Buffy RPG: Eden to Aid Tsunami victims

Postby WebWarlock » Thu May 16, 2002 9:28 am

Hey everyone.

I just got permission to share this all with you.

The character sheet of Willow from Season 5 is now up on Eden's website for you to enjoy and remember better days.

www.btvsrpg.com/willow.pdf and www.btvsrpg.com/tara.pdf

The Buffy Game itself is at www.btvsrpg.com/

There is also a direct link at www.btvsrpg.com/support.htm

I was one of the writers for this game. I put my heart and soul into everything I did. But now that heart ans soul is gone, so I stopped.

Tara is in the book as well. And I am certain that no one here will be disapointed in they way our girls are presented. I made sure of that myself.

Also, this game is made by people that agree with us. Your dollar supports them.

Willow and Tara can live forever thanks to Eden.

UPDATE: Willow was posted a few days ago. She is still there.

Now she is joined by Tara. Both can be downloaded from the site listed above.

Eden should be thanked for showing their support for all W/T fans and shippers.

They guys and gals at Eden are really great people and it has been my pleasure to have worked with them on this.

I am sure I made more than a few of them W/T shippers.

There is a Magic Book coming out next year. I am doing what I can on that one as well. Plus I also wrote a W/T centric adventure for them. When I can, I'll share that as well.

Sounds really good...Eden looks like a good outfit. Personally, I'm a big fan of WhiteWolf's Vampire: The Masquerade...which has taken on a whole new vicarious thrill when me and my coterie wiped out a pack of hunters lead by a sanctimonious twit...

Seriously, though, I'd support Eden in a heartbeat. Looks very well done, you should be proud.

Well if you like White Wolf you should love Eden.

I have been playing a Willow & Tara based "WitchCraft RPG" game for over a year now and it has been some of the best roleplaying fun I have had since the 80's. Here is a bit on that game, www.xtreme-gaming.com/the...e/cur.php.

WitchCraft and Buffy both use the Unisystem game rules, so transfer is really easy.

Here are the stats I wrote for the girls, end of season 5, almost a year ago. www.xtreme-gaming.com/the...stats.php. They are really close to what Eden (CJ Carella) came up with.

Once I round up some good old fashioned gamer geeks I plan to redo Season 6 using these rules. Sure will be a helluva lot more fun than watching season 6.

Really looking forwards to Eden's game. Replaying Season 6 sounds like a lot of fun.

The Buffy board game is like that in our household. It plays like an ep of Season 4. The Scoobs have to work together or they're toast. Buffy's the fighter, but if Willow is lost early, again the Scoobs are toast. And, each time we play, Willow gets to meet Tara, again and again...

More Updates!!

Well the Buffy RPG is still a month away, but we have been given a teaser by Eden via Games Unplugged magazine.

The first OFFICIAL "Buffy RPG" product is now out, is the first adventure/episode "The Dark Druid"! Written by none other than the Kitten's own Web Warlock! (uh, that is me for those keeping track at home.)

"The Dark Druid" has a lot of things going for it.

First it is the only official Buffy adventure to date, and the only Buffy RPG product in the stores now.

Secondly, the focus of the story is Willow and Tara! Willow and Tara are the key elements in this piece. Course you can play it with out them or even your own characters, but here is what I said about that,

Quote:
Fionn (an important secondary character) trusts the girls implicitly. He shows them great love and respect.

And thirdly, there is NO SPIKE in this one! Yup here is what I say about that too,

Quote:
Fionn sees the vamp for what he is. Best not use him in this adventure.

Eden, the producers of the Buffy RPG, is giving us the Willow/Tara love! You can get their character sheets from their site or mine and now we have the Dark Druid! (yes it is based on the fan fic I wrote here over the winter.)

I did not have the room for a dedication (or even a little pithy 'about the author' bit) so here is the author's dedication that would have been included with the adventure.

This work is dedicated to the wonderful people at The Kitten The Witches and the Bad Wardrobe. They are the ones that showed me that Willow and Tara were more than just TV characters, they were something special and they live for real in our hearts.

Out of all the Buffy related boards on the net, the Kitten is considered to be the best by most of Eden's writters.

They have said it before, but it bares repeating; "Willow and Tara are alive and well and together at Eden."

Who needs TV? Not me, I got dice.

Here are some sites to check out for this,

Re: The Buffy RPG from Eden UPDATED

Postby WebWarlock » Sat Jul 13, 2002 8:38 pm

Well it is like this.

