I think the dialogue from Willow's "date" (ugh) with "she who must not be named" (blech, yuck) in "the season we do not speak of" (facepalm) served to underline this.

This one is a bit more philosophical. I think both have a lot of trouble with self love. Its not non existent when they are alone, they do hold some self worth however when they combine and they are together they nurture each other and in helping one another they help themselves in learning to love themselves.

Willow tried to have it all (resurrect Buffy, brambles lethed Tara to stop the arguing) and she lost it all.
Tara tried to have that loving relationship and family with the Scoobies but with everything going on it all crumbled and she lost it all.

We got to see Willows reaction and she really did lose all self love. We didn't get to see Tara and when we did she was always helping someone else, deflection perhaps (poor story writers, not wanting to give Tara a storyline of her own if it doesn't aid Willows story arc). I don't think there's any doubt she would have lost some self love after having her mind manipulated for a third time (Father, Glory, Willow).

During this time I don't think they were ever truly apart so they were not alone.

They both have to work to find the girl they once knew. When they do there's always magic.
