically dislike at first sight,” Faith interrupted, grinning while earning herself a glare from Tara. “Though that said it was mostly my fault,” Faith continued sobering a little. “I didn’t really give T a chance though; I was just determined to dislike anyone. I even started a few fights between T and myself just for the fun of it.”
“Don’t believe her you guys. Whilst it’s true that she would start fights between us, it would take her a long time before she really pissed me off, plus I would fight back. If she ever tried to pick a fight I’d just lock myself in my room till it was safe to come out again.” Here Faith was full of remorse and it was obvious from her expression that she regretted having hurt her sister before.
“Ya see one of the things ya gotta realize is there are a lot of people out there who don’t give a shit about orphanage kids like me,” Faith continued her voice laced with a mixture of bitterness and sadness. “They might want to foster you for a coupl’a months but when it comes to long term, well they’re only interested if you match up to their high standards. If you don’t then it’s just tough.” Her face darkened considerably as she had revealed more of her background than she had possibly intended. A mixture of emotions passed across her face and her whole body became tense. Tara noticed and immediately wrapped her arms round her adopted sister’s shoulders in a loving embrace.
“You ok Faith?” She asked softly, her gentle voice suffused with love.
Faith turned to her with a wry smile.
“Yeah, I’ll be ok, just some bad memories coming back that I really didn’t want.” Though she sounded brave, only Tara saw the tears that Faith was fighting to control.
“Yo Red, is it ok if I use your bathroom?” The dark haired girl asked, eyes shining with unshed tears.
“Er, sure, up the stairs. It’s the first door on the right,” Willow replied concerned that she or Buffy might have said something that had upset Faith.
“Will she be alright?” Buffy asked equally anxious that she had said something wrong.
Tara was gazing up the stairs where her ‘sister’ had gone just a moment before. However, unlike her two new friends, she was calm and untroubled; though there appeared to be a trace of sadness in her eyes.
“Yeah, she’ll be fine she just gets upset when she talks about her past. She had a really shitty time of it when she was younger. At one time she couldn’t speak about it without breaking down completely. She’s a lot better nowadays, but there’s still a lot of pain there.” As she spoke Tara, kept her attention on the upstairs where her sister had just gone
“So you were saying that she tried to pick fights with you, but didn’t your parents ever try to stop her?” Buffy asked, completely bewildered by what she was hearing.”
“Well, at first mom tried to keep us separate and it helped that I hid myself away, but dad said not too interfere. You see Buffy, you have to remember that Faith and I are army brats and he wanted us to be able to defend ourselves. As I say, it took a lot for Faith to get me pissed but he was on hand to make sure things didn’t get too much outta hand; he didn’t want his beloved daughters killing each other.”
“But you both appear to be so friendly now. What caused the change?” Willow asked.
“Well as I said we’re coupla army brats, but on an army base there aren’t any schools because of possible terror attacks, so we went to a local school off base.”
“Now see this was where I discovered a whole new side to T,” Tara rolled her eyes as Faith returned and once again took over the narrative, “See Tara here is a better student than I am. She get’s all the ‘A’s while I tend to get ‘C’s and‘F’s, so I told her that I thought she was boring. T said she wasn’t and we ended up arguing for a bit over it till I told her to prove it. So she says ok, and tells me to give her a dare to prove that she isn’t boring. I say ok, you have to run around the quad naked at lunch.”
Both Willow’s and Buffy’s eyebrows were raised at this while a slight smile tugged at the sides of the redhead’s mouth as she pictured Tara running around in her birthday suit. The more that picture stayed in her mind the bigger the smile got until a big goofy grin stretched across her face. She would have stayed like that for the rest of the evening if Buffy hadn’t elbowed her in the ribs.
“Huh? Wha...? Who the wha?” she mumbled as she was distracted from her revealing daydream. Willow looked around to see smirks on the faces of her best friend as well as Faith and Tara.
“Earth to Willow, you awake now?” Buffy grinned at her friend’s dazed expression.
“Buffy, what did you do that for?” Willow asked in annoyance, her brows knitted in frustration. She turned to Buffy excitedly; Faith and Tara forgotten. “I was having the most amazing daydream where Tara was running around and she was completely naked and...”
Willow was interrupted by a little cough and she turned to see her forgotten guests standing before her both with huge smirks on their faces. Willow immediately turned red as a tomato when she realized her mistake.
At least I know she’s interested in me, Tara thought as she gave the redhead a broad wink; making Willow blush even more and got giggles from both Buffy and Faith.
“Oh my god you must think I’m such a perve! Thinking about you like that... not that you’re not worth thinking about with all the curves and the boobs and oh jeez I promise you I’m not usually like this, but you’re just so beautiful and wow what a body and I’m just gonna shut up now before I embarrass myself anymore than I already have,” she said sheepishly.
As Willow had gone on with her babble, the Maclay sister’s eyes widened in disbelief; amazed that Willow’s small body could apparently hold so much oxygen.
