Hey, hip. This is neat. Me giving you information for a change!!

I'm hoping to go. I'm in Atlanta, and I'm currently unemployed and hope to go at least ovenight Saturday, September 21. The Sidewalk linkwww.sidewalkfest.com/ refers to the Redmont, which is supposed to be 2 blocks from everything.(I used to live in Birmingham until last October when I moved to Atlanta).I think it's $72 for a single or double until some time later in August.

erik at Sidewalk told me that all the film folks will be staying at the Redmont, so you betcha I want to stay there come hell or high water.

I don't think the airport is too far from town, maybe 30 minutes but I'm not sure.

I just know I want to go and meet lots of the Kittens who will attend.Oh, yeah. And meet Miss Benson herself!!!

nO, THINGS ARE NOT EXPENSIVE IN aLABAMA

For anyone who's confused, Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is an independent film festival in Birmingham, Alabama. This year it runs Sept. 20-22. Chance will be showing. See Sidewalk's website for specific info about tickets and whatnot.



I live in Birmingham and will be happy to give y'all tips about where to stay, where to eat, how to get around, etc. I'm expecting that we'll all be getting together? Maybe Saturday night, the 21st?



Anyway, here's some general info:



The airport is near downtown (where the festival takes place). Off the top of my head, some hotels (some of these links are the hotel's own website, others are just the hotel's page on a general travel site, so you might want to google around for a better deal):



The Redmont



The Tutwiler (This one will cost a pretty penny.)



The Sheraton



There are a few more hotels a little further away, but still in the general downtown area. The following two are right on the bus line that goes downtown, so getting downtown from there is no problem.



The Radisson



The Pickwick



Birmingham does not have great mass transit, but it's fairly easy to get around the downtown area using the bus system. It's also easy to get from there to Five Points South, which is where you'll find the best bars and restaurants. There are dozens of bars and 20 or so restaurants (Italian, Thai, Japanese, vegetarian, etc.). That's off the top of my head.



Renting a car isn't necessary unless you want to venture from the downtown/5 Pts. S area. Most of the hotels you'll probably stay in run shuttles from the airport. Cab fare from the airport to downtown isn't a whole lot.

The Alabama Theatre is a beautiful old theatre. I've been there many times and it's worth seeing, just on its own.



I'm trying to think of everything.



Here's a link to our weather for anyone who's coming from afar. Mid-late September is pretty mild here. Typically, highs in the lower 80's, lows in the lower 60's. It's fickle, though. You'd probably do well to bring shorts AND a sweater.