Eden is well known for their "Witchcraft RPG". A game in which people play witches, witch hunters, normal humans (mundanes) or various supernatural critters.

www.xtreme-gaming.com/the...tchrpg.php

So on the Witchcraft RPG list Willow and Tara came up a lot. Wednesday was Buffy recap day. We would all talk about it and analyze the spells Willow was doing. Then when Tara came along we talked about her too. We all love witches there, and Willow and Tara are our favorites.

So it is really no surprise that Willow and Tara also became the favorites in the Buffy game (which uses the same rules as Witchcraft RPG).

That is one of the reasons why Willow and Tara are the only characters you can see on their site. www.btvsrpg.com/support.htm

Plus Willow and Tara fit so well in Eden's world.

When I first discovered the Witchcraft RPG I need a new scenario to play. At the time I was also reading "Coming Up Roses" on the web. Well I created some Willow and Tara characters and started to play my own version of "CUR". My god! That was the most fun I have had since I started playing D&D back in the late 70's!!!

The Willow/Tara section of my website began as a way just to talk about my CUR based Witchcraft RPG game.

www.xtreme-gaming.com/the...de/cur.php

Talking the authors of CUR is what sent me here to the Kitten in the first place. So, to me, Eden, CUR, Witchcraft, Willow and Tara are all mixed in the same batch.

Having Tara still alive is just an application of what is known in RPGs as Rule 0. Which basically says, "if you don't like it, change it."

I played a game in which Giles was killed by Angel instead of Jenny. Resulting from this, Buffy got careless and was killed in season three leaving Faith and Wesley. Willow and Tara still got together of course, but things in the world were different.

CJ, the author of the Buffy and Witchcraft RPGs, played a game in which everyone died at the end of S5 cause Glory won. Only Xander was left alive and he is nuts. He also played one in which Angel killed Buffy at the end of S2, but didn't end the world.

I know some other guy that is playing the Slayer for the 70's in New York. I have played in 2005. So you can do anything you want.

But Eden is very supportive of the Willow and Tara fans.

Here are their EXACT words from their June 2002 newletter, Whispers.

Quote:
May saw the posting of the approved Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG character sheet in all its glory at http://www.btvsrpg.com. As an extra special treat in light of the monumental events of this season’s Buffy episodes, we also posted the Season Five version of Willow’s and Tara’s character sheets. A tribute to two of our favorite characters . . .

I say why watch the show, when you can "be" Willow or Tara!

Take you favorite Pens fan fic and make it into an adventure outline. I mean really, reading "Answering Darkness" was great, but wouldn't playing it or living it be cooler?

If you plan to role-play "Final Exam" though you are on your own! :lol

Buffy RPG Review

Postby Garner » Mon Jul 22, 2002 5:21 pm

Hey all. Instead of going to see Amber in Toronto, I ended up at a large gaming convention trade show (Origins) where I played in a demo of the Buffy RPG. Yes, I know I am a total gaming geek, but it is also part of my job since I work at a gaming/comic store, and hence was a great write off.

Anyway, the book for the game is very nicely done. It covers up through Season 5 and has pictures from each of the seasons. They have character stats for all of the scoobies including Tara! That was nice to see.

Overall the game is very simple. You roll a ten sided die (d10 in gaming terms) and add a stat (something like strength or dexterity or such) and a skill (something like occult, martial arts or Getting Medeival for swords and stuff) to get a final number. You are trying to either exceed 9, or a similar number generated by the target (say their d10, dexterity and dodge) with the higher succeeding. There is a small chart that shows how well you did when you exceed 9. It's on the character sheet and easy to reference. That's about all to the basic system. You have Hit Points, and if you go below zero you generally go unconscious and may die.

The only other system point is that there are drama points. You generaly start with 10 of these, and you spend them to do neat things like in the show. They basically add 10 to any die roll or damage. So if Willow wants to remember that obscure spell, she blows a drama point and probably will. Or if Buffy wants to nail a vamp in one shot, she might blow the point for damage. It makes the characters able to exceed normal life and act dramatically when they really need to, just like in the show.

I ended up playing Riley (hey, I like Riley!) and so did not get to see exactly how the magic section worked. I do know that the person playing Willow was able to TK people around at some cost and using drama points to make sure it was very effective. It seemed to fit into the game as a whole.

You also do not have to play just the show's characters. You can generate other slayers, watchers or your own scooby gang, set in the past, future or an alternate world. They do have all of the villains stats as well, so you could still have Spike and Dru show up if you wanted to. Spike is very tough incendentally, about on the par with Buffy.

