I'm anxiously awaiting its release. I thought I read that they were going to be trying hard to catch the US up with the rest of the world now that BtVS has aired in syndication (which was the legal holdup). I expect S3 will come out for the holidays and S4 in the first half of 2003? I can't wait!

$59.99! I paid about £59.99, and I thought that was cheap!

Season 4 is out in early April over here - I'll be providing screencaps of the best W/T moments in stunning DVD quality, of course.

Found S2 Complete DVD even cheaper at PlayCentric.com. If you haven't pre-ordered by now.....

Pre-Order is US$39.09
Less Discount $ 2.50 use code: NLSAVE30 - Good through Midnight EST 25 March
Ship 3-class $ 2.99
Total $39.58

Don't think you can beat that price, your card is debited at the time of the order, however.

*edited to say: I bought my S1 DVD at Playcentic for only $26, had no problem whatsoever except that it was a bit slow in coming in comparison to some other online sales....

I just find it so bizarre,

That USA see's the new episodes before the UK.

Yet we in the UK are awaiting Season Four DVD.

I would have thought USA would lead on the DVD front.

See, in the US they have this practice of waiting until the season has been shown in syndication before releasing it to buy. I can't remember the reasons, but they seemed to make sense. It's still in syndication on Fox saturday afternoons(today they showed Phases).

S4 DVD (region 2) release details

Postby The Fool » Thu Apr 04, 2002 9:41 am

This is probably old news for most people, but it`s just a reminder that the Season 4 box set is just a month away.

One interesting point, however, is that if you look at the Extras list, you won`t find any kind of apology for `Beer Bad`

from dvdtimes.co.uk

Fox have offically announced Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 4, due for release on 13 May. As expected, the release will feature a widescreen 1.78:1 transfer (in Regions 2 and 4 as far as we know, unlike Angel Season 2) and a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. Many of the extras are already known about from BBFC submissions, but here is how the discs will shape up:

Disc 1

The Freshman

Living Conditions

The Harsh Light Of Day

Fear Itself

Extras: Script for "Fear Itself"

Disc 2

Beer Bad

Wild At Heart

The Initiative

Pangs

Extras: Commentary by Doug Petrie for "The Initiative"

Disc 3

Something Blue

Hush

Doomed

Extras: Commentary by Joss Whedon for "Hush", script for "Hush", featurette - "Hush", featurette - "The Sets of Sunnydale", featurette - "Buffy: Inside the Music", two Buffy trailers, cast bios

Disc 4

A New Man

The I In Team

Goodbye Iowa

This Year's Girl

Extras: Commentary by Doug Petrie for "This Year's Girl"

Disc 5

Who Are You

Superstar

Where The Wild Things Are

New Moon Rising

Extras: Commentary by Jane Espenson for "Superstar", script for "Who Are You"

Disc 6

The Yoko Factor

Primeval

Restless

Extras: Commentary by David Fury & James A. Contner for "Primeval", commentary by Joss Whedon for "Restless", script for "Restless", featurette - "Season 4 Overview", stills gallery

Overall, a pretty impressive-looking set of extras; six commentaries in total (including two by Joss Whedon, which were sadly lacking from the Season 3 set) and several featurettes, one or two of which have the potential to be interesting. Once again though there is no sign of an outtakes reel, despite one being rated by the BBFC (like with several other Buffy and Angel releases).

Packaging will again take the form of a book/bible, presumably with the same anti-scratch modifications seen on the Season 3 set. A shot of the packaging is available over at The R2 Project.

Retail price for this set will be £79.99, although if you look around on the internet you should be able to get it for at least £20 less than that. Readers with multi-region players may like to remember that the Region 4 set, with is likely to be identical to the UK release, may well be the cheapest option. This will be released in Australia on 5 June, a few weeks after the set arrives on UK shelves.

Press release: Season 4 DVDs (UK)

Courtesy of Yahoo! Groups BuffyUK:

Quote:
Buffy Season 4 DVD is released to buy on May 13th from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and is available for the first time on DVD and in widescreen, in one collector's edition boxset. With all 22 butt kicking episodes plus a fantastic line-up of special features.

As well as the compulsory electrifying Buffy action, this DVD boxset has more value added material than ever before. With not ONE, but THREE commentaries from the legendary Joss Whedon (six in total), 5 featurettes including 'The Sets of Sunnydale' and 'Buffy, Inside the Music', 4 Scripts, 2 Buffy Trailers, Cast Biographies, and much much more.

Following the huge success of Seasons 1-3, Season 4 will not disappoint. Joss Whedon creates and directs some of his best episodes yet, as seen with 'Who Are You?' and 'Restless' as well as the acclaimed episode 'Hush' and an accompanying featurette.

Season 1 DVDs

Postby TrueXena » Thu Apr 04, 2002 10:52 am

Ok I'll admit I started watching Buffy this season. (season 6)

I'm hooked, obsessed, crazed, however you wanna call it. And I've actually downloaded every single episode of the series (to include some of the DVDrip commentary ones), burned them to CD, labeled them all nice and pretty, and I can play them in my DVD player. :) (i've got a wonderful collection, just ask anyone who downloads the eps from me) :)

I'm not a person who wants someones sales or marketing to go down the tubes just cuz I can get something for free. I'm all for people to get what they can for whatever they can, to keep a good thing going. (and Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a good thing I want to continue)

So being the good husband that he is, my hubby went out and bought the Season 1 DVDs for me. (for our anniversary, he gets Start Trek stuff, I get Xena and/or Buffy. Its only fair)

I was so excited. I was disappointed a tad in the packaging. I hate having stuff that is paper or cardboard and not have it well protected. Even knowing my propensity of being anal about keeping stuff clean and neat when it comes to my collections. Still the packaging was a little bit of a let down for me.

