I actually don't know this show (I'm ancient)--I thought this was just a line of toys.
I got a kick out of one thing I noted above: "Canterlot" Marvelous pun.
The series has been around since the 80's, but no one will fault you for not knowing. Up until recently, the show had existed to merely sell more toys, with convoluted plots and flat characters, though it holds a place in the hearts of many a young woman. The newest incarnation, FiM(4th generation) separates from it's predecessors by leaps and bounds. The main show-runner is Lauren Faust, known for other works such as PowerPuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Foster's home for Imaginary Friends, and Dextor's Lab. It takes an episode or so to really hit it's stride, but I think you'll love it. The people who work on this show have a good relationship with it's fans and you'll see many fandom things suddenly become canon and other such shoutouts. Is it any wonder it's taken the internet by storm?
Also it's very gay gay gay.Loads more, too. Mane-hatten, Filly-delphia, Los Neigh-gas, etc.