Overall, the game is fun and fast flowing. If you like the universe (or did at least) and know the characters it can be a great time. I recommend it more as something to do at a convention or something like that than as a campaign, but either way will work. Even if you don't like role playing games, the core book is interesting in and of itself with some neat pictures from the show and is worth a look at the very least.

Hey that is a good point.

Who here is going to GenCon? I was going to, but with just starting teaching and all it would be difficult.

Some of the most surprising emails I have been getting are gamer geeks (like me) expressing their love of Willow and Tara. Yes kittens, even geeky, white het guys get it. Why can't the supposedly "brilliant" writers at ME?

Maybe some of those "limited edition" Kitten shirts they are talking about in the SD Comics Con would be a good idea.

Hey. Any Kitten going to Gen Con. Go to the Eden booth and THANK them for supporting Willow and Tara!

I have something in the make now that further shares the Willow and Tara love with the Kitten and the gamer comunity. More later.

Ah, I wish I was going to GenCon this year, I've been the last 5 or so, but someone has to cover the store while everyone else goes.

If you get the chance to try a demo of the game you should be all means do so. The people running it at Origins did a great job and were all into the show, if not W/T specifically.

I think that anything that can widen the outrage over what happened is worthwhile and should be encouraged. The more voices in protest the better chance of something being done. Or we'll just succeed in annoying Joss and ME, and right now I'll even take that!

And yes he is in his 40s not 30s. Unless of course he was only 10 when he lived in Chicago and was on the stage of the Steppenwolf.

GenConUK might have some ME people. I think Christopher Golden is going to be there and they will be during the UK release of the Buffy game.

I really want to get involved in a demo of the Buufy RPG.

Looking at GenCon's website, it doesn't seem that anyone from ME is an invited guest. However, the website really sucks this year and it's very hard to tell what is actually scheduled to occur.

(If the moderators wish, I can take the rest of this to the Kitten Meeting thread.) I'll be fairly busy at GenCon. I'm helping judge their miniature painting contest, and playing in a day-long Warhammer 40K tournament. Still, it would be great to hang with any other Kittens attending the con. Supper, anyone?

When exactly in August is the corebook coming out? The webpage doesn't say and I don't have time to be making multiple trips to the gaming store. I already have enough trouble explaining to my gamer friends tha I am getting a Buffy rpg made by the people who made Witchcraft (which they didn't like). They just don't get it could be the worst system in the world but Tara is in it, so I dont care. :)

The website has not been updated because everyone is at Gen Con.

Yes Tara is in it! She is featured rather well in fact in the chapter on Drama. Willow is featured in the chapter on magic.

In the book, both girls are alive and well and YOU CAN KEEP THEM THAT WAY!

I'll have some more information and a Kitten Board exclusive very soon!

Kitten Board Exclusive

Postby WebWarlock » Thu Aug 08, 2002 10:13 pm

Sorry for the double post.

But I wanted to let everyone know about the Kitten Board Exclusive.

Right now there are only 3 Buffy adventures to play out there.

The first, The Dark Druid, was published in Games Unplugged.

The second, was relaesed today with the Core Rulebook.

The third is special.

The third, The Dragon and the Phoenix, is now posted at the Pens Board!

What do the first and the third have in comon?

Well both were written by me.

Both have very strong Willow/Tara points of view. Actually TDaTP is hardcore Willow and Tara.

And the Kitten is the only "Buffy:-related posting board, website or anything that has this or anything else for the new Buffy RPG.

In the words of one Eden staffer (who wishes to reamin nameless) "don't watch TV. Get some dice and keep Willow and Tara happy and together forever!"

Question?

Postby chelehel74 » Thu Aug 08, 2002 11:03 pm

Warlock -

I used to play Vampire back in college but thanks to work, life and friends who don't play I've been sadly out of the RPG world other than what Playstation 2 has to offer.

I was wondering has there ever been any thought to a round or two of Buffy RPG (once it's all released) in web chat situation.

Like I said I've been out of the RPG world for so long but if you can have messages boards like this one why not a big kitten round of RPG once the game launches.

Might mean fighting over certain characters but could be a great time.

I had not thought about doin it for Buffy.

At the risk of sounding like the Devil himslef, of late I am either playing RPGs or writting them. I rarely get to do both.

Look for this in your game stores on Monday after Gen Con. Of course if anyone is going to Gen Con (then they are already there) you can pick it up there.