So I pop in the first disk, immediately going to the extras. Why? Cuz that's what I do when I get a new DVD. More so because I've probably seen the movie/tv show more than once by that time and I wanna see something new.

I found very few items. :( Yet another let down. I went through them in minutes, and was craving more. "I WANT MORE!" So I pop in the second disk to do just that, find more. What do I find? Even LESS extras then there was on the first. :( Man this just isn't turning out like I'd hoped.

So being the hopeful person that I can sometimes be, I put the last disk in. Again, there wasn't much to be had in the way of extras. :(

Now as far as the extras that were provided for all 3 disks, I was thrilled to learn some of the finer points of how some of the scenes in the first season were shot, or lighted, and some other smaller tidbits of info that I'm sure is posted somewhere on the net (but I haven't gotten to that page just yet), and the interviews were good. But I still couldn't help but feel a little empty even after all of that.

I know, they put 4 episodes on each disk, which brings the running time to approx 172 minutes just for the episodes. (approx 43 min per ep) And that's all good and well. I'm sorry, but I still felt a little let down with the set overall.

I'm not saying I'll never watch them again. (that would just be silly) I'm seeing a lot of folks talk about Season 4 sets coming out in the UK and the such, hoping for out-takes or deleted scenes. I just don't think they are going to see those. For the most part, every interview I've seen the person has pretty much stated, that the cast and crew don't play around on set. (because of the cost and time of setting up a shot)

I'm all for getting any and all deleted scenes, flubbed lines, and whatnots placed in the extras section of the new Sets that come out. I just don't think I'll get my hopes up of getting much more in the way of extras than I did in the Season 1 set is all.

(remembering when I played the "American Pie 2" unrated DVD for 15 solid hours with all the extras it provided)

TrueXena: (how) did you convert your burned discs that you are able to play them in your regular DVD player? I got tons of episodes on cd rom, but as far as I know, they cannot be played in my regular DVD player, only through my pc. Or am I just ruining my eyes looking at the computer and could have watched them on the t.v. screen all along......? Now that would have been funny :o

Re: Season 1 DVDs

Postby TrueXena » Thu Apr 04, 2002 2:02 pm

concrete: I totally found out by accident really.

At the time I started to watch (collect) the eps I only had sources that had the .mpg versions. Which are larger in file size (and you can only fit one per cd), but can also be burned to VCD. Which will play in any newer model DVD set top player. (which I intended to get eventually) But at that time I only had the DVD-rom in my computer anyways. So I just burned them as raw .mpg files. (so I could use them to clip scenes from for my forthcoming Music Vids)

About 3 months later the Hubby went and got a cheapo set top DVD player and I grabbed up a bunch of stuff I had burned to see what it would play and what it wouldnt play.

Come to find out it will play VCD's, SVCD's, raw .mp3's, raw .mpg's, as well as store bought DVD's. I was a little disappointed it wouldnt do anything with raw .avi files, but those can be converted to .mpg's fairly easy.

So even though the box mentioned nothing of the player being able to play all this stuff, it DOES! ;)

I suggest you grab up what you've got burned and just start popping the disks into the player and seeing what happens. (it wont hurt it, it will just tell you that it cant read the disk if its a file it wont play)

Have fun :)

Grifter; the DVD set is the complete season,no matter where you live. I think you are confusing it with the video-box release, they are 2 separate boxes (first 1-11 then 12-22 a few months later). Personally, I can't wait for the DVD s4 release for obvious reasons..... :smokin

Ahhh bugger! I'm sorry that didn't work out for you. Did you also try a burned VCD? You might not be able to view a raw .mpg but maybe you might be able to burn them to VCD and view them that way on the tv. :) (anything is possible, if you're not sure how to do such a burn, drop me a line at truexena@columbus.rr.com and I'll give ya all the info I know)

Oh yeah, I totally enjoyed the commentaries and ALL the extras that were given with the Season 1 set. I was just disappointed in how little they gave us as far as extras in a 3 disk set is all.

I'm a little concerned here. Obviously as soon as the S4 DVD Box Set comes out I'm going to buy it. Much slo-mo playing of NMR and The Hush will follow soon after. But if the BBFC passed a gag reel and it isn't on it does this mean they're going to release it on some kind of special edition set later? I would really prefer not to pay for what is essentially the same thing twice.

If I could go back in time, I'd want to meet Snoopy!

I wish we were getting the season 4 DVD's! But I guess we should be thankful for getting the eps first. I was going to try to order them off ebay from the UK or something until I realized that they're different regions or whatever. I don't understand the reason behind that whole different region thing.

Re: DVD Pricing

Postby wiccagood » Fri Apr 05, 2002 5:07 am

Basically, the regioning is just to try to put a stop to international piracy (good luck). There's quite a few ways around the region thing, at least if you're watching the DVD on your 'puter. Little bits of software can remove the region or make your computer think it's from the correct region. Then you could buy el'cheapo DVD's from Australia and watch them over there! (grumbling: bloody Aussie dollar why's it so damn low... lucky bloody Americans, grrr, arrgh...) :)

But you can buy DVD players that are multi-regional, I believe. Mine isn't though.

And sometimes the DVD discs themselves are multi-regional. I think Sarah McLachlan's Mirrorball is one of them.