“We got suspended for a day, Mom and Dad were called in for a meeting with the principal. The best thing is that me and Tare here realized that we didn’t need to be fighting each other any more, so we called a truce and we’ve been best friends ever since!”
“To be honest I really didn’t like the suspension,” Tara said with a wry smile at her adopted sister’s excitement regarding the punishment, “I actually kinda like school, especially English and music.”
“You do!” Willow said, her smile growing so bright it could have outshone the sun. “Me too, maybe we could be study buddies?”
“Yeah, I’d like that a lot,” Tara replied her own smile growing wider while Buffy and Faith shared a knowing look.
************************************************
Meanwhile on the other side of the room Jake, Dawn and Xander were chatting; or rather Dawn and Xander were chatting while Jake was essentially drooling over Tara. This had not bypassed Dawn’s attention and she wasn’t best pleased about it so she decided to drag Jake into a conversation whether he liked it or not.
"Hey Jake, who are the two new girls talking with Buffy and Willow?"
“That’s Faith and Tara, new neighbours from across the way.” Jake replied, glancing at Dawn and suitably distracted from staring at Tara. “Tara’s the blonde and Faith’s her sister.”
“That Tara looks pretty hot.” Xander commented, “And her sister doesn’t look too bad either.”
“Yeah I actually have a bet going on with Willow for Tara,” Jake told his two friends, “I think she’s straight, Will says she’s gay. There’s twenty bucks and a weeks worth of chores on the line here.”
“Well I say go for it buddy, it’s about time one of us saw some action,” Xander said, giving his friend a pat on the shoulder.
“I don’t know, neither one of them looks like anything special to me,” Dawn sneered.
“You would say that, you’re a girl who likes boys, not a girl who likes girls. As Willows bro I have an insight into hot chicks, and those girls are definitely of the hot.
“Does anyone want another drink?” Willow asked.
“Could I have another root beer please?” Tara asked, holding up her empty can.
“Same here Wills,” Buffy called from where she stood standing by the stereo chatting with Faith and looking through Willow’s c.d.s
Suddenly Jake had an idea for out-manoeuvring his sister and getting the first date with Tara.
“Yo, Will same here,” he said, wiggling his can in the air to catch his sibling’s attention. Willow’s response to this was to roll her eyes. “And can I have some Cheetos too?” He asked cheerfully, before turning his gaze back to Dawn.
“Would you like a hand?” Tara asked as she saw the redhead scowling at Jake while shaking her head in annoyance her brother. Willow turned back to the blonde and her face resumed its usual happy appearance.
“No thanks, I’ll be fine, just give me a moment and I’ll be right back,” she replied smilingly before heading to the kitchen.
“Ok guys, here I go with ‘Operation Date Tara,’ phase 1, wish me luck.” With that Jake quickly headed to intercept Tara before she got to Faith and Buffy.
“Hey Tara, I was just wondering if you fancied going to see a movie tomorrow? We could get some pizza beforehand as well, you know...if you wanted.” Jake said, doing his best to turn on the charm.
Ok so far so good, all she has to do is say yes Jake thought as he stood there looking at Tara keeping his face pleasant while in his mind he was already doing a happy dance; absolutely sure that the girl would say yes.
Then it happened, the one thing that he hadn’t anticipated happening, the one thing that he hadn’t made an allowance for.
“If you guys are going to the movies, can I come along?” Dawn interjected, looking up at them from her place on the couch; eyes wide open with anticipation.
“Who’s going to the movies?” Willow’s soft voice cafe from the kitchen doorway as she re-appeared with two cans of root beer in one hand while the other hand held both a third can and a big bag of Cheetos.
“Jake just invited me out to a movie tomorrow,” Tara informed her, “And Dawn was just wondering if she could join us.
“Oh, so Jake invited you out did he now,” Willow said amicably, enough though already she was scheming in her head to ruin her brother’s chances with the girl of her dreams.
“Yeah and there’s gonna be pizza too!” Xander crowed.
“You know it sounds like such a good idea I think we should all go together. We can choose a movie and then go for a Chinese afterwards.”
Jake’s smile of hope became a rictus grin as he knew that he had been screwed out of a possible first date with Tara and chance to win the bet. The grin stretched even wider as all assembled in the room agreed to go out together the following evening. However, none of them noticed the scowl that Dawn was directing towards Tara.

. Thanks for the feedback.
and welcome to the story. The bet will definitely land Willow in deep trouble with Tara once she finds out. Glad you like the interaction of the Maclay’s, I’d always wanted to give Tara a happy family life and have Faith as her sister because there are so many stories where Faith and Tara get are best friends so to me it seemed a natural progression. You’re right to a point that they never had family support on the show, especially Tara, but they did have the support of their friends, Buffy, Dawn, Xander, Anya and Giles. Thanks for the feedback. :