Buffy RPG

Postby Garner » Fri Aug 09, 2002 1:39 pm

The Buffy RPG should be an easy one to do over a chat room or message board as the system is pretty simple and the amount of dice rolling can easily be kept to a minimum. It basically uses just one ten sided die and that's it! Those who played Vampire or any of the World of Darkness stuff should find Buffy a lot easier and still heavy on roleplaying.

Unfortunately I think WW is off on the release. I believe distributors are getting it Monday, and most stores should have it by Weds to Friday next week. At least that is the word from our distributors.

I have also been told that there is a limited edition version that is available only at cons or online that is like $60 and has one of those leather style covers with the Buffy logo on it. You probably can check it out at the Eden site.

The game is great and you should definitely give the adventure on the Pens a look over.

Re: Buffy RPG

Postby jraff » Fri Aug 09, 2002 8:38 pm

Ok, this is for WebWarlock, and any other that had the chance to take a look at the game...

I've been playing rpgs for a long time, mainly WoD, and then some 3ed DnD. I'm currently involved in a "normal" game, an "asian settings" one, and another test one with charcters at Epic level (to try out the new rules set for d20 in the epic level book).

I'm a big fan of d20 , in fact, I do believe it's the best rpg system created so far, because it's very simple, but allows for extraordinary complexity/customisation, both in character creation, and actual roleplay.

So, my question is, will I have any fun playing the BtVS rpg? I mean, sure, the buffyverse is cool, and i can imagine roleplaying in it; but, the interview with Alex Jurkat made me feel a litle... scared about the rpg.

Because it all sounds very... rpg for dummies, you know? Kinda like pokemon was for magic: a good way to get new players in the field, but of not much interest for veteran/mature players due to the oversimplified mechanics.

What's your take on that?

JRaff,

I develop primarily for d20. Liber Mysterium is a D20 Witches book. That is what I do (did) at Shadow-Earth Games. I have played every version of D&D since the white boxes. And I can tell you this without reservation.

I love Unisystem. Unisystem is the game mechanics behind "Buffy" and Eden's other game lines.

Buffy is easy to learn, think of it as "d10" almost. Much easier than Vampire or other White Wolf offerings.

Yes, it does use a trimmed down verison of Unisystem. But like all games you can make it as complex or as easy as you like. The rules rarely get in the way of play and the play is designed to be fast and fun. The mechanics are easy, but the core book is very rich in ways to apply those mechanics. I put it on par with D20.

I have been playing for 23 years. I have book cases full of games. But this one is fun, and I am having a blast.

I posted an adventure in Pens, The Dragon and the Phoenix, this will give you an idea of what the game play is like. Granted this one is a simple one to get people into playing, and it is geared towards this audience, people that may never have played before.

But all the developers were like me, 30-something white guys that have been playing various games for 20+ years. Oddly enough there were a lot of Willow and Tara fans there!

Garner: What do you mena not out, I got mine! ;)

Actually people are getting it at GenCon now as well.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm another long time gamer who was shying away from the Buffy game after shelling out lots of money for other TV-based games that turned out to be too simplistic and not much fun. :(

I'm going to take a chance on this one though, just because playing in this world sounds like too much fun to pass up! :)

Re: Buffy RPG

I've also been playing games for about 28 years or so, since Chainmail and the conversion to true Roleplaying with the original D&D stuff. I actually got to play the Buffy game at Origins and helped WW write some of the adventure posted. I can definitely say that the Buffy game is a blast and lots of fun. I can recall some gamers saying when White Wolf came out that their system was too simplistic and easy. In the long run the Buffy system is easy, but not simplistic. It concentrates attention on the roleplaying aspects while the rules hlep the flow of the game and make the action seem fast paced. The detail is there to an extent, and the drama point system is a nice way to replicate the show's effects.

If I can make a comparison. I used to play and run Morrow Project all the time. I worked for the company and it was mostly an after the holocaust game. It had very simple mechanics, yet encouraged some of the best roleplaying and actual thinking about what you were doing. At the time it blew AD&D away overall. But it was a simple system. I think the Buffy game will be similar. You can really get into a develop a character. You can be cinematic and still have fun and interesting combats. And yet you will not be constantly looking up rules or rolling buckets of dice to get stuff done. It is a game where plot, story and character interaction ie roleplaying will dominate, not roll playing.

As for being out, it was not on our distributor's list for Friday and Alex told our manager at Gen Con on Friday that most should get it Monday. Maybe a few got it early. In any case if it isn't around right now, it soon will be. And the book is gorgeous and has lots of great info and pics in it. I would actually recommend it to any fan of the show that just wanted background or source material.
